BetsyBell · 24/08/2013 11:15

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Dotty Hope you've had a good fast day :)

MissS Your DS has been sent home? So a sick bug rather than food poisoning. Horrid. Hope you're feeling a bit better now.

Ok, me me me bit...

I'm really pleased with myself today. No issues with fasting at all, ate a small salad lunch (making 18 hours 'true' fast) and just had a seriously tasty meatball in tomato sauce based dinner. That's it. No drama, no hunger, lots of cycling and rushing about.

Fasted today, despite only doing my last one on Sunday, as a response to the amount I ate yesterday - I don't calorie count but I ate a good third more than I need in a day!

So my Lifestyle Change Victory is to be able to easily pop a fast into my routine as a response to eating to excess the day before.

Very happy about that Grin

First FD after several weeks off for Summer hols, back on the wagon, not been too bad. Just waiting for my chorizo encrusted cod fillet (courtesy of Hairy Bikers new diet cookbook) to bake.

Decide to aim for 9st, that will be a total of 2.5st off then see how I feel, unfortunately due to having a tiny frame and being 5'2" I could be about 7 st and still within the normal BMI range!

MissStrawberry · 10/09/2013 19:09

Yes, BetsyBell, a stomach bug. Lots of little 3 year olds not washing their hands and you get kids going down like flies and it was my DS's turn today Sad.

Talkinpeace · 10/09/2013 20:24

MissStrawb September is notorious for summer bugs going round

Well I've had three full on buffet meals today - but I did do 1/2 hour of yoga in my hotel room before breakfast.
AND
I went no carb, salad instead of veg and spuds and skipped puddings : and did not stay in the bar till 1:30 like some of the group
so feel ready to be disciplined for the rest of the week.

SchrodingersFanny · 10/09/2013 20:27

Did OK, then ate nuttella out of the jar. Husband is away all week and children not sleeping. Both 4 and 1 year old are still awake, and I have loads of work to do.

BsshBossh · 10/09/2013 20:46

Great LCV Betsy.

swallowedAfly · 10/09/2013 21:07

still only really managed mini fasts so far and still pre menstrual. going to weigh myself in the morning and see where i'm at.

hope everyone is doing well. too busy to keep up or post much at the minute. hopefully be around more once i get this bid finished and submitted at the end of the week.

alwaysanauntie · 10/09/2013 21:19

Well done to all the no nonsense Tuesday fasters Wink! Went ok for me too although did cave and have 2 digestives with my afternoon tea (still came in under 500 & it was just so damn cold!).

schrod totally know what you mean, many an empty jar of nutella has been hidden from my dh due to my eating it with a spoon habit... It has lessened over the last few months and I'm purposely not buying any more to try and avoid the temptation. Hope the little ones are fast asleep now.

missS i really don't envy you at the moment! Hope you all get better soon.

TiP, betsy, mrsf and anyone else with great lcvs/nsvs: hurrah, so nice that old habits are shifting & making way for the new you (& new clothes!) :)

southeastdweller · 10/09/2013 22:21

itsaboat Your salad sounds delicious!

Well done for today Betsy, dotty prawn (glad to see you're back) wriggle and schrod (how much nutella did you have? A little would do little or no damage).

Fast day almost over and all was going well (didn't eat until 12.30 and made good choices) but in the afternoon l I ate two cookies from the office biscuit box, the cookies that are about 3 inches wide Blush. I work in a tense environment most of the time and often feel like I need a 'crutch' to get through the day...and yes you've guessed it, it's food. But on the way home tonight I looked back and realised that it doesn't have to be crap - some nuts or a piece of fruit fulfills my need, especially since doing this WOL...I just need to be more organised and bring this in more on my fast day (I'm maintaining). Had a fab miso soup from Itsu, a small piece of cheese and a little veg for dinner. Looking forward to cracking open my bottle of mulled wine tomorrow and chips in Brighton on Thursday Smile.

Good luck for tomorrow, fasters.

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 10/09/2013 22:31

Everyone's sounding positive today -apart from poor MasterStrawberry! of course.

