The 5:2 Thread number 21! Soaking up the Sunshine

BetsyBell · 04/06/2013 09:04

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

A quick question on behalf of a friend.
She has poly cystic ovaries and has been told to snack all her life.
Its dawned on her that the advice may have been carp.
She's just starting to stick to three meals a day and has cut out sugar Monday to Thursday.
She wants to build up to fasting as she has a MASSIVE genetic predisposition to diabetes.
Does anybody have any constructive / relevant / useful advice on reducing the pain of poly cystic with dieting / weight loss?

BetsyBell · 07/06/2013 20:07

melanie Just realised I forgot to say thanks for the fake pimms recipe - sounds lovely and finally I have a reason to buy angostura bitters Grin.

Hello to cooroo glad you found us :)

Right, have organised myself so that I really have no excuse not to go running tomorrow morning, I'm not even drinking tonight! Why is it that even though I know I will love it I'm reluctant to get going?

Betsy we are running tomorrow, 'K?

BetsyBell · 07/06/2013 21:21

melanie Yes miss. I am even sorting out my ipod running playlist which I've been meaning to do for ages :)

Thankyou so much to everyone who responded to my 'pity party' this morning- sorry for the big moan!
some really useful advice and Im taking it on board!
I was probably eating over my 'true' TDEE ! Ive recalculated as a couple of you suggested without including exercise , and its worked out at 1625 NOT 1800. So next week a new start of 1625 and Im going to ramp up the exercise ( have always been a reluctant exerciser who enjoys it once I get there!) . Ill report back in a month!
Tomorrow is my DDs first holy communion and confirmation, and then we're having a garden party afterwards for the family so lots of nice food and wine!
Have a good weekend all

SoTiredAgain · 07/06/2013 22:18

peplum41. Thanks for the welcome. Smile

Day two of fasting. I decided to not eat anything till dinner today. It was okay, the hunger came in waves - I just drank water.

I had the superhealthy salmon burger and salad followed by some choc Grin. I still have 100 calories left so going to have an oatcake before bed.

Endofmyfeather · 07/06/2013 23:26

TIP I have PCOS and have been fasting since February (lost 17lbs), and what I have noticed is that because my hormonal cycles are all over the place, so can my weightloss/water retention/appetite be all over the place, so tracking both of these and their relationship is interesting. It can make it feel like one step forwards, two step backwards every few weeks, but ultimately it's all a step in the right direction so definitely worth a try. My doctor has agreed that the more weight I lose, the more it will help my PCOS but although I have lost a good deal of weight now, very little of that has gone from my middle so far (which is very common with PCOS). Your friend should definitely give it a go - I know there has been things said about the impact on fertility, but to be honest, being overweight with PCOS makes fertility very hard too. She should give it a few months and see how she feels.

Talkinpeace · 07/06/2013 23:29

Endofmyfeather
thank you for that - she's only 21 but is in visible pain for two weeks a month so something has to change.
Your post will reassure both of us : I'm her nagging buddy!

Endofmyfeather · 07/06/2013 23:53

I can understand that. From a long while monitoring my cycles (as much as I can when they're all over the place), I think I've got it roughly pinned down to about a 3-4 month 'cycle' of pain points, erratic emotions and out-of-the ordinary eating. And even though there is time between them, they're still so inter-linked, it's crazy. At least now, when the eating phase comes around, I'm ready for it and definitely feel more in control. I wish your friend good luck, and she can absolutely feel free to pm me if she needs support.

peplum41 · 08/06/2013 08:51

Morning
sotiredagain your sleepy little name reminds me that I used to need afternoon naps, and when I used to work days, at 3pm would really "hit the wall" at that time. But that seems to no longer be the case, another 5:2 benefit, I suspect. Well done for getting to tea time on 2nd fast.

There are so many benefits to this WOL, that even though Ive come to realise my TDEE is going to be a little restrictive at 1670 (compared to what I thought I could get away with), Im sticking with it. Smile

Talkin, I thought I had every PCOS symptom there was, but had forgotten about the ovary pain as not had that for years! It is very painful, but maybe its just something I grew out of. Not much comfort to her now, I know. You get a lot of insulin issues with PCOS, which somehow relates to testosterone causing the acne, facial hair, mid section weight gain, type 2 diabetes.
Fasting has cured the acne, facial hair remains, mood swings caused by blood sugar dips greatly improved, periods regulated. Only 3 months in, but Im convinced fasting is the answer, rather than the grazing approach.

postmanpatscat · 08/06/2013 09:15

Morning all

Ended up not fasting yesterday but didn't eat til 12.30 and then didn't eat much in general. Went to the gym last night and smashed my sub 30 mins 5k target and ran it in 29:30 :) On the way to Westfield now, where DP may find inspiration for the treat he promised me (since he admitted last night he has no idea what it might be!)

Enjoy the sunny Saturday everyone. Some great losses yesterday - I remember moomin and eagle and southeast so well done to you and to anyone I've missed.

