Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 35 - A new year’s resolution you’ll want to keep? Try 5:2 - it's not a diet, it's a lifestyle. Whether you want to shift fat, get healthy or discover some missing self control -

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Tips and Links : Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this article appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI. (Though anecdotal evidence from these long-running threads may suggest otherwise…)

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

Another drink would be a good idea at this point. This morning, after the obligatory mug of proper tea, instead of a herbal I tried just hot water - which weirdly in all my 53 years I don't believe I ever have before. I actually enjoyed it, and it does the job if you want something warm. So thank you whoever mentioned that!

Think I might go for a herbal now... twinings citrus crush perhaps, tastes rather like orange fruit gums... Smile

zedzedzed · 13/01/2014 16:08

Have you tried chai tea? Not the latte type, nice for a change I find. x

RavenousRunner · 13/01/2014 16:10

Errol and zzz - have you tried the Twinings Butter Mint? It's just mint tea with vanilla, but for some reason it tricks my brain into thinking I'm eating a lovely pudding.

BigChocFrenzy · 13/01/2014 16:12

Errol I sometimes have hot or cold water with a few drops of lemon juice (no sweetener, so about 1 cal)
It's sharp and just a bit more interesting than water.

curveballs · 13/01/2014 16:12

Also sailing through my third FD, though I am fit to burst with all the water

However my hardest temptation is yet to come - avoiding after dinner treats Hmm

ErrolTheDragon · 13/01/2014 16:13

Oh, I've not come across that - sounds good, I've got some whittards black tea with vanilla which I love at the moment (but prefer with milk so not too many on FD. May have one of those when I've come back from getting DD from the bus-stop. Smile I was actually wondering this morning whether hot water with a little bit of vanilla pod infused would be nice.

ErrolTheDragon · 13/01/2014 16:15

I do have hot water and lemon sometimes, but on FD I don't find I want anything too acidic. Whets rather than dulls the appetite IME.

zedzedzed · 13/01/2014 16:23

Oooohthanks ravenous may try that buttermint one!

This is my only bad FD time, just as I'm about to cook toddler tea...God even the baby's sweet potato mush looks good at this time of day! I just have to get to half 5 and I know I'll be fine and dandy again.Think I'll put on some toons and dance with the babes.

curve maybe you could join something on your FD evenings if that's your danger time, maybe if you were out from 7-9pm you wouldn't notice the snack attacks (probably tricky if you have LOs tho).

Tinkertaylor1 · 13/01/2014 16:25

zedzed - will be searching for that tomorrow! Any ideas on how many in the corriander and lemon ?

Starting to feel the pinch ,so just brewed up! This part of the day drags as I'm already clock watching till dd1 goes to bed at half six!

MrsFlorrick · 13/01/2014 16:26

Not fully caught up yet! ThanksThanks Everyone for your kind wishes for myself and DD. very sweet of you.

Bigchoc Grin on scale victory!! Well done!!

Lots of good losses.

And you Bssh!! Almost there. Grin

I'm still STILL at 158lbs. My stall
Is hanging on.

No sleep and no workout and being stuck with screaming DC doesn't help.

My FD went out the window. I ended up hoovering DC lunch left overs and had a big lunch myself.

Still should come in well under TDEE so FD postponed till tomorrow.

Off to train the guinea pigs in the ways of the ninja.....Wink

Bumblebeejumble · 13/01/2014 16:31

Hello everyone, I'm officially delurking. Wanted to say thanks, you guys have helped me get through my first few fasts... I've been doing 2/3 fasts a week for six weeks, and I've lost 7kg, even with Christmas! I even decided I'm no longer too jellybellied to get on my bike, am so happy. Still got 25kg to go Sad, but really feel like I'm onto something here. NFD so am looking forward to a chocolate digestive or three after dinner...

One question: has anyone tried stevia? I take sugar in my (absolutely essential) morning coffee, don't really like sweeteners, so wondered if anyone has any non-canderel recommendations?

BigChoc
Well done at the NSV and SV

I've lost 3 of the 4 I put on over Christmas

bumblebee
If you can, train yourself to drink unseweetened ....

