The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

gilbetus lots of people on here would kill for a 6lb loss in a month! I've lost about 12lbs in 3 months, but I'm the lowest weight I've been for 5 years and because I'm loosing slowly i know I'm more likely to keep it off, and it gives my skin a chance to shrink down instead of being left with flaps :) I'd say if 11 stone is your sticking point, keep going and see how far you get. There's nothing to loose but the weight, as you still get to enjoy all the yummy food & drink life has to offer! Good luck :)

swallowedAfly · 02/08/2013 14:01

i'm an idiot! i'm going out to dinner with a friend tonight who is having a very rare evening off from her children. clearly not a fast day then! might as well start on the delicatessen in my fridge.

PandaPops76 · 02/08/2013 14:05

Hi all
FD for me today - my third this week as have friends staying at the weekend, so there will probably be pudding happening at some point. No breakfast again, which definitely makes it easier as really only started noticing feeling a bit hungry at about 1.00, whereas on days where I have breakfast I'm starving again by about 10.30 am! Also happy to find out that, despite me fasting and breastfeeding, DS is gaining weight really well - he weighs 17lbs and is only 16 weeks - so it's clearly not reducing my milk supply! Hope all other fasters are feeling OK today...

swallowedAfly · 02/08/2013 14:05

omg! fresh bread, camembert and chorizo. i am in heaven! can't believe i forgot i was out for dinner tonight so couldn't fast but i'm really glad i remembered Grin

Talkinpeace · 02/08/2013 14:18

Tut tut saf knowing that you are having one blow out meal is NOT the excuse for another one. Thin people eat LESS before going out for a meal ....
then again that DOES sound delicious.

I'm still full of Mezze from last night : doing my classes today with a full digestive tract was really hard!

thaliablogs · 02/08/2013 14:32

panda I am clearly a freak, wish I was like you. I am often, but not always, not hungry first thing (ds wakes up around 6) but am always ravenous by 9am and by 1300 I feel like I might die if I don't eat something! I then continue to be hungry all afternoon. I am just an extra hungry person I guess. And thirsty, too.

Fasting today, decided it was worth one last go before hols. Saw 12st2 earlier this week and thought I might get down to 12st before we went away, but was back up to 12st 4 this morning so it was not to be. Had to take a fruity fibre last night though as things had not got moving post my last fast day on tuesday, so that might be contributing.

Very busy running around getting sorted for hols and move, including getting ds's pre-school booster done, and taking him for an eye test - poor lad needs glasses. Although the optician just made him feel very special so he thinks it's a huge privilege. Clever woman!

swallowedAfly · 02/08/2013 14:38

it was just three slices of baguette, a little chunk of cheese and a few slices of chorizo. not a huge blow out but yes TIP - insane illogic going on with me today Wink

Talkinpeace · 02/08/2013 14:42

Thalia Have a great holiday and enjoy not fasting, but do take the opportunity to watch how thin people eat in restaurants - you'll be surprised how much they leave on their plates and what menu combinations they choose.

thaliablogs · 02/08/2013 14:55

tip indeed. We'll actually be eating at home most of the time as we're renting a villa. I will be on holiday for part of the time with my absolutely gorgeous and lovely size 8 blonde sister in law and am well aware of how she and my brother eat as we stay with them a lot. They don't tend to leave much on their plate, and spend a lot of time cooking at home, making very well planned meals with very little leftovers. The big difference is not that they leave loads etc., but that they don't eat if they aren't hungry, and do eat (often more than me) if they are. They also, as you say, are very good at stopping eating something when they are full, even if it is totally delicious. I find that really hard!

We have done the same holiday 3 years in a row and I enjoy the fact that since I can do so much more exercise on holiday (I go for a run and do some weights every other day, and swim a kilometer every day, doing some splits as I do) I can be quite relaxed about what I eat and come back usually at the same weight but more trim around the waist. I usually have yogurt etc for breakfast, salad and cheese/cold meat at lunchtime, and eat a pretty luxurious dinner, but this year I may skip some breakfasts and keep a few of the lunches really minimal to make sure I don't slip back from what I have started here.

Anyway will be interesting to see what happens this year!

MrsFlorrick · 02/08/2013 14:56

Afternoon. I was directed here by Talkinpeace.

I am interested in 16/8 fasting.

I have low carbed since beginning of this year. Not lost much just 7lbs in total.

I still have 15 to 20lbs to lose and I was wondering whether IF would help with that??

I looked at 5:2 but I just can't do it. I have never made it beyond noon before blowing the 500cal limit.

However I know I can do 16/8 or even 18/6 no problem.

I have tried it for the last 3 days and its easy. My "window" is 10am to 6pm although this morning it was 11am onwards.