FD tomorrow and I'm clocking 750 for it but I have been about 75% tdee yesterday and today.

My biggest - and best - lcv is saying no to snacks. Such a change and it's because I know that - as long as I'm getting fluids - I'm no longer scared of being hungry.

Itsaboatjack · 11/09/2013 08:02

Morning all. FD for me today and I started the day making a bacon sarnie for dh, it's his birthday today but we're not going out for dinner until tomorrow when his brother and his wife are visiting, hence fasting today.

SouthEast is it cold enough for mulled wine yet? Grin

Dotty342kids · 11/09/2013 09:08

Morning all. Got on scales this morning after fast day and.......... yup, still the same! Damn this plateau!
I have a nasty feeling that the only way I'm going to get it shifting again is to go back to recording all my NFD food on MFP to ensure I'm safely in or around the 1700 cal region which is right for me.
It was weird as this week I've felt lighter, if you know what I mean, and was almost certain I'd see a drop of 1lb.
Oh well Sad.
Fast day again tomorrow so maybe on Friday!

alwaysanauntie · 11/09/2013 10:10

helles that's a great lcv, I'm getting better with no snacking, but now i look better it's tempting to revert so i have to keep reminding myself to save it for the weekend!

itsa wow, a tough start to your fd. Make sure you polish your halo for not having a big bite Grin

dotty try not to take it to heart too much, have you measured lately? If you're feeling lighter maybe you're still loosing inches? I've dropped my tdee to what it would be at goal to rein in my nfd eating, plus i just can't trust myself to eat the right amount without logging. Hopefully if you do restart mfp things will shift & at least you've got the hang of maintaining without gaining :)

Talkinpeace · 11/09/2013 10:43

Dotty
What is your TDEE for your target weight?
My TDEE is only just over 1500 ..... so for you 1700 might be a bit high

eatriskier · 11/09/2013 10:48

No snacking definitely helps, its definitely a good lcv!

itsa that is phenomenal willpower

Well the hormonal want to eat everything is beginning to calm down so am hoping that fasting tomorrow will go ok. I was meant to be having the mirena put back in (well a new one put in) today so was expecting another bout of hormonal stuff my facing. Except the sodding receptionist who'd spend ages trying to accuse me of purposely removing it in the first place (because obviously you pull these things out and ask for new ones regularly Hmm) screwed up my appt so mine and the drs time was wasted this am, as well as dh's as he stayed with the kids whilst I was there. I was then nicely offered an appt for 6 weeks time. Nearly did my nut but thankfully the dr went mental for me Angry. So there'll be some resumption of hormonal eating in 2 weeks now. Feel a bit better for the rant now

Dotty342kids · 11/09/2013 10:53

tip am fairly sure that's right. Am 5"4 and 10st 7lbs at present.
I really want to get to 10st 4ish as then I'll be in healthy BMI range and will have a bit of leeway to stay safely under 10st 7.

Weirdly, i have gone done another belt notch actually alwaysanauntie which is my way of measuring as tape measure doesn't really work for me (as am apple shape am never sure I'm measuring in exactly the same place each time!)

eatriskier hope all the Mirena issues are sorted out soon, sounds like a right nuisance Smile

MissStrawberry · 11/09/2013 11:55

MasterStrawberry is fine. Seems like a one hit downer. He will go back to school tomorrow.

Was all set to try a 24 fast as had planned 3 fasts this week but was greeted this morning by said boy running in to my room in tears saying the Guinea Pig was dead Shock. DH rushed down and he was very still but still alive. Phoned OOH vet and took him straight down. He had to be put to sleep Sad. He was 5 and we had had him exactly 4 years as he came home 11.9.09. His girlfriend is inside now and hiding.

So, no fasting and have made a cake to cheer the children up and to celebrate GP's life.

And there is a leak in my en suite....

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 11/09/2013 18:13

I won't be doing fd on a wednesday again. The school timetable - and lunch break - changes and it totally throws me off. Try again tomorrow.

When I'm tempted to snack, I have added to my existing self-response of "have a cuppa" with "if you eat now, you'll be hungry at this time tomorrow". Something to do with ghrelin.

