BetsyBell · 23/06/2013 15:54

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads:
most recent, one before that, another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnichts for putting together all the info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Hey everyone,
Hope you are all well. My 2nd fast for the week. I've had a fish and mushroom stirfry and this afternoon I had some frozen yogurt at the cinema. It was lovely.

My nfd was horrendous yesterday. I couldn't seem to stop eating even though I knew I wasn't hungry. Blush

My aim for the rest of the week is to eat meals & not graze.
Come on fasters we're nearly there!

mttum · 03/07/2013 20:35

squidgy, there are plenty of people more experienced and better qualified than me, but for what it's worth I've found the following useful:

  • eat well but not excessively; you know what are good foods so base the day around them, but allow for a treat or two Smile
  • don't have any snacks between your meals; they really add up. If you must snack, try for something healthy (at least half of the time Wink)
  • drink plenty of water, tea, etc; it's easy to think we are hungry when in fact we are thirsty.
And very importantly, don't obsess about it , enjoy it, and if you screw up don't give up; remember this is a long term thing and we all make mistakes along the way. The important thing is to keep going with it.

Oh, and well done on the first day!! (Cheers all round Grin)

babysaurus · 03/07/2013 20:41

Hi everyone, well I intended to fast today but also wasn't going to kick myself if I caved as I can do it properly tomorrow. Hence, I've been pretty good - had about 500 cals all day I reckon - but now want to have dinner and a glass of wine, so I will and then be properly good tomorrow. That won't screw things up too much will it...?

Southeastdweller · 03/07/2013 20:51

squidgy The important thing I can recommend on your first ever NFD is originally from Mimi in the book - that is, to trust your body to say 'when'.

mehefin · 03/07/2013 21:01

Whoops thanks to Dotty for the curried baked beans !

mttum · 03/07/2013 21:09

Would anyone be my friend on MFP? Feel like I could do with a bit of support over there too.
)
Please pm if yes (even tho I don't know how that works Confused

Dotty342kids · 03/07/2013 21:10

no problem mehefin, glad they were a winner. Will go and post on recipe thread now! Smile

MissUnicorn · 03/07/2013 21:34

I'm not sure either how to pm mttum. I'm LibraVixen on mfp.

You should be fine baby, enjoy your dinner & wine. I'm Envy

postmanpatscat · 03/07/2013 21:44

Evening all sounding more like policeman than postman

Happy holidays saf sunshine is sure to help your recovery!

Well done to new fasters this week, too many to mention but it's always good to hear that 5:2 is working for so many people. I haven't fasted this week, but did skip breakfast and then have fruit/yogurt for lunch after too many days of dipping my hand in the staffroom biscuit barrel. A bit of self control was needed.

mttum have PMd you, hope you can work it out!

Southeastdweller · 03/07/2013 21:52

How was your meal at The Gate postman? I'd love to go but going to and from west London is a faff and a half...but I hear it's great.

Talkinpeace · 03/07/2013 21:59

squidgy
in the long run you will find that fast days generally work best if you try not to eat at all until as late in the day as you can (I go for 7pm) and then eat the whole 500 calories in one gut busting lump and then sleep well

not fasting that much at the moment : well mini fasts but not the 500 cal bit : as getting back into the gym so TDEE has just risen by 400 calories a day !

postmanpatscat · 03/07/2013 22:03

southeast still haven't been - DP was away for two weeks, got back late last Sunday and our feet have hardly touched the ground since. We are going to see Michael Buble at the O2 on Friday though!

I think he owes me even more now that I've not only run a sub-30 5k, but also 10.5 miles/17k non-stop which is even further than he has run Grin

SquidgyMummy · 03/07/2013 22:10

Thanks for the replies
mttum yes will try not to snack - so many mindless calories wasted on a pain au raisin or bag of crisps!

southeastdweller does mimi's advice about when mean when to start eating or to stop

talkinpeace ISWYM about eating later. The morning flew by and i had only eaten a carrot some strawberries and herbal tea. It was only when i started to eat something a bit more substantial that i really felt hungry!

Southeastdweller · 03/07/2013 22:36

Hi squidgy She means when to stop.

Itsaboatjack · 03/07/2013 23:31

Yay, fast day finished. My word today has been a loong day. It was a long day anyway but with fasting on top it was a really really loong day. I'm really hungry now too but I know I won't crack now.

Night all

Have a good holiday saf

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 04/07/2013 02:00

NFD today here (and weigh-in day. I lost a pound!) and it's 10.30am and I haven't had breakfast yet. Because I don't know what to eat.

