Starting on Monday - anyone want to be my buddy?

I'm planning on starting next week - it's my birthday on Thursday so want to wait until after then!

I'm 32, 5'7 and have about 5 stone to lose. I have a 10 month old DS and I have recently been diagnosed with an underactive thyroid gland, which slows the metabolism and makes it harder to lose weight - I started treatment 2 weeks ago and am already feeling much better, so I'm hoping to find losing weight a bit easier. 2 stone of this weight has been gained since having DS, which I feel ashamed about, but have been feeling exhausted and depressed (due mostly to the thyroid, it turns out) and have compensated by comfort eating. Confused

I really hope this will be a solution to 8 years of yo-yo dieting, which have taken me from a size 10 to a size 18 Confused A little nervous of the hunger, but I know it won't kill me.

Does anyone want to be my buddy, for a bit of mutual support?

Wow golly that's amazing! I meant to try & weigh in Boots today and totally forgot but as I had a FD yesterday prob better to weigh after a regular day so might try and get there tomorrow

PeasandCucumbers · 18/08/2013 11:39

Well I weighed in Boots this morning and am very pleased. I have been doing 5:2 for 3 weeks and have done 7 FD's in that time. I wanted to lose about a stone but due to scale issues I didn't have a totally accurate starting weight. This morning I weighed 10st 9lbs with a BMI of 25.3. According to the print out the top of my healthy weight is 10st 7lbs so I am now only 1lb overweight and I am delighted Grin I thought my start weight was 10 13 so I think I have lost 4lbs in 3 weeks which considering I have been to a wedding and had a weekend away I think is great.

At least now I have an accurate weight to work from now.

Hope everyone is having a good weekend. I am FD again tomorrow

goodgollygosh · 18/08/2013 15:33

Well done peasandcucumbers! I bet you ae pleased, I can't wait until I'm in the 10st region! I'm having anothe fast day today, it was planned but I woke up with te period from hell! Since having baby I usually have mild periods with minimum bleeding and no cramps. Well there was blood everywhere on the bed it was awful. (Sorry guys I'm sure none of you needed to be told that). My stomach is agony cramping on and off (thought I was in labour haha). I feel for anyone who suffers like this every month. I can't stomach to eat today. I've drank about 10 pints of water so far and for dinner tonight I'm going to have (30g dry)smash (100 cals) with 4 quorn meatballs fried (1cal) with an onion and one tablespoon of bisto made up with water yum. I know it sounds like crap haha but I really fancy it.
Hope everyone is having a good weekend.

Morning everyone and well done on the weight losses. Seems everyone is doing well.

Fast day for me today. Just jumped on the scales and I've maintained the loss from last week, which feels like a good starting point.

goodgollygosh · 19/08/2013 08:53

That's great luvvies! Good luck for today! Its a nfd for me but I'm still being careful.

butterandcrumpets · 19/08/2013 09:17

Well done, everyone for keeping up the fasting. Some great results, too. According to my scales, I haven't lost any weight last week but my jeans seem a little looser and one of my favourite tops is not as tight anymore around the arms so I suppose that's something. Fast day for me today too.

TheUnicornsGoHawaiian · 19/08/2013 09:20

Just having a read through...can I join you all please. Have been thinking about doing this for a while. Smile

Wearytiger · 19/08/2013 09:31

I forgot to weigh in this morning so will skip it until next week. Into my second fast day at work today, OK so far!

AphraBehn · 19/08/2013 11:13

No loss for me this week, only to be expected as I only did one FD last week, it's TOTM and I ate out twice. I've also not run for nearly 3 weeks.

Am fasting today and Wednesday and plan to run at least twice this week so hopefully will see a difference next weigh in.

Luvvies · 19/08/2013 12:16

Welcome Unicorns

When do you think you first fast day will be?

PeasandCucumbers · 19/08/2013 14:51

FD for me today and so far I have eaten an apple and drank lots! I'm undecided about how I am going to split my calories as my dinner is already done and in the fridge and is only around 250 so will probably eat that early then have a snack later this eve .

Butter it is the NSV's that actually mean something and have a bigger effect on my motivation as ultimately that is what we probably all want, looser or smaller sized clothes and to feel good in them. The number on the scale is just that, a number, so I hope you are still pleased with yourself.

Hi to unicorn, hope your first FD goes well.

