The 5:2 Thread number 21! Soaking up the Sunshine

BetsyBell · 04/06/2013 09:04

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

ERD how do I find the pics? 30lbs is incredible well done

BsshBossh · 19/06/2013 20:15

I'm back in weightloss mode having maintained a healthy BMI for two months. Could still shave off a few more inches so from next Monday I will be back on strict 5:2 and weekly weigh-ins. See you next week!

peplum41 · 19/06/2013 20:39

Hi all
itsaboatjack hooray, you've finally left the plateau! Maybe it was all that squatting making your muscles hold water. I've found a dvd that has you doing squats and military squats and kicks, surprisingly fun!

chocupid did your return to fasting go ok?

eagle what an amazing loss, but like angel, have no idea how to see your pics. Those that see you frequently rarely notice for ages, then you suddenly get billions of comments. Keeps you going if you do plateau, which hopefully you won't.

saf good job and nice boss! Good for you. Yes, I should imagine fasting will help with repair.

tortoise and crystal gday to you both. Is it actually cold? We all felt the chills a few weeks ago, layers and hot brews do the trick.

akarucker · 19/06/2013 21:24

eagle I am blown away by all that weight loss in such a short time. What a difference!

Was it really just 5:2 for 2 months? I am so Envy. Are you eating at your TDEE on NFD? Is your calorie deficit for the week around the 3000 mark, or more?

Well done!

Talkinpeace · 19/06/2013 21:40

EagleRiderDirk · 19/06/2013 21:47

angel can you just click on my name? I'm not sure!

aka its really been just 5:2. Except one week of 4:3 which was to make up for a gorge. I don't tend to go to Tdee on NFd but its 1900 at mo so I've a lot to play with. I don't go hungry but I don't eat for the sake of it. Some days I'm naughty and have takeout.

Thank you everyone.

peplum41 · 20/06/2013 00:20

eagle, just looked at your pics, astounding difference! Well done.

Thanks for the tip tip

aka meant to say glad you're giving 5:2 a try. How are those NFDs going. Mine are rubbish, need to reign it in a bit. Or a lot. And start excercising more.

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 20/06/2013 00:33

Eagle! Wow wow wow! How can your OH say he hardly sees a difference? You look AMAZING.

Peplum, there's frost on the fields and it's maybe one or two degrees above zero when I drop my girls off at nursery in the morning, so, yes! Australians don't really do insulated houses or warm coats very well, so it feels colder here than it used to in winter there.

Guys, I am so unmotivated, I need help. Three weeks ago I posted that I'd lost 4lb after a 2-3 week stall, taking me down to 60kg. Then I got my period and gained 3lb again, lost some of it in water weight, then gained, etc etc. The net result is that I'm bouncing between 61 and 61.5kg still, which means that actually in the past 4 weeks I've lost 1lb. Maybe. On the scales this morning I was 62kg.

And I understand that there are stalls, and everything, and this WOE is for life not just for Christmas, I know. But that's barely 1lb, in a month: I've only been DOING this for two months, so it's hardly a stall while my body readjusts or anything. And it's winter. And it's cold, and all I want to do is snuggle inside and eat crisps. And waaaah.

I don't feel like I have the extra reserves to dig through this and try harder, not in the depths of winter; but if I do what I'm doing, I just maintain, and I'm not ready to just maintain.

Breadandwine · 20/06/2013 01:12

Hi Tortoise

Sorry you're going through a rough patch. I did think of giving you the usual 'But at least you're getting the health benefits' bit (which is true), but then I remembered a thread on the 52fastdiet forum, which gives reasons why some people are not losing weight:

www.52fastdiet.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=1006

HTH!

B&W

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 20/06/2013 01:48

Cheers B&W. To be honest, I'm probably not losing weight because I'm drinking too much wine on the weekends and whatnot. I'm just finding it hard, in this weather, to buckle down further than what I'm doing currently. I guess maybe I have to think about it like - I'm maintaining during the hardest months, and come spring the weight will fall off. Or something. I don't know.

In better news, though, I have lost 3-4 inches off my waist (not sure that I measured properly at first, thus the vagueness) and am JUST under the 50% magic ratio now. That is really, really good news for me, since what prompted me to start this was the fact that I looked permanently 4-5 months pregnant.

CrystalDeCanter · 20/06/2013 02:50

I am fasting today. AND FEELING VERY CROSS ABOUT IT. Sorry but I'm starving. It's 11am and I'm so hungreeeeeeeeeeee. It's not helped by a. being freezing. b being at home looking at a bowl of lovely fruit and c. having a slight red wine hangover.

Tortoise, how bloody annoying is that! All this effort for a few llbs loss. However it's great news re the inch loss. Can you list any other NSV benefits to perk you up? It is very hard when it's so flippin cold to starve oneself I know. How's your dh doing? Is he losing weight?

Eagle 30lbs in 2 months is astonishing well done!

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 20/06/2013 02:53

I'm right here with you, Crystal. Well, except that I'm having dinner with a friend, so my solution is to eat nothing all day and then try and have a light dinner, and call it a semi-fast. It was that or foregoing Friday night wine, and I'm not sure I'm that dedicated. We can be grumpy together.

