Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 Thread number 22! Put down that biscuit - you can eat it tomorrow

BetsyBell · 23/06/2013 15:54

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads:
most recent, one before that, another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnichts for putting together all the info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

BsshBossh enjoy your IKEA visit! We had new kitchen in Oct so well remember the excitement of planning it all out Smile
Good news on the scales itsaboat

Fast day for me today. Work plus long dog walk with friend, then am determind to get out and sit in the garden for a bit at some point, to soak up some of this lovely sun!

Good luck all Thursday Fasters!

BetsyBell · 04/07/2013 08:26

Hello everyone, fast day today and I've been holding steady for a few days at just under 10 stone so hoping to consolidate that today Grin.

Lots of linen trouser wearing at the moment and the draw strings are highly essential if I don't want to show the world my knickers (and the rest of my legs!)... size 10s are calling me which is a particularly poignant NSV as 2 summers ago I shifted up to size 16 and had been in 14s forever before that.

Fast day has to be today as I may have ordered a case of wine to arrive tomorrow, with lots of fizzy items in it Grin Grin

Hmmmmmmmmmmm, don't you love that lovely light, virtuous, empty but not hungry feeling you get the morning after a fast?
Will enjoy it for a few more hours before stuffing my face with something yummy! :-D

Itsaboatjack · 04/07/2013 08:57

Mmmm Swedish meatballs in Ikea. I've not had them since we had our kitchen done last year. Enjoy Grin

Dotty342kids · 04/07/2013 09:02

Betsy oh I hope you're in those size 10's soon, that would be fantastic! I am comfortably in all my 14s and some are definitely in need of a belt to keep them up but not sure I'm brave enough to actually go and try on some 12s yet...

somewherebecomingrain · 04/07/2013 09:05

tortoise my heart goes out to you. I have 2 but I'm on mat leave. But I had to give up for a week! Still losing weight though with a few 16:8s. Albeit v v slowly.

How about microwaveable ready meals - most supermarkets have healthy ones, m&s have a 'fuller longer' range and some are 350 cals.

How about a pack of cooked or smoked salmon tipped into a prepared leafy salad?

Also skipping breakfast is def an easy win.

X

mumofcrazynamedkids · 04/07/2013 10:38

morning all, so NFD today, but actually aiming for a half fast, although it's 4th July ....happy Independence day for any US friends, and I work for a US firm, so there is a strong likelihood of Pecan pie, brownies and pumpkin pie later, which I will not be able to resist as they get from he most amazing bakery, so just not eating breakfast then and fruit packed for the train journey tonight.

so weigh in after first fast on Tues I was 11 2 and today 11 dead, so am really hopeful to get back in the 10's by next week and then continue downwards.

loving the not feeling hungry after fasting, and actually loving the feeling of ADF, but not sure i'll manage to do any extra fasts over the weekend, but I'm going to avoid snacking and breakfasts and see if that helps.

fenneltea · 04/07/2013 10:59

Hello all, new member here and I want to thank everyone for these inspirational threads!

I'm on my second week of 5:2. I got the shock of my life when I was weighed at the doctors and my weight had crept up to 11 stone, I'm only 5 foot one and a bit so didn't carry it well! I'm 47 and think that my metabolism has definitely changed, I just can't eat how I used to any more. :(

I managed to get down to 10 stone 9 with 'ordinary' dieting in a few weeks, but felt guilty all the time and hated calorie counting so began the 5:2. I'm now hovering between 10 7 and 10 6 after just two weeks, and I feel much more energetic and aware of proper hunger instead of eating for eating's sake.

Fasting today, so trying to hold on for as long as possible without eating, had a peppermint and liquorice tea which helps quell any pangs. Also got a Thai curry ready meal pot on offer from Sainsbury's at one hundred and something calories, so will have that later if I need it.

