The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

I'm on a bit of a go-slow at the moment, with 2 x 750ish calorie "fasts".

I am hoping I maintain - I think I will.

The "problem" is I look OK in clothes now (but not naked) and fit back in my normal wardrobe so my motivation is flagging.

I might start again in earnest after my 45th in a few weeks time.

BsshBossh · 30/08/2013 20:21

Hello all! Haven't been around much, haven't fasted for weeks, haven't been particularly careful watching my food, haven't had time to exercise much...

... Have gained 4 lbs. But this is nothing compared to the 70 lbs I've lost since last year so I'm not concerned - it'll come off when I'm focussed...

... Which will be from next week when school and work resume.

Back in the game from next Tuesday. Hurrah!

NotAsTired · 30/08/2013 20:42

Welcome back BsshBossh, you are right, 4lb is nothing. Bring on Tuesday Smile.

Thank you to everyone for your congratulations. postmanpatscat I am 4ft 10 ish. Bit of a short arse.

Totally agree with TIP that BMI for Asian is based on empirical evidence and one that I am not willing to ignore, especially given the family history. I am the only member in my family who does not take medication for high blood pressure, diabetes or high cholesterol.

So I still have a few lbs to shed.

Talkinpeace · 30/08/2013 21:10

Lizza
be more amitious in your clothes .... I'm 48 and I get away with strappy tops, mini skirts hotpants and this summer a wetsuit ....

MrsMinkBernardLundy · 30/08/2013 21:43

Hi. i have a question. i have been on low carb for about 18 months. i fast oney or two days per work depending whether i am maintaining or losing.
I have lost a couple of stone and pretty much kept it of.

but by about 3 o clock on most fast days i have a really sore headache.

Is it just me or for other people get this?
As i keep a low carb diet most of the time i think my insulin levels are pretty good and so i would think i switch to fat burning pretty easy. but still always the sore head. much worse during my period.

tomorrowweeat · 30/08/2013 23:32

LOL- drama Queen :-D

thinkcan · 30/08/2013 23:39

hellesbelles I never thought the muscle building would be reason enough for the scales not to budge downwards. It's true my smaller clothes are still fitting well and a couple of people at the gym commented yesterday that I have lost weight. Still I am 5 lbs more than I was a month ago and that can't be good right? I am now 7 lbs more than what I need to be for a BMI of 23. Just have to work out now how to fit in 2 days of 500 calories with 2 weekend non-dieting days and 4 days of biking and hiking during the week. I definitely can't diet on hiking days and may try dieting on cycling days since my weekday rides are usually less than an hour long - 45 min of uphill climb followed by 15 min of freewheeling it practically all the way home. If that still doesn't work, I may give up one hiking day as I think at this stage it is more important I stick to 2 days of fasting. What do you think?

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 30/08/2013 23:47

ThinkCan weight is only one measure of health and fitness. If several other measures - how you feel, how your clothes fit, how far you can hike and cycle - are improving, then weight is irrelevant.

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 30/08/2013 23:52

ThinkCan if you are eating aroundbyour tdee on nfd's and doing 2 fd's then the only reason for weight gain can be muscle gain.

In short, I think you should not give up exercise in order to lose weight when you are clearly fit and slimming down.

The only thing I would suggest is getting in some yoga or similar to lengthen your muscles and loosen your joints. It won't affect your weight though.

MrsMinkBernardLundy · 30/08/2013 23:59

thinkcan if you are worrying you cannot fit all those days of exercise and fasting into the week...then i often train on fast days. it is fine as long as you do not overdo it and preferably exercise quite early. then again i do get mental headaches Hmm

I do a very similar cycle to yours from sounds of it and will do it fast days. it supposedly help the adaption.

postmanpatscat · 31/08/2013 06:33

Morning all :)

Welcome back bssh I agree 4lbs is neither here nor there.

missS hope all is ok, well done for staying strong.

thinkcan perhaps scale back one of your exercise sessions if fasting? I find first thing in the morning I can exercise as normal but I'll often flag later. Be guided by your body.

eatriskier · 31/08/2013 08:06

anyone else feel out of whack with the bank hol? in the end I didn't really skip any fasts at all over my break, but didn't stick to 500 for one and had several well over Tdee days. got 2 successful fasts under my belt since but still not feeling back. wondering if its coz I did Tues/Thurs instead of Mon/Thurs. looking forward to next week

or maybe it's coz I feel like someone is holding my head underwater Confused

Lizzabadger · 31/08/2013 08:19

You are right TIP, thanks (though I'm not sure the world wants to see me in hot pants at any weight!)

Yes, me too, Eatriskier. I usually fast on Mondays which are a busy day at work. Switched to Tuesday this week which was much less successful.

