The 5:2 Thread number 21! Soaking up the Sunshine

BetsyBell · 04/06/2013 09:04

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Hi Monster,

What is your TDEE/BMR?

monster54 · 05/06/2013 12:28

BMR is 1505

TDEE is 1806

babyfatbutt · 05/06/2013 12:31

but monster surely if your TDEE is about 1800 and you only eat 1300 on NFDs then your body thinks it's starving. I agree you need to eat more on NFDs. That's the whole point and is also one of the ways you can stay on this diet, cos it's not watching calories all the time, you can indulge.

monster54 · 05/06/2013 12:40

Nice in theory baby but I've not been losing that way. Like I said I;ve been stalling for some 5 weeks now.

I've tried 4:3 for 2 weeks previously and no success.

So just trying some variations to try and get things moving abit.

I believe I would have to eat a lot less that 1300 cals to put my body into starvation, and I'm eating to TDEE at the weekends.

plecofjustice · 05/06/2013 13:00

Hi Monster.

I know plateaus are really rubbish and disheartening!

Looking at your numbers, I would imagine you're a similar height and build to me. Assuming you eat around 2000 cals on Saturday and Sunday, I estimate your total weekly calorie intake eating 1300 cals on NFD's would be around 9000. Your BMR for that equivalent week is 10535 - that's quite a difference.

I know it's rubbish to be stuck at the same weight - believe me I really do (though not as rubbish as gaining 4kg's overnight, it has to be said!) But I'm worried by what you've said that you're not eating a healthy amount and that's not good for you long-term.

I'd eat a bit more, at least up to your average weekly BMR, give it a few weeks and see how you get on. This is a temporary blip that will clear.

Southeastdweller · 05/06/2013 13:02

Hi monster. Are you doing any exercise? If so then maybe do a little more. If not then, try and do some - even brisk walking helps.

melodyangel · 05/06/2013 13:08

Hi everyone hope you are all enjoying the sunshine.

I am rubbish at keeping up with all the threads but try and have quick look/lurk each week.

So here Dh is still going well although he is in a bit of a stall at the moment. I still don't seem to be losing much at all in fact I have gained the last couple of weeks. Think I need to up my excerise level. I'm small so maybe my body just actually doesn't need much food. On the plus side I get full really quickly now and this warmer weather means I'm nowhere near as cold as I was on fast days.

BsshBossh · 05/06/2013 13:13

alm71 to be on the safe side input your data as "light exercise" in the TDEE calculator in the OP to work out your TDEE. Good luck!

BsshBossh · 05/06/2013 13:32

mehefin that makes sense to me ( no snacking & IBS ). My IBS reduced significantly when I started 5:2, but since I stopped snacking between meals (allowing my digestion 5+ hours break between meals on weekday NFDs) my IBS has completely disappeared. It sometimes reappears on weekends when I am more flexible re grazing/snacking.

Cupcakexprincessx · 05/06/2013 13:52

Thanks peplum Monster and Postman for replies.

Today I have cut down my sugar to one in tea, and it actually isnt too bad!

Monster I too have been feeling dizzy for the last few days, maybe this links in to Totm? As it is mine too.

I need some tips ladies! In July I am going away for four weeks!!

Has anyone got tips of how I can at least maintain the weight?? Obviously I cant fast and lose weight but any tips on how I can maintain would be so helpful... cus after I come home I have ten days in uk and back away for two weeks! I know Im Lucky... Do not want to gain on the first holiday and feel uncomfortable and aware I have put on weight while on the second one!

Thanks Ladies :)

monster54 · 05/06/2013 14:08

southeast sadly time for exercise is pretty limited...I'll be honest non existent...

I understand what your saying poj but if I was to do 4:3 I would be dropping an additional 1300 cals from my weekly consumption.

Taking my TDEE from 1800 to 1300 just 3 days is 1500 cals, not that big a difference! So I've tried 4:3 and found it too difficult to maintain, hence why I am trying to just cut down the cals on my weekday NFD's and relax on the weekend.

Has been 5 weeks now and I am not slim by any stretch of the imagination so I'm just mixing it up a bit to see if it starts things moving again.

cupcake I think you might be right. I have had an exceptionally painful month this month. So wonder if its fluctuations in hormones!

