The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

mttum I always count chip shop chips as 1000 cals to be on the safe side. My TDEE is 2000 so I can still eat them without guilt so long as I adjust for them over the week.

Southeastdweller · 24/07/2013 19:53

I agree with you Lizza about BMI. I'm at an all time low (21) yet I'm still flabby though not as much as I was and suspect I've lost muscle doing four months of 5:2 and a couple of months of 4:3. So I'm finding the last post by Bssh very interesting indeed.

NotAsTired · 24/07/2013 20:00

Mummy, I seriously got that wrong Blush. Oops!

NotAsTired · 24/07/2013 20:01

Mummy? Blush. Mttum, I mean.

BsshBossh · 24/07/2013 20:05

Southeast yep, I don't want to go from fat fat to skinny fat, so for me it looks like going the bodybuilder route is the way to go - strip the fat but build the muscle and still keep BMI low. If they can do it, so can I. The female heavy lifters at my gym have fantastic, firm, slim bodies compared to the cardio bunnies (who are still flabby even though slim). I can see the evidence right before my eyes. I know what I have to do.

Southeastdweller · 24/07/2013 20:07

Thanks, that's exactly my aim now too Bssh.

Also do you mind telling me where you get mango powder from in London please?!

mttum · 24/07/2013 20:08

Thanks everyone, danger over! Remembered I had home made vege chilli in the freezer so had that with one of those microwave rice pouches. in real danger of going over TDEE due to snacks and also had a brief tussle with the gin bottle before putting it firmly back in the cupboard without indulging! Just about managed to come in about 120 cals under TDEE but it was close!

itsa, might sound daft but I am missing DD who is with her mum for the week. Still, only a few more days to go then we are off to my nieces wedding, which is one reason (among many) that I don't want to blow it.

Why is it when I am tired I want to stuff myself with crap and alcohol? Anyway, managed to avoid it so Thanks all.

HellesBelles396IsDeeplyUncool · 24/07/2013 20:10

Woo-hoo! Finally some progress. I weigh the same as last week, my waist is the same as last week BUT I have lost 1.5kg of body fat (according to the fancy scales at boots).

Which means I have put on 1.5kg of muscle which increases my metabolism Grin

Still a size 18 but I feel good that there has been a change.

Looking forward to FD tomorrow. Came in under calories today but only had 1 of my 5 a day (unless strawberry jam on an afternoon tea counts as one??).

mttum · 24/07/2013 20:11

No harm done notas Smile. Thanks for taking the time.

bssh, have taken on board your comments about compensating other days. Will probably go for the chips when DD back at the weekend, so plenty of time to do advance compensation Grin

HellesBelles396IsDeeplyUncool · 24/07/2013 20:15

mttum according to a sign in the chip shop I was in earlier (children's portion for me!) an average-sized portion is just under 600 calories. I put mine down as 850 as I had mushy peas, small bread roll (and hideous marge) and a scoop of sorbet (mango - yum!)

If you still go. Make sure you enjoy it :)

mttum · 24/07/2013 20:25

I will helles thanks, but at the weekend now Smile.

snackers watch secret eaters on now on 4seven. The woman eats 700 cals in snacks a day. I had over 800 today!

monster54 · 24/07/2013 20:39

Ok seems a lot of us pushing on with shred!!! Shall I start a separate thread to avoid clogging the main??

We can check in there!!

BsshBossh · 24/07/2013 20:53

Southeast mango or amchoor powder can be found in any Indian grocery shops eg in Tooting, Southall, Turnpike Lane, Wembley. You can also buy online eg the Asian Cookshop.

Southeastdweller · 24/07/2013 20:56

Many thanks Bssh and enjoy the rest of your hols Smile

BsshBossh · 24/07/2013 21:31

Betsy I'm working on a before and after set of photos now. Size 18/20 to size 10. Difficult because back then I dressed to cover up so it's difficult to see exactly how big I was but still.... Watch this space Grin.

BetsyBell · 24/07/2013 21:42

Oh goody Bssh! Grin I hope you'll be cataloguing your weight-training body transformations too.

OP posts:
BsshBossh · 24/07/2013 21:43

Oh yes, definitely the weight training progressions. No more covering up now.

EagleRiderDirk · 24/07/2013 21:47

Yay bssh I'm waiting with baited breath too as you started where I did and are where I want to be. I struggle with then and now at the mo too as I never thought I was that large in the mirror but looked awful in photos. My solution was to therefore avoid cameras as they were obviously the problem Wink

JB30 · 24/07/2013 22:07

Question for you folks - since starting this WOL and working hard on not snacking, I'm really conscious of my kids constantly asking for snacks. I work full time with one in school/part time childcare and the other in FT childcare. They snack a lot at childcare (lots of food treats too) and before now this wouldn't have bothered me but now I'm hyper sensitive to it. When they are at home with me and ask for snacks, I do a quick mental check as to when they last ate and generally say no, I feel mean Sad - am I wrong to do this? I don't think they are hungry, genuinely hungry but they think they are and I'm scared they think I'm starving them.
How do you all handle it? Do you do the 3 meals a day, 2-3 snacks?

BetsyBell · 24/07/2013 22:21

Kids are growing JB30 so I wouldn't worry too much though it's good to be mindful about it. I do find mine mean "I'm bored" when they say "I'm hungry"!

If you offer only healthy snacks/drink rather than treats or distract then with something else it might turn out they forget they're 'hungry'.

Today I totally used the excuse of the kids wanting to snack to join in myself Blush. Need to get some self control going there I think...

OP posts:
BetsyBell · 24/07/2013 22:25

Sorry - I misread, it's childcare giving out snacks/treats isn't it? Well, just keep being mindful with them at home and they'll change their expectations for the better when they're with you at least.

Talkinpeace · 24/07/2013 22:27

JB30
TBH I have my doubts about kids and snacks too.
A piece of fruit / some dried fruit / some veg / a glass of milk if needs be
rather than the high fat / salt / sugar that is sold as snack food
BUT
kids are growing : DS is 12, he has hollow legs, his capacity for chip shop chips is astounding and yet his ribs still show
whereas DD is 15 and is now starting to skip meals - so I make sure the remaining ones are healthy

Talkinpeace · 24/07/2013 22:28

PS the shred I've never done it and am not a DVD exercise person, I do yoga, bodybalance and swim loads
BUT
for those not (yet) into joining a gym, its a good way to get toned

I'd also strongly suggest trying things like wii fit
