The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Hmm, not great here this morning. I've been hovering around 10st 7lbs (give or take a 3lb bounce each week!) for about 4-5 weeks now. Yesterday I was at zumba class and definitely looked a bit bigger in the full length mirrors than I had been and this morning, after FD yesterday, I am indeed 10st 8lbs.
I've probably been over indulging on NFDs to be honest, particularly with the alcohol the last 2-3 weekends (not normally much of a drinker) so I guess I know, in my heart, what's gone wrong but it's a bit disheartening.
Today me and the kids are making lovely Rocky Road so that'll be today's treat (for pudding tip, not as a snack Smile ) but it is definitely harder in the hols and I'm just pottering about with the kids more as I reduce my work hours.
Just a bit of a whinge this morning really, sorry folks!

Dotty342kids · 30/07/2013 08:03

And that's brilliant re. waist to height ratio ERD, well done Grin

postmanpatscat · 30/07/2013 08:04

dotty hang on in there - you know what's broke, so you can fix it!

BsshBossh · 30/07/2013 08:15

trucks that's a great loss! Do you follow a primal diet then?

always my flabby tummy is the last to shrink, but it has always been the fattest part of my body.

Melanie how sweet of your DH, and those kievs sound lovely - I'll look out for them this week.

postman how much lower in weight do you think you'll go?

Natural I wouldn't personally drop carbs. You may drop the lbs but it might not be sustainable and when you return to eating more carbs the weightloss might slow down more or you might even gain and you'll be disheartened. Slow and steady wins the game (in my experience). Just be patient.

ERD hurrah!

Dotty whinge away :) At least you know why you're not losing. Two things - either bite the bullet and reduce alcohol drastically or just accept the summer holidays are going to be more relaxed and get back to strict fasting when term starts.

Dotty342kids · 30/07/2013 08:44

Fortunately our weekend socialising slows down a bit from here so hopefully can cut the alcohol out again. Think I may try some 16:8 on my NFDs actually, see how that goes. Do most of you that do that do it between 12-8 - those kinds of hours?

PeasandCucumbers · 30/07/2013 08:49

Had my first fast day yesterday which went well but I have a question, how do people deal with big events? I have a wedding next Fri and normally I would just think sod it for one day but as I am only at the start of this I don't want to derail myself so quickly. Do you think if I was a tiny bit careful (I'm not going to beat myself up about eating some cake) and then fast the next day that it would sort of balance out?

TIA for advice

HairyPotter · 30/07/2013 09:04

Bit downhearted today. Weighed myself and again, no loss. Sad I'm still at 13'4. Started 3 weeks ago at 13'8 and lost 3lb in first week then 1lb the following week and since then, nothing.

I'm hoping its just down the the shred and perhaps c25k building muscle, but god, I'm hacked off.

I need to focus on my shape changing I suppose. I have dug out a pair of too tight 14's and will try them on every week and try for a nsv.

Sorry for moaning but better to whine here than sabotage my diet.

Good luck to everyone fasting today. Incidentally, after logging my exercise cals yesterday, I was on 48 cals for the day. (494 food, 446 exercise) could that have anything to do with it?

frenchfancy · 30/07/2013 09:14

peas Go to the wedding and enjoy yourself. Fast the day before rather than the day after, in my experience fasting the day after a social event is not wise. My hangovers need feeding. Added to that if you fast the day before you are likely to fit into your clothes better.

EagleRiderDirk · 30/07/2013 09:33

dotty we all deserve some blow outs occasionally - that's my theory.

peas I agree with French, fast the day before and just enjoy the wedding.

swallowedAfly · 30/07/2013 09:36

morning all. back to 10.1.4 today after having a couldn't stop eating day yesterday but figure i needed after losing my appetite for a while.

i really need to schedule in a proper fast day but am finding it hard with school holidays and having a bit more of a social life recently.

MelanieCheeks · 30/07/2013 09:41

peas that's one of the lovely things about this approach - you can fit in events and socail occasions round your fast days. In fact, the odd "spike" day can be helpful in convincing your body that food is not in short supply.

saf your body is in recovery mode i reckon. Give it time.

