Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 Thread number 22! Put down that biscuit - you can eat it tomorrow

BetsyBell · 23/06/2013 15:54

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads:
most recent, one before that, another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnichts for putting together all the info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Dotty, coincidentally I had steamed fish for dinner, just white fish with asparagus and broccolini in a garlic/soy/mirin sauce, and I just wrap in foil and bake. No water in tray but it definitely comes out steamed not baked. I do for twenty minutes at 180c, each fillet wrapped separately, about 100-120g per fillet.

Today was such a struggle. No idea why, its not TOTM or anything. I went to 600 cals, all sensible (small chicken and lentil broth with veg, followed by steamed fish) and still starving! Had two huge mugs of chamomile tea this evening and off to bed now.

quick stamp of feet from me - i'm all fat and bloaty and bleurgh and going on holiday tomorrow. rationally 80% of it will be my period due but still - feet are stamping.

in other weight news trying to pack to a miniscule weight allowance is harrowing stuff. i keep going back through and going well i don't really need that many dresses, oh i suppose i could do one less skirt, i don't really need these t-shirts and i can buy shampoo there etc. serves me right for being a skinflint who won't buy hold space at £20pp per way. it's a bit like a mensa challenge.

hope everyone's ok. i'm rubbish at this stuff at the minute. was intending to do 20/4 today but have just opened a beer to deal with the packing traumas. sod it. been lots of stress and i will get back on the bus when i come home. i'm hoping that the ridiculous heat will see me losing weight over there anyway. it usually does but i usually stay much longer so don't know whether two weeks will make it happen.

Breadandwine · 03/07/2013 13:39

tryinghard2 I've been on the scales this morning - after 10 days away, which is why I couldn't give you a proper answer earlier.

I'm not sure, now, just what I did, and now it's complicated by my gaining about 5lbs (I think). I've been between 9.1 and 9.4 on my old scales, and now they're showing 9.7. On the digital scales I'm 9.9. So that's only a discrepancy of 2lbs.

Have you managed to check yours against Boots or the docs, yet?

I've definitely put on weight around my waist, since I'm nudging up to the last notch on my belt, whereas generally I have an inch or two to spare.

I need to take more notice of my belt than the scales, of course, but I still intend to get back to - let's call it 9.4. Confused

I'll do a couple of mini-fasts, and a

akarucker · 03/07/2013 14:03

saf have a great time. You deserve a nice break. Eat & drink what you like, then come back and climb back on with the rest of us Smile

swallowedAfly · 03/07/2013 14:05

would have been nice to have a flat tummy in my bikini aka but in the grand scale i'm sure i'll survive. see you on the other side and good luck in the interim.

Talkinpeace · 03/07/2013 14:10

saf
I weight under 9 stone with a bmi of under 21 and do not have a flat tummy.
Stand up tall, smile and you'll look and feel amazing Grin

Cat98 · 03/07/2013 14:21

Ah thanks for the nice comments! The thing is, I'm a shorty, and carry weight in such a way that just a few lbs either way shows and people notice. So even though it doesn't sound like much it makes a big difference to the way I feel :)

Saf in sure you'll look fab and the bloating will settle down. Eagle I think it (bmi) varies so much doesn't it from person to person depending on build, didnt think of that!

frenchfancy · 03/07/2013 14:36

Have a great holiday SAF

Fasting today instead of my usual Thursday as I'm off to Ikea tomorrow and I love their meatballs (they better have them, last time I went they were off the menu due to the horse meat scandal Angry )

Just made biscuits for the girls (I'm supposed to be working but get distracted easily). I was very good and didn't even taste a crumb, as I know form bitter experience that once I taste I can't stop. So I shall save myself a biscuit for tomorrow.

AngieM2 · 03/07/2013 15:11

Mehefin thanks for the 'nights' advice....so you fast from when you get up before you start your first night then from midnight on that first one you start a NFD? I could probably handle that...but second that no way could I fast at work, would probably collapse in front of a patient (at least I'd be in the right place for medical attention!)
Itsaboat - took your advice about food choices and had a boiled egg and warburtons thin instead of fruit. Have changed my soup at tea time to homemade butternut squash, soft cheese and red pepper (a great WW recipe)
So far it's going well, had a beasting of a workout at the gym this morning (knocked the hunger right off) but have cancelled tonight's class in case I'm in a foul mood (likely). My calories for the day are coming in at 362 but think a banana is on the cards to be added to that
PS sorry, can't figure how to get names to be bold - have put them in asterics but not working

mehefin · 03/07/2013 16:38

Angie
I was worried if I was making sense ! really should sleep first and post later.

I usually work Monday and Tuesday night. I eat about 7pm on Sunday then nothing til about 3pm on Monday when I have a light meal before getting a couple of hours kip. Eat again about 1am.

This has been trial and error to find what works best but I now find I recover from the nights a good 6 hours earlier than before.

