The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.
The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.
By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.
You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.
WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.
NFD = Non fast day
NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory
Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.
This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.
This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.
This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.
A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")
Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)
A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Betsy I've also noticed this month that I now only eat food I enjoy and that the urge for junk frenzies has mostly gone. I'm very fussy particular at mealtimes.
Smile
I still enjoy sweet treats, but only really good quality ones and in reasonable amounts.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 20/01/2014 20:45

I got passed the wanting to eat phase.Yay!

Just watching Corrie and wishing my son would bog off being so loud.

BigChocFrenzy · 20/01/2014 20:47

FDs are horrendous when sleep-deprived or sniffly etc.
Occasionally, I wake up tired or off-par for some reason, so I postpone / cancel the FD. This is a long-term WOL for me, not a punishment sentence.

BigChocFrenzy · 20/01/2014 20:48

You too, Toffs, great ! ^^

No one would convict me...

DH just sat down with a mouthful of peanuts!

He said it is my fault as he was eating in the kitchen and I called him in.

BetsyBell · 20/01/2014 21:05

bigchoc That is such an amazing NSV :) Your frenzies were stuff of legend but I'm delighted that they are now in the past.

"Green&BlacksInReasonableQuantity" doesn't have quite the same ring to it as "BigChocFrenzy" though...

Coveredinweetabix · 20/01/2014 21:18

Just popping in to say a fairly successful FD. The DC and I went to friends for lunch and she served pasta bake and trifle for lunch. I had smallish portions of both and that was all I've had all day other than two slices of apple. I was very proud of myself for putting the DC's leftover beans & toast in the bin after tea rather than in my mouth. Did Zumba tonight but only really did 3/4 of it as I felt really light headed for the last 15 mins.

PavlovsCats · 20/01/2014 21:24

Found a really nice ready meal in Sainsburys today, was sausages, gravy and sweet potato mash, a range called Kirstys I think and it was only 260 calories! Not on the website though so will have to go instore to get some more and look at the rest of the range...

turkeybaby · 20/01/2014 21:47

Only now been able to get on here been so busy all day. Well done to all the fasters sounds like some successful days were had. Managed to stick to mine fine - this was only FD 3 but getting in the swing of it.

welcome those of you who started today too

WhenSheWasBadSheWasExhausted · 20/01/2014 22:01

Thanks dottiest you are right no point making myself more miserable than I already am.

I'm going to rebrand my overeating as a feast day, it will stimulate my metabolism.

BsshBossh · 20/01/2014 22:20

FD complete. 22 hours LOF then around 500 cals. BigChoc hurrah for reduced frenzies :)

Not2bObvious · 20/01/2014 22:32

Checking in after a relatively successful FD (a smidge over 600 and a 30 minute brisk walk)
Good to have 1 in the bag, I'd like to aim for a light'ish day tomorrow as I have a work night out Wednesday that could include food outside my control....and wine Wink
Well done fellow FD'ers! Night now

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 20/01/2014 22:45

At dinner time, I was sitting on an accidental mini-fast. Then the claddkaka came out of the oven. Then the claddkaka needed to be checked. Then the first slice of claddkaka was lonely in my stomach.
Good things: I stopped there & I am only slightly over my daily target which is actually my goal-weight tdee & I really enjoyed both pieces - it wasn't mindless eating.
Plan: give away the rest of the cake tomorrow achieving many good things as a consequence.

ErrolTheDragon · 20/01/2014 22:52

I just had to google claddkakka .... 'Swedish chocolate mud/goo cake'. Good thing I've nothing like that in the house! Will go to bed now with some tea and hope to dream of it. Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 20/01/2014 23:10

Betsy I've not totally abandoned the dark side - I'll just visit their posh section occasionally, instead of staying the weekend !
Smile
Still, only a few times per year, in a really good restaurant and not totally stripping the pudding trolley.
1200 quality dessert calories are no longer true "junk frenzies" .

OP posts:
BigChocFrenzy · 20/01/2014 23:16

"cladkakka" ? Phew, Errol, Helles, I was worried there, since "kakka" is German slang for poop.
Similar colour, but presumably different recipe.
Smile

OP posts:
hopefulgum · 20/01/2014 23:17

Mmmm, claddkaka sounds so yummy!

