The 5:2 Thread number 21! Soaking up the Sunshine

BetsyBell · 04/06/2013 09:04

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Good luck saf I will be thinking of you tomorrow.

FD here of me. Going to up the water still have a terrible fuzzy head.

I'm ridiculously hormonal with this TOTM, I don't know whats triggered that as in the 3 months of following this WOL I've felt my emotional energy has been really levelled out. This month I'm a mess.

Thanks postman I know has to shift soon enough, just feels like I've wasted an entire month. But I'm in this for the long term. Good luck with your target you will smash that next week.

I can't wait to hear what your treat is!!!

MelanieCheeks · 06/06/2013 10:34

Water in the muscles - when you do any kind of work that uses your muscles (lifting things especially), you cause small tears in the muscle tissue. Your body then holds on to water to repair those, and so you end up with stronger muscles.

Running and fasting I find is a great combination (hey, I'm a go-faster faster!). They both require mental strength more than anything else - you just have to get in the zone.

Fasting today, and have booked a mini-facial for lunchtime distraction. Must buy soda water to make fake Pimms this evening.

I like the idea of using 24-hour fasts during holdiays, even for just one day - say 2pm to 2pm incorporating a light evening meal (saladish), no breakfast, and a late lunch next day.

BetsyBell · 06/06/2013 10:40

Hello fingerbobs it might well be slow going for you as you don't have much to lose but this WOE will stop that weight creeping back on and will allow you to not feel much like you're on a diet - and of course there's a myriad of unseen health benefits!

Yes, running and any other exercise/moving about will help loads - get to it! Grin Being toned and trim is far better than trying to achieve skinny - it just doesn't look good after a certain age (speaking for myself there!)

Fasting here today - nearly caved but just drank 2 cups of coffee and feel a whole lot better.

piebaldrider Yes I can see it would be easy to fall off the wagon but I really do like to have the odd cheese and wine session and it this woe lets me do that guilt-free! Spurs me on Grin.

tortoise bad science alert - when you've been exerting your muscles they end up with tiny tears and then your body needs lots of fluid to repair them, hence the water retention. It's it the effective repair process that makes your muscles big/stronger/fitter and why you shouldn't over-exert them every day, they need time off to repair (much like our digestive system it would seem!).

Well after my first fast after holiday I weighed in at my lowest pre holiday weight so very pleased! 9's are getting closer!

BetsyBell · 06/06/2013 10:41

Melanie Ooh, fake pimms recipe sounds interesting, do share Smile...

ELR Excellent result! Periods of not worrying about it really help I think and it's so easy to hop back on board this WOE, it just doesn't feeling gruelling in the way other calorie restricting diets do. I'm still hovering around 10stone2 but I'm just going to carry on as I am without stressing about the numbers: I look ok, clothes feel good and mostly I'm just waiting to stop being stuffed up with colds so I can go out running in this lovely sunshine! I think I might drown if I tried it now [grossed out face]

Cupcakexprincessx · 06/06/2013 10:48

Thanks french and virgin very helpful tips I will try that.

One silly question regarding 16hr Fasts. I know the whole point is so that your body turns to fat to use. Are we allowed to drink sugar free drinks or sugar free chewing gum during that time or will even the slightest calorific intake in those defeat the object and give the body somethin else to feed on?

Thanks for the help!!

ELR · 06/06/2013 11:15

postman if you want to get under 30 mins do hill running as it increases stamina and speed. DH is just trying to get under 20 mins for a 5k he is at 20mins and 38 seconds and was recommended the hill running to shave off time.
It would take me at least an hour to do a 5k in fact I can't run for more than about 3 mins before I feel like I'm going o die!

Dotty342kids · 06/06/2013 11:21

ELR that's really good news, you must be very chuffed! How far off the elusive 9's are you?

BetsyBell · 06/06/2013 11:30

cupcake Aspartame laden stuff is bad news in other ways (see tips and links thread or google!) but I think on the 5:2 site anything under about 15 calories is still considered zero fasting - so that allows for drinks. You'd be better off drinking non-sweetener drinks though (tea/coffee/water/herbal etc) if you can.

MelanieCheeks · 06/06/2013 11:45

Fake Pimms: Get a lovely looking large glass, and half fill it with ice. Crushed, or cubes, your preference. Add a splash of angostura bitters. Add a splash of balsamic vinegar (I have a fruity based fig one which I use for this). Top up with soda water or sparkling water. Garnish with mint, cucumber slices, lime wedges, whatever. Find a spot in the sun and sip elegantly.

MelanieCheeks · 06/06/2013 11:49

Running 5Ks - I've been doing Park Runs for the past 10 weeks. These are really well organised and friendly, and take place at 9.30 every Saturday morning - worth checking out if there's one near you. My first time was something over 35 minutes. Last week I recorded 28 mins 16, and have been shaving about a minute off my time most weeks, though not all. Doing my first half-marathon in less than 2 weeks now Shock

TonytheFish · 06/06/2013 11:59

Hello everyone.

