Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 Thread number 22! Put down that biscuit - you can eat it tomorrow

BetsyBell · 23/06/2013 15:54

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads:
most recent, one before that, another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnichts for putting together all the info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

lost another pound this week and was feeling a bit let down by it then I remembered that this week I have had cake, chocolate and wine AND I've still lost a pound! Smile

Dotty342kids · 05/07/2013 15:55

Thanks all! southeastdwelleer, that's a great BMI, well done! I'd like just to get mine in the healthy range, will think about what happens after that!

TIP you look amazing! And not at all what I'd imagined Grin, funny how we build mental images in our heads isn't it?

BssBossh he's not concerned particularly, but knows he should be lighter. He's just given up smoking (again) and hoping this time it's for good so I'd like him to really embed that before I pester him about his weight Smile. He likes doing 5:2 but has a tendancy to cheat on it and assume that bread has no calories!

Talkinpeace · 05/07/2013 16:01
Grin Just to put numbers to the picture, I'm 48, 5'5" and as of this morning weigh 55.3 kg but as the "defined" arms show I'm very fit so muscle is leaner than "uncontrolled muscle"

I'll put up the picture of when I was at my heaviest ....

Bramblesinforrin · 05/07/2013 16:08

Well done everyone. Hope all are having good days.

Logging in to report my NSV - I started this woe as I was a 14 and about to go into a 16 - had given up on myself a bit. I'm very happy in a 12 now, but today was shopping for a summer skirt and am comfortably in a 10. Good gracious!

BetsyBell · 05/07/2013 16:27

Lookin' fabulous tip! I love before & after pics [waits]

Dotty Yay, haven't we done well this week Grin

Just heard that DH is off out after work yet I'm salivating over the bottle of fizz in the fridge, anyone want to come and share it with me?!

I'm guessing I'm looking pretty ok as people keep asking me what my secret is... I'm only too happy to share [5:2 evangelist]. I am starting to come to terms with being a slim person instead of an overweight one, and I bloody love it! (apologies for self-congratulatory post Blush Grin Grin )

Self congratulations definitely allowed BetsyBell

Yes TiP before pics too - I find the before/after shots so inspiring an motivational!

Talkinpeace · 05/07/2013 16:38

have just uploaded from 1999 .... there are another couple on my old Talkinpeace2 account

and the real point of doing it is that

  • age is no barrier
  • kids are no barrier
  • having fun is no barrier
  • 5:2 is a way of life that is sustainable long term

Brambles
Wahey - well done you
Betsy
and the best bit is that you did not do it with a "diet" and a "target weight" - you did it a week at a time seeing what happened and the method of eating fits all sizes

headintheclouds · 05/07/2013 16:39

hey betsy my DH has just checked in and has to work late AGAIN ! So I will join you in a fizzy one ! Mine is in fridge very chilled and the sun is shining ,just begging for someone to sit on the patio !

Dotty342kids · 05/07/2013 17:10

wowzers tip! Don't quite know what else to say except you're making me think twice about my snacking habits Grin

BsshBossh · 05/07/2013 17:25

Great before & after TiP. I need to summon the courage to post some of mine soon.

brambles betsy woohoo! Enjoy your virtual drink party tonight :)

Have fasted all day but DH texted to say he may be picking up some goodies from Ottolenghi for dinner. I don't usually fast on Fridays for this very reason but kitchen chaos has put me all out of whack. I don't want to limit my calories to 500 cals tonight so I won't and chalk today up as a mini fast. Still won't eat until 8.30 though so a good 23 hour fast.

Talkinpeace · 05/07/2013 17:28

Bssh Go for it. If nothing else trawling through those pictures will remind you WHY you are making the effort.
There are very very few of me when I was that size as I avoided cameras as much as possible.
I still do but not because I'm fat!

dotty its worth it .... try not to snack :-)

Emilythornesbff · 05/07/2013 18:39

Well tip. Looking good.
No wonder you're such an enthusiast.

Btw, you do look almost exactly as I imagined, except that you look younger than 48.

BetsyBell · 05/07/2013 19:09

I love the before and after tip - from delightfully mumsy to hard-ass gym bunny Grin

Apologies for any slurrrrs - my lovely mama came and drank fizz in the sun with me [cheers]

TIP, you look great, great motivation!
Well done Tommy. It?s amazing what you can eat on this woe isn?t it?
Well done Brambles for the NSV. I can?t wait to get to where you are!

How you going fasters?
I had a salad with sardines and a couple of chicken wings from M&S. I feel OK. Am conscious I haven't had a lot of water today so I'm going to have more this evening.

I was looking online about rewarding yourself for weight loss today, as the rewards I always choose are some type of food which isn't a great idea when trying to lose weight.
I read a couple of articles that I found interesting. The idea is instead of treating yourself when you lose weight/inches, treat yourself on your behaviours instead. As an example, instead of buying a new sports bra when you've lost 4lbs, buy it when you've successfully done a whole week without snacking.
I'm going to put that into practice straight away.

