The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Morning everyone.
Just reporting that I am one of the lucky ones after all! Returned from my holiday 5 lbs heavier on Monday mrning. Have fasted on tues/ Thursday , weighed in today and the 5 lbs has gone! Wow that has impressed me because previous holiday weight gains always take at least a month to shift from my before 5:2 days.
This WOE is fab...still have about 7 lbs to lose to be my happy weight and then I may even think about a bit lower ! have a good w/e all.
Off out for a bit of frantic back to school shopping now!

eatriskier · 30/08/2013 09:19

Clarice you can do it

hitc yay! I still haven't shifted my wedding weight but I suspect I needs to ahem deblock. hoping after Mondays fast ill be back where I was last Tues.

MissStrawberry · 30/08/2013 09:23

Can I just ask, do you count a week Monday to Sunday? I fasted Thursday last week and Monday this week so unsure if I need to fast again this week as it is two if I count Thursday-Wednesday. I plan to count Monday to Sunday from now on - roast lunch on a Sunday and then fast Mon and Thursday but I planned to fast today and wondered if that was right Confused.

yecartmannew · 30/08/2013 09:24

Not diet related but...

to those of you with anklebiters small children to look after when you are feeling really ill, when mine were little I could sometimes get away with playing hospitals or hotels with them for most of a day (where you are the patient or guest)

This involves them running around after you for a change! You may have to let them poke you with a stethascope or wrap bandages (can use loo roll) around you, but at least it keeps them entertained and you can have a good lie down on the sofa!

MissStrawberry · 30/08/2013 09:32

I wish I had thought of that when mine were small, yecartmannew. Brilliant idea!

yecartmannew · 30/08/2013 09:51

thanks

There is a supprising amount of things they can do, use a cardboard box to x ray you with and then draw the x ray to show you....make an obs chart and fill it in....... bring you drinks and snacks (if required) or for hotels make a menu (some magazine pictures of food to cut and stick if they are too young to write one).... housekeeping duties with a duster and a dustpan and brush......

and best of all it isn't lazy parenting (promise) its all good educational stuff!!!!

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 30/08/2013 10:22

MissS you fast two of seven. I can't imagine it matters which day of the week you start though monday makes sense if that is the first day of your week normally. I would personally say, that you have fasted once this week.

ThinkCan you're weighing yourself. If you are doing muscle building exercise - like weights, hillwalking and hill-biking - your weight is largely irrelevant as you fat-loss will be counteracted by muscle-gain. Get out a tape measure. Choose three points of your body, and track the measurements of those. Or track how your jeans fit. Or your shoe size. Or your bra back size.

somewherebecomingrain · 30/08/2013 11:35

Love the hotel/hospital idea - filing for later -

headintheclouds I agree it's a Christmas miracle the way the holiday weight melts off. Well done you.

hopefulgum it is amazing totally changes your relationship to food. Years ago I had a hippy friend who fasted and she'd eat humus avocado and bean sprouts for lunch and complain how filling it was. I was baffled and envious - she was v slim. Anyway suddenly avo humus and bean sprouts sounds AMAZING and like the fillingest most satisfying meal ever.

I was eating a read meal and ready soup on my fd on the principle that it was too stressful to cook - was boring you all with it iirc.

Anyway that made me feel v lethargic. Started craving something more healthy. Have gone to one meal of stir fry of brown rice, chicken, and piles of fresh veg. Feel so much better.

MissStrawberry · 30/08/2013 11:49

Thanks Helles. I will carry on fasting though I am not sure about dinner as I am doing sweet and sour chicken and rice but maybe I can have it but a smaller portion?

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 30/08/2013 12:29

Or just have the sweet and sour chicken and extra veg. I tend to ditch carbs on fd's because I seem to feel hungrier after having them.

