Fasting / 5:2 diet

The 5:2 Thread number 21! Soaking up the Sunshine

BetsyBell · 04/06/2013 09:04

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Just popping in after a couple of months of being elsewhere in my head.

Before my break from 4.3 i had lost around 2 1/2 stone with very little effort and regularly eating 700 calories on a fast day.

During the last couple of months i have gained around 2 pounds and i have eaten and drank anything and everything i wanted so i am delighted.

My head landed back on this planet and i decided i should finish what i started and shift another couple of stone or enough until i feel i am where i want to be.

My first week back on track showed a weight loss of 2 kilo which is great but experience tells me its a one off and be prepared to see the weight fluctuate .

Anyone who remembers me will know that this woe changed my life and i am a very different person now and that has not changed with the break.

I wet from mousey haired slightly frumpy to red haired wearing skinny jeans and now platforms too. I had extensions put in my hair and taken out again when i felt the desire to change again.

I started at the gym after losing nearly a stone and i still go now , i am fitter and happier in every way. Its all down to this woe , losing weight and finding the real me who had been hiding for very many years.

OOh and my horse appreciates it too and send his thanks to everyone who has supported me.

piebaldrider I think I turned up on this too late to witness your transformation but it's a wonderful success story. Smile Also lovely to have you back here!

I'm at an odd point - just about to hit the 6 month mark and although feel I would like to lose a bit more I'm not in any hurry to do so so am feeling relaxed about it all. At the moment I'm maintaining easily which is wonderful so I don't have that fear of turning around and suddenly realising 6 pounds have crept on from nowhere! I'm still 5:2 most weeks but it's just part of everyday life now rather than something I need to work up to or worry about too much.

On reflection, it's a good place to be.

Ok, first fast day over and I survived. Yay.

I got really hungry after work and dinner and a bit shaky. But I managed. Roll on Friday.

Just a bit about me to introduce myself. I'm 45, 4ft 10". I weigh 8 st 12. At my biggest I have a vague recollection (blotted it out of memory) of being over 11 stones and two years ago I made a decision to lose weight through the GI diet but also counting my calories through MFP. I went down to 8 stones, which I was happy with but I found it difficult to keep it off due to stress in my life.

Anyway, that's me. I hope to get to know you guys. Smile

When I first started this woe, I realised that my slim dh was always a natural faster. He just doesn't eat if he's not hungry. He will often go all day without eating and just have one meal in the evening. Or if when he sits down with us for a family meal and he is not hungry he will just eat half his plate and leave the rest for later. He always struggled with my idea that you should have 3 meals a day and they should be at breakfast, lunch and dinner time.

This is half the reason I believed in this woe straight away, I'd seen it work for him without even knowing it.

I was just thinking of this now because as I am lying in bed doing a spot of MNing (after a sucessful FD), he is sitting next to me with a massive bowl of macaroni cheese...... that smells yummy and I want some. (This is the first thing he's eaten since breakfast this morning)

Itsaboatjack: my DH used to be like that, actually. He'd come back from work having eaten an apple and a piece of toast all day. And he was very slim for a long time. It's only in the past few years, living full time with me (instead of travelling for work a lot as he used to), and copying my pregnant/breastfeeding eating habits, that he's stacked it on. These days if it's a weekend he'll have a cooked breakfast, then a morning snack, then lunch...and snack all evening. And he's put on 10kg since I married him, and he's only 5'7" and slim built. He was underweight before and is still eminently fanciable but it does show just how pernicious the lifestyle changes are.

Guys, talk to me about this "water in the muscles" theory? Because I'm up 1lb again after a fast day, and this seems to happen to me frequently on a Thursday morning - and then sometimes it drops a day or so later. And it occurred to me, maybe it's because I do fencing on a Wednesday night? Last night I helped shift a bunch of very heavy plants out of my mother's garden, then went to fencing, then came home and shifted furniture around and pumped up an air mattress with a manual pump until 10.30pm, and my arm muscles were burning. So what is this water in the muscles theory, please?

Nice to see you piebaldrider . I know what you mean about the horse, ours is far less reluctant to work now I've lost the weight.

Piebaldrider · 06/06/2013 06:46

Tortoiseonthehalfshell I cant answer your question but i have been at this for quite a while so feel i can comment.

Firstly if you weigh yourself frequently expect fluctuations , in my case they a be a couple of Kilos overnight but so many things affect water retention.
What you need to do is stop worrying about what you weigh and just keep looking in the mirror and trying on your tightest clothes . There are tims where i appear to have gained weight but i can get into smaller clothes. Fat is a funny thing and i dont care if i weigh 300 stone as long as i only look like i weigh ten.
Itsaboatjack When i was fasting before and i had fallen off the wagon or missed a day here and there or maybe cheated badly ( which i did often ) i wlould stick in a couple of days where i ate only an evening meal but within that meal i had whatever i wanted and i still continued to lose weight, so i think there are so many ways of doing this and like you say some people are doing it without even knowing it.