Good luck to everyone, I am drooling at the thought of pecan pie now. :D

dlk227 · 04/07/2013 11:37

Hi all,

I'm mostly a lurker here, but thought I'd share a bit of my geeky analysis. I started this WOE in mid-February at 154.4 lbs and am now at 138.4 lbs (I'm 5'6" for the record). I typically fast Mons & Weds and have found it reasonably easy (with the exception of one spectacular fail, to the tune of 4,000 cals!). As I'm pretty much at my goal weight, the losses have slowed significantly but more importantly for me, I've been able to maintain fairly easily. I've put together some stats, which shows how variable the weight loss has been over time. Generally I weigh myself most days, so there's a lot of bouncing around along the way!

Total days on 5:2: 143
Total weight lost: 16 lbs
Avg days to lose 1 lb: 9 days

9 days -5.8 lbs 1.6 days/lb
10 days -0.8 lbs 12.5 days/lb
18 days -2.2 lbs 8.2 days/lb
16 days -0.8 lbs 20.0 days/lb
5 days -1.6 lbs 3.1 days/lb
18 days -2.2 lbs 8.2 days/lb
24 days -0.8 lbs 30.0 days/lb
43 days -1.8 lbs 23.9 days/lb

(okay, apparently extra spaces or tabs get stripped out, so it's a little hard to read)

EagleRiderDirk · 04/07/2013 11:46

tortoise how old are you los? Dd is 2 and is OK for a while whilst I prepare something. ds is 9m though so often I eat around nap times. lunch is often a sarnie or leftovers.

JB30 · 04/07/2013 11:54

dlk loved the breakdown of weight over the months, really nice to go from just over 11 stone to under 10!
Can't wait to see 10 something. 2nd FD and all good do far, not bad even though I was dreading it. Will eat about 1pm, then dinner at 6pm - tomorrow I feast Grin out for dinner, can't wait. Have babysitter, digging out the high heels and slinky frock

virginposter · 04/07/2013 11:56

tortoise there have been some very good suggestions from others re breakfasts for you but I am with somewherebecomingrain with the suggestion of no breakfast.
When I started 5:2 August 2012 I very quickly did 24 (ish) hour fasts and found after a while that each morning on NFD's I ate my breakfast but did not particularly enjoy it or even feel hungry before it. So I decided then to stop eating breakfast on all days unless I was really hungry (about 3 times since then I've actually had it) and it's very liberating as there's no need to think about it or find time for it.
Another positive side effect is that I've (unintentionally) been doing 16:8 (mini fast) every day which helped to speed weight loss and also gave me a buffer for when I over indulged on weekends (and sometimes in the week Wink).
Now, I've lost 30lbs, am a size 10 and have sucessfully maintained for a few months.
Best of luck working out what works for you Smile

postmanpatscat · 04/07/2013 12:15

Well done squidgy tortoise and betsy on your losses

And dlk interesting reading and v encouraging for others still on their journey. Are you ready to maintain now? I've lost 6lbs since I started 6:1 two months ago and at the moment it's more like 13:1 than 6:1 and the weight is holding steady. virgin, tip and myself are proof that this is sustainable, and many others too.

Welcome fennel - pecan pie? Have some tomorrow!

mttum · 04/07/2013 12:27

What on earth was I thinking, having wine last night? Completely forgot about "dry July" Shock

Oh well, it was just the once; it'll have to be "slightly damp July now Blush

Emilythornesbff · 04/07/2013 12:33

Well done itsaboatjack, dlk227, mumof and virginposter On your WIs
And betsybell on your trousers NSV

All inspirational.

tomorrowweeat yes. I do love that feeling.
I think lots of us are fasting today. Thursday is popular.
I'm going for another almost zero fast (allowed milk in T&C and low cal hot choc but no actual food) and they're getting easier.
I'd like to change my FD though. ATM both my FDs are on ys when I have both DCs at home. I think it would be easie to have one of them while busy little toddlerthorne is with the cm. so I might try a Monday and Thursday.
What do you think?
Anyone tried moving their days? Or doing 2 with just one NFD in between?
Keen to hear
Thanks
Em

Talkinpeace · 04/07/2013 13:21

tortiose
I do not have breakfast, ever.
On a fast day I have a pint of tea while making packed lunches and tidying up before the school run.
On non fast days I have a glass of orange juice as well.