I think DH is still losing weight, although he's being all manly and refusing to weigh himself much. He looks a bit slimmer in the face, and apparently his smaller trousers do up again.

Being freezing definitely doesn't help. Every instinct I have is going RED WINE BEEF CASSEROLE. FIRE. BLANKET. RED WINE.

peplum41 · 20/06/2013 04:59

Hi crystal and tortoise, didn't realise it got that cold in Oz, can sympathise, as we had very late spring in UK this year so can still remember what those fast day chills feel like, as was only a few weeks ago it got warm. We don't cast clouts til may is out.

There is nothing worse than a reluctant fast, some are like that, you've just got to grit your teeth and plough through. I've not lost weight for weeks, but still shrunk as clothes are loser. Take a look at how all your winter clothes fit, as come the spring you will be getting rid. They will be too big. When is your spring?

I'm going to ban wine on non socializing days. It's sneeked its way back into my life, and goes down to easily.

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 20/06/2013 05:10

Spring is Sept - Nov, the same as your autumn. We're mirror opposites.

Thanks for the bucking up talk. That's all I need, sometimes, the reminder that there isn't a secret easy way through.

peplum41 · 20/06/2013 06:05

The prevailing view we tend to have of Aussie life is that its year round barbees and that you all have swimming pools in your back yard! Fancy a dip?

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 20/06/2013 07:23

I know, Peplum. We moved over here with one jumper each and no woollies. In mid winter. To a single-glazed house with no central heating (as is standard - nobody has either of those things). Right down the bottom of the country.

Bramblesinforrin · 20/06/2013 07:27

Wow to waist tortoise. Hope you manage to clobber the plateau.

Semi fast today as working this morning so I must have breakfast and a snack. I will take it lighter for the rest of the day.

The 'no snacking' guidance is good stuff. I was about to go into graze mode last night and heard the no snacking voice! I wasn't actually hungry, so just had a drink instead. Have only bounced up 1lb since after fd, so maybe am getting there.

I also find I'm so much better keeping to low Gluten as I think it irritates me. Anyone else find they're better off gluten or wheat?

headintheclouds · 20/06/2013 07:42

eagle just WOW ! You look amazing ...30 lbs in 2 months , its taken me 20 weeks to lose 10 !

dotty hang in there and good luck fasting today.

Im fasting tomorrow instead of my usual Thursday. Have taken today off work and DH and I are going on a very rare lunch date without DCs .

Im off to the gym now .

Good luck all fasters today.

INeedThatForkOff · 20/06/2013 08:13

Folks I tried this WOE a few weeks ago, did well for a couple of weeks but struggled to get back into it after a birthday binge. I have two small DCs who don't let me sleep well, and I think the problem I'm having is that I'm feeling tired and weak so I get to about 3 and give in and eat to overcome the weakness. Then I can't stop and more than make up for any calorie deficit.

I've tried eating porridge at breakfast time but still failed in the same way.

I'll soon come to the end of a long and boring home-based work contract that's had me tied to my desk every spare minute, so I'll have a better balance with time to walk and exercise more. (Not soon enough mind you!)

Don't know what my point is really. Just getting things straight for myself I think.

I really have to do this. My post baby body is actually disgusting. My attitude to food is crap and I'm in danger of passing my habits onto my DD. I really want to be healthy and slim.

frenchfancy · 20/06/2013 08:32

INeedThatFork being tied to the desk at home is the worst place to be (currently on a fast day tied to desk at home!). Add tiredness to the mix and it will tend to scupper any of your plans. Why don't you try doing 16:8 for 2 or 3 days a week for now (ie have 2 or 3 periods of 16 hours during the week with no food 6pm to midday for example - no calorie counting needed just don't eat).

You may not lose much but it should stop you gaining at least, and will make fasting easier when you start again properly.

angelabbie · 20/06/2013 09:27

i found the pics EAGLE and you look fab! do you hv much more to lose? as you look how I want to look!!

INEED I did 16/8 for two weeks before starting the 5/2 and it made the transition easier for me so may be worth a go.

Dotty342kids · 20/06/2013 09:49

headintheclouds enjoy your lunch date with DH, sounds lovely!

itsaboat, am nearing end of first large glass of water of the day (first of many!). Dinner tonight is veggies sausages (only 61 cals each), Aunt Bessies small Yorkshire puddings (only 51 cals each!), fried onions and peas. Yum, yum, yum. Smile. What's your dinner going to be?

EagleRiderDirk · 20/06/2013 09:52

Angel - thank you. I'm Not even halfway to weight target yet. I've got 45lb to go, but will be happy if I only go another 31lb. at that weight I'd be skirting the top of normal bmi. it's taken this amount of loss to get me to just overweight bmi!

EagleRiderDirk · 20/06/2013 09:53

ineed - it is hard with kids and tiredness. I find days like that require lots of coffee and bovril. Hope everything calms down for you though so you feel you can give this another shot

Itsaboatjack · 20/06/2013 10:03

Morning Dotty. I'm feeling quite lethargic today, maybe this muggy weather. I've had one glass of water, one peppermint tea and one black coffee so far. Also done school run which is about 45 mins walking. For dinner I was thinking at trying saf's sweetcorn tip, and then add some protein to it, probably prawns, then a yogurt.