No snacking for a week and if I'm successful I'll have a pedicure at my gym.
The next one is eating 16:8 for Monday - Friday. If I do it, I'm going to get my makeup out and have a go at 2 makeup tutorials on youtube.

If I get to the end of the month exercising every other day like I've planned, I'm having full body massage.

I've set more expensive rewards for the ones I find harder.
Anyone else want to give it a go with me?

Emilythornesbff · 05/07/2013 19:29

missunicorn excellent point about rewarding the behaviour rather than the result. It's a much more effective motivator.
I seriously shoud stop snacking. It's so hard sometimes.

cannotfuckingbelievethis · 05/07/2013 19:30

You look great TIP. And definitely don't look 48!

Not done too bad today. Had one or two cups of tea too many I think but stuck to the food side of things. Looking forward to breakfast tomorrow !

wrigglebum · 05/07/2013 21:23

Hi there, may I join? I started 5:2 with a fast day on Wednesday, then one today too. I'm currently 10st 11 at 5ft6. Before children, 10st was my 'skinny' weight, 11st was 'fat' and I usually hovered around 10st7. Between children I was 11st (blamed that on the extra boobs- I gained a couple of cup sizes). About 2 1/2 months ago I was 11st4, but after cutting out fizzy drinks I dropped quite easily to 10st8. Ten days of all inclusive holiday and I went up to 10st12 Blush.

I'd like to get down to 10st, I hope I can do that not too uncomfortably. I have a huge appetite, I'd guess just before our holiday I was eating around 2200 calories or more a day but still losing a bit of weight. I walk loads and run around after the boys and I'm still bf a couple of times in the night (ds2 is 14mo), so I think that helps me burn a lot. Hate to think how much I was having before I cut out the Dr Pepper and chocolate addiction!

I've found the fasting not too bad, but I am drinking so much and still very thirsty and headachey. After my first fast I felt awful the next morning- really sweaty for some reason Confused, so I'm dreading tomorrow morning. Despite today being a fast day managed a bit of fish and chips for lunch, we went to the seaside and it was too much to resist! Just picked the fish out of the batter and had a tiny handful of chips. Did mean a very small dinner this eve and I went to 550 calories today. Think I might take an apple up to bed so I can eat it before I get up, then straight downstairs for breakfast.

Talkinpeace · 05/07/2013 21:31

wriggle
welcome aboard
first question : what are you drinking ?

SoTiredAgain · 05/07/2013 22:17

tip. You look great - really strong, slim and healthy. Would love to be a shorter (Asian) version of you. Grin What is your exercise regime?

Did 16:8 today. Really enjoyed my lunch today (bring and share) and had a huge slab of homemade Victoria sponge for the pudding. Was yummy and thoroughly savoured it. Late dinner of m and s soup and grainy bread. I love m and s food but why are their soups so boring? Anyway, hopefully I am within my TDEE even after the lunch.

I love the fact that I no longer need to snack. I either eat 3 square meals a day (regular NFD), 2 meals a day (16:8) or 1 meal a day (fd). No snacks for me is a big deal, especially coming from GI diet where snacking healthily is positively encouraged. And as long as I eat at my regular evening meal time, I have not had any problems with my blood sugar levels. Smile

HomeEcoGnomist · 05/07/2013 22:42

Hi all

Am de-lurking to join in...having stubbornly refused to do anything like a diet til now, but i think 5-2 is something I can sustain.

I am 5'6 and 11st, hoping to get to 10.

I've been playing around with MFP, and realised how many unnecessary calories I eat. I am terrible for snacking at work and have been concentrating this week on not doing so. I am also dropping the sugar from my tea.

I plan to start my first proper fast day on Mon, and have just done the online shop to include my planned meals.

Grateful for any tips for a newbie!

wrigglebum · 05/07/2013 23:02

Thanks tip. I only drink water and herbal teas (camomile, red bush or fennel), nothing caffeinated any more and no diet drinks. I worried it would be boring but actually it's great. I love sparkling water too, and a very occasional treat of an elderflower cordial.

I've been using MFP too, it's really easy (and scary!), and I've been looking at the hairy dieters cookbook we have- loads of ideas for low calorie evening meals.

I skipped breakfast today to try to get a long fast period and I was surprised by how ok I was. I don't think I've ever missed breakfast before and even a late breakfast normally puts me in a grump.

BsshBossh · 05/07/2013 23:20

Broke my fast with moussaka and chocolate (with whiskey cream inside) cake Blush. Ah well, it is Friday after all. Next week I return to my usual Monday/Thursday routine - this works much better for me.

BsshBossh · 05/07/2013 23:24

SoTired yey on the no snacking! I find it very liberating.

bombayjoe · 06/07/2013 05:50
