BetsyBell · 04/06/2013 09:04

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Morning all,

Congrats to eagle and well done to anna for not giving up during that six week plateau - that's seriously inspiring.

Best ever week for me - 4 and a half pounds off so my total is now 26 and a half pounds since the end of Jan. I did 4:3 this week (have done seven weeks of this).

I don't know what will happen next week though as I'm making a banana bread pudding today on my day off...I suppose I shouldn't overthink these things - I've done well so far eating and drinking plenty of treats. I just love how easy this WOL is Smile

Enjoy your weekends everyone.

Prawntoast · 07/06/2013 07:41

eagle well done! going from obese to overweight on your BMI is alot to shout about.

A whole 200gs down for me this week but still down and takes me just under 9.12 so I'm happy.
Have a good weekend everyone.

Prawntoast · 07/06/2013 07:43

south just seen your post, 4.5lbs, wow am seriously impressed.

headintheclouds · 07/06/2013 07:50

This may be a long post. WI today and once again I have PUT ON weight, up by 1 lb . I have been doing this WOE since End January so about 18 weeks and have lost weight but very slowly, have had alot of stalls and since End of March have been travelling up and down the same 2 lbs between 10 5 and 10 st 7... Im getting a bit despondant now as every month it seems to be the same story. I have NEVER lost a lb per week .
Im 5 ft 3 started at 11st 3 and now 10 st 7. Im doing 5:2 and fast for 24 hrs before having up to 500 cals in one evening meal( have worked my way up to that). My TDEE is 1800 cals and I do eat up to that on NFDs sometimes go a bit over with wine at weekends.
I exercise 1-2 times a week ,Im 49 yrs old..BMI 25.7
PLEASE can anyone who has lost a lb a week share how they did it. I keep reading how some people have started this in Feb and lost over a stone already.. I wont give up because I do enjoy it and obviously have lost a bit but im getting really quite peed off with it now.
I do not .'cheat' on this WOE and i track everything on MFP . When you read MMs book its supposed to be so easy and I shouldnt have to count everything on the other 5 days..It is easy but Im not getting the results I expected..10 weeks to my holiday and Ive had to re- adjust my goal again!! I was hoping that Id be another 10 lbs off by then Sad.
Has any of you long termers TiP laska et al had any experience of this...reading through the threads ( and believe me I have!,!) you all seemed to make it appear so easy.
sorry for the long and whingy post..strop over now

AnnaPrentice63 · 07/06/2013 08:18

HeadITC don't lose sight of the fact that you are losing.

Have you recalculated your TDEE as you lose? To lose a pound a week you need a deficit of about 3,000 calories. Your two fasting days would give you a 2,600 deficit but if you're a bit over with wine this would be less.

I use my TDEE as if I don't excercise and "bank" the extra calories for weekend wine.

Dotty342kids · 07/06/2013 08:19

Aw headintheclouds don't despair! I started just after you, in mid Feb and have only lost 12lbs so quite similar to you. I've had lots of plateaux, lots of gains and losses but overall my clothes fit / are loose and I look and feel soooo much better. I think you have to focus on those positives when you're feeling down about it all.

I do hope the more long termers can pop along and help you soon though Smile

BetsyBell · 07/06/2013 08:28

HitC Have you tried going 10% under your tdee on weekdays so that you've got extra for the weekend? At the moment you're going over your tdee with the wine and therefore the calorie deficit via the fast days is reduced. You have lost more than half a pound a week overall which is still a decent result. Don't eat back your exercise calories and maybe step that up a bit - as you get fitter the same level of exercise has less impact.

[gets out pom poms] Whoooop! Goooo ERD Goooo SED Grin

Right, I need to get back on track, 2 good fast days this week has seen off the damage of the weekend but I need to step that exercise back up. Going to try and get all my rushing around jobs done this morning (involves lots of cycling) so I've got no excuse not to go for a run tomorrow morning.

quick post.

eagle that is fantastic! well done you and keep going! you've done your health such a huge favour already.

thanks for all the well wishes -am off soon. might get a chance to post on sunday.

plecofjustice · 07/06/2013 09:33

OK, this makes NOOO sense at all. Did my fasts Mon and Wed, weighed yesterday as usual - 2lb down, great. Weighted today - another 3lb down. How?? Same scales, same clothes (wii fit, so calibrated), makes no sense!?!?

monster54 · 07/06/2013 09:45

Well not amazing but I'm back this morning to my last lowest point which I saw about 3 weeks ago.

