Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 Thread number 22! Put down that biscuit - you can eat it tomorrow

BetsyBell · 23/06/2013 15:54

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads:
most recent, one before that, another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnichts for putting together all the info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Friday weigh in! It's a good one for me - finally managed to beat my previous low, from 2 months ago and got down to 9 stone 12.

Interestingly that's after a week of no 'formal' exercise - just my usual rushing/cycling about plus the odd round of 50 squats, but no booze in the week, some 4pm snacking of mostly fruit, some ice cream but nothing excessive.

Grin

At this point, each pound lost is harder won but also quite noticeable - I can see and feel the difference.

tryinghard2 · 05/07/2013 09:00

Im not doing adf but im doing 4:3 - i do usually the same 3 days each week.

tryinghard2 · 05/07/2013 09:01

Oh bread&wine no i havent had chance to weigh at boots yet may try tday

Cat98 · 05/07/2013 09:07

Well done betsy, fantastic!

I can't find a tape measure but i found a test where you use your fingers to measure your wrist and according to that I'm medium build. At 5 ft 3 I still look chubby when I'm above 9 stone though, perhaps it's just the way I carry the weight.

Fasted yesterday, today is an nfd and I'm meeting dh for lunch at wetherspoons. I'm going to try not to eat until then, shouldn't be too hard as weirdly (as usual though after a fast day and partly why I love this woe) I just don't feel hungry, I do feel full of energy!

Itsaboatjack · 05/07/2013 09:23

My body frame is a medium too according the calculator so I need to lose another stone to be in the middle of it, which is where i was pretty much aiming for anyway.

Most importantly for me though is to stop yoyo dieting, I have lost and gained the same 2-3 stone over many many years more times than I care to remember. I'm happy with this woe so actually I don't mind if it takes me another year to lose that stone as long as I don't start gaining again.

Good luck all today's fasters. I'm on an NFD but will be doing a 16:8

BsshBossh · 05/07/2013 09:23

Big whoop for Betsy!

BetsyBell · 05/07/2013 09:41

Thank you! Grin am celebrating with a fresh ground coffee with a dollop of top-of-the-mil cream (NFD!) x

dlk227 · 05/07/2013 10:25

Well done Betsy! I did smile at your previous post re measurements - my recipes are marked up with conversions as I go along (measure that cup of flour, etc. once, then weigh it for future reference). I'm a huge convert to recipes with weights rather than volume measurements!

JB30 · 05/07/2013 11:54

My scales showed a gain of 1.2 but I need a... Sorry tmi alert - movement. Bearing that in mind - I've probably either Sts or gained .5 of a pound. I hate the b*stard scales.

headintheclouds · 05/07/2013 12:09

JB I feel your pain , it's a bit demoralising when you know you've worked your butt off and gained isn't it?
But after 5 months of this I know only too well that if you just keep slowly plodding on it'll come off eventually.. Plus if you need a p** , I'd have another WI later!Smile
Thanks everyone for your wise words.. I know it's only fluid!

Dotty342kids · 05/07/2013 12:40

sotiredagain made the Thai steamed trout last night and it was delish, thank you for the recipe!

BsshBossh would agree with you about the tendency to fat around the middle in the Indian community. Last time we were at a get together of in laws' family (funeral, ironically enough) I was really horrified, particularly by the girths of the men. It seems that as soon as they get married / are over 30 it just expands and expands. And I include my lovely DH in that. He's trying to reduce it but the risk of heart disease and other nasties does worry me. He doesn't have a sweet tooth, it's all carbs and salt for him. After our lovely FD dinner he had two pieces of thick white toast for a mid evening snack Shock

Dotty342kids · 05/07/2013 12:47

headintheclouds don't despair, give it a couple of days and I bet that "increase" will have gone away again!

and yay for Betsy very good news!
I've seen 10st 7 again this morning after yesterday's fast day which is a new low (though briefly glimpsed it last week before scales settled at 10st 8) so am pleased with that.

Away in London this weekend and I know it's going to be one long round of carb laden picnic type food. Really going to try hard not to overindulge..

postmanpatscat · 05/07/2013 12:57

Well done betsy and dotty

My wrist was 14.5cm which is small frame apparently, range 52-58kg and I'm presently 53 so happy with that (and explains why I looked so dreadful at 63.7kg when I started 5:2)

Glorious weather here, off to the O2 tonight and cannot decide whether to change into the rather short dress I brought to work with me or go with the trousers and top I'm already wearing because it might be cold on the way home and I might be too old to get my legs out

MissUnicorn · 05/07/2013 12:58

Afternoon all,
Hope everyone is doing OK.
Well done Betsy for the loss Smile
JB I've been there, definitely sounds like retention. There's a product I've used from Superdrug call For a flat stomach by Optibac. I used it the week before my period and it made a difference. That reminds me to pick up another box for myself.

Yesterday I went to a wake and ate like I've not seen food for years!
I still feel full so this is going to be a fast day for me. I'm going to plan my food for the next week and try to stick to it.
Any one interested in being my friend on MFP?

BsshBossh · 05/07/2013 13:39

Dotty is your DH concerned about his weight, and what does he think about 5:2?

Halfway through FD now and it's going well so far. Somehow managing to sit at a computer and work all day without feeling the desire to pop out for a "light bite" (don't want to mention the dreaded snack word).

Just realised I've been on 5:2 for a little over 5 months. Woohoo!

Talkinpeace · 05/07/2013 13:48

Well I had extra cheese with my lunch today as I seem to have lost another pound! BMI is 20.2
I've put up a photo for a few days so people can see what bossy TiP looks like :-)

BsshBossh · 05/07/2013 13:55

TiP your username doesn't seem to be "clickable". Is there a direct link to your profile?

BsshBossh · 05/07/2013 13:56

Ignore post, TiP, managed to click. You are looking good :) Have you got a before photo too?

Cat98 · 05/07/2013 13:59

Well done dotty!

You look great TIP, definitely deserved the extra cheese :)

I broke my fast at lunch time with 900 cals ish at wetherspoons, enjoyed every bite!

EagleRiderDirk · 05/07/2013 14:11

tip If I get that skinny I'm having extra cheese. Well I'm not as I don't like cheese but I'll have extra something else once in a while!

Have had 2 very awful Fridays and 2 not great Tuesdays in a row. I have come to the decision that whilst fasting on the days I have my kids with no reprieve was great to start with (I was too busy to notice the time), things have moved on. Specifically DS has moved on and I think I need all my energy to stop him trying to climb the furniture and get him sleeping even when DD doesn't like it! From next week I'm joining the Mon/Thurs club.

Southeastdweller · 05/07/2013 14:39

Congrats to betsy and dotty!

Two pounds off this week so at another all-time low and a BMI of 21.7 so I'm happy (I haven't been this light since 1986!)...but I need to start doing weights because I'm a long way from looking as good as I want to be - looking good wearing next to nothing on the beach for me personally is my aim looks-wise, though I know the health benefits are more important. I think I'll start yoga soon also.

Out with a friend for some drinks tonight in the divine weather and even now I'm looking forward to fasting tomorrow!

Enjoy your weekends.

headintheclouds · 05/07/2013 15:09

well done to betsy and dotty

TIP You look amazing, I think we are same age and height (49 and 5'3" if I recall correctly from previous threads- makes me sound like a stalker)
I have a long way to go before I have BMI of 20, might post a photo of myself when I get there!Grin

AmericasTorturedBrow · 05/07/2013 15:37