I wanted to know whether 16/8 actually works and what results you have had with it? Thanks

wine0 · 02/08/2013 14:57

My thin friend makes really good food choices loads like when we all go out for Indians, she always opts for a sizzler with a tomato based sauce and always boiled rice. No chips or pilau rice or naan for her.

I'm at 3pm and I'm beginning to feel the hunger now.

Tea time is going to be tough making DH and DC tea and not having any.

NotAsTired · 02/08/2013 16:14

Hey everyone, I'm back. I think last time I was on here was on Saturday, waiting to go for my blow out meal! We then decided to go visit DP's parents, all very last minute and stayed till today. Lovely time etc. Pudding every eve plus lots of other not very healthy eating. Lots of walks though and a couple of sessions of shred too.

But I am always happy to be back to my usual food. Anyway, I was starving while I was there, I mean wake up in the night tummy rumbling stuff. I couldn't work out if it was because I had PMS or because of all the sugar or both. On the plus side, I am usually whacked around TOTM and although I am feeling tired, I don't seem to be completely depleted of energy like I am usually am.

On a very positive note, lots of compliments from people recently about how well I am looking. And also, my DP said that I was inspirational with how dedicated I am and how I am dealing with the fast Grin.

On side effects, I have found that my skin is better, my hair is shinier, my cycles are shorter, I sleep better. One major thing is that I cannot eat till I am full till bursting anymore - I actually want to throw up or have thrown up Blush because my eyes are definitely bigger than my stomach and it takes much less to feel full. Lessons learnt.

I have also found that I need to stick to 5:2 or 4:3 and not do any 16:8 because it makes me a bit obsessive, which I have never been before and I don't want to go down that route. But at least I have recognised it fairly early on. It may be a maintenance strategy I can try but not yet.

NotAsTired · 02/08/2013 16:56

Sorry for all the me, me, me. Smile

NotAsTired · 02/08/2013 17:01

Talking about thin people and eating habits. I knew a woman who used to, for example, at a buffet, fill her plate up with everything, into a huge pile and then sample a bite or two of each type of food and then leave the rest.

Talkinpeace · 02/08/2013 17:02

welcome MrsFlorrick your best bet is probably to skim read the whole thread as various people do different permutations and have different starting points ....

notastired
you know you better than you know any of us Wink

NotAsTired · 02/08/2013 17:03

Can't stop posting Grin. It's like I had the postal withdrawal symptoms - am officially an addict

cosmicgirl99 · 02/08/2013 17:19

Hi another newbie here. Been lurking a while and following a very indulgent holiday, decided I really can't put off losing this "baby" weight any more. (been a bit too long for that excuse) I'm 5' 6" and currently 11st 2lb, initial target is 10st which was my pre-pregnancy weight but a few pounds less than that would be my ideal weight. I did my first fast day on Wednesday and it wasn't bad at all. Thanks already for all the tips I've gleaned from this board. I'm hoping this might be a way of eating that fits better with my lifestyle!

swallowedAfly · 02/08/2013 17:32

that sounds like me at a buffet but i was always told it was rude and a waste a food so try to restrain myself Grin

i have decided that i will remedy lunch by just choosing a caeser salad or such for my dinner out. not exactly low cal but better than stodge and chips.

wrigglebum · 02/08/2013 18:17

cosmic, you sound like my weight twin! I got to about 11lb3 in march then decided to quit coca cola and dr pepper. Was down to about 10st9 by mid June doing that, then started 5:2 in early July and I'm now 10st3.2. I'll keep doing this for a few months along with shred and see how I'm doing. Then see if I can maintain on 6:1 and throw in a few extra fasts or 16:8s if I need when I'm happy with where I am.

wrigglebum · 02/08/2013 18:18

Oh, and I'm 5ft6 too.

Lizzabadger · 02/08/2013 18:35

That's interesting ERD. I'm glad it's helped with your pernicious anaemia. Congratulations on the amazing weight loss too.

MissStrawberry · 02/08/2013 18:49

Hello

Just posted on the other thread but not sure where I should be.

Just did the TDEE doo-dah and it has given me BMR 1519 and TDEE 1823. Need to go back and read now to see what it means!

Talkinpeace · 02/08/2013 18:51

Welcome MissStrawberry
Basically if you eat 500 calories on your two fast days and 1823 on the other five days you will lose weight slowly and steadily at around 1lb a week
If you up your exercise or eat a teeny bit less on a couple of days a week you'll lose quicker

NoTeaForMe · 02/08/2013 18:52

Hi, I was directed here by TalkinPeace I'm thinking of starting this, but I'm breastfeeding my 10 week old. Is it ok to do or should it be avoided? Do I need to consider anything extra?

Thanks

Talkinpeace · 02/08/2013 18:53

saf
in case you are not already out on the town : a really fun thing to do at a girlie supper is to have a couple of starters each as a main course - turns the meal into tapas / mezze and often lower calories than normal main courses