I am planning on only weighing once a fortnight in the hope that I will see a change in the numbers if I don't weigh every week. I am now into my fourth week and I cannot remember the last time I went on a diet or tried to change my eating habits that I have stuck to for this long so something must be working Smile

butterandcrumpets · 19/08/2013 17:41

Fast day here too and so far have eaten a boiled egg and probably drank my own body weight in green tea. Am roasting a chicken at the moment and will have some with a big bowl of salad later. You are right, peas, NSVs can have a big effect on motivation and I should 'listen' to them more. Maybe weighing in once a fortnight is the way forward, I'll give it a go.

TheUnicornsGoHawaiian · 19/08/2013 18:05

Thanks everyone.

luvvies tomorrow will be my fast day. I have read lots about 5:2 todau to prepare myself. How many calories do you consume on non fast days?

Also how do you split your 500 cals on fast days? Smile

Luvvies · 19/08/2013 19:51

On non fast days the honest answer is that so far I've probably eaten "too much". Not dropped any bad habits yet. All the talk in the book about wanting to eat healthily hasn't hit me yet! But I haven't counted the calories.

But I lost 3 lb anyway!

So I'm not going to worry until the weight loss stalls. Of course I'll try to eat more healthily, but I'm all for only changing what you can at a time. The fasting is my change, and I'm managing that so far.

I've only done 4 fast days so far though!!!!

For the first 3, I didn't eat until about 5 pm, then had a healthy meal, with a portion of protein and masses of veg or salad. Today was different, I felt nauseous by lunchtime, so had a 43 cal soup. This eve I've not felt too well, so just had weetabix and some chicken as I didn't want to prepare a meal. Odd combination!!

I don't think the feeling unwell is related. I'm on some relatively new medication with some pretty strong side effects and I'm having to increase the dosage. Last night I doubled it again, so I need to habituate to them again.

PeasandCucumbers · 19/08/2013 21:41

I also tend to leave it as long as possible and on my last few FD's (including today which was FD 8 for me) I have managed with only an apple (50 cals) and water and black tea during the day. I then have a decent meal at around 6ish of about 300 cals which leaves approx 150 for an evening snack which means I don't go to bed hungry. For me the mornings are worst but once I get past 12 /1 I find the afternoon fine. It really is not as difficult as I thought it would be and definitely gets easier as you learn what to expect and when your own hunger peaks will be.

My FD today was nearly scuppered by a very stressful late afternoon that left me really wanting a glass of wine but I have managed to resist (not that there is any in the house to resist!) Am feeling pleased now that I didn't give in to it!!

Wearytiger · 19/08/2013 21:41

I fasted today but had lunch instead of dinner ... Didn't work as well but was more convenient at the time. I could do it again, it wasn't possibly difficult, but I will try and avoid it.

Luvvies, at the moment I eat and drink whatever I want on NFDs. I actually want to lose weight slowly and steadily and at the moment this works for me. Plus I'd like to have something in reserve if I start plateauing before I reach my target.

Wearytiger · 19/08/2013 21:42

Impossibly difficult!

Wearytiger · 19/08/2013 21:43

Sorry that should have been addressed to unicorns! Oh dear...

Luvvies · 20/08/2013 22:44

How did you get on Unicorns?

randomwhistle · 21/08/2013 10:36

Hi it's me goodgollygosh. Fast day for me here too. Lots of water then a quorn escalope with 50g couscous for tea tonight. Good luck to anyone fasting.

TheUnicornsGoHawaiian · 21/08/2013 13:09

luvvies it went ok. Had a ryvita about 11am and a big chicken salad for my evening meal. Had a 99 cal choc bar in the evening. Lots of water.

Felt really head achey last night but I think could be because I hadnt had any caffeine.

Was pleased though. Normal eating today and then a fast day again tomorrow. Smile

thank you for asking.

butterandcrumpets · 21/08/2013 14:17

Fasting again today and it's going very well so far. I am definitely not bothered anymore by feeling hungry. Probably going to have a chicken salad tonight but not sure yet. Watching old episodes of Celebrity Masterchef (enjoying the last weeks of the summer hols) and maybe this will give me some inspiration Grin

Luvvies · 21/08/2013 14:53

Well done Unicorns. I'll be there with you tomorrow.

Wearytiger · 22/08/2013 08:29

Weighed myself today and have now lost nine lbs since starting at the beginning of July (eight weeks). I am really pleased. Another nine pounds to go and I will have met my first target (achieve pre pregnancy weight... might set another one after that.) so half way there! I'm going up treat myself to new clothes when I get there (not if).

butterandcrumpets · 22/08/2013 13:47

Well done, weary!