I need to stop weighing myself every day!!

My weight is obv fluctuating over the days...although I have not gone above my 2lbs loss....so I have kept that, but have fluctuated between another 2lb loss and forward and back!

I need to stop it!

Am wondering if i should maybe try and have breakfast on a nfd....I don't do breakfast and even on nfd don't eat till about 2pm or so.

postmanpatscat · 06/06/2013 13:02

Thanks ELR - bit flat round here though! I use the treadmill mostly and wouldn't faff about with the incline on there. I can't even picture a decent hill for miles, although when I used to run in Richmond Park there were plenty and I hated them .

Welcome fingerbobs I'm also 5ft4, started at 10st and now weigh 8st 8lbs. It took less than three months so maybe running+ 5:2 is the answer!

Itsaboatjack · 06/06/2013 13:07

tony quite a few of us on here also have the bad habit of weighing every day (2 or 3 times some days). I try and just record it once a week though, at the same time on the same day, same clothes. Do record it on any kind of app so you can see a graph? It's good when you can look at a downward trend, it helps to ignore the bounces.

monster54 · 06/06/2013 13:19

I just got lucky in my local small Sainsburys. They are stocking an instant miso soup at just 35cals a portion.

I think this might help me drop my nibble at around lunchtime!!

TonytheFish · 06/06/2013 13:20

Itsaboatjack - I have an app on my phone that I am recording once a week on a Monday and that has a graph I can look at.

It was just yesterday morning, i was down 4 lbs, today it has gone back to being down 2 lbs, so I am trying not to think "arggh I put 2 lbs on". Hopeful as the weeks go on and I can see over the weeks, what I am losing it will help. Not good for my state of mind to weigh daily though. As today I feel like I have put 2 lbs on, when in reality I have lost 2lbs!

outtolunchagain · 06/06/2013 13:41

Second fasting day today , was incredibly busy this morning so no time at all to think about food.

Have vv important meeting this afternoon though so have had salad and small slice of ham for lunch

Everybody's experiences on this thread are really useful and inspiring

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 06/06/2013 14:12

Thanks for all re the water/weight thing. I knew about the tiny tears etc, but not about the water retention aspect. I'm really interested that more than one person said that they put on 5lb during weight training. Would absolutely explain why I'm always up 1-2lb on Thursdays, but back down by Friday despite Thursday night being my designated Indulgence Evening.

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 06/06/2013 14:20

Eagle I have absolutely fasted with a hangover, and it feels fine. Good, even. Detoxy.

Fingerbobs · 06/06/2013 14:22

Thanks for the welcomes - and the encouragement to be a go-faster faster, which I like. I will run this evening, oh yes I will.
Are you supposed to avoid sugar altogether on fast days? I was all excited that mini twister ice lollies are only 45 calories a pop....

swallowedAfly · 06/06/2013 14:46

dotty great that it was only 3lbs. i really think this woe leads to more stability even though we bounce about when we're losing i've never seen the massive rebound weight of having a break that i've expected iyswim. it's breast reduction surgery related to back problems (scholiosis and protuding scapula taking all the weight of my breasts from the bra strap). terrified but happy with my decision.

elr - fabulous news and same as what i said to dotty - yes a break will put a little bit on but it's not 'real' weight and soon falls off again ime.

my grand plans of getting loads of housework and stuff done prior to op have melted into the ether but i was able to make really good headway on a final progress report due in at e/o june for a project i won funding for at work today. big relief as it will make going back after time off a lot less daunting knowing it's doable iyswim. needs plenty of work but the skeleton is there and i know i can do it and all the other stuff that needs doing by the end of the month when i go back.

house will have to go to hell in a hand cart for a few weeks. no one will die.

Dotty342kids · 06/06/2013 15:16

wow saf, sounds like a big op but hopefully you'll feel so, so much better for it!
Will be thinking of you tomorrow Smile, come back and tell us how you are when you can!

MelanieCheeks · 06/06/2013 16:00

Euergh, that broccolli soup I had at lunch time might have been a mistake - has really led to digestion issues!

angelabbie · 06/06/2013 16:18

Hi , I have been reading for a week now and wanted to say hi. I have been following the 16/8 for three weeks and not lost a sausage so took the plunge yesterday and had my first fast day. It was fine until about 9pm and was starving. Had a bovril and seemed to keep having it for the best part of the night if you know what i mean:) I am fasting again today simply because I am not that hungry so thought I would get it out the way for the week. I am having two strange side effects, not sure if related but in the last three days I have not been able to sleep. Not been hunger related but I am talking falling asleep at 5am getting up at 8 etc and also the most horrible restless legs. Anyone else?? I have some nytol for tonight as I must get some sleep.
