The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

All our previous threads can be found by browsing through our very own fasting section of the site.

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Wow at pics! Wow wow!
Just done shred for first time on fast day and it was great, now off for swim, might have early lunch of scrambled eggs at 11.30 (am six hrs behind UK) then soup for supper.

Thanks so much for advice on eating up to TDEE. Think I'm in ketosis most of the time now which is why I'm not hungry so much. Drinking heaps of water but I always do as live in tropics.

TrucksAndDinosaurs · 25/07/2013 16:28

Should say, been doing shred for a bit but not exercised on fast days before.

BsshBossh · 25/07/2013 16:42

Thanks for the lovely comments everyone Thanks. 15 lbs to go then I will start that bulk/cut cycle I chatted about upthread to start building muscle and stripping fat further. I'm aiming to get to goal by November or December then 2014 will be all about recomposing my physique :) .

Londonmrss · 25/07/2013 17:03

can sometime talk to me about artificial sweeteners and diet drinks? they're bad right?

Dotty342kids · 25/07/2013 17:13

Had the mother of all temptations this afternoon when I took the kids to see a film at a local theatre. I was going to stay in cafe and drink / read book whilst they watched it, forgetting just how amazingly tempting the cakes there are. Anyway, I removed myself to the outside seating, turned my back on the cake counter and had a diet coke Smile. Almost killed me but am safely home now and will indulge in some homemade lemon drizzle cake tomorrow instead!

Talkinpeace · 25/07/2013 17:32

Before and after photos : Please look at EAgleRiderDirk as hers are pretty darned good too.

Londonmrss
Artificial sweeteners have always been a bugbear of mine : and the science is on my side.
They lie to your body.
They tell it that something sugary is about to be hitting the bloodstream so the enzymes get ready to digest / store it.
When it doesn't the body goes into a weird standby
so that when sugar DOES arrive, it leaps on it and hugs it away to round your waist
OK thats a bit simplistic
BUT sweeteners are lying to your system. THats not good for it.

EagleRiderDirk · 25/07/2013 17:49

Thanks tip - that's perked me up no end.

They're the best I could do as there's no before full body shot where I wasn't pregnant - because cameras are evil of course Wink

EagleRiderDirk · 25/07/2013 17:52

It turns out I can't do a blow out if I try. As much as I have always loved Chilli beef I can't bring myself to eat a portion and seem to really fancy a thai soup as a starter. Oh well, its going to feel like a blow out and that's what matters!

BsshBossh · 25/07/2013 17:52

Yes, I found Eagle's before and after photos very motivating. More please ERD!

vieenrose · 25/07/2013 18:22

Hello everyone
I'm back from a long weekend and haven't had time to check all your messages, will do that later.
NSV for me during said weekend. I spent it at the seaside and for the first time in ages, I wasn't ashamed of my body and I was wearing a bikini. Of course, my tummy is a bit frumpy but my abs show through the lose skin and I don't care. I used to dread going to the beach, I hid myself in the water as quickly as possible and afterwards used to cover up asap.
This woe has truly changed my life. I feel much better about myself and as a result, my relationship with DP has greatly improved.
Good luck to all the fasters

Dotty342kids · 25/07/2013 18:27

vieenrose that's just like me, I did the same too! I still have lots of "squodge" but considerably less than I used to have, and that's what matters until we get rid of some more Grin

vieenrose · 25/07/2013 19:22

dotty big grin to you too (I confess I can't seem to find the way to insert smiley)

Have just caught up a bit with the thread and bsshbossh, those photos are mightily impressive. Well done!

vieenrose · 25/07/2013 19:29

just been further upthread and Betsy you look amazing too

postmanpatscat · 25/07/2013 19:50

Since there seems to be a surge of photos lately, I decided to join you! It's sideways, sorry, but I'm on my phone in a caravan in sunny Bognor and my technical skills are limited as a result.

Well done to today's fasters :)

BsshBossh · 25/07/2013 19:58

postman you look fantastic! Can't wait to see a before pic too...

HellesBelles396IsDeeplyUncool · 25/07/2013 20:01

NSV - my waist is down to 39" - a loss of 1.5" this week (though I lost nothing in the first two weeks). 1 more inch will move me down a category for waist to height ratio which is very pleasing.

Dotty342kids · 25/07/2013 20:21

can't click on your username postmanpatcat........ not sure why!

smellylittleorange · 25/07/2013 20:54
