The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since, less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or 16:8, ^combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^ -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • Check with your Doctor : if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.

Well the good news is that DH isn't so concerned about the household bills that he minds us paying the extra, which tbh is the only real reason I tried to go back to normal milk (that and I mistakenly believed it to be far higher in calcium, which I've since discovered isn't true). I can't believe this was normal to me, its really quite horrible. So nice to have had a year mainly off IBS! If I'd not started this WOE I wouldn't have discovered I have food triggers as well as stress ones.

EvilHerbivore · 09/04/2014 19:23

I think I'll come in at about 600, not brilliant but Im not giving myself too hard of a time over it either, these tablets are making me so nauseous that I think thats just going to have to be ok for today!
Dinner out with friends tomorrow and a pre-planned nice dinner with DP on Friday means the next fast will have to be Saturday, meaning I'll only get two done this week and next week will essentially be ADF with that Saturday fast and then my usual Mon/Wed/Fri FDs...
How's other people getting on today?

Oh, and its Badger on a shorter name change!

Helliecopter · 09/04/2014 19:45

Arh thanks Southeastdweller and BCF - true, I have learnt a lot and it could have been worse. Not very good at being kind to myself in many ways. Something else I need to learn! Food guilt is hard to overcome.

LOL @ Badger great name change

Pleased with my FD today. Closing the kitchen with about 100 cals to spare, amazingly. I didn't eat until dinner time, not a bite. Not through mindful determination but general circumstances. Usually I get to lunchtime and am very ready to eat but today, I could even have not had dinner. Weird. But having plenty of cals for a pepper stuffed with beef chilli and a spoonful of rice, followed by jelly and a square of 85% dark chocolate was very rewarding!!!

Might risk a sneaky WI in the morning to see if I've undone the weekend damage (not that I know what the damage was, as I haven't stepped on the scales at all since last week).

DubBgoodToMe · 09/04/2014 19:59

I was doing brilliantly today but then I got the rage at XP.

I normally do an extra two hours work on a tues. I moved that to tonight because last night, he wanted to cut the grass in the garden. When he got home he decided it was too wet.

Today he discovered someone has keyed the word Chelsea in his car bonnet last night. He went to halfords to buy some polish and scrubbed it off. He gets home an hour after I should have been at work. I was going to take DD with me. Set off and saw him coming down the street. Left her with him but she screamed when I drove off so I decided to get her in the house, put Thumbelina on and leave them to it. He decides to go for a bloody poo and get changed. No rush in him so in that time I ate two slices of bread, loads if chicken slices, 2 chocolate cakes and I forget what else.

I then left... In a massive huff! Hmm

womblesofwestminster · 09/04/2014 20:18

Out of interest, who diagnosed you as bulimic? Just that there are some health professionals and dieticians who are vehemently opposed to fasting and are not open to the mounting pile of evidence.

I concur!

Sendintheshiraz · 09/04/2014 20:52

Balls...did not get the job. Looking forward to my Friday night Wine mahoovisvely. Hey ho.

On the plus side, kitchen closed and I'm stuffed from the veg curry. If I can do a FD today then I can get through any other, that'll be my mantra!! Clearly would have comfort eaten before starting this...

womblesofwestminster · 09/04/2014 20:53

Sendintheshiraz well done on not comfort eating. I'm a slave to those very same impulses after a bad day Thanks Chin up

Breadandwine · 09/04/2014 21:02

Evening all! If you look up into the SW sky now, you should see the ISS going across from left to right, under the moon. Should see it for about 5 minutes before it goes into darkness.

DubBgoodToMe · 09/04/2014 21:32

I don't think fasting counts as bulimia tho? Surely bulimia is forcing yourself to vomit, usually after binging. I'd have thought it'd be hard to be wrongly diagnosed of this?

I concur tho, if I hear 'you shouldn't starve yourself' 'you'll make yourself I'll' again I'll grab them by the throat.

You have to feel hungry to lose weight or eat less. How else would you lose weight?!

There's a diabetic woman at my work. She's huge. Her knee is giving out because of the weight. She refuses to see a doctor. She eats loads and loads and loads. She drinks pop, tho it's dr pepper zero or coke zero.

She simply has no idea. She tells me off for dieting all the time but I know if I carried on, if be her in ten years.

She's a lovely person, just very fat and all caused by herself but she blames everything else Hmm

TalkinPeace · 09/04/2014 21:43

dubbegood
my fave is - "but you are slim, you do not need to fast"
to which the reply is "no, you silly moo, I'm slim BECAUSE I fast"

your diabetic colleague
www.diabetes.org.uk/Guide-to-diabetes/What-is-diabetes/What-is-Type-2-Diabetes/

and remind her about Type 3 diabetes = Alzheimers
www.diabetes.org.uk/About_us/News_Landing_Page/2007/December/Alzheimers-disease-linked-to-diabetes/

GetThinOrDieTrying · 09/04/2014 21:56

Yeah I know that one!

I'm not slim, my frame kinda is but I've got a lot of fat. Too much fat!

I'll have a look at the diabetes. She's been forced to go on a course that shows her what she should be eating. BY HER DOCTOR!

