Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Advice please. Whdn do you have your 'real' weigh in. I confess to getting on the scales dvery morning but I only want it to count once a week. So before ot after a FD? Ps lost 3lbs after FD yesterday.

Talkinpeace · 27/09/2013 16:38

precious
On a Friday morning, after my swim before yoga. No other times count.

Coveredinweetabix
Hmmm, you need to get into the mindset.
There is no "lunchtime" - there are no "mealtimes"
and if you can possibly avoid going to the Supermarket till the morning, then having a BIG veg stir fry or equivalent for supper will help.
TBH I never fast on a Friday as that is a Wine day.
Were you having plenty of hot drinks duringthe day - tea, coffee, miso, herbal tea? Just that they are far better for sating short term hunger than a snack.

MissStrawberry · 27/09/2013 16:58

I have failed too as I have had 3 home made muffins so I should have just had the toast I thought would be nice this morning But I have done 2 this week so I hope the scales were wrong this morning and tomorrow I will weigh less than last week. Feel less crap about myself than I would pre 5:2 though so taking that as a positive.

eatriskier · 27/09/2013 17:11

precious Friday morning, after the loo, in the nude (unless I Friday fast in which case its Saturday but same routine)

Coveredinweetabix · 27/09/2013 17:13

Talkin - I know! I'm usually OK and can go through to about 4pm on a FD but today it was just impossible. In general, I have got much better at eating when hungry when doing this rather than thinking "oh, it is the time dictated by society to eat. I must eat, even though I'm still full from my previous meal". Since I've started this, I've usually had a FD on a Friday as I'm in the office so its one of my busier days and I'm not surrounded by food or the DC's leftovers. As for the supermarket tonight, it should be OK as I'll be able to buy some yummy food to eat tomorrow.
Just off to make another hot drink & fill up my water bottle again.

Salbertina · 27/09/2013 17:23

Ok, failed yesterday but as its the weekend and i want wine & munchies i decided to try my first liquid fast and break it this evening- will have done 23 hrs making it to 7pm. Gone ok And nearly there Smile

Preciousdaisybear · 27/09/2013 17:41

Whooee that's the walk over. Walking on sand is exhausting and those pesky teenagers go at a fair lick. FD yesterday went fine. I thought I would be ravenous this morning but couldn't even manage all my breakfast. Resting my achy bones...

lucyintheskywithdinos · 27/09/2013 18:05

Oh yuck. Broke my fast but was promptly sick. Twice.

whimsicalname · 27/09/2013 19:35

I weigh before shower on Monday morning.

Does walking 3 miles (pushing) a pushchair count as exercise? I would run it if I didn't have both kiddos but only have a single running stroller. Don't think the 3yo would keep up (although he put me thru my paces shredding yesterday!)

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 27/09/2013 19:48

lucy :( a bug do you think?

I don't know how people fast on a friday, friday is wine night in this house. DH has won a new contract so we've had champagne, lovely steak and a very nice bottle of red burgundy to wash it down with. I need to start buying larger amounts of steak though - DS1 who is 5 has just wolfed a huge amount, all rare and lovely Grin

Helles well done, and I know exactly what you mean about droopy rather than solid fat. I've got that going on atm.

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 27/09/2013 21:02

Yes Whim walking 3 miles counts as exercise - unless you usually walk 15 miles, in which case: no whim walking 3 miles does not count as exercise Wink

Excited just now as I have a new super steroid inhaler and am going to start shredding again tomorrow. I am not injured. I am not ill. I am starting from scratch - 30 days to go!

My next fast is sunday but I am looking forward to it, particularly as I was on a course today and the catered lunch was sandwiches Sad I'm taking my own food next time. I have hideous heartburn.

Coveredinweetabix · 27/09/2013 23:18

FD successfully completed here. If I hadn't had to drive this evening, I probably would have eaten nothing more after my banana but I was quite light headed before I got in the car so nipped into the little M&S at the station and got some (cooked) beef so had that which was another 100 cals.
I'd rather not fast on a Friday but I find it much easier to fast when I'm in the office than I do when I'm at home with the children.

eatriskier · 27/09/2013 23:23

mini fast complete along with a whole world of exercise. more mad amounts of walking tomorrow. off to bed in a mo to get some peace.

BsshBossh · 28/09/2013 08:33

NFD Friday was a bloat-fest. Made the mistake of having breakfast (thinking I could skip or have a light lunch) and working lunch ended up being pizza, garlic bread and wedges. Thought I could then skip/have a light dinner but DH texted on the way home that he fancied fish and chips. How could I resist? Wink We shared a portion but still... Anyway, I atoned with fruit for dessert (even though I didn't need dessert - it's just habit).

Woke up today feeling over-full. We're going to friends for lunch today so I have skipped breakfast and will eat lightly at lunch.

Just can't eat like I used to... I really suffer afterwards and it's just not worth it.

lucyintheskywithdinos · 28/09/2013 08:45

ali no idea! I feel fine again now.

I fast on the days I am busiest, usually Tuesday and Friday. Not sure what I'm going to do next week though as DP is off from Wednesday.

Helles I keep thinking about the shred, but I find Gillian a bit stressful. I'm a yoga person, although I'm planning on starting running again when I hit a plateau.

