BetsyBell · 24/08/2013 11:15

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Yay well done Bssh.
I'm also off to yoga now wildwater, I'm still relatively new to it but hoping it will strengthen my wobbly bits.

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 09/09/2013 19:32

You know your woe has changed when...

... you HAVE to have an ice cream to get your calories any where near tdee even though you have felt satisfied after every meal. I enjoyed it but not the way I used to.

I've struggled to get tomorrow to 1200. But I know I won't want another ice cream tomorrow so I'll stick there. FD's wed and fri this week.

Gilbertus · 09/09/2013 19:37

Back on 5 2 after a few weeks off (was poorly). Had nothing today except tea, just had small portion of homemade fish pie so hoping not too many calories. Was planning a 4 3 this week but think I'll stick to 5 2 and just drop the wine Grin

eatriskier · 09/09/2013 19:40

FD turned into a mini fast. chicken and chips being devoured and a far happier me. figured that sometimes I've got to take the hit. and I'm still better off than a few months ago when I'd have stuffed my face and still eaten this. and anyway I've spent most of the day either on my criss trainer or pushing DS around in his buggy so I've exercised enough too (I know that's not the point of a fast day)

MissStrawberry · 09/09/2013 19:51

itsaboatjack - DH was saying to me about needing new clothes soon. I am bored with some of them but don't want to buy more while I still want to loose weight.

somewhere - Keep going. It will be worth it. Don't let your annoyance with your OH make you undo your good work.

eatriskier - hope your day got better.

I had a crumpet this morning and shepherd's pie for dinner and came in at 534 so I think that counts as a FD. I am planning on doing 4:3 this week.

I haven't been doing any 24 hour fasts. Should I have been?

Itsaboatjack · 09/09/2013 21:14

eatriskier I think it's a 'lifestyle change victory' to be able to let a FD go and it become a mini fast without getting the 'well I've blown it now, I may as well stuff my face attitude'.

MissS I am having to restrain myself from getting too many and just get a few basics until I get down to my goal weight.

I'm feeling really hungry tonight, not head hungry for once but proper rumbly tummy. I know it will pass though.

MaccaPaccaismyNemesis · 09/09/2013 21:22

Hello all, hope all of the Monday fasters are doing ok?

Have done my first fd this week, and am gradually getting better at having a late (2pm) 100 cal 'lunch' and a nice big dinner. I did eat an entire cucumber today at lunch which got some funny looks! That, 2 ryvita, a chopped up tomato and a celery stick and I was nice and full. I did discover though that cucumber is a natural diuretic Shock. Spent a lot of the afternoon peeing like a racehorse!! Grin

eatriskier · 09/09/2013 21:25

itsa definitely a lifestyle change victory. I didn't even finish the chips Grin. Stick in there, you'll be fine and you know it! more lcv

Asheth · 09/09/2013 21:49

Completed my first fast day at just under 600 calories, so feel quite pleased with myself! Looking forward to eating normally tomorrow with another fast day on Thursday. I do feel hungry now - any tips for beating that?

Itsaboatjack · 09/09/2013 22:15

Well done Asheth. The hunger will pass, try having a glass of water or a herbal tea, or go to bed.

eatriskier · 10/09/2013 07:52

Well scales are showing .5lb up this morning. Though I had quite an indulgent weekend, had that massive dinner last night, a bad nights sleep and a nasty unexpected aunt flo visit. .5lb seems perfectly reasonable under the circumstance and I'll sure will be gone after Thursday's fast.

That's got to be another good thing about this woe surely. Not being worried so much by weight bounces and knowing you can correct it later - my diet hasn't gone to pot because I didn't stick to 500 calories yesterday

MelanieCheeks · 10/09/2013 08:04

MissS some people count a "day" as 24 hours, but most of us find it simpler to do the eat-sleep-500 cals-sleep-eat approach.

Yesterday wasn't too bad - I did succumb to a slice of swiss roll that an office colleague had brought in, which probably wasnt completely counterbalanced by DH nicking one of my chicken skewers at dinner time. But I did zumba and walk the dogs....

FD again tomorrow, and then away with friends for the weekend, where not one calorie will be counted! (Sailing and walking though, which I'm looking forward to)

BetsyBell · 10/09/2013 08:41

Lots of new starters yesterday! Welcome :) , how did you all get on with it?

I think today is going to be a fast day, finally back to normal routine so can easily manage it. Yesterday I did not want to stop eating all day so need a day off!

OP posts:
wrigglebum · 10/09/2013 09:12

Well done to all those who fasted yesterday, especially first timers.

Fast day here, it'll be a struggle after a 5.30am wake up though, already craving stodge. Had a big lunch yesterday after picking DS up from first day of school and I felt so bloated and gross afterwards. Too carb heavy for me I think, but was lovely. DS loved school and ran there this morning all excited, phew!

Dotty342kids · 10/09/2013 09:44

Betsy I'm fasting today too as couldn't last night due to going out for dinner with friends. Dinner tonight will be after zumba toning, at about 7.30 and boy, will I be hungry by then!

MrsFlorrick · 10/09/2013 10:06

Morning everyone! Grin

Congrats on all those losses. So many inspirational people on here. Breadandwine. Congrats on your grandson!

Busy couple of weeks with little time to post.

