The 5:2 Thread number 21! Soaking up the Sunshine

BetsyBell · 04/06/2013 09:04

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Hi Saf I thought the same as peplum. Take care of yourself, it's still early days. Where's chocupid? Was it her that had the same op? Maybe her experience will help you if you pm her Smile
peplum nice morning for a yomp up the tower! Hoping to get up there tomorrow morning early doors before work, my favourite time, very peaceful. I use Roclite inov8 trail shoes, I also have some of their walking boots and they are super light.
Ceebeegeebies, the running will be psycholgical but if you are getting all the benefit you need from your current exercise regime then I wouldn't bother. I only started running cos it just fit in with my life at the time and I wasn't tied to gym times. And I'm a bit tightGrin I am having a bit of a reassess though after that bad fall last week. No serious damage but it seems to be happening more regularly nowadays...
Hope everyone is having a lovely day xx

BsshBossh · 18/06/2013 18:03

Take care saf.

peplum looks like my FD will be a success as haven't eaten at all and now may as well wait until dinner. Hurrah!

B&W I'm 43 and still race 5 yo DD to the swings in the park!

peplum41 · 18/06/2013 18:28

bssh hooray! If you make it this far then no point in trashing it now. Im glad I saw my friend last night, she needed that, but was annoyed with self for consuming so many cals in such a short space of time. Tonight is strictly 500, no quibbles, got a portion controlled pot of thai red curry from sains. What are you having now you're in maintenance mode?

hurricane thanks for that trail shoe name, had a look a the brand on wiggle, took my mind off how starved I felt for a good half hour.Grin Did you get yours local or off tintanet? Enjoy your stroll/run up to the tower. Early is my favourite time. I actually went in the tower today, all the way to the new top! Usually walk all the way round on the long paths, but my friend had silly shoes on (ballet flats!), so she did well just getting there. Where did you have your fall?

skyler don't suppose you could post the cauliflower recipe on French fancy's 5:2 recipe thread? Sounds good, glad you had a good scales result and NSV, with future NSV jeans result to follow shortly.Smile

DesperateDietingHousewife · 18/06/2013 18:32

Hello all Smile

I haven't been on for ages as life suddenly got very busy! I was very happy to have lost 8lbs altogether after starting 5:2 in April. I had a wedding to go to and felt great having lost a bit of weight and a few people have noticed too.

Since then, in the last 2 and a half weeks, I've had two failed fasts where I started really well and then suddenly pigged out in the evenings, one successful fast day and today I was doing really well and have suddenly eaten a piece of chocolate cake, some pringles, some popcorn and a crispy square-just can't seem to stick with it.

My weight had stayed stable but then a pound went on, then two...worried I won't be able to get back on track!

Any tips?

peplum41 · 18/06/2013 18:58

ddhw oh no!Shock That's what Ive done a few times. But I don't feel out of control generally. Maybe have to remember a few fasting tips, like keep busy, distract self with internet, get a brew, phone someone who is good for a chat, go for a walk, drink loads of water, try on some clothes in your wardrobe for NSVs and nearly there NSVs.

I usually find a quick check on these threads keeps me focused. If its a bit quiet on here, I go on the 5:2 forum. One day, I will learn how to do links! Hope that helpsSmile, and welcome back.

akarucker · 18/06/2013 19:03

DDH I'm sort of in the same boat. A few weeks of holiday + illness + lack of motivation, and before I knew it I was back into my fat jeans! Had quite a while of this.

Just woke up one morning and said to self WTF are you doing? Do you want this or not? Because if not, keep going and not only will you bust out of your fat jeans, but your kids will bury you in your fat jeans because you'll be so unhealthy! So that was that then, back on track. You can do it, just refocus and get back on board. Maybe change something up in case it was burnout/boredom?? I've moved from ADF to 5:2 and I seem to be more spurred on.

BetsyBell · 18/06/2013 19:22

saf take care of yourself, I'm sure people normally take a couple of weeks off work after surgery [hugs].

