Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 Thread number 21! Soaking up the Sunshine

BetsyBell · 04/06/2013 09:04

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Chocu here's a big SLAP. If you stop eating now you can still salvage the day. Remember, it's not about "tomorrow is another day" but "the next minute is another minute" not that I take my own advice !

BsshBossh · 20/06/2013 18:25

Cupcakexprincessx when I was calorie counting I still lost a lb or more a week even on 2000 calorie deficit. I put it down to not being entirely accurate with a) my counting and b) my actual TDEE. I wasn't complaining as accuracy isn't possible really.

ELR · 20/06/2013 18:32

Evening all, well didn't break my fast until 1pm so managed 17hours but have had 1000 calories as been snacking so calling it a mini fast! I am a little annoyed with myself, this is fast number 36 and my first real fail!
chocu stop now and like me callit a mini fast.
bsss hope it's going well for you.

dines · 20/06/2013 18:48

Hello everyone havnt been on here for a bit I keep comin and goin. My eating habbits have become very bad over the past month iv been having not so bad fast days but my feast days have been FEAST days.. I think iys becuse I dont plan my feed day sp I end up eating alooad of rubbish. . I need to say posting on here becuse u guys keep me motivated. How has everyone been getting on. Has anyone else gone off track?

BsshBossh · 20/06/2013 18:48

Yep, still fasting. No food has passed these lips. Being back in weightloss mode is very motivating. No more failed fasts for me I hope.

BetsyBell · 20/06/2013 18:50

Ok folks, this has been a difficult fast day, I feel hungry so am fantasising about what I could eat tomorrow. Unusually I have no idea what I want so my question to you all is if you could eat anything right now what would it be?

Not takeaway, they make me feel bleugh these days.

OP posts:
Chocupid · 20/06/2013 18:51

Thanks bssh I needed that as it could have turned into a binge, I stopped at 6.30 so if I don't eat till tomorrow evening I will have done 24hr fast so not to bad after all. Mini fast it is ELR it is frustrating, but if this is your first fail you are superhuman in my eyes. Thank you.

Cupcakexprincessx · 20/06/2013 19:10

Thanks Bssh

Do you mean you put the lb or more of a loss down not being accurate with tdee/calorie counting meaning the deficit was probably more than 2000?

I am so happy that we can lose a lb or more without the hastle of the 3500 deficit that all other dieters put themselves through

EagleRiderDirk · 20/06/2013 19:21

Betsy at the moment it would be the meal I've got going and the smell is killing me! minted lamb and veg pie with mash.

BsshBossh · 20/06/2013 19:27

Cupcakexprincessx I doubt anyone's TDEE or calorie counting is bang on the money so I put it down to that. On 3500 deficit I tended to loose 2+ lbs so I figured either I was undercounting my calories and therefore eating less than I thought or that my TDEE was higher than I allowed for or both. It never really bothered me and as some on here know, despite stalls, the overall trend has been downwards.

BetsyBell · 20/06/2013 19:39

Mmmm, sounds lush Eagle Envy

Talkinpeace · 20/06/2013 19:48

Fast over.
Did 24 hours on just tea and coffee then a tub of soup with a bit of ham and parmesan stirred in and a few bites of the kids leftover pasta !!

Dines
Welcome back. And get that bum of yours into gear. How can you be eating all that junk when I told you not to buy it? Grin

No, I do not calorie count any more.
No I do not eat up to my TDEE during the week but the wine brings me back to a weekly average ....

Itsaboatjack · 20/06/2013 20:43

Welcome back Dines, that was exactly my problem for a while. I was nailing the FDs but just kept eating too much on the NFDs. Are you doing 5:2 or 4:3? I was doing 4:3 so I dropped it down to 5:2, and put a lot more planning into my 3 week day NFDs. I now plan for the day what and when I am going to eat, I try to stick to an 8 hour window and keep my meals fairly low carb, and of course no snacking. Weekends I then enjoy.

Dotty how's your day been?

Cupcakexprincessx · 20/06/2013 20:46

Thanks all for replies, much appreciated!

