The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Great FD for me!! Nothing but water all day, shred, chicken breast and salad.

Feeling sooooo good. I found shred killed off my appetite a bit which was great.

Hope everyone else has had a good day! Hoping I don't ache too much from the shred in the morning!!!

BsshBossh · 29/07/2013 20:49

Just broken my fast with some juicy red grapes. DH has chicken noodle broth simmering away.

Did a 20 minute HIIT session today at the gym (after 4 weeks of negligible exercise) and I am aching all over! Alternated powerwalking/jogging with all out sprinting - works my heart and body much more than 45 minute steady-state running ever did. But DD loved the kid's club at the gym so much she wants to go again tomorrow so I will do upper body weights, a bit of powerwalking and a lot of stretching. I love the exercise high though, so am really looking forward to going.

And it's a NFD tomorrow so I'll treat DD and myself to something nice to eat afterwards.

Londonmrss · 29/07/2013 21:20

what is nsv?

alwaysanauntie · 29/07/2013 21:29

Well done all you fasters! (personally find it too hard to face a fast on a Monday usually, have to work my way back down calorie-wise from the weekend Grin).

Dotty I take it there were only 2 bits of choc in the fridge?! That's a serious NSV I'd say, am in awe of your restraint [bowing emoticon]

Saf well done on getting under 10, all physical activity is exercise in my book, even hoovering, though clearly that's not nearly as much fun! Have you been to the clinic yet? I found a lump a couple of weeks ago and have my appointment a week Wednesday, think it's just a cyst but want to make sure. Just hoping I don't have to wait as long for mammogram and ultrasound as I did for my last scan when pg (2 1/2 hours after appointment time!). Hope it all goes well for you xx

Hit a new weekly low today of 66.5 kilos (although did see 65.6 briefly last week) so happy with that. Am trying to compensate for eating junk by eating less generally. Next challenge will be stopping eating junk and eating healthy food instead. Have successfully cut out weekday boozing though, so one step at a time! Bring on tomorrow's FD (and not the rain as I'm weirdly looking forward to circuit training Grin)

alwaysanauntie · 29/07/2013 21:30

London NSV = non scale victory. ie: anything positive about new woe that's not relating to your weight dropping on the scales

Londonmrss · 29/07/2013 21:39

I see! Thank you!

HairyPotter · 29/07/2013 21:53

FD almost over. Felt hungrier than usual but managed to not snack. Did shred this morning and C25k after dinner.

Really hoping to see movement on the scales tomorrow. I weighed myself after Thursdays fast and I stayed the same and that took 4 goes Blush I had to keep moving the scales up and down the bathroom.

Good luck to tomorrow's fasters.

Lizzabadger · 29/07/2013 22:08

FD done. Good to feel empty again after weekend excesses. Well done all Monday fasters.

wrigglebum · 29/07/2013 22:31

In awe of those who manage to exercise on fast days. I'm guessing as my body gets more used to exercise and fasting I should be able to manage it a bit better. I'm always pretty active, running around after the boys and housework but I hadn't done any weights workouts for about five years before last night.

Talkinpeace · 29/07/2013 22:36

wriggle
give it a go - if nothing else, working out while fasting seems to rip through the visceral fat PDQ

wrigglebum · 29/07/2013 22:57

Tip- I think when I do it'll need to be early on. I'd planned to shred this evening (don't get any time in the day with two boys at home and a lounge covered in dinosaurs and Lego), but was wiped by then. Planning to try on Thursday when the bigger one is at nursery and the younger one is having a nap. Will be a lot easier to start doing it when the big one goes to school.

BsshBossh · 29/07/2013 23:04

wriggle I started 5:2 and exercising on the same day. I had no concrete idea how fasting would make me feel so I went to the gym on my first ever FD (which ended up being a 24 hour one!) and it was perfectly fine. I generally exercise 5 days a week, never on the weekends, so inevitably two of those exercise days fall on FDs. I actually exercise better in a fasted state due to feeling light and empty but admittedly I don't do longer than 45 minutes a time. I suspect I'd feel different if I exercised later on in the day and for a much longer duration.

BsshBossh · 29/07/2013 23:07

wriggle cross-posted. Yes, try morning. I find exercising first thing (for me this is actually around 9.30 after school drop off but sometimes around 7.30am) easier in fasted state c.f. later in the day when more tired. But I am interested to read Leangains/16:8 protocol which advises to exercise after 16 hours fast just before breakng fast (for me this would be around 1/2pm).

headintheclouds · 29/07/2013 23:54

wriggle historically Ive always been a bit sporadic with exercise.. started 5:2 in Jan and my weight loss has been very slow...then a month ago I upped the exercise from an embarrassing once aweek to 2/3 times weekly
doing the exercise on a fast day. Ive felt fine ( even a bit euphoric ) and the weight loss has been more consistant. i.e. a loss every week instead of lose/ maintain/ maintain/ lose cycle that I seemed to be in!Now 17 lbs lighter and 6 lbs to go before I re- assess my original target!
FD today and did my usual 24 hr fast with one nice evening meal..today was coriander and lime chicken with a pile of roasted peppers and broccoli .dotty well done on the chocolate front! i have the same problem with cheese!Grin

TrucksAndDinosaurs · 30/07/2013 03:49

NSV: all size 14 trousers in charity bag.