I then do 2 low calorie fasts later in the week, have lost 21lbs in 5 months but I am not a calorie counter and am happy with slow steady weight loss. The long term health benefits are the most important thing for me especially possible links with dementia

Sounds like your day is going well

mumofcrazynamedkids · 03/07/2013 16:47

mid afternoon hunger pangs had me wanting a biscuit, only had 190 cals so far, so considered a fruit oatkcake at 45 cals, but made a lovely cup of earl grey with milk and now the pangs have abated.

going on a retail therapy trip at westfield after work as child free, before home to pack for the weekend, so that should distract me from eating for a bit longer. might indulge in a waitrose.M&S calorie counted ready meal for convenience tonight.

mttum · 03/07/2013 17:23

What's everyone having for tea? (Dinner for the posh ones)

SoTiredAgain · 03/07/2013 17:32

Just had soup and a bit of chocolate. Still have 299 calories to play with. Guacamole, cheese and oatcakes in front of apprentice tonight!

EagleRiderDirk · 03/07/2013 18:09

sotired I love what you can fit into a fast day if you're crafty enough!

mttum Fajitas for us tonight, though it is an NFD.

JB30 · 03/07/2013 18:16

Pasta and garlic bread for my dinner - it was not bad.
Finally fixed mfp to maintain rate, apparently I can eat 1900 a day at that without gaining. We shall see, I'm a bit sceptical but hopeful Wink
Am on a 16:8 after scandalous 3 course meal out last night, good choice til dessert, profiteroles with choc sauce & ice cream! Feel like I had a ball of lead on my belly for hours.

I love ikea meatballs too ff - I'd eat them horse meat or not, they could have sent their stock my way, I'd have made room in my freezer!
FD tomorrow, slight dread, dunno why, it's my 16th I think. Seeing a few nsv's last few days in my clothes, subtle yet significant enough. Worried I'm going to self sabotage as i usually do when i see results, and also keeping away from scales is making me anxious I'll have a gain on Friday. I'd have weeks like that where I'd be convinced I'd done great only to have gained a pound, cue depression and binge.
Gotta to work on my thinking, still in diet mode, grrr

SoTiredAgain · 03/07/2013 18:26

Eek! I have a bit of a dilemma.

My second fast day is planned for friday but I've just had a text saying that the end of term bring lunch and share has been brought forward to this Friday and they would like me to join in (usually I turn up for work just before afternoon session starts on fds). What to do? It's a really nice sociable thing.

I did a 16:8 on Monday, fd today. I suppose I can do a 16:8 tomorrow as well and on Friday to make up for lack of doing a fast on Friday. Not sure though.

mehefin · 03/07/2013 18:46

That sounds fine SoTired and it's that kind of thinking which will keep the weight off long term. Enjoy your lunch event.

Just had curried baked beans here - thanks Bssh a very happy teenager in the house

Cat98 · 03/07/2013 18:53

Wow chocolate on a fast day! Kudos for that one!

Nfd here - just had a lovely and hopefully vitamin packed dinner of paprika chicken, brown rice, cheesy vegetable gratin and sweetcorn. Oh and a large glass of wine! (Sorry fasters!)
Will have strawberries later in front of the apprentice, and then fd tomorrow :)

SoTiredAgain · 03/07/2013 18:59

Cat I have a small piece of dark, dark chocolate, tbh. I eat chocolate everyday: for the iron. Wink

SoTiredAgain · 03/07/2013 19:18

Can finally relax! (Go Murray) Grin

SquidgyMummy · 03/07/2013 19:19

Just did my first ever fast day today - couple of hours to fill before bedtime whilst fantasising about raiding the biscuit tin

Have had some very nice food today, lots of strawberries, a bit of smoked salmon and scrambled eggs, roasted peppers. It's just the tiny quantities are making my stomach feel like it's imploding!

Well tomorrow, I don't want to go mad and eat a family sized bag of crisps washed down with coke so will try and just watch my portions, i guess.

Any tips on the day after fasting from those experienced 5:2?ers

headintheclouds · 03/07/2013 19:27

same here so tired ,he was not impressed with that 'hairdrier' comment was he though! sorry for tennis hijack!

BsshBossh · 03/07/2013 19:37

mehefin the curried beans was from Dotty but thanks anyway Grin

mttum · 03/07/2013 20:11

Mmmm, forgot about the curried beans! Is it on the recipe thread??

Just got back from a bike ride with DD and brownies and about to have a made up concoction with tofu, tomatoes spinach and onions, among other things. Less than 600 cals and it's not even a fast day! Think I'd better have a glass of wine and some chocolate as well (sorry fasters, but you can do it tomorrow Smile

Southeastdweller · 03/07/2013 20:21

Have a fab holiday saf!

Well I'm having a homemade veggie curry for my dinner and thoroughly enjoying it. Some lovely Green and Blacks currant and hazelnut chocolate coming up later too.
