IF, 4:3, 5:2 - Maintaining a healthy weight - Chapter 3

Talkinpeace · 19/07/2013 13:03

This thread is for those who have been practicing IF (Intermittent Fasting) for quite a while and are now at, or nearing, their target healthy weight.
It's also for anyone who is doing it for the health benefits alone.

How do we experience fasts and balance a stable food intake while having little or no weight to lose?
How do we ensure that this WOL keeps us at the healthy weight long term rather than revert to yoyo games?
How do we ensure that we keep ourselves looking great rather than just thin?

Many of us have been maintaining at our original goal weight for a few months, and others are joining all the time.
Obviously, the more the merrier!
It is also worth considering whether a second, leaner target might be achievable.

You'll find the first two maintenance threads and all the main 5:2 threads for posters practicing IF to lose weight here on the Fasting / 5:2 on the diet forum. We're currently on thread no. 23, but there is a new main thread every 2-3 weeks.

There are two other associated threads:
This one, which is an absolute goldmine of Tips and Links on how to practice IF, and the research behind it.

And here is a treasure trove of 5:2 recipes, mostly low calorie for fasting days, but there are also recipes for when you want to treat yourself. And, now we're maintaining, we'll need more of these!

PS thanks to Breadandwine (proof that this forum welcomes everybody, not just Mums) for setting up the last thread while my old name that set up the first one was on 'holiday' Grin

and ATB congratulations on signing up for the SF to LA trek again. And good luck on the FD, I'm sure tea and coffee will get you through to dinner tonight....and remember how great you'll feel tomorrow morning.......and on the plane en route to Hawaii with a clean conscious

TheCyclistist · 17/10/2013 15:13

Sorry, didn't see your last post ATB.

Trouble is I'm on 1 tube journey away from Holloway Rd Sad....where's the kettle

AmericasTorturedBrow · 17/10/2013 15:34

Oh my god you must go! It's actually more tufnell park, pretty much equidistant between archway and holloway - crystals kebab shop, on the right hand side if you're walking from holloway to archway, more or less opposite mercers road

My teenage puppy fat took a long time to come off thanks to that place!

Laska42 · 17/10/2013 18:07

ATB There is a possible explanation re: doners and mayo .....(Whispers) I think Cyclistist hails from Essex!

(Laska sits back waiting for flames and cries of 'snob'!) Grin

Actually just to point out that I'm not a snob cos I like cheese and salad cream sarnies (preferably with crisps in) Shock .. though of course these days I'd only eat them on brown Grin

Laska42 · 17/10/2013 18:17

Yay! my son has a job... and he's done great , well done him! .

Thanks everyone,(see I'm feeling less emotional about it today) , people have been much more positive today (perhaps they didn't believe me first time!!!)

I have been fasting again..more super green soup and I have some smoked haddock for dins.. I'd just like to point out that after eating SGS three days running life can get a little fragrant .. Wink -

However I'm not sure if I will have lost anything this week because it was a celebratory Chinese last night .. including Spring rolls! (yum) but if I'm the same that will be great .. next fast Sunday , I'm back into 4:3 I think

Anglaise1 · 17/10/2013 18:37

I just love salad (lettuce anyway, with balsamic vinagrette) and have it with just about every meal, except a roast dinner - winter and summer. My salad spinner is one of the most used utensils in my kitchen. My favourite salad at the moment is green salad (whatever type you prefer), tomatoes, parma ham (jambon sec) tomatoes, avocado and parmesan cheese shavings. I've no idea on calories, though, but I have eaten it on fast days before.

Laska42 · 17/10/2013 18:44

Oh and MONCK do grab any help you can get with your DDs school and if she can get to see an educational psychologist , do go for it,. Also look at Dyslexia .org and Dyslexia action (theres lost of others also )

Unfortunately my son wasn't didnt get much support at school ( though as said he didnt make the best of what was on offer), but he did get help for his GCSES and passed all but English , which you cant have a scribe for ( so he'd never have got because he couldn't write quickly enough to be able to do enough questions in the time). It seems a bit daft that , because, he was ok at language and composition and not really too bad at spelling , just has trouble physically writing.

Now I hear they are thinking of allowing kids to do their English GCSE on a computer in the future, so hopefully if that's so, he may be able to go back and get it later on.

When he finally got a psychologist report at college he came out very high on IQ and intelligence ratings ( but then in some way that also made him feel he shouldn't have to try so hard and that with his previous experiences at school didn't help and sadly he dropped out of further ed before finishing his course . ( Ho hum.. ) . But he did get good maths and sciences.. but its difficult to get any jobs these days it seem without Grade C Maths and English . ( id be stuffed.. I didn't get Maths all those years ago..and when I though Id be made redundant the job centre people said id not be able to apply for anything much with out both English and maths grade c equivalent ( they didn't seem to consider as important my many years experience or that I have a degree, a Masters, a Postgrad etc) .. just that I didn't have Maths!!

Laska42 · 17/10/2013 18:45

cyclistist (if you are still talking to me) Mmmm... Chilli sauce . (wonder what its like on smoked haddock)

TheCyclistist · 17/10/2013 19:50

Grin Laska I don't get easily insulted about my Essex roots. Although it depends what age you are as to where you say you live round here. Anyone under 40 calls this East London whilst those over 50 call it Essex. Being 46 I'm kind of in the middle and don't have a clue.......

However let me say loud and clear, here and now, that although my diet may rely more on a set of ingredients from the side of a pack rather than the recipes everyone swaps here......I at no stage...have ever advocated Mayonaisse on top of a donor kebab...with or without chilli sauce Smile

I'm really happy for your son though Laska I hope it's the start of a great future!!!!!!!!!!