Bumblebeejumble · 13/01/2014 16:44

Wishful thinking/typo - I have 35kg still to go not the 25 I put in my first post, so zedzed and nouvelle, I was in the same kind of situation as you were to start with....

zedzedzed · 13/01/2014 16:45

tink they're all between 170-200 cals per HALF packet.

zedzedzed · 13/01/2014 16:48

bee so that's about 15lbs over your first 6wks AND Christmas? Wow amazing progress, can I ask what you're doing on NFDs and how much exersize?

zedzedzed · 13/01/2014 16:49

*exercise

Bumblebeejumble · 13/01/2014 16:59

Hi zed I work 3 days per week, and it's a 40-min walk each way, and since the new year, I've gone out on 45-min bike rides twice a week. And the toddler has a fascination with the postlady at the mo, so we walk (toddler pace) the mile to the postbox most days too! Nfds im trying to stick to 2200, though my tdee would be 2400. Do you reckon that's ok? Should I be eating the full 2400? 2200 seems like enough, and I'm losing weight, so maybe it's ok. I'm 5'3 and currently gulp 97 kgs.
I do find that I have more energy, and my blood pressure's gone down to completely normal (was a bit high in October).

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 13/01/2014 17:00

Well done tiredemma.

So far my FD is going well. Only had the 2 small squares of Kendal mint cake but I only had them as I was tidying out the cupboard so that needs working on. I could have put them in a plastic box. I did not main line all the chocolate after mousegate though so claiming a NSV. Please?

Fish pie for tea but a small portion. Looking forward to eating tomorrow.

Will try not to be Sad if I have no loss when I weigh tomorrow.

MrsF - lots of stuck weeks for me too.

BetsyBell · 13/01/2014 17:04

Bigchoc Flowers, you may have to change your name if you're going to carry on with that sort of healthy-choice-making malarky! Well-blooming-done that woman :)

zedzedzed · 13/01/2014 17:11

Yeah bumble my TDEE is about that and on the advice of some of these lovely thread folk and on my own instinct I decided to eat 10% under that to save up for mistakes, weekend treats etc, all within reason of course, I'm not binging.

Strangely my problem has been meeting my TDEE on NFDs as I'm not as hungry and so delighted to be 'allowed' to eat normal food in a normal way while (hopefully) losing weight that I'm gratefully gobbling up the healthier type of meals I should always have been eating and they have fewer cals! Very odd indeed.

Relieved to hear you've been losing while doing something very similar and not depriving yourself too much on NFDs...although I'm not doing any cycling yet...just walking and mental toddler and newly crawling baby-guarding-related rushing about!

ErrolTheDragon · 13/01/2014 17:17

I did not main line all the chocolate after mousegate though so claiming a NSV

Quite right too! Grin

Does anyone else think we need some sort of 'well done' or 'award' emoticon? Flowers don't quite fit, Brew isn't enough and we really don't want Biscuit, Wine, Cake or even Bear on FDs Grin ... I'm thinking a gold star or cup, summat like that.

curveballs · 13/01/2014 17:20

Thanks for idea zedzedzed, I am going to start going to my gym class again on FDs, but I want to get used to the calorie restriction for the first couple of weeks. Until then - is it bad to go to bed at seven at the same time as my ds lol?

ELR · 13/01/2014 17:22

Evening just caught up on the thread.
Wow bigchoc well done.
mrsf hope dd is better soon.
betsy and zzz thanks for the clench reminder!!
toffee hope you are feeling a bit better today.
All the talk of cats bringing stuff in has made me think of ours, one day last week one of our cats was meowing its head off to show us the gift it had brought. Me and DH couldn't work out what it was but after about 5 mins we realised it was a sausage (cooked) anyway thought it was a little bazaar but he brought us another one last night! Goodness knows where they are coming from!
I'm starving!!! Going to go and cook my fast day dinner peppered steak and spinach, yum yum.

Maeve789 · 13/01/2014 17:25

it's my second fast day and I didn't get a headache today so i'm delighted. somebody told me the headaches are carb withdrawal, so i had 2 ryvita for breakfast and that seems to have worked.
i had been trying to avoid carbs, but this worked for me.

just a tip for anybody that suffers from headaches doing the fasts.