JB30 · 30/08/2013 13:20

MissS that's what I do on fd's, smaller portion of whatever everyone else is having. If its homemade s&s, should be easy enough to calculate, ok, you can't have much rice - not a problem for me as a couple of spoons do me.
Just broke my fast with McD's - first time in ages! I was starved but shared a chips instead of having a full portion. Just wouldn't waste my precious Friday wine cals on crappy fries (had to have a few thoughWink)
Thai for dinner later, beansprouts instead of rice for me, yummy

yecartmannew · 30/08/2013 13:27

Feel sick now after eating a box of salad from the local deli

Note to self: next time have a small

It has to be said though, prior to 5:2 i would have had that same thing as a side salad with a large slice of quiche!

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 30/08/2013 13:39

Just used half of today's fd calories on a plate of fruit and a small lump of cheese. It was deliscious but I suspect it will be a struggle to wqit til evening for something else to eat!

MissStrawberry · 30/08/2013 14:32

DH came home with a lovely box of chocolates!! I can have them tomorrow though .

I confess it is Uncle Ben's Sweet and Sour sauce jar. Not bought in years, not sure kids have ever had it. I tipped in a punnet of button mushrooms and the chicken is thigh fillets. I am happy to have a smaller portion and just a soup spoonful of rice. I did crack half an hour ago and had a stick of celery but that doesn't count as apparently you burn more eating it than what is in it.

Lizzabadger · 30/08/2013 16:04

MissS that 'cracked and had a stick of celery' is really making me laugh!!

HellesBellesThinksSometimes · 30/08/2013 17:59

Oh my word! Ds is driving me insane eating lindor and, earlier, sausage rolls in front of me!

JB30 · 30/08/2013 18:51

MissS super jealous - not about the celery lol! We passed by a stand selling chocs earlier, I thought dh might injure himself by sliding in my drool but no, nor did it occur to the useless lummox to buy me some. Of course I could have bought them myself, of course, but I wanted him to Sad
Chocolate and flowers, things I live to be bought, looks like I better get my purse out! Mutters about useless unromantic sod of an irritating dh - are youse getting that he's irritating me a bit? Subtle aren't I.
Thai meal in, stuffed, enjoying a glass of wine

MissStrawberry · 30/08/2013 19:04

Okay. Just had a massive bombshell. Do not want to fail on another FD, especially as I think I had a bit more rice than allowed. Do not let me eat the chocolate.

Talkinpeace · 30/08/2013 19:19

MissStrawberry
Let rip. Let off steam here. You'll feel better for shouting at us.
You'll feel worse if you fall back on comfort eating.
Be empowered.

And I know its cheesy but this vid is just great for anybody feeling down at the weekend
www.muzu.tv/sugababes/stronger-music-video/252046/
and this is JUST BECAUSE

MissStrawberry · 30/08/2013 19:36

You are right. I will not eat any chocolate as I am not hungry and tomorrow I was going to try the one day a week of stuffing your face I have heard about Grin.

I have been well and truly screwed over but Karma will happen and I can sleep at night knowing I didn't break the law, commit a crime, fuck up big style.

Talkinpeace · 30/08/2013 19:38

Channel the wonderful Joy from Drop the Dead Donkey and her excellent little black book of revenge served straight from the freezer

Scoffing will make you feel bad.
Not scoffing will make you feel superior

MissStrawberry · 30/08/2013 19:47

Nearly cracked. Not going to though. Never allow myself to eat after 8 anyway since doing this and I won't fail now. Have a really bad headache though Sad.

TrucksAndDinosaurs · 30/08/2013 20:02

Keep going miss s. have a good cry or punch done cushions maybe? Usually helps me...

Flowers
Lizzabadger · 30/08/2013 20:09

Don't crack, MissS!

Have another celery blow-out if you really must.

MissStrawberry · 30/08/2013 20:12

Too wound up to cry but past that now tbh. Have a really bad headache. Is this the not eating headache I have read about as it started before the bombshell though that hasn't helped. Took 2 paracetomol a few minutes ago.
