Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads:
most recent, one before that, another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnichts for putting together all the info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Am I the only large frame on here then??

168cm (5'6") and my wrist is 17cm. So I am large frame, ideal weight 64-72kg. Weight this morning 64.8kg Grin I'm pretty sure I've never seen a 64 in front of my weight before and I have been weighing in kg for at least 17 years.

peplum41 · 04/07/2013 20:36

Hi Angie, well done on your first fast, it took me many fasts to get as low as 565. It also took many fasts to build upto not eating from midnight to 7pm the next day. You seem to get used to going long periods without food. Plus, the incentive for me is that this is when the body does its repair mode thing. I am apple-shaped with PCOS, and longer periods without eating appear to help with the insulin sensitivity, which is also helping the weight come off my waist and back. I do drink lots of peppermint tea, and the people I look after are young adults who just need someone there. I spend most of the night watching tv, reading and flicking through the net on my phone. If you're place is more active, I can understand your trepidation. I don't think I'm inclined to be as active as you, something I'm working on. I occasionally chuck in a few squats and arm swivels during the wee small hours.

frenchfancy · 04/07/2013 20:37

x posted with bssh so that means I'm still overweight then? Sad Confused

Talkinpeace · 04/07/2013 20:40

French
only if you are Asian too!! Am I the only ex blonde on here Grin

EagleRiderDirk · 04/07/2013 20:43

tip I think it may be just you an me Wink

SoTiredAgain · 04/07/2013 20:46

tip. I was blonde once Grin. Didn't really work!

BsshBossh · 04/07/2013 20:46

frenchfancy those BMI revisions I posted apply to Indians (India) only.

BsshBossh · 04/07/2013 20:48

I've always fancied a streak of blonde in my dark air. I saw an Indian girl like this at a concert at the Royal Festival Hall and have been trying to summon the courage to replicate ever since.

AngieM2 · 04/07/2013 20:54

Aw thanks for the advice peplum, my job is really busy (maternity) so am usually running around like an idiot all night with no break then being so hungry I'd eat my own arm! But I'm going to take on board what you've said and give it a tentative try....or at least think twice about what and when I eat at night. Thanks

BigW · 04/07/2013 21:00

I am new to this thread and have been doing this for about 3 weeks now.

Just wanted to say, tomato soup!? Really? Did I read it wrong? I can have lovely yummy tomato soup? 188kcal per half can? Well, too late if not - I've nearly finished it!

frenchfancy · 04/07/2013 21:02

But why should it make a difference if you are Asian? Surely our body type is what matters not our racial origin.

frenchfancy · 04/07/2013 21:03

BigW yes you can have tomato soup (and carrot soup, and butternup squash soup ...) I introduced 5:2 to the ladies at my school - they call it the soup diet.

Southeastdweller · 04/07/2013 21:16

Oh and happy Independence Day everyone! NFD here and I've just polished off a slice of M&S New York vanilla cheesecake. I feel that on days like this it's very important to celebrate the 'special relationship' between us Brits and the Yanks Grin

BigW · 04/07/2013 21:17

Smile been living off poached fish and vegetables!

BsshBossh · 04/07/2013 21:44

french TIP's links explain in more detail but it comes down to differences in body fat composition and health risk factors.

BsshBossh · 04/07/2013 21:45

Before 5:2 I hardly ever ate soup. Now I can't get enough of it - FDs or not :)

cannotfuckingbelievethis · 04/07/2013 21:47

I'm starting (again) tomorrow. A couple of false starts but I turn 39 in 3 weeks and have a big wedding in September so time to remove my finger from my bottom and do something. Tomorrow's eating looks like this :

Brekkie: 60 g porridge, water and 200ml of almond milk (only 29 cals per 200ml according to the pack)

Lunch: (a couple of fingernails perhaps) and some mint tea

Dinner: Two boiled eggs and 2 ryvita

Comes in at 486 by my calculations. I'll get a bit more adventurous with my cooking hopefully.

cannotfuckingbelievethis · 04/07/2013 21:49

I meant to ask, does anyone on here to alternate day fasting or only 5:2 ?

Talkinpeace · 04/07/2013 21:54

BigW Soup - nom nom - lots of us have lots of it each week : a 500g pot of fresh soup is under 500 calories and tres tres filling

ryangosling some of the hardcore do but most us are wimps!

Breadandwine · 04/07/2013 23:23

ryan most of us try and avoid carbs on a fast day - 60g of porridge is 220 calories in one hit - and a lot us do without breakfast, although in my case it took a while to work up to this.

Check out the recipe thread (link in OP) for loads of tasty dinner recipes for

Emilythornesbff · 05/07/2013 07:39

ryangoslingspants someone was doing ADF. Was it aka??
Stick around and someone will pipe up.
I tried 4:2 (well for one week Grin) I was crap at it. Ate like a competitive pie eater for my NFDs!!
But now I do a "me" version of 2 x 36 hour "zero ish" (allowing some milk in hot drinks) fasts.
Not that you asked that but I am feeling boggy Blush

Enjoying coffee, bacon, egg, toast on my NFD.
Planning to skip lunch and have a luscious chicken salad for dinner.

headintheclouds · 05/07/2013 07:48

Morning all, well a quick stamping of feet here. I knew last weeks WI was too good to be true, this week Im up 1.5 lbs . Its TOM and the pattern for me ( loss, loss, stay the same etc) but its still so annoying and its the first time Ive increased by that much after a fast day...
tell me its only fluid retention

Emilythornesbff · 05/07/2013 08:05

headintheclouds very likely to be fluid retention.
I think we should all discount WIs around TOM.

SoTiredAgain · 05/07/2013 08:09

headintheclouds. It's fluid retention, for sure.

Another one here who's feeling the totm effect. STS weight so pleased with that.

BsshBossh · 05/07/2013 08:24

Another vote for the TOM-effect headintheclouds.

Right - no visits planned to Ikea today so let's try again... FD today. Bring it on! Nothing until dinner then a low calorie chicken korma ready meal (kitchen still out of action).

Who else is fasting today?