NFD here for me. Just weighed in, 2lb down. My BMI is now 28.5, I was 33 when I started.

Today I am spending many hours squatting and scrubbing. We need to get two rooms cleaned and painted this weekend (we're renovating our house).

MissStrawberry · 28/09/2013 09:13

I have been up since before 8 cooking as I couldn't sleep for worries and needed to keep busy so no time to think. Didn't work but I have made some gorgeous little tartlets with onion, garlic, mushrooms, tomatoes and feta cheese in. They are divine. I also made croissants for the kids and a little sultana pasty for DH with the left over pastry.

Gone up from 11 stone 7.4 to 11 stone 8lbs but blaming being on and not going to stress as I am sure I will be less next Saturday.

Kids going to in-laws so looking forward to a nice day just with DH though we do have unpleasant things we have to talk about (hence the not being able to sleep.) Will all soon be over though .

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 28/09/2013 09:29

I know what you mean Lucy I wouldn't be able to cope with her for more than 20mins but the shred really works. Yoga or pilates are my weekend treats :)

Last night I was fantasising about all sorts of food but it was only at bedtime when I was completing mfp that I realised I had only had 1150 calories. I certainly hadn't felt deprived apart from that little bed time hunger pang.

Another nfd today which will rack up the calories as there will be a few drinks and snacks with my cousin then fd tomorrow.

JB30 · 28/09/2013 09:40

Morning all! Yesterday's WI saw me down .6, over 2 weeks. Now 11.4, delighted with that. I was out last night and my estimate of the whole day was 2600 cals, and that was me being pretty good - I shudder to think what I was packing away before I got into this WOL.
I was thinking about doing a 16:8 but feel a tad too ropey, too muchWine last night. Had fruit for brekkie, fancied something fresh & light. Contemplating a gentle jog in a bit, if my head stops hopping. Kids are driving me batty, thank god for activities & play dates today.

southeastdweller · 28/09/2013 09:41

Morning. Feel like I'm back on track now after eating too much rubbish on Wednesday and Friday. Ate better yesterday and wasn't tempted to pick on any of my online food order when it arrived last night. I did though have a couple of small chocs yesterday in the William Curley chocolate shop near Victoria as and bought a few for my usual Sunday morning brunch. They're expensive but I felt like a treat. Planning a long gym session today and a mini-fast and looking forward to it.

Preciousdaisybear · 28/09/2013 10:51

Morning! Ate tons of rubbish yesterday (including DCs Smarties..Blush) and korma for tea. Feel positive this morning and going to be good - at least til our visitors arrive and the cakes come out... Have a good day everyone.

INeedThatForkOff · 28/09/2013 11:42

Just signing in to say hello again. I tried this WOE back in May and did well for a couple of weeks, but we have two very bad sleepers, so exhaustion, heavy workload and BFing meant it just wasn't the right time for me.

We're beginning to get a bit more sleep in our house now and I'm not having to BF so much now DS is eating well, so I think I'm ready to give it another try. It's a stressful time in that my DM has recently been diagnosed with cancer and is having a massive tumour removed on Tuesday, with chemo in January. We are also looking for somewhere to live and will be moving soon. However my current eating habits are appalling, I'm getting no exercise and I'm Blush and Sad about the way I look, so it needs to happen.

I'm trying very hard to focus on the health benefits rather than the weight loss and need to remind myself of those.

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 28/09/2013 11:45

So yesterday was a FD, but was ruined by DH realising we hadn't anything for the DCs to eat so would go out for tea (we live rurally and I was at work with the car till 6) so I decided to stick to 500 cals at work and only had 200. I just wasn't hungry. So I definately realised that eating causes hunger. Grin

Today though is couldn't care less day. I've lost 2lbs since Monday and will watch my food again from tomorrow with fast days Monday and Friday.

Well done to any losses and successful fasts. Will catch up properly tomorrow when im on the laptop, the phone is a PITA for MNing.

Emmabryant123 · 28/09/2013 12:46

Doing 16:8 today.
Not a done a proper fast for ages. Need some will power back.

Just had bowl of cheerioes and a banana.
Dinner is hm chicken rogan josh, with rice (jacket pot for me)
One small naan bread and one poppadom.
Not planning on eating anything else, not that hungry really.
Yesterday all day I ate a gammon and hard boiled egg sandwich and banana at 1pm. On lovely thick seeded brown bread
Tea at 5:30 ravioli with cheese on toast, a yoghurt after. Just don't eat like I used to, stepped on scales thus morning I weight just over 8 stone. However on another set I have I weight 8.7 god knows which one is right lmao..

Talkinpeace · 28/09/2013 13:15

Gosh, lots of people going through stress at the moment.
But please keep posting as unwinding at us is much better for you than unwinding at kids or other halves.
And
try to eat mindfully, even on non fasting days
as you will never regret not snacking
and many here have had dysfunctional relationships with food - breaking that cycle is a huge step.

MissStrawberry · 28/09/2013 13:27

Kids at in-laws for a sleep over so are quite safe! Grin.

Had a lovely baguette with roast beef and horse radish for lunch. Normal eating day today and tomorrow though lunch at MIL so might not eat much..
