Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 thread number 25- One year on from Dr Mosley's Horizon ep!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 05/08/2013 16:28

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Hi everyone, how are you all? Back after a weeks holiday and I really enjoyed myself, eat lots of ice cream but walked miles and miles. My sandals are shagged! The result is a gain of 1lb.

Anyway, back on it now with a fast day which I have really enjoyed strangely??

The good thing is that whilst away I didn't pig out, and chose sensible lunches (boots shapers meals mainly) so that I could enjoy myself food wise in the evening. I drank every night which is so unusual for me, so maybe that's why I've not packed on the usual 4-7lbs??

HellesBellesIsRenamed · 12/08/2013 20:22

Just over 90% of tdee today and fasting tomorrow. I noticed, at teatime, that my meal looked huge BUT it was less than I would have had before I started this woe. Sausage chips and beans - two sausages rather than three and 100g of chips instead of half a plateful. My meal expectations are definitely changing.

Talkinpeace · 12/08/2013 20:26

My meal expectations are definitely changing.
And that is the bit that conventional diet support misses out.
Training your brain that this is for ever, not just for a few weeks.
AS then it will be forever.

I did a 24 hour fast but then had a lovely big plate of pasta and bacon and eggs (v v old delia recipe) but no booze till I'm abroad now.

MissStrawberry · 12/08/2013 20:46

I am just hoping I don't lose for a few weeks and then nothing as what normally happens. Today I managed to fast even though DS would have tried the patience of a Saint. Currently on 393 calories. Do I need to make 500 or is that enough? I am doing this as I need to lose weight but want to continue with it even when the right weight as it has been immeasurably good for my food and eating issues.

EagleRiderDirk · 12/08/2013 20:50

Some things to report.

OH's first day has gone well, he's ended up on 607 but that's not bad considering he didn't really plan all that well and it was his first go. He's just discovered the joy of how good food tastes on fast days, declaring his cup of soup really lovely!

MFP gave me a birthday present today. It knocked 10 calories off my maintenance calories. bastard...

Finally I'm really coming round to how good exercise is on fast days. I used the gym loads before but really struggled to shift my tummy even when successfully dieting. I've only been back on my cross trainer for about 3-4 weeks, but my exceptionally flabby tummy is flattening. So much so that the belts that fit me then are getting too big, and I've gone down a knicker size!

Lizzabadger · 12/08/2013 20:54

Excellent ERD and Happy Birthday for ?yesterday!

Lizzabadger · 12/08/2013 20:55

Also excellent MissS!

Talkinpeace · 12/08/2013 20:55

MissStrawb
You will be doing 5:2 for the rest of your life, so a few weeks stability is neither here nor there if its is associated with invisible improvements to your blood chemistry.
Also, come term time when routines return, you can look at it strategically.
If you are no longer hungry, do not eat, but do not "starve yourself" as that way dysfunction lies

ERB
Another one finding that exercise on fast days vapourises abdominal fat!

JB30 · 12/08/2013 20:58

Not many who could say they lost a knicker size for a birthday pressie, now that's an nsv Erd Grin

Itsaboatjack · 12/08/2013 21:16

Hi. Back from my holidays. Actually I was back early last week but I've been all out of routine.

We all had a really good time, lots of fun, and even managed some relaxing by the pool with my book thanks to kids club. I was pretty good food wise over all, plenty of indulgences but all within reason and even went running a couple of times. I tried to get straight back to fasting when got home and had a couple of attempts at a fast but they failed, and then stupidly turned into binges! I've not been near the scales so don't know what the damage is.

Anyway new week and all that and I've managed a fast today, and even shredded.

Hope everyone is doing well, I'm going to read back a bit now and catch up a little.

wrigglebum · 12/08/2013 21:31

Well I've managed to fast so far today despite my sister and her three children arriving today! Nothing all day apart from some bovril at lunchtime, then homemade pork meatballs (very low fat pork) with tomato sauce and about 5 pasta bows for dinner, followed by a small handful of berries. Going to cheat now though and have some limoncello- got it for my birthday and saving it for when my sister got here as she's my limoncello drinking partner! Not sure if I'll fit in another fast day in the next couple of weeks due to visitors this week then back to stay with my parents next week. I'll just try to watch what I eat then get back to it after.

Gilbertus · 12/08/2013 21:55

Successful FD but I stupidly weighed myself this am and back to 11 stone which is so depressing. Sad will I never get beyond it?? TOM, hideously emotional and cross with myself for sending a grumpy email to someone. Horrible day tomorrow taking g the kids to a sports thing that they don't want to go to, as usual I've made too many plans when they should be chilling. Feeling really lowSad

southeastdweller · 12/08/2013 22:01

ERD Belated birthday greetings! Was there any Reeses Peanut Butter involved at all, in any capacity? Wink

Welcome back Betsy. It?s such a nice feeling, isn?t it, to know for sure you can get back on board and have that reassurance you can lose weight after a period of indulgence?