I definitely think I need to be a bit stricter on NFD's during the week. Hopefully onwards to see a new low next week now I have seemed to have worked something out!

hic have you tried cutting you tdee a but in the week just to create a bit more deficit? I know it sounds miserable but I don't think it's as easy for some as it is others.

somewherebecomingrain · 07/06/2013 09:48

First week. First fast was
Monday. Nothing changed. Then today as i begin second fasr 3lb lighter.

Congrats to eagle and others who've
Lost its v inspiring.

Re head in clouds this is all
About the plasticity of the metabolism - it's dynamic, it changes. But I suspect not every metabolism is the same it's like any medicine - different blood groups etc. you need to play around till you get what works for you. The suggestions others have made are good. Havi g said that it is working for you just slowly.

Xx

Moominlandmidwinter · 07/06/2013 09:59

Hello to all, saf, thinking of you today, hope it all goes well.

A bit of a bragging post, I'm afraid, have got a new low today of 9st 2.75lb. Even better than that, I dug my pre-DD4 clothes out yesterday (have spent the last 8 months in stretchy leggings and tunics), and everything fits. I am going back to work a week on Monday, and my aim had been to fit into my old work clothes, rather than having to buy any new ones. I could even get into the size 8s, although they were a bit snug. One pair of size 10 trousers were too big (I blame vanity sizing!). I'm going to start thinking about maintenance soon, once I get rid of the last couple of pounds and reach 9 stone.

I know that I wasn't overweight to start with, but I am feeling so much better about myself now. I have also got bags more energy, and have knocked my disordered way of eating on the head. Other 'diets' have only made it worse. I have also come to realise that 2000kcal is not the amount of calories that every woman needs per day! I was quite shocked to realise that my TDEE is only 1660. No wonder that my weight had gradually been creeping up over the years, without me realising that I had been over-eating.

TonytheFish · 07/06/2013 10:49

Hey all.

I am wondering, if I can manage it, on FD I will, other than water and the odd cup of tea, actually fast, and not even have my 500 calories.

Maybe not every fast day, but I am bumping up to 4:3 and maybe 1 fd out of the 3? Does anyone not eat at all on a FD?

alwaysanauntie · 07/06/2013 11:08

Quick post as at work, hitc the only thing i can think of is your tdee seems quite high. I'm 33 yo, 5'5" 11 stone, have sedentary job although i walk 2-4 miles a day (which i exclude from tdee and mfp so it's a bonus) and my tdee is 1790. Unless you are very active in daytime might be worth recalculating or excluding exercise so you don't eat the calories back? Although ive only recently started, have lost about 6 lbs, so seems to be working for me (hoping i don't hit dreaded plateau next week!). Good luck!

MelanieCheeks · 07/06/2013 12:00

saf sending healing vibes....

eagle that's fantastic, well done! And well done all you other losers Smile

hitc my stats are similarish to yours - 5'2, started in January at about 143 pounds (it was 147 at Christmas). Loss has been on average about 0.5 pounds a week, but some weeks not much loss at all. I really noticed a difference when I ramped up my exercise - I've got my first half-marathon in less than 2 weeks, so I'm currently running 4 times a week (and I dont eat back exercise cals). I found that combination helped to get me under the holy grail of a bmi under 25.

Maybe this is cheating, but I only record my weight if it goes down. So I don't look at weekly or daily fluctuations, I'm just focused on a long term trend.

fastyspeedyfast · 07/06/2013 12:15

Another easy fast day yesterday. The headaches seem to have disappeared on FDs now, and I feel more energetic.

HITC, I'm losing about half a pound/week. I agree with melaniecheeks - I think you should increase your exercise rather than decreasing your food. Muscle loss is always a big issue with dieting, and probably even more so with this one. Can you factor in some more walking, or gym time, or anything particular you enjoy? For all the hype about the supposed health benefits of 5:2, the health benefits of exercise have long been proven.