Twinmama32 · 05/06/2013 14:40

Oh no peplum I think I'm the same and have been maintaining rather than on a plateau! I feel abit silly now, just looked back over the last few weeks and some nfds I'm eating way over! What a fool I'd been doing so well then just slipped into complacency mode!
And there was I convinced it was a plateau.... Blush

somewherebecomingrain · 05/06/2013 15:00

Hi all did my first fast day on Monday. Felt very good the next day and really looking forward to the next one on Friday. Surprised.

Dotty342kids · 05/06/2013 15:08

Hello all, I'm back!!
After a week in the sun (can't recommend Marrakech enough btw, it's fab!) I'm home and slightly scared of going near the scales. The first few days were fine, with mostly meat and veggies but towards the end we went to a different hotel and had some fabulous, but very carb based, breakfasts so I suspect that might have caused a bit of damage Grin

Anyway, I've not got time to read right through the last week's worth of activity but saf, headintheclouds and itsaboatjack, am dying to hear how you're all getting on Grin

Talkinpeace · 05/06/2013 15:35

I tried on my wedding dress today : its my 20th Anniversary this summer.
I'll have to get the waist taken in at least 6 inches to make it fit if I want to wear it.
Rather chuffed.

TDEE/ exercise
always assume that you are doing less exercise than you think.
that way you learn the self discipline that will stand you in good stead when you get slim and your TDEE drops.
For those around the 5 foot mark, your TDEE will drop to around 1500 ....

Dotty342kids · 05/06/2013 16:36

wow tip that's amazing!!

frenchfancy · 05/06/2013 16:58

Wow tip. It is my 20th anniversary next January. I've not dug out my dress yet, I put on weight as soon as I got married, I was a thin young thing at the time. I think it might fit though.

frenchfancy · 05/06/2013 17:03

cupcake you can fast when you are away, sort of. I managed it on holiday; I just did 2 days per week of mini-fast - ie don't eat anything all day but normally in the evening. I timed mine for the days when I knew that lunch was going to be nothing to write home about. No point in missing out on lovely food, but most holidays include some food that is just meh. So just avoid eating on those days.

Itsaboatjack · 05/06/2013 17:11

Glad you had a good time Dotty, I've been to Marrakech many years ago and it was lovely. If your meals were carb heavy I bet a lot of what you may have put on would be glycogen and water. Have a FD and a couple of low carb days and it'll be off again pretty soon.

Half term and a couple of events caused me to over indulged a bit too much last week too, on alcohol and carbs too mainly. Back on it this week though. Fasting today.

EagleRiderDirk · 05/06/2013 17:16

Wow tip. My slightly too small one has just gone to charity. Tbf, it is the dress I married exh in and I will have a nice new one for marrying oh.

swallowedAfly · 05/06/2013 17:55

welcome back dotty - sounds lovely. don't fear the scales - whatever it says it'll soon drop back off.

i saw 10.6.2 this week but was 10.8 today and yesterday as my period has arrived. hoping it dips right back down again after. am crossing my fingers for no gain or minimal gain for you from your holiday.

virginposter · 05/06/2013 18:04

Cupcake ff has given good advice and I would add that even just missing breakfast some days will give you 16 hours fasts (appprox) which should help to hold you steady.
I managed to only gain 1lb at Xmas by fasting immediately before, mini fasts during and fasting again immediately afterwards and I still ate lots of yummy food Grin

headintheclouds · 05/06/2013 18:35

welcome back from your hols dotty .Ive been a good girl in your absence ,stuck to the plan as usual. WI last week and have gone up 1/2 lb! ( 10 st 5.8 lbs).
Id changed my fast days for all of May to Tues/thurs because of May BH and to see if my weight loss would speed up but it hasnt .ive been hovering between 10 5- 10 7 for the last month now..But thats the way it is for me. This week is TOM so Im not expecting a loss this WI either. Its now 10 weeks till my holiday and I really wanted to be 9st 7 by then, but beginning to realise that AINT gonna happen at the rate that I lose weight. I think Bssh recommended a 36 hr fast but Im not hard core enough for that! 24 hrs is my limit at the moment and I thought that was good going!!

Itsaboatjack · 05/06/2013 20:06

GrinGrin the 5:2 diet was just being talked about Sally on Coronation St

PoshVoice · 05/06/2013 20:13

Just a thought whilst I was browsing...

For those hitting a plateau... If you are keeping to your tdee on fast days, is it your tdee for your pre 5-2 weight or for the weight you are now?