Well seem to have successfully navigated another FD, my second of the week (should have been the third but we won't go there Blush ) Just about to sit down to a can of Heinz Spring Veg Soup, then a whole cabbage with a WW Mince Beef Hotpot, everything with loads of chilli sauce......and NO mayonnaise.

Laska42 · 17/10/2013 20:31

[Grin] Bro Essex it is .. (I am well over 50!) but I come from Portsmouth so what can I say?

I often have a whole cabbage or cauliflower or head of broccoli on fast days too.. (love roasted cauli with lemon cumin and chilli just on its own) .

Big plates of veg are the way for FDs I think..

BTW chilli sauce (Franks of course) on smoked haddock was pretty good I didn't have anything else with my fish as id had plenny SGS veggies earlier.. (parp) Grin

NOW just keep me away from the Wine and ill have done a good FD.. so off to make a pot of Mint tea instead.

Talkinpeace · 17/10/2013 21:19

Hang on, we've got a mere stripling (46) nawf ah dah rivuh lad versus the Pompey gal ... pass the popcorn Grin

and you are both wrong - Doner Kebabs are best with no chilli sauce at all - just lashings of garlic mayo and green chillies

whoops
Thursday should be a FD but DH is home and he needed wine !

Anglaise I love avocados but DH loathes them (probably because my mum serves them either under or over ripe but never a point!)

OP posts:
AmericasTorturedBrow · 17/10/2013 21:30

Er....no. Chilli sauce AND garlic mayo

Talkinpeace · 17/10/2013 22:15

OK, we are going to have to have a Doner-off meet up when you are back in the UK ....

OP posts:
Laska42 · 17/10/2013 22:44

.. I've never actually eaten a doner ( see I am posh after all).

Pass the salad cream..perhaps ill have that on me chilli falafel instead Grin

Talkinpeace · 17/10/2013 23:09

Laska
Right, stuff John Lewis, I'll take you to Zorbas for lunch. I've been buying from them for &&&&* years

OK John Lewis then Grin

AmericasTorturedBrow · 17/10/2013 23:40

God I love falafel.

Had prob about 400cals at lunch so miso soup for dinner and that's me done

AmericasTorturedBrow · 18/10/2013 04:10

Meh dinner plans for tomorrow cancelled so swapped FD around - very much enjoyed my pasta pesto with the kids followed by m&m's for dinner!

frenchfancy · 18/10/2013 08:54

Yeah! for laska's DS that is great news.

I love a donner (haven't had one in years though) Best I ever had was 2 am at a wedding, B+G had gone to bed but best man had saved us all some champagne. Someone went out and got us all donners, all in our wedding finery, drinking champagne out of the bottle - Class.

I'm off on a much needed holiday. Driving down to Andalucia for the week (it is only 1400km in the car - gulp). I'm 1.5kg below my target (old target - never got close to the new one) so I'm not going to fast for the next week and a half and I am just going to enjoy myself.

Talkinpeace · 18/10/2013 13:02

Frenchfancy that is _so spooky. When DH and I got married (registry office on the Friday) we had doner kebab and champagne in the garden with my sister for supper.
THe big party was the next day.

hello all, well had a good weekend . Mums birthday meal yesterday , I had whitebait , then grilled plaice followed by apple creme brulee. today we had a long walk over the downs this morning followed by a very late brunch of bacon, sausage, scrambled egg , grilled tomato and mushers .. Just had a glass (or two) of Wine this evening and thats it for today . One happy full-tummed bunny here.Smile

This is what is so great about this WOE - we can eat well at weekends and not worry eh? . I have just made a pot of MR Ls roasted carrot and pepper soup and a dhal with lots of veg in which I will eat with cabbage ,.. and thats my fast days for this week sorted. I

I'm planning doing tomorrow and Tuesday ,and probably Thursday this week .. Back to 10.3 this morning..

How is everyone else doing?

Talkinpeace · 20/10/2013 20:29

Had a very gentle day today - because I had a skin full last night. But hey. I'll be fine by tomorrow.

Am going to fast this week for the first time in a while as have put on 1kg. I ran 60 kms last week (it helps emotionally) so maybe it is due to that - running doesn't necessarily make you lose weight because it makes you hungry....and all that extra muscle (at least I hope that's what it is!)
Good luck to everyone fasting this week.

Talkinpeace · 20/10/2013 21:54

LOL Anglaise you'll get all lardy Wink
How are you keeping by the way?
We need to set you up on a blind date with Mttum as he's recently become single Grin

I had a lovely NFD yesterday after a glorious morning back in the bike. Proper breakfast for good energy, 35miles in the Californian sunshine up the coast and back, then sugar&salt popcorn and candy apples at a Fall Festival and bread fresh out of the oven for dinner - yup, no "proper" food all day and it was brilliant Wink

So so good to get back on the bike, started fundraising already as I'm doing the 545mile bike ride again - thanks again 5:2ers for your support last year!

Am attempting Cardio Barre tomorrow....on a FD....eeeek

Anglaise1 · 21/10/2013 20:58

Hi TIP no contact with ex but it is hard. Have had a few dates but sadly no one compares to him, even though he was a lying cheating *** in the end. He was also charming, funny, handsome and we got on so well, but it wasn't real. I have to remember that.
Running helps and it makes me hungry so at least I'm eating properly and am even going to try a 16:8 tomorrow to get back to fasting in some way.