Betsybell Hitting that point is just what happened to me and i stopped fasting but was quite happy with the situation , i didnt gain and for two months i was very relaxed with myelf and my body and its very very good feeling that i hope everyone here gets to experience.

I fasted yesterday and am looking forward to eating somthing nice today..

good luck to today's fasters and to saf hope all goes well tomorrow.

I've set myself a new goal having met all my weight loss/exercise/waist size targets I set in Feb. I want to run 5k in under 30 mins (haven't done that for years) and did 30:45 last night so a bit more effort needed. DP promised me a treat when I do it but he's not saying what!

Piebald, thanks - I'm actually not that fussed, because I'm already at/near the weight at which I feel okay. I would look better with another half stone off, and this diet is giving me faith that I can do that and maintain it, but this weight is the weight I have been for most of my adult life, prior to having children, so from here on it it's all a bonus. My clothes definitely look better, and a few more pounds and I'll be into the next size down, which is all great. I started this because everything I owned felt tight and looked horrid, and now it's all loose and I recognise myself.

I'm just intrigued that specifically, my weight goes up a tad after fencing nights, which are fasting days. It seems really consistent so far.

Postmanpat, you're sooo close to that goal! Try running downhill

Good luck SAF! I'm so jealous of you, I want to know all about it later when you've recovered enough to type.

Tortoise I can retain a lot of water, iirc after I did a half marathon a while back I put on something like 5lbs after and it took a few days to come off as my muscles eased.

I'm still feeling rubbish, but on the mend. Hopefully back on track by next week. No fasting for about three weeks. I actually miss it, but the few times I've tried it, my body is just telling me not to do it whilst I'm ill, so I'm listening.

Anyway, I just wanted to come on to wish saf good luck tomorrow. You've done so well with your weight loss, that this op seems like a very good addition to your journey.

Also, thanks to everyone for keeping the inspiring stories going. Although I'm taking a back seat at the moment, I'm still reading each and every one.

Hello there, I'm delurking to say thank you for the inspiration and to ask if anyone else had a disappointing start? I'm on week 5 and have lost 3 pounds - but reading this thread it seems I just have to keep faith and it will come, right? I'm 5' 4, and (now) 10 stone 6. Since I stopped being a skinny girl aged 26 - I'm now 40 - I've bobbled around between 10 and 11 stone, usually prompted to do something about it when I creep towards 11stone 3ish. Ideally I'd like to be about 9 stone (well secretly I'd like to be 8 stone 13 and a half, just to see the 8). My best effort post - baby ( and he's 5, so I can't really blame that any more) got me to 9 stone 10. But this time I will do it .
So: please tell me that if I keep fasting, and watching my TDEE in between, it will eventually happen. And if you'd also like to tell me that getting off my arse and running would help too, please feel free!

I reckon I should listen to my body and it seems to want me to detox away the hangover so I'm going to fast today. It also means that I don't have to watch depressed as my family all eat out on our day out tomorrow whilst I have nothing. With tomorrow in mind I have also decided to got 4:3 this week so I can have a day of pure indulgence and not worry at all. Will fast again on Saturday then back to 5:2 next week.

Only a few weeks ago I was saying I thought 4:3 was too far for me. Its so strange how this woe changes your mindset.

fingerbobs I'm only half an inch taller and I'd just love to be your weight!

As you don't have too much to lose compared to some of us its likely to go slower, but there are plenty of people on here it is working for at these lower weights, as well as all the maintainers so it must work

thank you for well wished Smile

still 10.8 this morning. ended up having a bit of a stress plus hormones pig out last night. having said that the last few times i've thought i had a 'pig out' it actually turned out that even though i had eaten crap it roughly came in at tdee. which makes me realise just how much crap i must have been eating before on a daily basis!

looking at myself today i think i have lost weight on my upper arms at last. not as much as needs to go obviously but i can see the difference and that's pleasing. i've also been noticing that my face is looking slimmer which is nice.

right must go to work and try and make a dent in some tasks with deadlines starting to loom. struggling to be productive this week because i've been low level anxious and distracted every day. be glad when all this is over.

saf Flowers for your Friday operation.

Tortoise I'm not entirely sure of the science but whenever I ramp up my weight training (ie increase the weight), I go up on average 5 lbs the few days after. But it's always temporary.

I've been running (at a steady pace) for a while now, but today I shift focus and start a HIIT workout combining sprinting and power-walking. I am a little bit terrified and excited Grin. Right. Off to do it now.

saf what surgery are you having? I've scrolled up but can't find it - hope it goes well, whatever it is.

I got on scales, post holiday, this morning and was back up to 10st 12 so about a 3lb gain but it's nothing that I don't think will shift with a couple of fasts and a return to my exercise classes next week Smile