Itsaboatjack · 08/06/2013 09:28

Betsy and Melanie hope you have good runs today. I really should have gone yesterday as I am not going to have time today. I am painting my bedroom though so that will burn some calories I'm sure.

I'm going to try and stick to 16.8 over the weekend, I need to get off this plateau and my holiday is creeping ever closer. I won't restrict what I eat but I reckon if I stick to a window I can at least restrict how much I eat.

SoTiredAgain · 08/06/2013 09:40

Welcome katedan. I am also new. Smile

It's been a week since I started the 5:2 and my weigh in this morning was 8 st 8lb, its a loss of 4 lbs in one week. However, yesterday was fast day so it's not accurate, I guess? I did weigh myself yesterday morning and my weight was 8 st 10lbs so I'm going to take that as the official figure, which gives me a loss of 2 lbs. I am more than happy with that.

I will change my official weigh in day as Friday from now on.

BetsyBell · 08/06/2013 10:20

melanie Run done Grin 30mins/5km plus 20mins squats, press ups and crunches just for good measure (and lots of stretches of course!).

Came back to house reeking of pancakes and last mouthful being eaten up - slightly Envy but now I get to polish my halo. And drink coffee.

OP posts:
BetsyBell · 08/06/2013 10:25

itsa Painting = lots of arm toning - bingo wings begone! (I'm sure you don't have bingo wings, I just wanted to say that Grin).

Ooh, I'm very pleased with 5km even though that includes warm up/cool down walking - didn't think I'd done that much at all. I did a different route today and worked it out on google maps as can't be bothered faffing around with/carrying iphone when running. Much prefer just to have a playlist on my little ipod.

Dotty342kids · 08/06/2013 15:09

AFternoon all! I have had some kind of weird tummy ache / pains since yesterday teatime. I had put it down to eating too large a slice of cake at the school summer fair but seeing as it's continued all day today, really don't think it can be that.
Have finally dragged myself out of bed and eaten a few grapes and can't see that I'm going to manage much tea, so today has inadvertently become a fast day. Probably no bad thing after coming back from hols on Weds and I can't do my normal Monday fast due to going out for dinner in the evening.
Hope you're all enjoying the sunshine Smile

MelanieCheeks · 08/06/2013 15:41

my blog featuring Mumsnet this week

Well done Betsy! I'd forgotten to charge my iPod, so I had to run without music. Added to the heat, it wasn't a better performance than last week, but still a respectable 28:44 for 5km. Pasta tonight, as I'm planning to run 12 miles tomorrow...

Chocupid · 08/06/2013 18:45

Hi peplum I'm doing ok thanks, but haven't fasted since my op 2weeks ago now, told by surgeon I need lots of protein to help with healing and I read somewhere (cant remember where) that your not supposed to fast after surgery.
If anyone can confirm or dismiss this I'd be grateful.
Did try last week but failed so may try again Monday.

Itsaboatjack · 08/06/2013 19:01

Ahh, painting finished, dh made dinner, large glass of red wine in hand then I may fall asleep in front of tv.

Off to the lido tomorrow with dc, fingers crossed the sun is still shining.

EagleRiderDirk · 08/06/2013 19:07

Managed a trip to tesco and to bake a low cal choccy cake on a fast day without caving! Am starving now though but got to wait till kids are in bed before I can even contemplate making dinner.

Am very looking forward to 2 days of eating before fasting again. Enjoyed my indulgence but think I far prefer 5:2 in general to 4:3.

alwaysanauntie · 08/06/2013 21:35

Well done everyone on continuing losses, eagle can you add you cake to the recipe thread. I currently have no oven (or kitchen for that matter, renovating house) but would love something to plan to bake in future that might not do as much damage as the 2 slices of tesco's finest choc indulgence cake I had at work yesterday Blush

At parents house today and mum did say I looked slimmer, huge NSV for me as she usually says "but you used to be so beautiful..."!

EagleRiderDirk · 08/06/2013 21:50

I'm still experimenting with it at mo, but I'll add the plain sponge up. Its yummy but not as yummy as a choc indulgence cake! However it is around 105 cals a large slice so definitely a boon.

I didn't believe that too, but put all the ingredients into mfp and it does come out about 101 for the plain sponge. Added a bit of cocoa and its great but not quite chocolatey enough. Didn't stop Dd and oh wolfing a load down though.

MelanieCheeks · 09/06/2013 07:23

Chocupid, thinking about the science behind 5:2 - fasting forces the body to fix its existing cells: eating (especially protein) is for making new cells (hence the "no fasting" rule for growing children and pregnant women). So I'd go with your surgeon - no fasting, and lots of protein. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

peplum41 · 09/06/2013 08:23

Flowers chocupid, I didn't realise it was so recent! Can you see a difference or is it all still swollen? Probably takes a while to settle down.

Yes eagle, that cakes sounds "fit" to quote friend's daughter when she spotted a Thorntons cake in Asda.

Bread&Wine thanks for the link to PCOS on the 5:2 forum. Love that site. Looked at your blog, see you originally hale from round our way! Eeh lad.