Back in size 12. At the start of June I was cruising for 16 and was a tight 14 bulging over the waistbands.

Waist size shrunk. Wish I'd measured now.
Reading Mark's Daily Apple success stories....so inspiring. Love that site.

alwaysanauntie · 30/07/2013 06:38

trucks that's amazing, and in 2 months. Well done you!

Although I'm loosing fairly steadily the weight around my waist is taking its time. It was the first place i started putting it on so i guess it makes sense it's the last to come off. Still 1 inch down & 2 to go before i hit the magic height ratio of 50% :)

mttum · 30/07/2013 06:49

Another fast day over. What happened there? No food at all, no hunger pangs or even head hunger. Hmmm, maybe something to do with the total pig out on Sunday?

Hoping to do official WI for the first time in a month on Friday. Tbh there have been a few unofficial ones along the way though so I know there will be a change Smile.

On exercise, I've always exercised on FDs with no problems, but definitely agree its easier (for me at least) if I do it earlier in the day. By evening I'm usually pretty tired and it takes an extra effort.

mttum · 30/07/2013 06:54

always, you are getting there, well done. ATM my priority is waist measurement, and mine is also moving slowly, but it is moving.

Disappointingly, I checked my height the other day, and discovered I am an inch shorter than I thought I was! That means another half inch to come off the waist before its a healthy ratio Sad

Lizzabadger · 30/07/2013 07:07

Trucks I started at nearly size 16 and want to fit into a 12 in 2 minths too. You are giving me hope.

I do an intense workout class on the evening of one of my fast days. It's fine and I am one of the few people there who doesn't feel nauseous.

postmanpatscat · 30/07/2013 07:11

hooray trucks :)

wriggle I've always exercised on fast days if I want to...10k runs etc. If there are no carbs to burn, your body turns to your fat stores instead, I believe. I read Women's Running mag and a recent article said 'don't allow yourself to get hungry' and I thought 'Why the hell not, it won't kill you?!' but then I'm not training for a race or anything.

I fasted yesterday, first one in about 3 weeks (and second in about 6 weeks!) and hadn't really thought about tentative plans to meet a friend in the evening. We ended up in Pizza Express where I had the superfood salad and a mini lemon meringue dessert, total less than 500 cals :) The salad was lovely too. 600g down this morning, which has got rid of the effects of my indulgent weekend.

mttum fingers crossed for your weigh in - shame you're shrinking though!

MelanieCheeks · 30/07/2013 07:13

londonmrss the common acronyms are explained in the opening post up at the top.

I managed zumba last night - maybe 95% of the energy I'd have on a NFD but still fine. And when i came home, DH had prepared the new Sainsburys Love Veg range mini kievs - they were absolutely gorgeous! 116 cals each, I'd planned to have 2 but they were so good I had another 1/2. I think he's quite pleased we can find food that HE is happy to eat too. We just had salads along with it - laIbs lettuce, tomato and cucumber for me, coleslaw and a pasta salad for him.

EagleRiderDirk · 30/07/2013 07:31

trucks nice one. wanna send the 14s round this way? Wink

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 30/07/2013 07:32

Morning. After a fab start to WOE , this week I have stayed the same. Bit disheartening. At this rate it will take about a year to lose everything I need to. I suffer from arthritis in my knees so I think The Shred would be a no go for me.

Anyone else finding it harder in school holidays, the fast was ok, just finding times in week to fit them in?
To drop a few more pounds for holiday, could I drop the carbs on nfd's or would that be a bad idea?

JB30 · 30/07/2013 07:50

Successfully completed first FD of week. Not overly hungry so I'm going to go for a 16:8 with the aid of a nice skinny flat white in a couple of hours I reckon. Despite my talk of staying away from scales, it draws me to it like metal shavings to a magnet. Original nsv trousers are on but a bit bitey, another reason for the 16:8, until their fresh washed feeling breaks down a bit, I don't think the button will hang in there! Tomorrow is official day to assess true damage of hols, it's not as bad as previously thought but it's grim enough. Ah well, just got to deal with it. Have a good day all, good luck to any Tuesday fasters

EagleRiderDirk · 30/07/2013 07:50

3 good days and one fast down since my wobble. 1/2lbb off. that's good. but...

another 1/2inch off my waist. I am now below 50% waist to height ratio. Grin Grin