Talkinpeace · 30/07/2013 09:57

Fasting beforehand
Yup, that is the secret ..... its what the stars do .... they hardly eat at all the week before things like Oscars night so that they look good in those tiny dresses
and then stuff their faces in the evening after ....

postmanpatscat · 30/07/2013 10:06

Bssh happy to drop a couple more pounds so I can go to Lanzarote on 11 Aug and put 7lbs back on with a clear conscience! I don't drink, but there will be desserts every night :)

swallowedAfly · 30/07/2013 10:12

it's all good melanie. it'll sort.

another of the good things about this woe i've found, and the support on this thread, is that it has sort of changed my expectations and feelings about weight loss/weight control. i started doing this in february and have 'only' lost 2 and a bit stone. thing is if i had poofed from 12st to 9.5stone in a matter of weeks it would have been no good for me at really and totally unsustainable.

doing it slow and steady like this has meant i actually feel like i 'own' this body and weight itms and that i can control it. i've acclimatised each step along the way and learnt how to relax about the whole thing without that equating to losing control.

i am waffling a bit sorry Grin you know when you start out with something clear to say but by the time you go deal with the child screeching for something they can't reach, feed the dogs you'd forgotten haven't had breakfast yet and get distracted by the state of the loo so clean it before coming and continuing with your point on a post? well one of those moments Smile

Dotty342kids · 30/07/2013 10:37

saf I think the entire school holidays are made up of those moments Grin

swallowedAfly · 30/07/2013 10:39

i know! i need to go back to work for a break dotty Grin

frenchfancy · 30/07/2013 11:01

hairy if you are doing C25K and shred then I'm not surprised the weight loss has slowed. Mine did for the first 4 weeks of that, then suddenly started falling off. Concentrate on your body shape, particularly waist measurement and enjoy the feeling of extra energy that I'm sure you have got.

MaccaPaccaismyNemesis · 30/07/2013 11:10

Had a mini scale victory this week as weighed myself and have dropped below 90kg for the first time in 2 years! Am comfortably in size 16 jeans Grin. Fast day today which is being helped by having a tooth extracted this morning.

Dotty342kids · 30/07/2013 11:14

ooh, well done Macca, you'll be heading into the size 14s soon Smile

swallowedAfly · 30/07/2013 11:17

talking of size 14's whilst sorting the clothes mountain i've just found a pair of next size 14R work trousers that i must have worn once but now fall down.

if anyone needs interim size work trousers let me know.

BetsyBell · 30/07/2013 11:34

Saf It's nice to have you bimbling around the board again! (I mean that in the nicest possible way Grin)

Just had a thought, where's akarucker? Not seen her round here for a while...

Hairy - I second what frenchfancy said - keep up the amazing work and you'll see some dramatic results within a few weeks, promise!

Right, holiday packing beckons...

OP posts:
Talkinpeace · 30/07/2013 11:36

Hmmmm .... the 5:2 clothes swap beckons !

But ladies (and gents) , be SO SO SO proud of yourselves that those 'back of the cupboard' clothes are coming forward.
And - remember to get rid of all but one set of clothes that are too big (everybody needs a slouch / memo set)

Charity shops are your friend : I pay up to £5 for jeans and £4 for tops ....
That way you can buy a couple of every size till you get to where you want to be

BsshBossh · 30/07/2013 11:45

Dotty when I do 16:8 I so it between the hours of 2-10pm because we eat dinner late in our house (DH comes home after DD's bedtime so I eat with him). I go to bed with full-ish stomach but it doesn't affect my sleeping negatively at all (or my weightloss!).

HairyPotter · 30/07/2013 11:48

Thanks French and Betsy that helps. I know I need to keep going, but it really is disappointing.

Still, I'm only 3 weeks into it. Will concentrate on getting into my size 14's comfortably.

BsshBossh · 30/07/2013 11:57

saf I'm doing 24/7 childcare through the holidays so I've booked child into a few week-long activities for my sanity that she likes Grin.