Emmabryant123 · 11/09/2013 18:48

Fd tommorow. Weight has shot up by 7 pounds over the last few days so I need one quick lol...
Pint of water upon waking up...
Breakfast: cuppa coffee from machine at work (8kcal)...
Lunch: cuppa coffee from machine at work (8kcal)...
Dinner : tin of tomato soup (Heinz) 236 calories but I don't know what else to have with it. Don't have much else in and can't afford a shop till Friday. I have pasta, rice, beans chicken in and potatoes. Any ideas?

Emmabryant123 · 11/09/2013 19:45

Change of plans.
Have just hard boiled an egg to take to work and have about 3-3:30pm on last break along with a banana.
Then dinner is a whole tin of baked beans the bed. Figured baked beans were quite filling and it's all I have in lol,
Total calories will be 578 calories as I've included milk for teas/coffees.

BreakOutTheKaraoke · 11/09/2013 20:17

2nd fast day of the week for me, just wondering whether to change it up a bit and add a third tomorrow. Definitely did damage over the 6 weeks holidays, I'm fed up of sabotaging myself now- I want to lose the weight, so why do I keep overeating? I know that it leads to my jeans feeling too tight again!

BsshBossh · 11/09/2013 20:30

Helles please tell me more about ghrelin and eating...

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 11/09/2013 21:40

BsshBossh ghrelin is sometimes called the hungry hormone. It is the hormone that gives us appetite.

I first read about it increasing the desire for high-calorie foods which means that, as your ghrelin levels increase, you will make increasingly more irrational food choices. Interestingly, some people seem to be able to override this and these people tend to maintain a lower weight.

I recently read that ghrelin levels cycle according to previous eating patterns. This makes sense - you know you get hungry about half an hour or so before you usually eat. However, a habit of eating at a particular time is not necessary. One experience can trigger a ghrelin-spike at that same time on the following day.

At my work, the lunch break is 1305-1345 except on wednesdays when it is 1205-1245. As a result, I am hungry at 1200 on a thursday.

As many more experienced 5:2ers have posted, don't snack - eat what you're craving with meals. Otherwise, it is harder still to avoid snacking the next day.

Hope that all makes sense and isn't too waffley!

JB30 · 11/09/2013 22:05

V interesting Belles, something to be conscious of. I'm meant to be fasting tomorrow, but there's a few things that are going to make it toughConfused Since I managed a 1 meal FD on Monday, I'd love to do it again. Hmm, will just have to work on distraction ploys. Hot drinks and water, maybe a walk at lunchtime if weather permits.
Can't wait for Friday! Anyone else wishing their life away? DH away all week, between morning routine , work, evening routine, pretty tired. Serious hats off to single parents, I'm a wuss, hard work

headintheclouds · 11/09/2013 23:07

dotty try weighing yourself tomorrow morning, sometimes ive gone down a day later ! sometimes there doesnt seem to be rhyme or reason to this.
I keep wondering if we get to a certain weight and just 'stick' there.I think Im now on a plateaux..Ive not actually gone down any for 4 weeks now( obviously I went up 5 lbs on holiday and down 5 lbs after returning, but Ive been the same for last 2 weeks.)
Im still on higher end on normal BMI so Id like to see another 7 lbs off.
BUT ive been getting so many NSVs ,I feel marvellous.
Had to buy new work clothes at the weekend because my 'old' clothes are baggy. Size 12 trousers ,so Im happy. I was told by a work colleague that I looked amazing today..it does wonders for your confidence ( especially when youre hitting 50 Grin. DH says I look better than I have 'in years'.)
We are going away to Venice ( sans enfants) for my 50th in Nov so Id like to stay looking amazing for that!
I am still logging all food on MFP (NFDs as well as FDs) and Ive reduced my TDEE to 1580. im more focused if I write the food down.
Well good luck all Thursday fasters, and by the way dotty I had the Indian beans on toast last night when I got in from a late meeting..Oh my God they are really good..DH was drooling and demanded that I make it for him soon!
