The 5:2 Thread number 21! Soaking up the Sunshine

BetsyBell · 04/06/2013 09:04

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Well done Mr Halfshell, sounds the perfect reason to not fast.

A couple of NSVs here. My tummy control swimsuit yesterday didn't appear to find enough to control and was quite loose and today I've noticed that my thighs aren't having some mutual love fest they can't possibly be parted from when I walk Wink.

I've nearly finished my second attempt at the 30 day squat challenge. What are others doing when they've finished? I had thought of doing 250 3 times a week until it got easy, then upping it a bit. I quite like this entire legs no chafing feeling (well they're still touching and rubbing a bit but not majorly like before)

Dotty342kids · 19/06/2013 09:08

Eagle I did the squat challenge and now do 50 a day, most days to keep my hand in, so to speak!

swallowedAfly · 19/06/2013 09:21

love the imagery of thighs in a mutual lovefest Grin glad you're seeing changes eagle.

dotty - where are your hormones at? could it be related? are you knackered? tip would be do a relaxation break by listening to a guided meditation or something at the point where you're about to scoff the cake and break the fast and see if that breaks the urge and refreshes you.

i have just emailed my boss to say i'm not coming in this week/came back too early etc. wasn't going to but even the school run (5mins each way) has wiped me out so needs to be done.

EagleRiderDirk · 19/06/2013 09:34

Take it easy saf. The energy it takes to heal is surprising. Hope you feel stronger soon Flowers

SoTiredAgain · 19/06/2013 10:24

Eek! Just did level one of 30 day shred. Nearly killed me off, and I was not even using any weights.

FD. Just having dinner at 5 pm tonight and maybe a little snack later in the eve.

Dotty342kids · 19/06/2013 10:48

ooh, saf good point, period is in fact due today! Why do I never think of these things? That doesn't particularly excuse the inability to do proper fasts last week but does explain the piggery of the last couple of days! And good idea re guided meditation, I do have a CD that I can listen to and might do that in the evening if the urge hits me.
Glad to hear you've contacted the boss and are going to give yourself a bit more time to recover Smile. Enjoy today's sunshine!

swallowedAfly · 19/06/2013 11:07

glad to be of service madam. just had a great chat with my boss on the phone. i do not know why i stress and panic so much when he is really reasonable and lovely. think it's a hangover from the nightmare time i had in my last teaching post due to awful people and culture at the school.

so i'm going to rest lots and recover and get little bits done to this shit pit at a pottering pace.

DesperateDietingHousewife · 19/06/2013 11:43

Thanks for the messages of encouragement everyone!

I have put on another pound this morningSad but am not going to let it get me down. Next fast I can do is Monday, so I'll try not to go too overboard until then.

It's definitely true that posting on here does help to keep you on track, unfortunately, life is a bit crazy at the moment and I can't keep up with the thread but I am here and will post updates when I can.

It's good to see a lot of the same names, am glad everyone is sticking with itSmile.

Roll on some hot salady weather!

Itsaboatjack · 19/06/2013 12:16

Dotty have a kick up the bum from me Wink

saf glad you're able to take some more time off to recover properly.

eagle I'll still do some sets of squats a couple of times a week and then maybe try and do a 250 set on one day. I definitely know what you mean about the thighs, I wore a skirt yesterday with no chafing at all :)

I didn't get my morning workout today as I had a bloody stock taker on the door step when I got back from school so that has taken all morning, so now just time for a quick change and back to work.

EagleRiderDirk · 19/06/2013 14:46

Ohhh have just realised I've been doing this for 2 months. 30.5lb loss. PA feeling better. Back in my favourite jeans. Not needing to buy a wardrobe as I fit in my old non maternity ones. 7 inches off my waist (however that was exceptionally large, and is still large now!). Not bad. Not bad at all.

invinoveritas51 · 19/06/2013 15:06

Like bramble (well done you!) I too have returned from holiday without a gain - but I have to confess to having picked up a bug before I left which took a while to get over. Still, it was a first for me and I did a lot of walking (once I could) and tried to have a glass of water for every glass of wine and am now at a new low (or was, on Sunday - haven't dared to weigh since!)

However, since returning I have found it sooo difficult to get back into the swing of things! Hopefully, today will mark the start of the new regime - MIL2B is leaving for a few days and DH2B is also going to be away and seeing as I don't need to cook for the dog I can quite happily live on salads! Am planning to do 2 consecutive FDs, maybe 3, just to kick start the system again.

