The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

I'm on my second fast day today and so far have had nothing but water! I don't actually feel hungry, although I do feel very thirsty. I think it's easy to underestimate the water content of food and I need to remember to drink more when Im fasting. I'm aiming for the calories today to be nearer 500 than 600.

Dotty342kids · 12/09/2013 10:24

Who mentioned chelsea buns? Some of us are on fast days you know Shock

MissStrawberry · 12/09/2013 11:32

I am fasting today. Currently feeling genuine hunger pangs but keep drinking water instead. DH didn't remember and brought me a buttered fruit teacake while I was ironing. Obviously I ate it as it was lovely of him to do it. Planning on jacket potato for dinner so should still be well under 500 cals. If anything thinks I could eat something before dinner, let me know!!

ZipIt · 12/09/2013 11:47

Hello all, can you I join you on the thread please?
I'm attempting my first fast day today, and could do with some moral support. I'm actually doing this for health reasons rather than weight loss. So far I just feel a bit dizzy. Trying to make it through to the evening meal so I can go to bed feeling full-ish. Don't think sleeping is easy hungry - anyone have any tips for this?
Hope you're all having a good day.

ZipIt · 12/09/2013 11:50

P.S. what I'm really dreading is going without beer/wine this evening Blush - I didn't realise how much I look forward to this when I'm at work!

ZipIt · 12/09/2013 11:59

Oh, sorry, another quick, slightly unsavoury, question - does anyone find this not-eating thing gives them rather bad breath?! Is there anything you can do about this?

Thank you, lovely people.

Dotty342kids · 12/09/2013 12:16

zipit drink lots, and lots, of water! Smile

ZipIt · 12/09/2013 12:41

Thanks Dotty, I will do so.
How much liquid do people drink?
I know technically drinking too much is dangerous, but presumably we need more when there's no food going in?

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 12/09/2013 12:48

Hello everyone, hope it is ok to join the thread?

My DH has been doing this for a month, and has lost 9lbs and looks so much slimmer so I thought I would give it a go too.
First fast day was Tuesday, I did pretty well - I think I ate around 700 calories, most of those in my evening meal.

What really surprised me was how calm I felt. Less shouty, less grumpy with DH, and I slept like a log and felt fabulous when I woke up the next morning. Amazing!

I am fasting today too, I think Tuesday and Thursday are going to be my regular days, sensible eating and steer away from the junk Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and then not worry over the weekend.

Very interesting to read about the hormones and hunger spikes.

NotAsTired · 12/09/2013 13:12

Hi everyone, not posting but still lurking.

Not had a great week in terms of my eating patterns. It's been all over the place. Unhealthyish and no set pattern of eating at certain times, which is always a sign of me being stressed. Sad For the first time since I started 5:2 I've even snacked in the evening, a couple of times.

I have not done a single fast for over a week, and generally feeling a bit yuk. I NEED to get back on track.

I'm finding the new term quite exhausting. I do supply teaching but unfortunately I do not have long term supply this year so I'm doing day to day supply. I can cope with the stress of dealing with challenging classes whom I have never met before, but not if I am fasting. Fasting and the great unknown of what kind of class am I going to have is too much. Does that make sense?

Hopefully, I will be more positive next week.

Sorry, it's been me me me.

Gilbertus · 12/09/2013 13:30

2nd fast day of the week here and my tummy is rumbling! Think I might have a can of chickpea dahl soup when I get home from work about 3pm. Iirc its about 240 cals.

Or on Monday I had a hard boiled egg (80 cals???) which kept me feeling really full until supper

seems mad that one egg can make someone feel full Shock

Gilbertus · 12/09/2013 13:31

zipit I drink lots of water and have a pack of chewing gum in the car as I am convinced my breath stinks by lunchtime on a FD Smile

Breadandwine · 12/09/2013 13:42

Chelsea buns - there has been a recipe for these calorie counted buns on the 5:2 recipe thread for a while now. Not for a fast day, probably, but perfectly fine for our NFDs at 160 cals per bun.

