The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since, less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or 16:8, ^combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^ -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • Check with your Doctor : if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.

So sorry about your FIL, MrsF.
Miserable time for you and a lot of extra work on your own.
Flowers
I hope your Haribou / Ipod strategy works for the play date today. Or pull the emergency cork Wine

Well done on the SV, Betsy.
Flowers
Very interesting that you've starting losing again after 7 months maintenance.
It fits in with science articles reporting that metabolism can take many months or years to adjust after losing more than a stone.

It shows again the importance of patience on any WOE.
People may find that their weight plateaus at some stage(s) and they can only lose weight again when their body is ready.

Another week, another plateau! Anything I can do to get it moving again or do I just have to wait it out?

BetsyBell · 12/04/2014 09:25

bigchoc It is interesting, and makes perfect sense. I've never been as healthily slim as I am now - was similarly tiny in my early 20s but no where near as strong and fit, and I was not eating as well as I am now by any means. If only my skin were more like a 20 year-old's rather than bearing the scars of giant babies! But I'll take strong and fit over smooth but unhealthy any day.

Fab costume tiggermummy!

Evilherbivore I may not the person to ask... Wink. But just be as healthy as you can be in your approach to diet and exercise and you'll be doing yourself a lot of good regardless of whether the pounds are shifting or not. And of course keep up fasting twice a week! Better to maintain and get healthy than to give up and put the weight back on.

Clever costume skills tigermummy, love her hair too, does she get that from you?

eats Fage do a lovely Greek yog, a full fat version for all you lucky maintainers and a 0% fat for us loser wannabees. All sugar/sweetener free. I used to love perle de lait, last time I had it thought it was thin and watery, also noticed it contained glucosefructose syrup which is creeping into a lot of things and is considered evil.

betsy very interesting plateau news, although I must admit I thought you were maintaining. How long did it take you to lose from start to finish again? know you've mentioned it before but its like info overload on here sometimes. Don't feel all me me me, it is helpful. I used to be peplum, incase you missed that nc.

Evilherbivore, I remember reading somewhere that a plateau is no weight loss for 8 weeks. Just keeping up your 5:2 or whatever your IF of choice is, and inches come off even if the scales insist you've not lost. Patience, we need this to lose weight. But 5:2 shouldn't feel too restrictive or you want to pack it in.

somewherebecomingrain how have you lost the plot? Can't stick to FDs or nfds? Running up hills with prams must do something.

MrsFlorrick · 12/04/2014 10:39

Bigchoc. Thanks. Wine is in fridge for later. Wink

I arranged a play date for DD with two of her class mates today. There are only 3 girls (10 DC in her class) so didn't want to just invite one girl.
Also one of the girls has a little sister who is at pre school with DS so she is coming too. Great so far.

One of the parents texted me this morning and essentially want to drop her off and disappear and pick up later. I was Shock. They are all 4 (2.5 for DS friend).
The children don't know me well, have never met DH and I barely know the parents. I would never ditch mine like that but perhaps I'm missing a trick?
I'm worried this little girl will be wailing as she has never been to our house before.

So very apprehensive. And got phone on stand by for the 999 call as one has dairy allergy, one nut allergy and one is allergic to raisins. Yikes. I have sensible fruit and crisps along with Haribo.

Wish me luck!Grin

Anyway just a bit Shock that parents would just dump her and go. Or am I the weirdo over protective type here?

Darkhorsefor1 · 12/04/2014 11:27

Hi to the very brave mrsf, that does quite relaxed parenting considering they've all these allergies. If its that bad don't they have epipens?

Darkhorsefor1 · 12/04/2014 11:32

On a 16:8 following FD and dh is eating a chorley cake and a pie from greggs. I'm chewing gum like cow chews cud. Grr.

Emmabryant123 · 12/04/2014 11:37

Morning all.
Have had nothing yet except water and a few sips of the worst cup of tea I have ever made- so have rest to oh he has taken a few sips and the rest has gone cold so must of been bad. Couldn't be bothered making another off out in a bit for lunch yum

BetsyBell · 12/04/2014 11:46

Darkhorse I did miss that name change! I have been considering myself as maintaining as I'm happy with my current weight and I stopped losing at the beginning of August.

To recap: Pre 5:2, At my heaviest I was at 13 stone 7 in September 2011, I started keeping a food diary, ate mindfully, took up exercise and lost weight steadily for a year, but plateaued at around 11 stone+ from September 2012.

I started this WOE in Jan 2013 at 11 stone 3, lost 16lbs fairly steadily over the next 4 months, hovered around 10 stone until July, then got down to the high 9s to low 10s in August, where I've been ever since. So, in the last few weeks, nearly 8 months later, I've broken through the 9.10 barrier, bouncing around 9.8 currently.

5:2 really kickstarted the weight loss again after a 4 month plateau after losing 2 and half stone. 11 stone+ was also a normal 'set point' for me - my normal weight I'd been for much of pre-baby adult years.