DDH I think posting on here is step 1, you'll get back to it and better than ever, those few lbs will melt away in no time too. Just remember that even a stalwart like TiP only fasts in term time so clearly must have several lengthy breaks a year!

My hunger signalling is back on track - I've been all over the place the last couple of weeks having hunger pangs almost constantly. I had a few days last week centred around party food (worked around fast days) and I wonder if letting myself go for it has somehow stimulated a desire to go back to my healthy lovely normal diet. I know that I really don't like waking up with my tongue feeling like it's coated in pringle flavouring, most unpleasant.

Tried saf's sweet corn suggestion at dinner for lazy sodding sluggish bowel. Have another mini cob ready to go with my lunch for tomorrows FD. On an nfd and anticipating a square or 2 of choc when the little darlings go to bed. Fingers crossed for mass evacuation!
Did 3 and a bit miles this morning on treadmill but had to do it v interval'ey, walk/jog on and so on but to be fair I did the same distance as usual. Just didn't have any fuel in the tank after FD yesterday.
Oh god, I need them children to go to bed! I need to get my treat on!!

Talkinpeace · 18/06/2013 19:39

Too right I do not fast full time!

Not on holidays, not when I feel rough, not when I've got a better excuse
BUT
I work on the basis that if I fast strictly 24 weeks a year
fast roughly 24 weeks a year
and say 'bollocks to it' 4 weeks a year
my life will be much more enjoyable as well as being healthy

akarucker · 18/06/2013 19:42

TIP I wish there was a 'like' button on here!!

Talkinpeace · 18/06/2013 19:50
Blush

The thing is that this for life.
I'm not losing weight (size 8 is quite slim enough at age 48 thank you)
but I'm not gaining it either.
And if I can stay this weight while partying quite as hard as I did this last weekend, life is good.

I know lots of people are trying to get down to a healthy weight, but the thing with fasting is that you'll carry on with it when you get there as it is a sustainable way of eating not a weight loss programme.

BsshBossh · 18/06/2013 19:55

peplum "What are you having now you're in maintenance mode?" You mean on FDs? I no longer rigidly count 500 cals - just eat a normal meal and not have dessert (just a 10 cal jelly and low cal hot choc) though I'd imagine I'm not far off 500 cals. The no snacking rule means I can't eat anything before and after dinner anyway.

BsshBossh · 18/06/2013 19:59

^I work on the basis that if I fast strictly 24 weeks a year

My favourite TIP post ever!

Southeastdweller · 18/06/2013 20:41

I'm pleased to say that the sweetcorn, raw broccoli and mushrooms last night did the trick and mission evacuation was accomplished this morning...I felt like I was walking on a cloud afterwards!

DDH Welcome back and like peplum I find that checking in here great for motivation when I need a boost. Seeing all those toned bods at the gym also helps! Evening-wise, I drink lots of water and eat soups which are really filling and always have frozen veg in the freezer as a standby and I cook a big pile of it and then add seasoning. If I'm thinking about a certain food or drink or that chocolate in the fridge looks longingly at me then I say to myself I can have it tomorrow!

Chocupid · 18/06/2013 20:46

Hi saf I'm in awe,I had 3 weeks off (self employed so I could) don't do too much too soon, I've only just managed to go back to work without the tiredness, and still not managed a fast yet, gonna try first one tomorrow as I feel ready now. And don't worry about the weight I've not put any weight on still 9.5, even with no excersize.

alwaysanauntie · 18/06/2013 21:10

skyler well done on your nsv, i've lost 2cm from my waist in 2 weeks & find things like that much more motivating than the weight loss (or gain!)

aka glad you've got your mojo back, i think moving onto 5:2 is a good plan, you don't have to be so hard on yourself so often & hopefully you will find it easier to live with.

Good fd here today after 2 pub dinners at the weekend & plenty of booze. I even took myself off for some solo outdoor circuit training at lunch for the first time ever so am feeling very virtuous :) have also come in around 450cals for the day and am lovely & full from soup and off to bed after a relaxing bath so it's all good!

