The 5:2 Thread number 21! Soaking up the Sunshine

BetsyBell · 04/06/2013 09:04

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Hi everyone [waves] hope everyone fasting is having a good day and all you non fasters, enjoy!

tortoise I've been doing this for nearly seven months, started in early December and whilst I've never had a lot to lose it has been slow and I've had periods of 5,6,7 weeks where I haven't lost on the scales. I've continued to shrink however, slowly but surely. I've lost between 12 to 14 pounds depending on bounce rate iykwim. I'm currently 2 lb heavier than I was 4 weeks ago but I am slightly slimmer than I was then. Can't get my head round it so I don't bother trying to anymore. It is what it is but it works. The scales a only a guide IMHO.
peplum for the trail shoes I went to a running shop located in a very large gym near Wheelton. Don't think I'm allowed to name it on here? Not sure. Got the boots online but no idea which site, whatever was cheapest

Dotty342kids · 20/06/2013 10:14

sweetcorn and prawns? Ok, you have that and I'll stick to my Yorkshire puds / friend onions and sausages Grin.
I know what you mean about this weather. I'm in a bit of a "can't be arsed" mood today and have lots of work to do which isn't an ideal combination.
Still, meal out tomorrow night to look forward to so that's the focus!

ELR · 20/06/2013 10:17

Morning all, fasting today and really not in the zone! I e gad a blak coffee and a glass of water. I am feeling downbeat and like I can't be bothered!
Have loads to do over next few days so think that is making me feel anxious and stressed out. DH away today and tomorrow with work so at least I don't ave to worry about dinner for him and already got the kids sorted.
dotty your dinner sounds nice!
Good luck everyone fasting today.
bread thanks for the link I've read it before but was ood reminder.

Itsaboatjack · 20/06/2013 10:19

Grin yes I know I'm weird. I have prawns in the fridge though that need using.

I've got a friends 50th birthday party tomorrow night to look forward to.

LikeaHurricane · 20/06/2013 10:22

Fasting today, starting work at 12 so I've had a morning with jillian michaels and done 6 week 6 pack and level 2 30 day shred, [polishes halo]
Currently cleaning bathroom and then have a shower and off to work til 8
Btw, bizarrely I find fasting easier at home and have yet to understand why. I just crack on with the cleaning, maybe it's some mad cleansing mind, body and house thing I've got going on! Too late for the soul I'm afraid Grin
Don't know how I'd feel if I worked from home though, probably very much like youfrenchfancy and nofork
Right, must crack on, see you'll later, have a great day!

BsshBossh · 20/06/2013 10:45

Morning all. I'm fasting today too. Now I'm out of maintenance and back in weightloss mode I'm much more motivated again to fast properly.

Gained a pound / Lost a pound
Yup.
That is called maintaining.
There is this strange myth in the diet industry - which I suspect is to keep you hooked on their products and meetings - that weight is stable.
UTTER BILGE
Nobody's weight stays the same all the time.
2lb is the difference between before and after a large meal or a large dump and a wee.

I am nominally nine stone : which means anything between 8:11 and 9:3 during the week.
I presume
But I only weigh myself on a Friday morning so do not know for sure - other than what my belt tells me.

So PLEASE do not knock yourselves for a single pound fluctuation until you've had three of them heading in the wrong direction three weeks running

BetsyBell · 20/06/2013 11:03

Eugh, is this a difficult fast day for everyone then? I'm struggling already! Had a big dizzy spell just now so ate a nectarine. But I last ate at 6pm yesterday so it's still a good nearly 17 hours at least.

DH has decided to fast with me today so I have to do it which is good. Got into work this morning to discover an entire room filled with cakes and sweets. I drank coffee.

I've been bouncing around the same weight for weeks now, not losing inches either! tbh I'm just grateful not to be putting on weight I think. Summer = birthdays in our house and I am the cake maker, I also end up being the cake eater as everyone forgets that it's around not that I wrap it up in tinfoil so no one else spots it in the fridge or anything once the initial birthday celebrations are finished.

For those fasting in cold climates crystal and tortoise - hot savoury drinks (bouillon, bovril etc) are highly recommended as are hot and spicy veg soups and curries. I'm not really finding salad season much easier - too much sweet fruit around and I miss the easiness of making a big batch of soup/curry for the week! I am loving the warmth though, even with the humidity. :)

Dotty342kids · 20/06/2013 11:14

Hi there BssBossh, how come you're out of maintenance and back in weightloss mode? Nice to see you btw!

TIP sound advice, it's easy to panic when it starts creeping back in an upwards direction but surely, at maintenance we shouldn't be weighing too frequently anyway?

Betsy you've done well already then! I was still snacking at 10.00 last night so really do have to try and hold off eating entirely until teatime this evening. My own silly fault Confused

BsshBossh · 20/06/2013 11:15

I work from home and oddly find it easier to fast. I think it's because I don't keep many snacky things in the house anymore or because of my no snacking rule. Once at my desk I tend to stay there until school pick up so not tempted to pop out to the shops. When I worked in an office it was in central London in spitting distance of a huge variety of wonderful cafes so many temptations; plus of course all the treats people brought in to share...

BsshBossh · 20/06/2013 11:20

Hi Dotty :) I'm out of maintenance because I like being slim and now fancy being slimmer. I don't look scrawny so I can aesthetically afford to lose a few more pounds. Plus I'm weight training now so I want to strip the fat down a bit more to show off my muscles . I think in the bodybuilding world they call this the "cutting phase" Grin.

