Horrific start to fasting - vomiting all night?! Coincidence?

I did my first fast day yesterday and was fine, just had a couple of coffees in the morning then water through the day until having salmon and salad and a couple of poached eggs for a meal total of 495 cals. Felt a bit hungry during the day but not too bad. Got to sleep ok and then woke up at 2.30 feeling really shaky, hot and cold, heart pounding. Thought it was low blood sugar so tried a small glass of milk to see if that would see me through till this morning (didn't want to fall at first hurdle but felt HORRIFIC) that didn't help so drank an actimel (which I know have lots of sugar in) and then about half an hour later was vomiting. I started panicking that it was low blood sugar causing me to vomit so I ate 3 Bourbon biscuits ( Blush ) and felt a wee bit better and got back to sleep for an hour then woke up again at 5 feeling the same low blood sugar way and was sick again.

Anyway - sorry for the rambling unburdening! Was it something I ate? (My salad bowl thing from morrisons was a day out of date and a bit 'inflated' looking but tasted fine..) or did I have a really extreme blood sugar reaction to fasting?

I felt really enthusiastic about this WOE but this has seriously freaked me out. There is no way I can feel like that 2 nights a week. Has this happened to anyone else?

For info my TDEE is 1960 according to that fit girls site and I am breastfeeding a year old ( so has 3 meals of solids a day - not reliant on milk, although we cosleep and he feeds a few times at night.)

Phew. An epic. Thanks in advance for any light you can shed.

God I'm such a drama queen, I wasn't vomiting ALL night, I was sick though.

Sounds like a vomiting virus. Only way to know is to try a fast again once you feel better. You ate later in the day so I suspect this wasn't a drop in blood sugar.

In my very in unmedical opinion, could it be the low calorie + low carb? Next time try to have some sweet fruit in there for carb quota...

Crunchymunchyhoneycakes · 08/06/2013 10:28

I wonder if it was the low carb-ness of it? I am quite sugar sensitive and probably eat a fair amount of carbs normally. I've got the mm book ill go back and have another read.

I tried IF twice, once about a year or so ago while still bf a toddler, I stopped because I woke feeling really ill and shaky (but not physically ill) . MM reccomends low carb on fast days I think so doubt it is that? How are you now?

I'm not going to say it's impossible, because I'm not a medical professional. However, it's the first time I've read about someone vomiting with regard to fasting, and I've been doing this/ stalking the main thread since August last year.

So, anything is possible, but I'd look to the more obvious solution: you had a pre-prepared salad which was over the date and the package was inflated a bit. It had probably gone off. Was the salmon in that, as well?

If you are worried that it might be a blood sugar issue, and not the salad, I'd suggest talking to your GP. We've had a lot of people mention light-headedness and fatigue on their first fast or two, but I truly can't recall anyone being sick from it. Good luck!

Sounds to me like food poisonning. I thibk someone else a while back had the same thing on their first fast, but concluded it was coincidence.

Crunchymunchyhoneycakes · 10/06/2013 09:53

I've concluded it was the salad and am on my second fast day today. Just in case it was the lack of carbs I have incorporated 50g of cous cous into my dinner/only meal. I was quite alright not eating till the evening last time so I have saved all my calories for my meal tonight after work. Having cous cous, chicken breast, and roast veg.

Wish me luck! And thanks for replies, will join the main thread soon.

As long as I don't end up vomiting all night again! Ho ho ho!

Op, I tried fasting a while ago and the exact same thing happened to me! Could have also been caused by some other coincidental other factor but was seriously grim at the time and has left me afraid to try again (really liked the concept of the 5:2 approach).

Cooroo · 11/06/2013 07:33

This is the first time i've heard of vomiting, and I've been hanging out on FB group for months. Constipation, insomnia... but no vomiting! I think it was the salad. It just doesn't make sense that putting less inside you would cause you to lose it.

Crunchymunchyhoneycakes · 11/06/2013 09:11

I have definitely drawn the conclusion that it was the salad - did my second fast yesterday and felt amazing. Was awake during the night with baby and felt absolutely fine, just maybe a tiny bit peckish! I have also lost weight already and am SO glad I gave it another chance.

I had the meal I described above then had an apple at bedtime after being out for the evening. Was working during the day and felt GREAT, kind of buzzing, sharp and alert and sort of fast if that makes sense. Totally enthused about the whole WOE.