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 19/06/2013 00:58

SAF, take it as easy as possible, please! Can you talk to your boss and work short days for a week or something? And I'm not sure you should be fasting - your body has a LOT of repair work to do, that was seriously major surgery, and it needs fuel.

Supposed to be a FD here today, but DH got an email this morning telling him that his revised PhD edits are satisfactory and he can graduate. So, sod it, we're having a celebratory lunch today. Also it is FREEZING here - below zero this morning - so a nice bowl of ginger/chilli duck noodle soup is definitely called for. We'll fast Friday instead, which means no Friday night G&T but I do need to be tougher on myself if this weight is ever going to shift.

It's funny, I've spent years and years "learning to like my body", which is technically within the correct BMI, but now that I finally have the confidence that I can lose weight, I'm really noticing just how much I need to. I mean, not hating myself or anything, but just noticing how things don't really fit well, how often I dress to hide lumps and bumps, etc.

CrystalDeCanter · 19/06/2013 04:31

Tortoise YAYYYYYY to your dh. That's fantastic, well done him, you must both be so pleased. Enjoy your slap up celebratory lunch.

I'm gonna fast on Thurs, so am enjoying a delicious lunch of left over cold pizza and sultanas .

Er, can someone enlighten me . . . what does NSV mean?

I am now going to have one more cuppa and then take the dog out for a LONG walk.

frenchfancy · 19/06/2013 06:39

NSV = non-scale victory. Anything that makes us realise our bodies are changing swhatever the scales say.

swallowedAfly · 19/06/2013 07:39

i am tempted to call my boss and say i came back too soon and need a bit more time but i really don't want to take the piss. i've only been there 7months and in a couple of weeks time i'll be finished for the whole summer. it's only part time anyway plus i have a project report to write by for some funding i won and a presentation to prepare which he is already having to go to deliver because they changed the date of the dissemination event and i'm not even in the country then. sorry boring stuff but point is that really i should go in.

southeast yay for the sweetcorn doing the trick! it is going to be my first port of call from now on for moving things along and may become a FD staple.

weight has bounced back up some more this morning. so i am going to attempt a fast after my failure yesterday. will be fine as i ate tonnes yesterday that is still digesting away so no worries about lack of nutrition i reckon. if it feels wrong i won't do it.

swallowedAfly · 19/06/2013 07:42

tortoise don't get too perfectionist - think lumps and bumps and dressing round them are part of being female unless you turn into a clothes hanger size 4 or something.

crystal just pop in and pick up my dogs and take them with you, they're feeling very neglected currently and then you'd get the really loooonnnnggg walk you were after Grin

Itsaboatjack · 19/06/2013 08:13

Finally!!! I've been bouncing around between 11st3 and 11st7 since the beginning of April. I didn't want to get on the scales this morning as after my first run in a while yesterday my legs are achey and feel like they may be retaining some water. I've been good with the scales this week and not actually weighed since last week.

11st0.2. Woohoo.

3.2lbs lost since last Weds and that's with too much wine Weds night, a hangover carb binge on Thurs and an unrestricted weekend. 10s here I come.

swallowedAfly · 19/06/2013 08:16

another thought - we're all assuming oh you need food to heal but isn't that actually contradictory to the theory behind this wol that actually the body goes into repair mode when it isn't overtaxed with digestion?

itsaboat - yay! fantastic. you will be 10something before you know it.

Dotty342kids · 19/06/2013 08:30

Am struggling with fast days at the moment. Seem to cope with not eating most of the day and then go and eat a piece of cake or load of crips / chocolate so may as well not have bothered with feeling hungry all day!
Between yesterday morning and now, for example (bearing in mind yest was a fast day) I've eaten most of a Battenburg cake! AARGH!!

Not sure what the matter is, I plan my meals under 500 cals for fast days as usual, I just can't stick to just them.
Am currently 3lbs over my lowest weight of a week or so ago. Really annoyed with myself.
Kick up the backside and stern talking to required please Grin
