Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 Thread number 22! Put down that biscuit - you can eat it tomorrow

BetsyBell · 23/06/2013 15:54

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads:
most recent, one before that, another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnichts for putting together all the info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

tip i measure:

wrist 15.5cm
ankle 21.5cm

am 5' 6"
bmi 24.88 (eeek only just in healthy)
lowest bmi fasting 24.21
target 10 stone 22.5 (ish) BMI I honestly think If I got much below 10 stone I would start to look scrawny, or I would certainly need to build up some muscles, and my boobs would disappear!

mumofcrazynamedkids · 04/07/2013 15:30

thanks bsshh I'm sort of on the cusp of small to medium, so if I was the top weight for small frame that says I should be 133pounds, or 9 stone 7, which is a bmi of 21.47, interesting, might be a good experiment to see if I can get there. definitely food for thought.

EagleRiderDirk · 04/07/2013 15:41

tip
wrist - 15.5cm
ankle - 24.5
I come from a family of tiny wristed and elephant legged people (though I thought I'd escaped that...)

I don't think anyone is suggesting breakfast is a bad thing but there's also no harm in skipping a meal and breakfast is the easiest to do. the more research coming our of intermittent fasting, the more this seems to be backed up by science. personally, I prefer to have breakfast but sometimes life gets in the way. today it got to 11 before I even had time for breakfast so I decided to skip totally and make sure I had the 16hr fast.

EagleRiderDirk · 04/07/2013 15:42

oh, its an nfd for me BTW. FD tomorrow

dlk227 · 04/07/2013 16:04

JB30, thank you. Despite being in the UK for 10 years, I still think in lbs (though I can speak 'stones' if necessary) :) Good luck with the rest of your fast day. I'm a lunch & dinner person as well.

postman - I am just about ready to maintain, but a little nervous about it, to be honest. Good to know that you've continued to lose/maintain. Was thinking that I would try to move to 6:1 but keep a tight band (so if I go above 10 st, for example, I'd go 5:2 for the week). Right now, I still bounce above that, so still doing 5:2 but I'm a bit more relaxed about it.

Emily Thanks

BetsyBell · 04/07/2013 16:23

I like measurements:

Height 165cm (5'5")
Wrist 15.5
Ankle 21

According to your link Bssh I'm a medium and at my ideal weight at the top end :)

According to my calculations I need to lose a few pounds off my thighs before I can truly be a size 10 on my bottom half. My thighs do like to store that fat, I reckon I'd survive a long winter off them Grin.

OP posts:
BetsyBell · 04/07/2013 16:32

mocnk Sadly my boobs have entirely disappeared and I feel a bit bony on the top half but it's all starting to even out I think (I hope!)

emily I often change days. It's usually Mondays and Thurs but sometimes Sunday is better, or Friday.

dlk I come from a strange era for measurements - I have no idea about farenheit, measure people in feet and inches but everything else in metres, grew up with stones, pounds and ounces then everything changed to kilos. And all our roads are in miles of course despite everything else now being metric 'officially'. Don't get me started on having to convert US cup measurements to grammes... Grin

Thanks bshh

Emilythornesbff · 04/07/2013 17:41

Thanks mumofcrazynamedkids and betsybell

Oddly, when I'm on a FD I feel like I could do a whole bunch in a week.
But I think that's only because I don't have to Grin.
Also, I haven't managed to stop eating crap on NFDs. Shame.

JB30 · 04/07/2013 17:59

Just finished my dinner, coming in at 540 cals for the whole fd. Oh dear, there's a lot of day left to get through Sad
Forgot to get low cal jelly - raging. Need some major distraction tactics, I suppose I could do some housework (shudder)

MissUnicorn · 04/07/2013 18:18

Hi peeps, hope you're enjoying the lovely weather. I weighed in today 3lbs lighter however I put 5lbs on my lowest weight when I started taking iron tablets. Angry
So while I am happy with the loss, I still have 2lbs to go until I'm back to my lowest weight.
Hiya all fasters, keep going you're nearly there!

Emilythornesbff · 04/07/2013 18:20

Ooh, low cal jelly. There's an idea.
I'm sitting at table while ds eats fish fingers and chips and dh eats scampi and chips.
No food for me
[faints]

Dotty342kids · 04/07/2013 18:43

virgin really good to hear your progress report Smile

So, I've been fasting today and it's been fine. Got to 4.30 and started preparing kids / our dinner.
We're having Thai steamed trout which looks amazing so phoned DH to see when he'd be home as I was starting to salivate. Not till 7.45. 7.45!!! I was ravenous so promptly had a couple of mouthfuls of the tuna mayo mix I was making up, a few of my DD's "healthy" crisp things and a biscuit! Drat.

Still, it's taken the edge off and I suspect I'll still sneak in at around 500 cals.

