The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

saf, I certainly wasn't cold yesterday.

LikeaHurricane · 03/08/2013 11:59

Still catching up after hols, nearly there. I haven't been cold this last couple of weeks since I got back and I am one who does get the chills on fd.
Just posted on that Aibu thread cos they were getting on my wick....
Will catch up properly with all of you soon.
Welcome all newcomers, keep it simple and don't over think it.

LikeaHurricane · 03/08/2013 12:05

Oh and having been inspired by all your pics, there's a photo of me on my hols in Tuscany on my profile.

MissStrawberry · 03/08/2013 12:10

I am feeling peckish but keeping on drinking water and keeping my dinner in mind Grin.

Made oat and sultana biscuits for the kids and have had no problem resisting them Shock.

swallowedAfly · 03/08/2013 12:31

is that the latest 'it'll make you annorexic' thread hurricane?

i may put up headless before and after photos of me if i can find.

JB30 · 03/08/2013 12:51

How do all, just finished reading through last day of posts, read the Aibu thread yesterday but scared to look today in case of where it's gone to now! I deliberately said v little to anyone about me adopting the woe, for some reason it seems to antagonise people, they just can't believe you can live like. Yes I can, very well thank you v much!
My mini fast yesterday wasn't that mini but 1400 cals for a Friday with a 40 jog to start the day, I'm happy with that. Did another jog this morning to the supermarket, 3 miles to it - and bought bacon & eggs! I have a night out tomorrow and I'm approaching it A list style for today and most of tomorrow. Looking forward to going out and dressing up! Lots of laughs and yummy meal planned.
Hungry now...omelette for lunch maybe? Hope everyone else is having a great day

MaisieMama · 03/08/2013 12:59

Hi all! So delighted to discover this thread - very helpful!

I've been doing 5:2 for 3 weeks now and I've GAINED almost 5lbs. No some of that might be muscle as for two of the weeks I was cycling a lot but it's incredibly depressing to be doing what you're supposed to and GAINING.

I have about 3 stone to lose and had thought/hoped as it was so much I'd notice a difference quite quickly.

Anyone have a similar experience?

Thanks!

MissStrawberry · 03/08/2013 13:45

Still just had water all day. Resisted the urge to lick the spoon with tuna, sweet corn and mayo on it and still not had a biscuit.

One question - when I have my dinner later how do I resist the urge to over eat since I have had nothing all day? I guess all in the eating slowly and realising when I no longer feel hungry?

swallowedAfly · 03/08/2013 14:01

water and black coffee here so far. having a bit of a struggle at the minute but i think that's because i'm not really doing anything today and was reading my book in the garden and felt that reflex to go and pour a nice long drink then remembered i'm fasting.

just need to get through the next few hours really. if i do eat or drink anything now i know i will become ravenous. will have another black coffee i think.

your question missstrawberry - i think it's pure discipline and reminding yourself it's one day and you can eat tomorrow. would love to have a magic answer but that's the challenge for me and why i delay eating as late as i can and start small with say a cup of marmite and boiling water, then wait, then a small meal etc. going to bed very early also helps Grin

TrucksAndDinosaurs · 03/08/2013 14:03

Just posted on AIBU thread.
It's quite interesting how vociferous people are about defending the need to eat whenever they feel the urge.

swallowedAfly · 03/08/2013 14:12

and how sure they are that they'd die if they had to delay a meal for a few hours.

LikeaHurricane · 03/08/2013 14:13

Hi Saf, yes it is that thread.
JB 30, to be fair it's not so bad on there but I just felt the need to give my opinion. Grin
It's my 7 month anniversary this very day, started on 3rd December last year. I've lost a stone and 1 lb, starting at 9 st 12 and have lost four inches off my waistSmile
Im 5'6 and 46 years old. I have exercised 6 days a week for years having run numerous half marathons and two full marathons. Nothing has ever made a difference to me like thIs woe has. I am losing pure fat.
My adult acne [which were boils actually, no skin specialist could explain why I was getting them] has gone and I now have glowing skin.
It's all been fairly painless tbh. I think my skin improvement proves that this woe is very good for your health.

MissStrawberry · 03/08/2013 14:29

Is the idea to eat as late as possible? I am making tea for the children for 5pm but DH and I usually eat around 7pm and if we do eat at 5 will end up eating again (though I expect not genuinely through hunger.)

LikeaHurricane · 03/08/2013 14:37

God I'm thick, it's actually my 8 month anniversary today!

strawberry that works best for me and a lot of other people and 7 pm sounds like a good time Smile

EagleRiderDirk · 03/08/2013 14:37

miss personally I just eat at my normal dinner time. Though if you are worried that you may eat again then it may be best to push back.

mayaswell · 03/08/2013 14:48

missstrawberry there's a recipe on the BBC Good Food website for cheese and bacon lasagne which says it has 425 calories per serving on a recipe that serves 6. So you can have 75 cals of veg!

MissStrawberry · 03/08/2013 14:53

Yay for my 75g of veg!! I think that would be quite a lot. Thanks for looking!

mayaswell · 03/08/2013 16:16

75 cals of veg! Not 75g!

MissStrawberry · 03/08/2013 16:41

My head knew you meant calories. My fingers were confused Grin.

I am soooooooooooooooooo hungry.

swallowedAfly · 03/08/2013 16:59

nearly 5pm. phew! think i'll try and hold out on having my marmite drink till 6 if i can make it. feels harder when you haven't done it in a while. think my last proper fast was at the end of june before i went on holiday and that was hard too as i'd had a break because of surgery and recovering. though the good news is that it has been easy to maintain in that time without any particular effort.

scales better look good tomorrow because i'm struggling!

feggyart · 03/08/2013 17:05

Starting this on Monday. Have got just over 8 stone to lose. Have been healthy eating and swimming for three weeks and lost 10 pounds. GP recommended 5 2 so I will give it a go. Hello everybody.

Talkinpeace · 03/08/2013 17:16

maisie
welcome. if you have three stone to lose and are gaining on 5:2 I am going to leap to the assumption that you are overeating on your other days.
do a bit of number crunching - work out your TDEE and then log your food on MFP for a bit (not "counting" so much as recording)

Talkinpeace · 03/08/2013 17:17

feggy
Welcome. very interesting that a GP suggested this to you.
and well done on starting the exercise early - it means that the butterfly that will emerge when you get to where you want to be will be toned.

mayaswell · 03/08/2013 17:22

Hello feggyart you've done well already, you must be pleased! Good luck with 5:2!

feggyart · 03/08/2013 17:26

Thankyou. Yes the gp was very positive in her recommendation. I have a back injury which is worse due to excess weight. It's really important I ditch the pounds.