Thinkcan - I certainly wouldn't do less exercise to lose weight. You want to lose fat, not weight per se, and exercise can only help with this (as well as having many other benefits). As others have said you may want to fit in some flexibility and strength training too/in place of some of the cardio.

thinkcan · 31/08/2013 11:01

Lots of good advice. Thank you. In addition to my four days of hiking and biking, I also do 3 days of weights per week at the gym. That's why I am thinking of scaling back on my hiking and focussing on getting 2 fasting days a week - at least until I get my BMI down to 23. Good suggestion about the yoga/muscle lengthening exercises. And about fitting in the exercises early in the day. So far, I find that fasting during weight training days is not an issue, fasting on days when I bike in the morning is doable but fasting on hiking days is impossible as we hike in the late afternoons and the hikes always involve hill work and are at least 5 km long. I get very hungry on hiking days.

SomewhereBeyondTheSea · 31/08/2013 13:06

Hi all! Just checking in. No weight loss this week but I've found that I fit easily into a blouse I bought about 5 years ago that was on the right side even then (and then it didn't fit at all, as the weight piled on). So I guesstimate that I'm at my thinnest in a good 5 years at least. Talk about morale boosting! An a hot guy at work is flirting with me Blush

Eatriskier - yes I was thrown off completely by the bank holiday - family festivities meant that I had a bit of a trough and then a couple of work things this week have also involved eating lovely good (though a lot less than I would have done in the past!).
So I'm trying to have a very good weekend, to get back on track.

SomewhereBeyondTheSea · 31/08/2013 13:07

*tight side - not right side !!

wrigglebum · 31/08/2013 13:18

Great NSV Somewhere!

Well I haven't been too successful fasting this week- managed one fast day then lack of sleep got the better of me so I'm just skipping a few breakfasts and being sensible with the eating instead.

Well, my size 12s are getting a bit big now and I can get into a size 10 in Next and FatFace jeans without too much breathing in or muffin top. This morning I got a new low weight too- 9st13.8. So ridiculously just into the 9s but I'm happy with that Smile.

Still shredding when I can- level 2 is hard. I was able to do the harder exercises on level 1 by the end of that, but no chance for level 2! Oh well, I'll do the beginner exercises on L2 and L3 this time then come back to it after a bit more exercise and aim for the harder ones.

Planning to go to a designer outlet place with a friend soon for a bit of a shop, she's dropped a couple of dress sizes too (Slimming World), so we'll both be trying to fill up the wardrobe with some new clothes for our slimmer figures.

MissStrawberry · 31/08/2013 13:28

Hello

I have lost 2lbs having stayed the same for the last 2 weigh ins. Very happy.

Family life is pretty shit today so I don't want to eat anything.

Well done to everyone.

Lizzabadger · 31/08/2013 13:43

Congratulations MissS, Somewhere and Bum.

Hope things improve for you soon MissS.

MaccaPaccaismyNemesis · 31/08/2013 14:44

I think the stress of this week has worked because fasting has just not happened, another kg down so 87kg this morning Shock Grin

Lizzabadger · 31/08/2013 14:56

Oh god. 2 panini, 2 brie on toast, 2 fromage frais and I am going out for posh dinner. I NEED TO STOP EATING!!

SomewhereBeyondTheSea · 31/08/2013 15:02

Thanks Wrigglebum and Lizza :-)

I've just started reading a book I think someone on this thread originally recommended - the Beck Diet Solution. I've never bought a diet book before but OMG it's amazing, I'm so impressed with it. It's not a diet as such, it's basically cognitive behaviour therapy applied to over-eating and really highlights all my self-sabotaging ways of thinking. I'd recommend it to anyone who feels their willpower is in new of a boost!

SomewhereBeyondTheSea · 31/08/2013 15:02

*need. Bloody iPhone typing skills!

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 31/08/2013 15:26

I was wondering what that book was like somewhere - time to head to the library.

Redoing yesterday's fd after ricotta, mars bar crispy cake and cider defeated me. Had a yum lunch of bean stew and cous-cous. Very nice :)

Seriously craving chocolate, cake, bread, etc as pms and period pains continue but this has been defeated thus far by reading 'March, women, march' by Lucinda Hawksley. A really well-written book covering a wide span of the history of the fight for votes for women - just in case anyone is looking for their next book, I heartily recommend it.

JB30 · 31/08/2013 16:07

Down .8 of a pound - happy days!
Well done MissS, sorry to hear you're having a hard timeSad, hope the situation improves for you real soon.
Macca, a kg is excellent! About 2.2 pounds I think? That's what I need to lose to pass the 1 stone loss mark. At my current rate, I'm probably looking at 2-3 weeks. Old me would have been killing myself to reach it in a week (and failing), these days I'm in no rush.
Steak and chips for dinner , slobber, couple if glasses of Pinot, happy days
