The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Peckish? I feel like my stomach is eating itself from the inside. I've never been good at being hungry.

BsshBossh · 12/09/2013 16:18

Shrod how have your other FDs been? Is this just a particularly stressful day (or few days)?

SchrodingersFanny · 12/09/2013 16:22

The last few days have been very stressful with DH being away. Finding today stressful trying to keep kids quiet while he works. And I have a cold.

My first two fasts were fine, felt good etc. Today I just want to eat biscuits.

Does anyone have small snacks on FD, like celery or a low cal soup? Feel like I've failed for having soup.

BsshBossh · 12/09/2013 16:27

Schrod I can see now why fasting has been hard this week for you. Could you write this week off - just eat sensibly rather than fast; or else just have a few snacks to tide you over. In the grand scheme of weight loss, an extra cup a soup or a banana or breakinga fast matters not a jot.

eatriskier · 12/09/2013 16:39

Schrod sometimes when you're ill the body thanks you for a fast, other times it doesn't and often you wont know which way it will go! This woe works really well to tell you to listen to your body's proper signals. I only managed a mini fast on Monday, it wasn't going to happen near 500 calories. Today is going to be fine. Also if you just need to go slightly over, like bssh says, don't worry. You'll still be doing wonders being mega calorie reduced. Btw, soup isn't cheating in my book.

angelabbie · 12/09/2013 17:13

I have bought the new Jamie oliver save cook book and its all calorie counted with some fab fast day and nfd recipes. Have just had the sweet pot and chick pea curry with cauliflower rice and it was bloomin lovely. Also the chicken and sweetcorn chowder is also really tasty. Worth a look I think.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 12/09/2013 17:30

angel I saw that in the supermarket the other day and wondered about getting it.

Nearly dinner time

MissStrawberry · 12/09/2013 17:41

Eating a snack is fatal. Now I just want to eat and feeling old feelings of hating myself for wanting to eat.

Accidental breakfast due to DH. - toasted teacake.
1 milk bottle sweet.
1 ryvita and onion and garlic dip a few hours ago.
1 ryvita and onion and garlic dip and a bit with beetroot chutney minutes ago.

It is like once you eat you release the beast. Not helped my something tough to deal with and I want to cry and eat chocolate.

Abra1d · 12/09/2013 17:49

One thing I am struggling with, having done this for over a year now, is not eating a lot of carbs on a NFD. I have put back on five of the nine pounds I lost during the year. Some of that may be muscle from exericse, but not most of it.

I know I have to train myself not to bake cakes or make toast, etc, on NFDs. I can't eat 'whatever' I want on NFDs and still lose weight.

Dotty342kids · 12/09/2013 17:54

ooh angel that sounds good! Yummy.

Feeling really pleased with myself today. Woke up at 3.30 stressing about work things so am very tired but it's a fast day so weirdly I cope ok energy wise as my body doesn't have food in it to make it feel sleepy Grin.
However, was feeling quite stressed out earlier and nearly caved and had a veg samosa but have held out. Just eaten a couple of raspberries and despite the fact that I have to work again at 7.00 and therefore can't eat till after 8.00 I have done all the prep so there's no excuse not to cook it now!

Not one of my easier fast days but really pleased with myself for getting through it. I am going to be 10st 6 tomorrow, I am Grin

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 12/09/2013 17:57

Dotty well done.

Emmabryant123 · 12/09/2013 18:05

Not a bad day here. 594 calories here.
Not much in house (wasn't able to fast till the evening)
6:00am : two cups tea both with semi skimmed milk
10:50am: hard boiled egg
11:30: banana. No sugar jelly (10cals)
1:30 large mug of coffee with semi skimmed milk
Dinner: whole tin of baked beans. No sugar jelly (10cals)

Theirs a muller rice in the fridge mmm. I can have it tommorow, I can have it tommorow
The main thing I want from this woe is to change my ewting habits. From wanting to snack all the time and reducing my appetite.

Tommorow I have planned. Either taking a ginsters sausage roll or pasty to work. The having lasagne and salad for dinner. Yummy .

JB30 · 12/09/2013 18:40

MissS that doesn't sound too bad at all? 250-300 max.
Don't be so hard on yourself, this can't be good if you're going to beat yourself up over a couple of crackers.
If you can't handle it today, just eat something decent, regroup and do a different day. Or make it a mini fast, eat up to 700-800. Be nice to yourself Flowers

MissStrawberry · 12/09/2013 18:51

Enjoyed my jacket potato - nothing on it but couldn't eat more than 2-3 mouthfuls of salad as it tasted funny.