It's dub btw. I've NC'd again. Getting my inspiration from get rich or die trying. It's not literal. I'm hoping everytime I see my name I'll be reminded how dedicated I need to be. Grin

TalkinPeace · 09/04/2014 22:08

Do not aim for thin .....
thin is controlled by skeleton shape
aim for lean
everyone - even those whose muscle connectios make them round - can be lean

however
fasting a a really cool way to get to and stay at a healthy weight for ever

BigChocFrenzy · 09/04/2014 22:14

Sorry to hear you didn't get the job, Shiraz, but never mind, maybe next time. Very well done not to comfort eat. Fantastic to achieve the FD

Well done to you too, Hellie

Absolutely TP. I aspire to be lean.

Successful FD today, feels like ages since my last one, seemed to have settled into a weds / fri FD pattern ATM.

Has gone OK, liquids only until dinner of cauli rice and veg + kidney bean chilli. Picked up some 10cal jellies with high hopes of a sweet treat but found the artificial sweetener aftertaste a bit unpleasant, managed to polish it off though and feel completely stuffed now.
Once again unsure of cals, but think that food must be under 500.

Also managed to do some exercise this evening before dinner (1st time Ive done that on a FD) and it was surprisingly OK.
Keep meaning to ask if Jillian Michaels' various 30 min circuit ones count as HIIT?

Next FD friday, before a rare child free weekend away with DP when I intend to eat and drink some delicious food and wine.

ErrolTheDragon · 09/04/2014 22:37

Lakefly, I do the shred/ripped each weekday (except today because we walked) whether it's FD or not -always in the morning before eating so the day after an FD very fasted - absolutely fine.

Whether JM is strictly HIIT I think depends how you do it. I'm going for it (cardio and most of the strength intervals) to the max and then pausing to recover and seems to me that a lot of HIIT programs are doing the same sort of moves (esp with the Ri30). If I was pacing myself to get through the whole thing without pause then maybe it wouldn't be HIIT (though that would be more intense than the 40mins on an exercise bike type of moderate exercise it would be less contrasty)

BigChocFrenzy · 09/04/2014 22:40

Bulimia is quite specific, nothing to do with fasting.
Also, neither bingeing or being unhappy about weight count in themselves as EDs.

People with EDs:

  • Have an abnormal or unrealistic fear of food, calories, being fat, gaining weight
  • and tend to use eating to cope with emotional distress.

Those with bulimia nervosa have ALL of these characteristics:

  • are driven by fear (see above) to usually restrict food intake
  • and have periods of excessive eating and loss of control (bingeing), after which they make themselves sick or use laxatives (purging)
  • and usually feel guilty and ashamed of their behaviour,
  • so usually do all this in secret
OP posts:
BigChocFrenzy · 09/04/2014 22:46

With HIIT, the High bit is essential. Otherwise it is just a tough workout, also good, just not classified as HIIT.
You can reduce duration if necessary to achieve high intensity. So, split a routine and do the various bits on different days.

GetLeanOrDieTrying · 10/04/2014 05:56

How's that? Not sure it has quite the same ring to it! Wink

Now that I'm a gym bunny, do you think that protein shakes would be worthwhile? I'm thinking of replacing my ever loved but useless cereal in the mornings.

XP has two a day so I could just steal his but I'm not sure it'd be worth it. It's chocolate chip cookie dough flavour!!! Yummy Grin

GetLeanOrDieTrying · 10/04/2014 06:10

My 'urban' friends might think I'm on about getting stoned tho. That's what they call it around here... Lean blood. Safe!

Peplum41 · 10/04/2014 06:21

How about Get lean or try dieing?

Seeing as its national name change week I shall be returning shortly as darkhorse. Nothing to do with fasting, I just like the song.

Welcome back to monster and postman, I assumed you were off on maintenance. Sorry to hear about your dd.

My word, bunt can't believe you've had the baby already.

Right last post as peplum41, need to get serious about getting lean, focus has shifted of late.

Darkhorsefor1 · 10/04/2014 06:48

Ooh that's better, been meaning to do that for ages. Darkhorse was taken so stuck my number on the end.

No more messing about, got to get out of these size 16 jeans, they're like clown pants everywhere except my waist, which is the chub zone. I tried on some 14s, which fit, but I look really small up until my middle and it just makes me look wierd and top heavy. I didn't mind squeezing into too small clothes when I was putting the weight on, but I'm far pickier now I'm finally losing.

Helliecopter · 10/04/2014 07:06

I'm really thick around the middle too - one of the reasons I wanted to give fasting a try was the visceral fat thing. I know I've got two young kids and that's part of it, but I honestly still look pregnant and it's embarrassing! I can get 12/14s up my legs but nowhere near fastening.

SV this morning. Hit my first stone marker! 14lbs gone. Hurrah! Now, if I can just manage not to trough everything in the house today....

BigChocFrenzy · 10/04/2014 07:06

GetLean Protein shakes have 90-160 calories made with water only. Made with milk they can really add up.
Also, the kind with 30g+ carbs are more suitable for male bodybuilders who want to bulk.

I have a very high TDEE, so I sometimes use a post-training LOW carb 150-cal RTD shake after a very high intensity workout, when I can't last until I shower and get home.

For your breakfast, better to just have a small tin of tuna (packed in water, 55 cals per tin) with a squirt of lemon, nothing else. That provides protein and you will feel fuller.

OP posts:
BigChocFrenzy · 10/04/2014 07:09

That's a great SV, Hellie ! Your waist must have reduced a bit too.