I'm excited by the idea of seeing 9 stone 7 on the scales for the arbitrary reason that it will be exactly 4 stone lost overall. A feat that seemed simply impossible 3 years ago.

BetsyBell · 12/04/2014 11:58

Good luck mrsF. I'm surprised at parent leaving young allergic child in an unknown house - probably not a pfb...!

BigChocFrenzy · 12/04/2014 12:32

MrsF The DC may be Free Range, so hopefully used to being in new places without fuss.
Or the parents are desperate for a break.

OP posts:
Raskova · 12/04/2014 12:47

Mrs F that does seem a bit, errrmmmmmm, well lax! I'd be nervous too mainly because of the allergies.

Possibly they were nervous about first play date awkwardness so ducked out??? I'm already nervous about when DD has play dates as I don't know anyone in the area.

Oh god, that's just made me think... When do I start applying for schools?

Apparently, there's a takeaway later Wink Monday will be my first gym session after fasting and I'm already looking forward to it. Should be going later when DDs DF gets back from his gym session.

Caught sight of my arse in the mirror again Friday morning and it's no better

Raskova · 12/04/2014 12:48

Oh, it's getlean. I kept forgetting my username and not noticing when people mentioned me in replies.

Last nc I promise Wink

WasWondering I posted earlier about this:

Scientists have established that after losing more than a stone on any diet, most people have a 10-15% lower TDEE than others who are naturally that adult weight.
This discrepancy usually disappears within about 1 year. but can remain up to 10 years.

Raskova · 12/04/2014 14:34

Oh big choc, that's pants Hmm

mummyof2girlsx · 12/04/2014 14:36

Happy Weekend everyone!

Busy saturday so far, DDs swimming lessons first thing this morning, followed by baking and then off to the garden centre soon where they are having an easter egg hunt which my girls will love Smile

DH has been working away for nearly 4 weeks now and still another 3 weeks before he will be home, feeling a bit fed up today so trying to keep busy.

Enjoy your Saturdays Grin

Eatriskier · 12/04/2014 16:09

dark I'm completely in love with Tesco finest's greek yoghurt. Sometimes I find the finest type ranges much of a muchness but the greek yoghurt is well worth the extra 50p over the normal one.

Does any body else have things that just send them hunger mental? That perle de lait sent me into hunger overdrive yesterday, and I woke today starving which is unlike me then I've been chasing hunger all day despite having eaten well. I'm ignoring it as I know I've had plenty, but its just irritating. Last thing that did this to me was a couple of accidental full sugar mountain dews - and that lasted a week.

Note to everyone, check the ingredients labels even on basic items. Yogurt doesn't really need ingredients other than live cultures and milk. The fact that perle de lait has an ingredients list almost as long as my arm should have been a giveaway. I stupidly only looked at the calories and though oh, must be full fat.

ErrolTheDragon · 12/04/2014 17:20

Eat - my MIL who I was talking about earlier was still reading yogurt labels at the age of 90! Her favourite is now mine, the Onken set - which is full fat and quite thick but not strained. I don't know if this applies to all brands but when I looked at calcium levels, greek yog seemed significantly lower - presumably some of the calcium ends up in the discarded liquid. Also the one time I tried making home-made with Total greek as a starter it didn't work, which suggested it wasn't very lively.

ErrolTheDragon · 12/04/2014 17:27

Anyway... I got the whole back garden weeded today (the weeds are springing up and some starting to flower early). I found it a lot easier than I did last year - I was starting to get some sort of hip problem if I sat down on the ground for long, and finding getting up a bit of an effort... no problems today, some combo of this WOE and all the JM squats and lunges has really made a difference. Smile

Darkhorsefor1 · 12/04/2014 18:22

raskova you've had more name changes than p.diddy! He's apparently gone back to puff daddy via Sean jean(nice perfume) and Sean c. What's this one about?

I should have chosen fastzilla on account of my rage factor on FD mornings. Too much gold blend not enough toast.

Thanks for that betsy (again), I like the fact that all in, it took a while. Not so keen on this no wine side effect of 5:2. I'm not drinking tonight because FD tomorrow and they just don't mix. Sigh, remember when Saturday nights were the highlight of the week, now its just a pile of ironing and dyeing the grey out my hair. Enjoy your take away before 5:2 steals that pleasure.

errol great nsv. Bet you won't ache so much later as last year. Lovely spring so far.

Darkhorsefor1 · 12/04/2014 18:25

Oh sorry betsy, its rascova having the take away. Hair dye going straight to brain cells.

Raskova · 12/04/2014 18:31

Dammit. Maybe I should have done something diddy related!

I just didn't recognise my username and kept forgetting it etc. silly me...

This one is short and simple. She was a pilot in World War II and I heard a very exciting story about her years ago on radio 2/4. Marina Raskova

Oooh hair dye, what colour etc? I love that just dyed feeling but alas I can only use bleach at the hairdressers and it costs that much I constantly have roots Hmm