How do mini-fasts fit in? If I give in now and stuff my face I will feel like I went without for nothing and still have to do another fast tomorrow!

I found FD easy at first, struggling with them more now Confused.

Emmabryant123 · 12/09/2013 18:54

Does anyone have any advice on starvation mode. For example I ate 594 calories today and tommorow plan to eat around 10:30 and 6:00pm dinner. Will this not send my body into thinking no foods coming and make it hold onto the food I do give it. I eat around 1-700-1950 calories on NFD.

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 12/09/2013 18:55

Argh - weighed today and, over the past month, I've put on 2lbs Sad - how can that be? Lack of discipline on most fd's and 2 periods in one month during which I snarfed everything in sight - and then bought more because the food I had in was too healthy!

Right, back to basics. Fd tomorrow as I forgot I was fasting today. 500 calories, here I come!

Emmabryant123 · 12/09/2013 18:56

Miss strawberry. Just keep saying 'I can have it tommorow'
Distraction distraction you can do it!
Also try something high in protein for dinner on FD. Keeps you feeling full . My beans had 20g in.
Your potato will just turn to sugar , then you'll crash and crave more x

JB30 · 12/09/2013 19:09

My understanding of mini fasts was that you probably went up to half your tdee - I do it sometimes as an alternative to 4:3 which is just too hard for me. I get the benefit of another few hundred cals saved. In my head over time it all counts or it allows me wriggle room over the week. Or on other occasions if I just can't hack 500, instead of losing the plot entirely, I give myself that flexibility of around 800-900 cals.
For me personally, I don't want to beat myself up any more about food. There is flexibility there if you don't abuse it and you're honest to yourself about it.

BetsyBell · 12/09/2013 19:35

Emmabryant starvation mode is largely a myth or certainly is on the timescales you're talking about anyway!

Waiting to eat tomorrow is a good thing as your body will have a nice long period overnight with no new food coming in (and only a small amount to deal with today) so it can focus on repair work round your body rather than constant digestion.

Sounds like you've done well today :)

BetsyBell · 12/09/2013 19:38

HellesBelles When did you weigh in? If it wasn't the morning then I'm assuming you do realise it's completely normal to be heavier by a couple of pounds later in the day?

Also: it makes more sense to weigh in after a fast day as then you're less likely to be weighing the previous day's eating.

AngieM2 · 12/09/2013 19:44

FD here. 226 calories consumed. Might have a 70 cal serisl bar and cup of tea. dotty I'm also aiming for 10.6 tomorrow. That would be my holiday gain lost. Then need to lose further 7lb for trip to Venice in 4 weeks.

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 12/09/2013 19:48

I weighed in at 5pm. I knew it was likely to add a little weight compared to a morning weigh-in but evening is the only time I'm near a boots now that I'm back at work.

I haven't had a proper fd this week being in yet another bout of pms. My implant was replaced in march so, apparently, that's what's messing with my cycle and increasing the effects.

Talkinpeace · 12/09/2013 20:10

SNACKS FOR A FAST DAY
If you need to eat on a fast day, make it be something that takes a while but is very calorie empty.

Choice 1 A bowl of miso soup (stock cube, spoonful of miso paste, half a spring onion, pour boiling water over), served in a lovely bowl at the table with the other half of the spring onion sprinkled on top.
Around 15 calories, takes half an hour, feels like lunch

Choice 2 A whole large carrot peeled and cut into big chunks that take a lot of chewing. Ideal for at a desk. Takes around 20 minutes to eat. Bugger all calories.

And remember, whatever you have, drink a pint of water before preparing it to make sure you actually are hungry, rather than just thirsty.

MissStrawberry · 12/09/2013 20:11

I am still struggling but it is emotional hunger not physical so I am not going to give in if I can help it. I am tired and a bit emotional (just buried our Guinea Pig) so it is a tough day.

BsshBossh · 12/09/2013 20:33

FD over. Easy fast, in fact - didn't feel hungry once. Broke the fast with grapes, an apple and then a tuna fish and green olive rice salad.

3 days of houseguests from tomorrow, a big multiple birthday bash (not mine) on Saturday. But it doesn't matter cause it's 3 NFDs whoooop!