Welcome Everybody. No need to feel daunted, honestly there isn?t. Why not fast for one day this week?

hopeful Do you know your T.D.E.E? If not find out, keep to it and the weight will drop off. You can do it.

Lazy Well done on your nine pounds loss. It?s great you?re swimming and how about taking up some other interests, to not just help you lose some weight (by being busier) but also to meet new people?

Who was it who came up with the expression ?Close the kitchen down!" I find it really helpful and think of it often and even say it out loud to myself sometimes

HellesBellesIsRenamed · 12/08/2013 22:18

Gilbertus there is no-one who hasn't sent a snotty email - get in touch with the recipient, apologise, explain and restate what you should gave typed. If the kids think tomorrow will be rubbish, they'll probably really enjoy it. It's things he's been looking forward to that ds udually doesn't enjoy. Probably because nothing can match his expectations!

Before you weighed yourself, how were you feeling about your progress? Back when I was slim and fit, I put on weight while dropping a dress size because I was exercising and toning up. Concentrate on your waist measurement as that is the strongest indicator of health.

Sleep well tonight and wake refreshed ready for a great day :)

Cat98 · 12/08/2013 22:56

just going to bed after a successful fd. Weigh in tomorrow! I'm just wondering - are the health benefits still the same without the 16 hr gap? I'm fine with no food for 16 hours but I need my morning coffee!
I hope things are better for you miss strawberry. Sounds tough- I just skimmed the thread so far but saw about your troubles :(
Hope everyone is having a good week! We are going away tomorrow on holiday until Sunday so this week will probably just be 6:1, though I might try and have a light day during the holiday. Depends on the breakfast buffet etc - a good selection of fruit and maybe a salad for dinner on one day would be doable I suppose!

vintage52er · 12/08/2013 23:45

Macca welcome back. That's a really good example of someone who is in control - just 1lb gain is great news.

Itsaboatjack · 12/08/2013 23:49

postmanpat I just got back from Lanzarote, forget the hotel treadmills go running along the beach instead. We were in Playa Blanco and there was a promenade along the beach which was great for running, I even found an outside gym overlooking the beach and harbour.

vintage52er · 12/08/2013 23:52

It was BreadandWine who said "close down the kitchen". He's full of great tips and ideas Grin

MissStrawberry · 13/08/2013 07:14

Blush I forgot BreadandWine was a man when I .

Up far too early again. These early starts are killing me. It is the same as when the kids are at school but you get a break while they are there! I have had a total of 4 hours without any children in the 4.5 weeks they have been off and half of that was at home cooking a roast and doing the laundry.

I went a bit awry in the end yesterday and finished on 689 though was supposed to be a fast day. Do I have to do another or will 189 extra really not matter?

Too worked up atm to eat anyway as dreading what the day will bring. At least my cat was funny this morning..

JB30 · 13/08/2013 07:32

MissS I don't reckon the 689 matters too much, you'll find your way.
16:8 today following a 650 FD. I will have 1 milky coffee but then just black tea/water until lunchtime. Still surprised I don't want breakfast after an FD, tone honest, I can never think of anything nice enough to have! Good luck any Tuesday fasters

Lizzabadger · 13/08/2013 07:42

JB I spend half my FDs planning what to have for breakfast the next day (today's was to be a brie panini construction). It's always very disappointing to wake up not feeling like eating it.

MissStrawberry · 13/08/2013 08:14

JB30, tbh I did well to only go over by that much considering what I would normally do when I had had a stressful day Hmm.

I've already twisted my back this morning and feel like I have had no sleep so hoping my children will be angels today.

BetsyBell · 13/08/2013 08:15

missS 700cals is still a fast day, you don't need to do another one today! Obviously aim for less next time but don't stress about it.

Yesterday's fast was the easiest yet - I think it's because I was full up from 10 days of increasingly larger eating days.

I'm not weighing myself but I can feel my tummy is reduced and slightly less wibbly again. My personal measure seems to be how well I can feel my hip bones in different positions. I've got a few more fasts before I'll be back to how I was pre holiday but that's the beauty of this WOE - just by getting back to it I'll get back to normal without any undue effort.

Not breaking my fast till lunchtime, or maybe brunch. I rarely feel hungry in the mornings after a fast.

MissStrawberry · 13/08/2013 08:40

On Sunday I did a FD and was about 432 iirc so I think I will count yesterday. I am feeling peckish and will eat as about to take the kids out and try and lose one of them and I really want grated unmelted cheese on toast. Bread usually makes me feel tummy achey though Sad.

Bramblesinforrin · 13/08/2013 09:04

Hello fasters! Well a couple of months after reaching goal, I'm maintaining by fasting once a week - with the odd week off for holidays. :). Eating patterns have changed, which helps. Not sure what will happen when we hit roast dinner season, but I think all has changed for the better.

Hope y are all doing well.