It might help to shift your goals? Rather than hoping to shift X amount of weight in Y amount of time, maybe you could say: my goal is to stick to my FDs. My goal is to walk 5 more miles a week. Or whatever. Just take your mind off it! You'll weigh whatever you weigh on your holiday and it will still be fun.

You have lost weight. You're doing really well. I really think that people losing a stone in 12 days or whatever are the minority!! I mean, I'm happy for them, but it ain't ever gonna happen to me. Smile

fastyspeedyfast · 07/06/2013 12:17

And eagle how amazing! That's great news.

Cooroo · 07/06/2013 12:54

Just popping in to say hello! I've been on 5:2 since last November, lost about 8lbs but I haven't that much to lose, so I'm happy with that, hoping to drop a few more eventually!

My DP and I are doing this primarily so we can live longer and healthier!

Been hanging out on mumsnet a few months but not explored this section before - nice to have a new source of support and inspiration. I need to look at My Fitness Pal - I've been using Nutracheck which is pretty good but costs money... Is MFP easy to use? I like the facility on NC to add meals, fave foods etc.

Good to meet you all!

peplum41 · 07/06/2013 15:49

Hi all,

hello cooroo, glad you've found us, especially as you've been doing 5:2 since November. Your experience will be much appreciated. Mfp is great, if you've got a phone app you can scan barcodes on packets and log on the go. It does remember what you've eaten previously, also takes account of your TDEE if you set it to maintenance mode, and ignore its stern warning that you're not eating enough on your fast days! If you've already paid for nutracheck though...

tonythefish I look forward to my precious 500 cals all the live long day! But, if you wish, you go ahead and fast hardcore style. The idea is to make it something people want to do week in week out. I don't think I could fast twice a week if I didn't eat at all twice a week. Would feel a bit restricted, plus enjoy dreaming up different concoctions for 500 cals.

twinmama32 HITC monster54we are all on the same boat. I dont know whether Im stuck on a plateau, eating too much,or not active enough. But, taking on the advice... and getting lots of NSVs with clothes. Liked your post, Annaprentice, especially as you just kept going on 5:2 and the plateau finally moved without other interventions, like 4:3 etc.

chocupid how are you recovering from your op? Are you managing to fast?

peplum41 · 07/06/2013 15:52

Oh BTW, decided to just 6:1 this week because the weather is nice, Im off work and the two rarely combine so whiteWine and crisps are whats required. Enjoy your weekends.Smile

Breadandwine · 07/06/2013 16:07

I am wondering, if I can manage it, on FD I will, other than water and the odd cup of tea, actually fast, and not even have my 500 calories.

Tonythefish come and join the 36-hour liquid fasters currently on this thread on the 52fastdiet forum. There's a whole gang of fasters on there finding this a good variation on 5:2.

TonytheFish · 07/06/2013 16:28

Breadandwine Tyvm, off to check it out now.

monster54 · 07/06/2013 17:48

Thanks pendulm I most definitely need to just relax a bit. But I can't help but over analysis everything I'm eating etc.

I do think i need to watch my NFD's and more so during the week to allow for a little indulgence at the weekend!

EagleRiderDirk · 07/06/2013 17:56

Thanks for the congrats all.

I'm not checking the scales tomorrow as I will probably have bounced up again! Today I planned a blowout and refused to mfp until I'd done the damage and it was too late. With dinner fully planned, and some Wine of course, my 'blowout' only comes to 700 (well 500 less exercise) calories over and I really expected to see it being far worse. This may have something to do with me picking a healthy lunch when I didn't have to Confused and stopping eating when I felt full. This woe really changes you! I did have a ridiculous milkshake though which actually accounted for all those 700 calories (and some more) Blush

I hope saf is comfortable somewhere suddenly feeling a lot lighter

tony that's more than feasible if you can manage it. A few weeks ago I couldn't even dream of doing 4:3. I don't think I would like it every week, but I know now I can do it for a reward Grin