LikeaHurricane · 20/06/2013 11:23

tortoise just remembered, bsshboshh posted a while ago about her massive stall last year. I seem to remember reading about it whilst still lurking ages ago??
Maybe if you post your stats again when you get chance bshh. Could be motivating, it was last time Smile I feel like a stalker now!
Right no more surfing, off to work, see you later xx

CrystalDeCanter · 20/06/2013 11:23

Thanks Betsy I need to make a good batch of soup. I have some miso in the cupboard which I can't quite bear to open yet, I dunno if you can get Bovril here, but the Bouillon is a top idea. Tortoise have you found the Woolworths fresh soups yet? I'm hooked on the Malaysian Chicken Laksa one - only $3 and about 180cals - I tend to add a few beans or other veg to bulk it out a bit.

I've had dinner of a pork chop and veggies which was quite nice. I could easily eat it all over again though.

TIP good advice, I haven't weighed yet this week but I can feel that my trousers are looser, which is great. I do still have a sticky out stomach tho (am apple shaped) do you think I can ever get a flat stomach without doing any sit ups (I loathe them)???

BetsyBell · 20/06/2013 11:26

Tip Entirely agree.

Things scales are good for: even though I'm x number of pounds lighter I still sometimes 'feel' exactly like I did before - the scales reassure me otherwise.

I weigh too often BUT I only consider my weight to be an average of the last few, not the gospel truth. Minor fluctuations are shrugged off. And only ever weigh at the same time of day with same clothes (or lack of in my case).

Dotty Thanks, yes I do try and put a full stop on my eating after dinner, especially before a fast day - I really like knowing I can have a bit of lunch, particularly on a difficult fast day.

Tortoise, hurricane yep my stall lasted September through December. I continued with my dieting though (as it was easy!) and by early January had lost 2 lbs. Since then just a 3 week stall in March (I think) but just carried on as normal and started losing again.

Breadandwine · 20/06/2013 11:59

When you think about it, our ancestors were the original yo-yo dieters - they'd make a kill or find a source of food, and gorge - then it could be days before they found food again. So their weight could never be stable - in fact, you could make a case for saying that a stable weight is unnatural.

I know I vary between 9.1 and 9.4 during a normal week - up to 9.6 or 9.7 after an indulgent weekend. But the extra weight comes off surprisingly quickly, I've found.

When I started, I was around 10.12 - just above the 'goal weight' of 10.10 I was given by WW many years ago. Still got the gold card, somewhere - I was 12 and a half stone when I began WW, and, at 5' 6", that wasn't good!

I knew I had a couple of pounds to lose - but the weight just kept falling off. I had no target, as such. I knew I had a bit of 'middle-aged spread' - my son would occasionally remind me 'Got a bit of a pot there, dad!' - and eventually I got to the low 9sts which suits me. I don't weigh myself very often - I just go by how much belt I can pull through. I added three notches to my belt - and that last notch is my red line, I don't intend ever to lose that.

But by far the best thing about this WOL is the increase in energy and well-being. I feel fantastic!

Add to that the knowledge that - for the first time in my adult life - my weight is entirely under my control! Grin

BsshBossh · 20/06/2013 12:43

Half way through my FD. All fine so far. Will see how I do when DD returns home from school.

Cat98 · 20/06/2013 14:17

Hello! Can I join this thread please? This is my second week and I'm on my 4th fast day today. I haven't much weight to lose, maybe half a stone or a little more? So far I've lost 3lbs since starting but like many of you find the scales bounce around all over the place so I don't take it as gospel!

I'm much more pleasantly surprised by how great I feel, particularly after a fast day. I have so much energy and my mood is generally lighter (I suffer from depression). As posted on the other thread, I'm not fussed about a really slow loss as long as it is generally in the right direction - I'm more interested in this as a healthy and manageable WOL that allows me to stay around a healthy weight and also means I can indulge a little some days - I really enjoy good food and wine and wouldn't want to be constantly counting!
It's early days but at the moment I'm happy with this.

So that's me - looking forward to chatting and hopefully beig able to offer some support as well as receiving it (you've all been very helpful so far!)

Looking forward to my dinner of fish and veggies tonight!

frenchfancy · 20/06/2013 15:22

Welcome on board cat It sounds like you have exactly the right attitude to make this work for you.

angelabbie · 20/06/2013 15:31

HI CAT I have found the same thing, I have had depression for many years,it became worse after having my son two years ago. Party of my weight gain is down to the medication so I expect it to be a slow loss. My mood has deffo improved, I feel as if things are a little easier and my mood is lighter.

Good luck

Cupcakexprincessx · 20/06/2013 18:17

Hi all,

Quick question. Are you all still eating up to tdee on non fast days?
Or not calorie counting at all?
If so how much are you losing?

I am doing well however find it so hard to stop calorie counting on non fast days. It still baffles me that I have been losing weight, when the weekly deficit is not the calorie deficit people say is a pound.

Anyone else finding this? Who is losing a lb a week, and what is your weekly deficit?

Just wondering how many people on this Wol are losing a lb a week even if there weekly deficit isnt too low. Whereas on calorie counting diets the people eat a weekly deficit of 3500 and thats the only way they can lose a lb a week?

Anyone got any answers as to why? Would be much appreciated! Thanks

:)