I know I should be scrambling an egg and eating it on some wholewheat toast with some wilted spinach and toasted sesame seeds, or whatever. But mornings are total chaos around here, and neither of my children are particularly willing to let me cook without whining/tripping me up/wanting things urgently, so I tend to get to work having not eaten. Or on days at home with them, I grab a cereal bar at 9. Or maybe make some toast. Awful simple carby things that do nothing to keep me full, and aren't what I really want either.

I really need to plan more, because I'm sick of eating things I don't really want just because they're easy. I don't feel like I can implement TIPs no snacking plan, because at days at home with the girls the chances of sitting down for a proper filling lunch that'll get me through to dinner makes me laugh. I can't be the only one struggling with how to eat balanced meals with little kids around, can I?

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 04/07/2013 02:03

And on work days, what do I buy to eat? It's cold, I don't want yoghurt. A bacon sandwich isn't exactly nutritious. Is there such a thing as a hot, low-fat, protein breakfast out there without sitting in a restaurant with a poached egg?

SquidgyMummy · 04/07/2013 06:38

Tortoiseonthehalfshell could you take something hot into work in a food flask, such as chunky vegetable soup?
Or if it needs to be breakfast, some porridge?

Well first NFD here and by some miracle I have lost 4lbs of water and what was in my gut Motivational though.

Have tried to be a but thoughtful about breakfast and was going to have some nice muesli but read the calories on the side and it was 445 per 100g; that must be about the same as a mars bar!!

So had some ham and cheese on toast, as that was what i fancied, although just had one slice instead of 2, whilst waiting, was stuffing my face with another slice of ham, as it was naice!

So when to do the next fast day? Tomorrow, or wait till Monday?!!

peplum41 · 04/07/2013 06:45

Hitortoise, is it mid afternoon there? You do sound stressed! Hope someone can offer some decent advice. I don't have kids, wanted but unable, so my advice would probably be laughable and ignorant. I can only think a boiled egg as a grab and go, a few mouthfuls of baked beans? Wholegrain rice cake with a scrape of marmite rather than sugary bar? I mean well!

Well done on losing the pound!

Hi mehefin thanks for mentioning the Dr M programme on the 10th. Looks interesting. I keep seeing a trailer for something about Ramadan on channel 4, think its this Monday. Assume fasting will factor in this. Have to keep the tv at work on mute because it buzzes so loud I can't hear what's going on in the rest of the house.

angie2, I start my fast on a night shift, give the house a good clean when I get in, too tired to care about being hungry go to bed about 11, up again around 4, weirdly not starving, eat my 500 at 7 ish then back to bed about 11. Fast in the bag, dead easy.

babysaurus · 04/07/2013 07:26

Am on a fast day today. DH came home with a bottle of Laurent Perrier champagne but its gone sensibly in the fridge for tomorrow.
Wish me luck! (Should be fine, feel quite positive.) good luck too to all the other fasters today x

BsshBossh · 04/07/2013 07:32

Morning all. FD for me too. As it's Thursday, I bet there are quite a few of us today.

I have a busy day planned - usually I am sitting at my desk all day working (venturing out to the gym and to do school run only) but today DH has the morning off so we can go to Ikea and Homebase to buy shelves and sundries for our new kitchen (which is shaping up so nicely!). So I will be kept busy today and won't get much of a chance to think about food.

Good luck fellow fasters.

Prawntoast · 04/07/2013 07:35

Fast day for me too, hope its easier than Tuesday, will be very busy at work though so should take mind off it.

SoTiredAgain · 04/07/2013 07:42

tortoise. What about porridge for breakfast? Measure portion out night before and in the morning, just bung it in the microwave with water/milk and add fruit and nuts?

What about warming soup for lunch in a flask? Do you have a microwave at work? What about leftovers?

Itsaboatjack · 04/07/2013 08:00

tortoise I was also going to suggest boiling some eggs in advance so you are able to grab and go, maybe with a slice of ham?

How old are your children? Mine are 8 and 3 so are able to manage on their own while I take time to prepare food, but tbh i don't really remember a time when I couldn't, even if it meant just putting them in front the tv for half an hour while i got dinner ready. What do you make them for lunch when at home?

I did have a sneaky look at the scales this morning and am back in the 10s so happy with that, even if it was a post fast WI.

NFD here and I promised the dc we could have chip shop fish and chips for dinner, so I'm looking forward to that later. I'll just get two portions of chips between 5 of us though and then add some salad so it shouldn't completely blow the cals out for the day.

BsshBossh · 04/07/2013 08:02

Whoops. Change of plan. DH has announced he'd like to have lunch at Ikea. I haven't had meatballs and chips there in ages so who am I to argue Grin. FD shifted to tomorrow (which means a Saturday morning weigh in now).