Lunch : I'll second hard boiling batches of eggs : if you are at work, make up a tupperware box of green salad, pop some whole, non shelled hard boiled eggs in. At lunch time, quickly shell them and mangle them with a fork and scoff : minimum stink and good high protein.

Otherwise my utter utter top tip for filling warm meals is pots of fresh veg soup ... microwave or on the hob. Sod all calories, really filling - and a GOOD thing to eat in front of small kids.

Emilythornesbff · 04/07/2013 13:42

TIP I do like the idea of permanently excluding a meal.
But I like breakfast. Especially at weekends.
So wondered if an alternative; either have bf or lunch on a NFD might work. Hmmm?
I know you're a bit of a slimming guru here. And have lowed your BMI impressively. At my heaviest (that I dared weigh Grin ) mine was 25. Now it's 21. My GP reckons I should stay there but I'm wondering what's considered super good these days. Any thoughts?

EagleRiderDirk · 04/07/2013 13:48

nsv for me here. event coming up in a couple of months so bought a few dresses, all size 16. wasn't expecting anything to fit as even when I've been a 12 I've required more than a 16 just to fit my bust in. 2out of 3 fit beautifully. I am so happy about this its ridiculous. this may of course be something to do with the average boob size increasing and manufacturers increasing sizes accordingly but I am happy! Grin

still look like a bit of a whale in them, but I'm consoling myself that I'm more of a beluga whale than a killer now Wink

mttum · 04/07/2013 13:48

While I think there's nothing wrong with experimenting, some newcomers to the thread may pick up the message that breakfast is de facto a "bad thing". Some of us can do without it, and even thrive without it, but for some like me it is both needed and pleasurable.

Talkinpeace · 04/07/2013 13:50

Emily
Ah yes, sorry, I did not make myself clear : Saturdays, Sundays and holidays - depending what other meals are planned in the day - often include breakfast, but miss out lunch instead.
Fried bread, streaky bacon, black pudding and poached eggs - nom nom
actually this Saturday its kippers
and Sunday may well be croissants

ideal weight : it REALLY REALLY depends on your build.
I looked like a lard arse at BMI 23, I could safely get down to 19
one of my gym friends would look ILL at below 22

as a comparison, measure your wrist and ankle
wrist - tightly round and over the bony lump : mine is 15cm
ankle - at the smallest point : mine is 20cm
what are other people's .... ?

Also, the latest guidance is that Asian Women should aim for a max BMI of 23 - because most are small framed

Emilythornesbff · 04/07/2013 14:11

[scampers off to measure wrist]

16cm

So, I reckon I could be thinner.

virginposter · 04/07/2013 14:31

mttum I disagree with your comment that newbies may feel that breakfast is 'de facto/a bad thing'. I think you underestimate their intelligence as nowhere in my or TiP's post did we say that.
We are here to help and give advice and inform on what has and does work for us and presume that others will take it as such and as I said in my post 'work our what works for you'.

Emilythornesbff · 04/07/2013 14:41

What about changing days?
Any thoughts?

[needy]

BsshBossh · 04/07/2013 15:10

Emily here's a good wrist/weight calculator:
health.bizcalcs.com/Calculator.asp?Calc=Frame-Size-Wrist

mumofcrazynamedkids · 04/07/2013 15:12

emily changing days is fine, in fact one of the best things about this WOE as it's so easily adjustable, in fact often I think when people hit a plateau changing things whether it be days or when they eat or frequency of fasts can often help get things going again.

When I began last august i alwasy did tues and thurs, weirdly, as that was what Dr M did, but over time found that Mondays felt better as I'd then had fri, sat, sun, mon of NFD's and just felt it was too much, so now I usually do mondays and then either wed or thurs or sometimes a wed and then a half day. also it's great to change things around to suit your social/work calendar, often we have celebrations, events etc that require us to have a NFD when we're 'supposed' to be fasting, so just swap things, really isn't a problem.