Welcome to all those joining us here - it does get easier, promise!:)

One tip i can give you is to read the OP carefully - and follow the links. There's some amazing research linked to in that post!

ZipIt · 12/09/2013 13:49

Gilbertus, I didn't think of chewing gum - thanks.
Also, have just discovered that peppermint tea (strong - two bags in it) makes me feel more breath-confident (or is it just that I'm so hungry I don't care....??).
NotAsTired, I can't comment from a 5:2 perspective because I'm a novice, but I know that any previous health routines I've had always have to have times when it all goes to pot. The fact you're trying to get back on track is all that matters. Tiring/stressful work is a bugger for making it all go wrong (temporarily...). Hope you feel better about it all soon.

SchrodingersFanny · 12/09/2013 13:50

I don't feel calm on FDs. Today I am tired and grumpy. 1 year old is tired, but won't nap, 4 year old keeps trying to force feed me. DH is working from home for first time in new job and annoying me by getting in my way.

ZipIt · 12/09/2013 13:55

Breadandwine* - what a cruel name you have Grin

Dotty342kids · 12/09/2013 14:05

notastired I've got lots of work stress at the moment too (woke up obsessing about it at 3.30 this morning Sad ) so do know how you feel.
I'm fasting today and was planning a salmon with crushed chickpeas, spinach and garlic for dinner but now I have to work from 7-8 and DH informs me he won't be home till after eight. Not sure I'll have the energy or inclination to cook by that point.
But have salmon in the fridge and don't want to waste it. Aaargh!

MissStrawberry · 12/09/2013 14:17

I am sooooooooooooo hungry. Keeping going though. 4 3/4 hours until dinner.

ZipIt · 12/09/2013 14:22

4 hours 37 minutes....

Blimey, how do you all manage to DO this?!

BsshBossh · 12/09/2013 14:43

ZipIt (welcome, by the way!) - you do get used to it. I'm eight months into 5:2 and no longer fear hunger; I know I'm not going to starve and I've grown to like the feeling of an empty stomach (well, for 2 days a week at least, and I've had my fair share of hard, hard fast days). Stick at it!

eatriskier · 12/09/2013 14:52

Zip like Bssh says! I find hunger out of normal meal times irritating but I'm not scared of it at all. Also it starts feeling nice to detox yourself a bit with a fast day. I feel so much cleaner and healthier when I manage to successfully fast.

Dotty342kids · 12/09/2013 14:54

Yup, me three!
You WILL feel better, we promise Grin

ZipIt · 12/09/2013 15:18

BsshBossh, eatriskier, Dotty342kids - thank you Smile

Your words have made me resist the lure of the biscuit tin (mmm, biscuits...). Actually, it does seem to come in waves, and so far even the really strong ones do pass fairly quickly.
You must be strong people, though - am mightily impressed.

SchrodingersFanny · 12/09/2013 16:11

I'm really struggling today. Just caved and had a 50 calorie slim a soup. It was either that or data whole packet if Maryland cookies.

I don't enjoy being hungry, I'm not scared I just want to eat so much. I can't concentrate, I'm tired and snappy.

I feel like I'm getting worse at fasting. Not better. I thought it was supposed to get easier?

BsshBossh · 12/09/2013 16:14

ZipIt don't worry - Dotty, eatriskier and myself are much further down the 5:2 line than you. Well done for resisting the biscuit tin - you can have a biscuit tomorrow:)

My mum has just started 5:2 this week and she was thinking of snacking on an FD because she felt a little "peckish". Then she remembered feeling "peckish" is no reason to snack and was able to hold out until her dinner. She also always has a snack at 9pm but since starting fasting this week she realised she doesn't actually feel hungry for that snack (even on non-fast days) - that it's just habit. She's a fast learner :)
