The 5:2 Thread number 21! Soaking up the Sunshine

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

thanks dotty - had hoped that losing weight would have some impact but a stone and a half in and my boobs haven't lost any of their presence. apologies to those whose boobs disappear the minute they lose weight. we can never win Grin

Cupcakexprincessx · 06/06/2013 16:52

Thanks betsy

I can easily fast for the 16 hours most days. Is the idea that the body turns to fat for energy In those 16 hours or is it at 16 hours when it starts to burn the fat?

Thanks

Cupcakexprincessx · 06/06/2013 16:56

*postman i am also 5'4. If you dont mind me asking, at 8 stone 8 what clothes size are you now?

peplum41 · 06/06/2013 17:14

Hi all Smile

PoshVoice good point about the TDEE recalculation. I had done it, but realised that not as active recently, partly due to dog being a bit ill, he is the main source of exercise I get. I don't think he likes this heat either. I updated my profile on the 5:2 website( the one with Moogie and Bready's blog)and it gave me a TDEE update for a sedentary person a good few hundred cals lower than if I was lightly active. Yes, as TIP mentioned, I think I do need to err on the conservative side and aim for the lower TDEE. Still good intake, but not party every day intake! Grin

Angelabbie Most, if not all negative side effects from fasting disappear within a few weeks. A lot of bad side effects from having a poor diet generally also disappear. I barely slept for weeks, but was a ball of energy, initially. The insomnia now gone completely, out like a light. But sadly, that zippiness has also gone. Ive had acne for years, skin really clear now.

sotiredagain, glad your first day went well, familiar with low GI diet, but found it hard to stick to, so if you can do that, you can do this. Ditto, the above comment about your blood sugar issues.

frenchfancy · 06/06/2013 17:35

fingerbobs there is no rule about avoiding sugar, we just generally find that it makes us hungrier half an hour later (probably due to insulin spikes). I avoid sugar and carbs (including things like fruit) on fast days simply because it makes it easier to fast.

ELR · 06/06/2013 17:45

EagleRiderDirk · 06/06/2013 20:58

I managed it through the day fasting despite hangover, which I still maintain was more to do with the heavy sweating overnight than wine! Needed some added dioralyte today but actually feel so much better except tired. Glad I listened to my body asking for a detox. Now looking forward to a day of indulgence tomorrow and a repentant fast on Saturday.

Good luck for tomorrow again saf

doublecakeplease · 06/06/2013 22:04

Hi all - some fantastic advice here :-) 2nd fd today. Found it slightly harder that Tuesday but totally manageable so far. I ate dinner at 7pm last night. Some cucumber today @ 12 then dinner tonight of chicken breast and salad. Lots of water with lemon in has kept me going again.

I've roped in a few girls from work who've been thinking about doing it so will have some rl fasting friends come Monday!

Fingerbobs · 06/06/2013 22:26

Thanks Frenchfancy, I'm glad to hear that - have just scoffed half a (small) chocolate bar and stayed under 500 Grin

postmanpatscat · 06/06/2013 22:36

cupcake I'm mostly wearing a 10, many of which I bought when half a stone heavier but I can't keep shopping! Some items bought more recently are an 8, but I'm quite broad shouldered and often a 10 is more comfortable and flattering in both tops and bottoms. Depends on the shop though, doesn't it? H&M 10s are skin tight, Monsoon 10s need a belt or they fall off!

Cupcakexprincessx · 06/06/2013 23:22

Good Luck saf

postman yeah I know what you mean about sizing! Well done though.

Am a bit confused as someone I spoke to told me when doing the 16 hour fast milk in tea is not allowed as it defeats the object. But from others I have heard you can as long as its very low calorie! (thanks for reply whoever it was)

:) so will milk in tea hinder the weight loss??

fluffypillow · 06/06/2013 23:43

14th fast for me today, and it was pretty easy. I can't say I look forward to fast days yet, or enjoy them, but they are definitely getting easier to manage. I don't feel like I am watching the clock so much willing dinner time to come quicker Grin

Switched to black coffee this week, and am enjoying it more than I thought i would, so I will try to have it on NFDs too.

My weight loss has stalled now. I put on 1lb last week (no obvious reason), and lost it again this week. so I am back to the weight i was 2 weeks ago. I still have an overall loss of 11lb in 6 weeks though, so it's really positive. the scales were a little lower after Tuesdays fast, but I know they will probably bounce up again, so I will just wait until next week to see if I have lost anymore.

The main thing is, I am so happy with this woe, and couldn't imagine eating differently now. My clothes feel better, and lots of people have asked if I've lost weight, which is very encouraging.

cupcake I have been thinking about doing the 6:8 as well, along side the 5:2, as I usually eat my meals between 9 and 6 anyway, so it would only mean having breakfast an hour later. I wonder if it would help. Only one way to find out!

saf Good luck for tomorrow Thanks

Thanks to everyone who posts their success stories on here. It is really motivating for newbies like me Smile

Have a good day tomorrow everyone. Good luck to all the Friday fasters. I myself will be eating tomorrow...guilt free Grin

CrystalDeCanter · 07/06/2013 02:21

Good morning everyone.

Just checking in really having caught up with the thread. It's dd1s birthday today so am spending the day making cakes etc and will have delicious party tea blow out tonight. YAY!

Cupcake I drink milk in my tea during a fast - also have a skinny flat white, I think it's fine, just remember to count the calories as part of your 500.

I am feeling really pmt ish - quite ragey in fact Sad. Am hoping that a day of long walks, fresh air and cooking/cleaning will sort me out.

CrystalDeCanter · 07/06/2013 02:23

I meant to add that it was interesting to read above someone saying that this wol had helped their hormonal mood swings. I'm desperate to find something that helps mine. Anyone else noticed any effects?

AnnaPrentice63 · 07/06/2013 02:28

Hello all.

First time poster anywhere! I have found everyones insights really helpful whilst I've been following this WOE. Finally thought I had something to add.

Have been on 5:2 since beginning of Feb. Started at 80kgs (12st 8lb I think). Over last 18 weeks have lost 11kgs about 24lbs. Sounds great when put this way but lost 8kgs (10%) over first 10 weeks, nothing over next six weeks and then 3kgs over last two weeks. Happy to say have caught up with those under 11 stone.

In my six week plateau period I stuck to 5:2 and didn't vary fasting days at all and no change in exercise. So to those struggling through a plateau take heart.

Best wishes to all (esp saf today)

CrystalDeCanter · 07/06/2013 02:30

Hello and welcome to the thread Anna. Congratulations on the fab weight loss, and also well done on sticking with it through the dreaded stall. Really inspiring.

Hasywell · 07/06/2013 06:26

Morning all, just popping in to say best wishes to SAF for today Flowers.

frenchfancy · 07/06/2013 06:29

More best wishes for saf I bet you lose more weight today than anyone elseGrin

postmanpatscat · 07/06/2013 06:42

I think I'll fast today or at least wait til dinner before eating. I ate enough yesterday to last me a week. Gym tonight to burn some of it off and maybe meet my sub 30 min 5k goal too.

Any other Friday fasters out there?

Welcome Anna great results and determination

saf thinking of you today

EagleRiderDirk · 07/06/2013 06:53

mega bragging post

This morning is a morning of victories. I have now hit the 2 stone loss mark (30lbs actually), I'm in the 12s now (stones that is) and I am not longer obese, just merely overweight (which, yes, isn't much to shout about but its so nice to see BMI in the 20s).