Well done to all who continue to inspire with their losses and those who have inspired me today by getting back on board! And saf: here's to a quick recovery.

Went to see The Boss last night in Glasgow - must have danced a few pounds off! What a night!

EagleRiderDirk · 19/06/2013 16:01

I've added a photo to my profile of a before and after shot. Though the before was slightly before I started, and I did gain a bit more weight its the best I could do as I avoid cameras like the plague!

BetsyBell · 19/06/2013 16:08

Fab stuff ERD! Well done - you're looking lovely :) Not too long before you realise you've shrunk out of your old faves I'll bet Grin

ceebeegeebies · 19/06/2013 16:28

Eagle Shock you look like a totally different person - you must be so chuffed when you look at photos like that!

NFD here and DH has just sent me a text suggesting going out for tea...doesn't take much to persuade me Blush

BsshBossh · 19/06/2013 16:30

Wow Eagle the loss is very visible and you look great!

swallowedAfly · 19/06/2013 16:49

wow eagle. keep eating the sweetcorn - reckon we can evacuate ourselves into size 8's Wink

EagleRiderDirk · 19/06/2013 16:52

Thank you all Flowers

Oddly saf I had been wondering why I'd suddenly gone from dropping 4-5lb a week to 1-2lb (I know that's average but I sort of thought it would slowly decline not drop suddenly). I think it may be I got blocked from the random 4:3 week. I've been evacuating loads since yesterday so my scales better show a decent drop on Friday!!!! Grin

EagleRiderDirk · 19/06/2013 16:54

ceebee I sort of needed to do it, no one other than a neighbour and someone who hasn't seen me since I was 8m pregnant with DS have noticed, so I wondered if I was going mad. OH in fariness said he could see a slight difference but as he sees me every day he isn't going to notice as much.

Dotty342kids · 19/06/2013 18:00

Eagle you look amazing! Just....... wow! Grin

itsaboat thanks for the boot, appreciated as always. Warm weather today has meant I don't feel like picking so about to have veggie burger, chips and salad for tea with the kids.
Fast day tomorrow and I am not, repeat, NOT, going to sabotage myself. Nopey no!

Talkinpeace · 19/06/2013 18:03

Eagleriderdirk
you look much younger in the second picture!
very impressed. well done

JB30 · 19/06/2013 18:45

Erd - you've given me hope! 30 pound in 2 months, amazing.
Coming to end of 2nd FD, fading fast, zonked. It's been a tough one but scales down this morning - thank you Saf again, sweet corn worked a treat. If I had any cals left for today I'd have more! Doing 16:8 (I hope) tomorrow, away for work, reckon its my only hope of keeping on track. Official week WI moved to tomorrow due to work, was 12.0.8 last Friday, fingers x'ed for a drop. Is it time for bed yet?

EstoyAqui · 19/06/2013 19:15

Well after a few weeks stalling at 71.9 I've finally lost again today. It was only 700g but I'm happy that it's heading downwards again. Im currently 71.2 and I would love to be in the 60s next week. I know it's a lot to ask for but I'm off on holiday next Friday and I have the 60s in mind for my target.

I have started the shred to boost things along.

Physically my body is feeling very different. My shape has changed and its weird dressing for a less busty physique. I've had to buy new bikinis to fit my bust into as my older ones are HUGE!

Itsaboatjack · 19/06/2013 19:33

Eagle that's brilliant, you look great. I've also lost 30lbs now but it's taken me a lot longer than 2 months.

Dotty I'm also on an FD tomorrow so we'll do it together.

Estoy the shred is great but if you're a compulsive weigher don't worry about seeing a bounce up. She does indeed shred your muscles so they retain water for repair.

Southeastdweller · 19/06/2013 19:58

saf I think I'll be having sweetcorn more now too. I'd forgotten how good it tastes.

ERD Just to echo what others have said, you really do look like two different people now. How amazing to have lost all that weight in such a short space of time. Was it all on 5:2?

itsaboat I'm very happy for you. I hope you're planning a little treat for yourself!

NFD here for me. Having mushrooms and garlic mushrooms with some pasta and then a glass of cold cider with some chocolate, and already had a double gin and tonic...my God I love this WOL Smile

Itsaboatjack · 19/06/2013 20:01

Ah thanks South. I'm going on hols in 6 weeks so I'm going to treat myself to a couple of new dresses for then.