Trying a FD again today (as yesterday's didn't continue due to a dinner invite), but not sure if I'll make it because I didn't go to sleep til 1 am and was woken at 5am by DS who'd wet the bed...Sad

So I'm now sat here at 7 am feeling so tired, with a runny nose and headache too. I really want to do a fast day, I am enjoying the results and want to see/feel results at the end of the week, but I suppose if I can't handle it due to tiredness I will not be hard on myself. This is a flexible WOE and I need to remember that.

So far I feel fine - not hungry- but who knows how long that will last. I plan to sleep sometime today.

I don't think the three glasses of wine I had last night is helping my sore head much. I guess lots of water is the order for the day.

I am pleased that I wasn't a pig ate mindfully last night. I barely touched the cheese platter, didn't go overboard on the fish, enjoyed a really delicious crab custard thing, but only had a tiny piece of chicken for the main course and didn't finish dessert. It's a NSV for me as I used to finish everything and go back for more even when I was full.

I am going to make a nice healing, low cal soup for lunch. I think I can hang out until then...

BigChocFrenzy · 20/01/2014 23:31

Hopeful Try your FD when you feel well and rested, not like something the DC's cat dragged in.

OP posts:
headintheclouds · 20/01/2014 23:37

Fast day completed for me.. LOF 22 hrs then 500 cals for dinner....
The end of this week will be my anniversary on this WOE & I intend to put up a review on the thread like some others have done.. I'll just get my 2nd FD over on Thursday
Hope all fasters have had a good one .

BigChocFrenzy · 20/01/2014 23:46

btw, Betsy, I was very pleased that I can retrain my palate to some extent. I really like the 90% cocoa Lindt now and normally find 25g satisfying, whereas initially it was yuk.
90% choc is actually a pretty healthy treat, so that's progress.

OP posts:
vvviola · 21/01/2014 00:07

For goodness sake! Another failed FD, due to DH working from home today and wanting to take DD1 and me out for lunch (we rarely get to go out without the crazed whirlwind that is DD2, so it was a rare treat)

Next available FD is Thursday.

I'm really not doing well at this. Maybe when DD1 goes back to school in 2 weeks things might settle down a bit.

hopefulgum · 21/01/2014 04:25

Good advice, Bigchoc, I just couldn't do it.Way too tired. I broke the fast at about 10. I've gone a bit crazy though and eaten all sorts of random things. I wasn't going to log it all into MFP, then decided I might as well, and though pretty crazy: 900 calories by 12:23pm...Shock

I will still try to stick to TDEE and tomorrow I will fast.

vvviola, not a fail, just a change of plans...

Jobyloo · 21/01/2014 07:12

Morning all, hopeful fingers crossed your feeling better and vvv really hope you have a good FD today.

I managed to get FD1 in the bag this week, 23 hrs then stew and G&B cocoa. Also went for a 5 mile walk which according to Runkeeper means that I was -45 cals yesterday for the whole day. Not sure if that's a good thing or not??? Confused.

Have a good day whether your fasting or not and try not to let this cold spell get you down.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 21/01/2014 08:02

Morning all

Posters are right. No such thing as a fail. Just a reschedule!

I woke up with the alarm which put me in a bad mood. Then I weighed myself by accident. After my less than 500 calories FD yesterday I had decided I was only weighing after my 2nd/3rd FD of the week as it does upset me if the scales are up but I forgot. I am down Smile. 11 stone 3.8lbs which is my second lowest since dc2 born in 2005 and my lowest since I started logging on Happy Scale. Very happy.

NSV to report too. I was putting some mini Cumberland sausages in the kids lunch box and would normally shove one in my mouth without thinking. Twice one missed the box and I would have seen that as a sign to eat it Hmm. I got DH to check the label to make sure they were ready to eat and when he told me 300 cals for 100g I told him I would not be eating one as it was too high for not enough enjoyment. Really proud of myself as I am choosing to not put processed rubbish in the mouth (though they sausages are Cumberland so would hope they aren't rubbish.)

DH got rid of another mouse so the cats are only having the garden and utility room while I am out. It makes me not like them when they bring mice in and I don't like having to deal with them. I get pathetically scared.

Eek, just seen the time. Happy FD, Feast Day, NED to everyone.

(NED - Normal Eating Day.)