What tdee calculator sites do you all use?

I have been quoted differently. One says 1500 one says 1700-1800?

The one on Michael Mosely's site says 1500, most others say higher

Thanks Smile

LikeaHurricane · 20/06/2013 20:59

Betsy a fresh homemade scone with lurpak butter. Yuuuuum Grin
Which is exactly what I'll be having after my lunch tomorrow, as a few weeks ago I declared Friday's will now forever be known in my world as Scone Friday!!
I love this wol

LikeaHurricane · 20/06/2013 21:09

Cupcake I think that the extra fat burning that fasting entails is why the loss is greater.....

Dines maybe worth considering not thinking of nfd's as "feast days" and just thinking of them as "eating normally days" with the option to fully enjoy weekends. What do you think? Bet that will get things moving again

LikeaHurricane · 20/06/2013 21:19

Bsshbossh I'm really interested in hearing a bit more about your heavy weight training if you are willing to share. How heavy, what exercises, etc. Do you use a DVD or a book or is it something you are paying for at a gym? I fancy mixing things up a bit so any advice/pointers would be appreciated if you get chance Smile

SoTiredAgain · 20/06/2013 21:36

Hi, anyone interested in becoming my pal on mfp? (Billy no mates here).

PM if you are interested. Smile

alwaysanauntie · 20/06/2013 22:18

Evening all, meant to be an fd here but cracking headache this morning & the launch of some picnic tables outside at work with team lunches meant it's fallen by the wayside... I think ive been under tdee yesterday and today though so not feeling too bad. Prob another mini fast tomorrow as Friday night is curry night and im already dribbling at the thought!

dines welcome back, the best thing here is it's a wol not a diet, so you never really leave :D along those lines, aka have you given 5:2 a go this week? If so, hope it's been ok.

tortoise & crystal we used to live on the gold cost & i remember rubbish winter well, so unexpected, i can fully sympathise. My dh wants to move back but the exchange rate is so rubbish it wouldn't be worth it for a while.

fluffypillow · 20/06/2013 22:23

Hi all, just checking in, haven't been here for a while!

Lost 16lbs now in 8 weeks. So an average of 2lbs per week. So happy with that. Gone from 13st 4lbs to 12st 2lbs. Dress size 18 to 16.

The 11's are calling me Grin

18th fast completed. Haven't failed a fast yet, which makes me stronger I think. I am very strict with myself on fast days, and it now feels very natural, in fact I actually enjoy it!

This will be a wol for me now, I'm loving the control I have around food, a first for me.

Because of the dicipline 5:2 gives me, I am able to impose certain rules on myself, and stick to them. I no longer snack EVER. I never eat after my dinner at 5:30pm. I eat 3 good meals a day on NFDs (2000 cals a day), which include treats, but I stop eating after my meal until the next meal. This helps my hunger monster to go back to sleep!

No more fasts planned until Monday now, have a good weekend everyone Smile

BsshBossh · 20/06/2013 22:23

Right, have completed a successful FD (in terms of 24 hrs without food) and broken it with a plateful of delicious cheese DH brought home from a very nice cheesemonger here in London (La Fromagerie) on homemade bread. 500 cals? I think not Grin.

BsshBossh · 20/06/2013 22:30

Cupcake I've only ever used Scooby:
scoobysworkshop.com/calorie-calculator/
Have lost 5 stones using my Scooby TDEE. But consistency is key - use the same calcuator and remember to recalculate as you lose (I recalculated every 5lbs loss!).

Hurricane my current workout schedule:
Mon,Wed,Fri - heavy (to me!) lifting with dumbbells and (from Monday) barbells, lifting more kg each fortnight - ultimate aim for lower body work (eg squats, deadlifts, lunges) is to lift my bodyweight
Tue,Thu - running (with HIIT sprinting intervals) and stepper

SoTiredAgain · 20/06/2013 22:34

Hurricane. Have you read new rules of weight lifting? My friend used the book to get started.

BetsyBell · 20/06/2013 22:36