Emmabryant123 · 04/07/2013 18:54

Starting this tommorow.
Am 9 stone 7 but only five foot, ideally want to weigh 8 stone so 1.5 stone to loose.
Had an indulgent today
Two cups of tea at 6:00am
(Dont do breakfast) so a peach and a banana for late breaky at 10:00am I really struggle to eat in the morning.
Lunch at 12:30pm:
Tuna and sweetcorn sandwich
Activia yoghurt
Apricot
Twix caramel slice (I work part time and this was my pack up)
Dinner 5:45pm: home made minestrone soup, egg mayo sandwiches, salad. Followed my 8 squares galaxy.
I know I'll be fine all morning as I rarely eat much then but come lunch time ill struggle. I'm planning in taking a nap about 2:00 actually. As I get home at 1:30pm tommorow and kids will be at my mums house . Then waking up and having a 500 cal dinner.
Chicken stir fry (no sauce) 279 calories according to mfp. Have chicken breast in, stir fry pack veg and going to add onions, cherry toms and cabbage to it. Not sure what else ill have with it, I want something filling so no sugary things. Maybe have a few cherries , a peach which leaves me at 402 calories.
Then I'll think of something else.
As I don't have much weight to loose. If I stick to 500 calories on two days a week can I eat what I like in reason within reason on the other days. I don't care how quickly I loose as long as I loose. Don't mind if I only loose half a pound a week. So would need to make 1700 cal deficit roughly a week to do that, I've eaten around the region of 2,800 calories today.
Really need to get a grip on my eating before its to late.

Prawntoast · 04/07/2013 18:59

wrist 14cm, can't deny I'm small framed - ideal weight 49-55kgs, so that's a further loss of between 7 - 13kgs or in old money lowest weight 7.10, don't think I've been that since I was about 12! I think the lowest weight I have been as an adult was 8st 2lb and I wasn't skinny then, so I suspect around 8st is optimal, that's another 24 lbs, I reckon I might be there by Christmas although when I come back off holiday I plan on upping the toning exercise as although the fat is coming off what's underneath looks flabby. So I'm not sure I'll lose as much weight, that's why it's so important not to just focus on the scales.

AngieM2 · 04/07/2013 19:07

I had a good first FD yesterday, came in at 565 which I was happy with as I'd done one and a half hours at the gym where I nearly died in spin class. Felt awful when i went to the gym this morning, no energy at all, even after having a banana so must watch this that i might be lethargic the day after FD. Had worked out my TDEE wrong and thought it was over2500 but fortunately recalculated before I started eating today and it was a more realistic 1850 cals. Have about 150 left for today but desperately want a huge G&T plus I haven't included any exercise calories in my allowance today so I'm having one. Having another FD tomorrow as I can't bear to do one at the weekend.

peplum so to clarify....you start your fast at midnight during your nightshirt then don't eat til 7pm when you get up then have a NFD the next day? I'm admiring your resolve...I'm sure I couldn't not eat anything all night at work, I'd actually die!

SoTiredAgain · 04/07/2013 19:24

Well done to everyone who lost today. emma and I think prawn. Another shorty here. I was around 11 stones too. But most of the weight has gone (although only a recent convert to 5:2).

tip. Is that BMI of max 23 for Asians as in Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi etc. origin or Asians as in Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese etc. origin?

So today was going to be a 16:8 but I woke up dizzy. I decided to have breakfast and ended up having three square meals, no snacks. I think I have to be realistic when I have my totm because its such a struggle to keep a lid on the hunger and the mood swings. Go with the flow kind of thing.

Tomorrow is junk fest lunch so deffo no breakfast.

headintheclouds · 04/07/2013 19:34

another medium frame here according to bshhh calculator
wrist14.5 cm, ankle 20cm , 5 ft 3 and currently 10st2 , so I still have another 8 lbs to get to the upper end of healthy weight !
Spookily that is my next mini -goal.
FD for me today and Im having leftover curry from Tuesday fast day very soon.
Have just made Nigellas Malteser traybake for our school fete for DD to take in tomorrow..so far Ive resisted a bite but everytime I open the fridge it winks at meWink....
have a lovely sunny weekend everyone , looking forward to fiZzy rose wine in the garden tomorrow!

BsshBossh · 04/07/2013 19:39

I'm right at the border as medium crosses into large framed. It puts my ideal BMI as 23 so another 10 lbs to go. But I want to be closer to 22 so will just take it day by day and see how I look/feel. I'm in no rush. I'm really enjoying being as slim as I am for the first time in 2 decades!

TIP thanks for those links - very instructive. I'm Indian and have observed (quietly) how overweight many family members and friends are - especially in the belly area - and yes, there is a lot of diabetes. I am definitely now going to target my BMI to the lower range of healthy.

SoTiredAgain · 04/07/2013 20:29

Wrist 14.5 cm
Ankle 19 cm
Height 4 ft 11 ish
Currently 8 st 6
Current BMI 24.7

bssh's calculator has me at medium build. Ideal weight between 7st 11 and 8st 9. Obviously I am aiming for towards the lower end. 8st has a BMI of 20, which is well with the maximum BMI of 23 for Asians.

SoTiredAgain · 04/07/2013 20:30

Thanks, tip for info re:Asians

Southeastdweller · 04/07/2013 20:30

tortoise I'm with mttum on the importance of breakfast. Apart from boiling eggs, consider grilling some sausages or bacon and having that cold the next day or warm if you have a microwave oven at work. Two lean grilled rashers of bacon are 107 calories and 1 small sausage is 59 calories. You could add tomatoes and mushrooms also. I've skipped breakfast maybe just a dozen times max since starting this WOL almost six months ago and have done really well. The key to losing and maintaining the weight is that this WOE adapts to your lifestyle but I'm sure you know that anyway. Skipping breakfast is also worth considering.

BsshBossh · 04/07/2013 20:33

According to this article www.healthizen.com/health-special/world-obesity-day/bmi-in-indians.aspx India's health ministry has revised their BMI guidelines to:

Less than 18.4 - Underweight
18.5 - 22.9 - Normal
23 - 24.9 - Overweight
More than 25 - Obese