I have been doing Jillians 6 week 6 pack for almost two weeks now. I was shredding but it seemed "too easy" if there is such a thing.

Scales have not moved so I assumed no fat loss. Well not true. I can just about squeeze into my Max Mara and Jigsaw size 12 trousers. And I tried on a pair of size 12 trousers in Allsaints and they just about fitted.

That really surprised me!! I am also wearing a size 10 Shock Fat Face skirt and its loose.

Anyway I am, despite scales not moving at all, on the cusp of wearing all my old clothes again. I can even get my smallest 7for all mankind jeans on (size 30 but they are effectively a size smaller than Jigsaw with same size label). Ok they go on but muffin top so am not wearing until they look good.

I have only managed mini fasts of just under 1000 cals but I am 16/8 every day along with the highly effective Jillian workout.

I am rambling but I am amazed. I still want to lose that last stone and I am sure the scales will move soon.

Anyway for me this is a serious non scale victory!!

FD yesterday for me. Have successfully managed fasting again after my holidays, but this weeks WI had stayed the same. Am now trying to lose another 7 lbs to reach my next target.. I was in no hurry to lose it but have now got a glam awards ceremony to attend end October , so would be lovely to have a slinky dress for the occasion !
Good to have a goal.. But I'll have to get on S&B thread for dress recommendations !
Good luck all new starters, this WOE is great.. I've been a slow burner but started end of Jan at 11st 2 and have lost 17 lbs since, down a dress size to 9 st 13 lbs and feeling great.

Dotty342kids · 10/09/2013 10:22

Oh hitc you'll make it I'm sure! You've done so well to lose all of that, I started a couple of weeks after you and have got "stuck" on my 14lb loss. Grrrr. Would love to get to the low 10's as opposed to the 10st 7 - 10st 9 range that I'm in.
Still, I know others have had longer plateaux than me so there's hope yet Smile
And we'll expect photos of you in the slinky dress when you get it Grin

TrucksAndDinosaurs · 10/09/2013 12:01

Oh Mrs F I am so happy for you! I know how badly you wanted to start getting back in those lovely clothes! :)

I am doing 6 week 6 pack and am almost 2 weeks in too. Do you want to hang out on my thread?
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/exercise/1839998-Jillian-Michaels-6-week-6-pack-anyone-want-to-re-start-with-me

TrucksAndDinosaurs · 10/09/2013 12:09

PS: I am doing 16:8 as well and mini fasts - it actually seems to be working better for me and I have a lot more energy. I found 500 calorie fasts and 20 hour fasts plus getting up at 5.30am and still breastfeeding 4x day and working out were draining me and actually causing body to slow down and hang onto weight. So now its 16:8 low carb, most days come in about 1200 calories and weekends I push it and get about 1800 calories in. I have much more energy, enjoy the clean hunger and energy of my fasting mornings, work out hard and then have a protein based salad lunch.

I still feel like I'm getting fasting benefits without shocking my body too much. I read that 14 -16 hours fasting was highly beneficial for women without shocking the delicate hormonal balance too much. At 42, I'm close to peri menopause and breastfeeding is also a strain on my body in some ways. I had bad hair loss after pregnancy and the first two years of DS life were a terrific strain so this woe is all about health and cherishing myself rather than brutal weight loss now.

Itsaboatjack · 10/09/2013 14:24

Well do e yesterday's fasters, and good luck for those doing it today. I've just broken my fast with a delicious spinach, asparagus and goats cheese salad with almonds and pecans. Very calorific but all good nutritious calories I think. I also managed a 7 mile run this morning and day 10 of the 30 day plank challenge.

Trucks I think your plan sounds very sensible. I'm trying to get out of the mindset of weight loss being the ultimate goal and pushing too hard to get there, and instead just trying to focus on making as many good healthy decisions regarding food and exercise each day as I can.

MrsF good work on doing the 6w6p, I find it really really hard. My core is quite weak which is why I'm doing the 30 day plank challenge. I managed 1min15secs today, maybe when I've finished it I should give the 6w6p another go.

hitc you've done do well, I'm sure you'll be in that slinky dress very soon.

Dotty hope your FD is going well and you're off that plateau soon.

wrigglebum · 10/09/2013 14:43

As predicted, I'm struggling today. Had a 100 cal lunch but sort of wish I hadn't. Feeling a bit woozy now but it will pass. Got a yummy dinner of pesto chicken, sweet potato and veg to look forward to this evening.

MissStrawberry · 10/09/2013 14:46

Poorly boy had to be picked up from school and seems fine but has to stay off for 48 hours now. I still get the odd stomach cramp pain so not quite 100% yet.

Still really struggling to eat the full 1800 I am meant too. I no longer eat for the sake of it. Make sure I am hungry. If I am wanting something on a FD I tell myself I can have it tomorrow but then aren't hungry much.

Today I have had 2 crumpets for breakfast and lunch was a 3 rivita crackers with cheese and chutney. Full.

MrsFlorrick · 10/09/2013 16:28

Trucks. I will be delighted to head over and join you for some chat on Jillian Grin thank you.

I just have to deal with tired whiny DC dinner and bed time first. Sigh.

SchrodingersFanny · 10/09/2013 16:54

I am fasting. Hard at work with lively teenagers! I keep telling myself "must not eat"

IT seems I am thinking about how hungry I am more. I'm having scrambled egg on toast for tea.
