The 5:2 Thread number 21! Soaking up the Sunshine

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Hello all, did my 4th fast day yesterday and this morning had a sneaky look at the scales and I am back under 10 stone for the first time since before I was pregnant! (Ds turned 1 last week)

Finding the fast days do-able - always fall asleep thinking about the toasted buttered bagel ill have in the morning for breakfast but have woken up today not that hungry and have been awake for an hour without eating anything.

I even managed to do a fast day on Friday while preparing all the food and baking a cake for my sons birthday party on Saturday!

What a great WOE.

Crunchymunchyhoneycakes · 18/06/2013 07:53

Although in common with other posters my digestion does seem a little more sluggish than before starting fast days. Will maybe up my water on fast days even more.

swallowedAfly · 18/06/2013 07:53

hope the sweetcorn helps southeast - if not i'd have a go at eating just sweetcorn for tea as in that's all that's going into your digestive tract and all it has to deal with.

i've bounced up a lb to 10.4.8 this morning but still a good low for me and as eagle delicately put it that's pre evacuation Grin going to fast again today and am going back to work so my body will get the shock factor of walking 10k after a sedentary week or so.

BsshBossh · 18/06/2013 08:02

Did a official weigh inthis morning and am bang on my goal weight still since I reached goal weight on 26th April. Very happy cause I haven't been calorie tracking at all nor have I been doing many full day fasts (been doing combo of 16:8, no snacking and increased weights training).

But I really want to go back to 24 hour fasting at least once a week because of the health benefits so today is a brand new day.

I'm back on it. FD today (will not make the mistake of having breakfast).

swallowedAfly · 18/06/2013 08:30

bssh you may be getting all the benefits from 16:8 - certainly 16hrs is more than old dr m does. i guess the alternative is do 10:1 for example otherwise load in nutritious calories the day after a fast?

hope i have your problems sometime Grin

Itsaboatjack · 18/06/2013 09:58

Morning all, and what a beautiful morning it is here down in London. I managed to force myself out for a run this morning. I really wasn't feeling it when I woke up, feeling all hayfevery, but I took an antihistamine and by the time I dropped the girls at school I felt much better so managed a quick 4 miles around the park.

A question for you gym bunnies please. My lower half is pretty fit and toned from regular running and 30 day squat challenge but my upper body is rubbish, always has been very weak, my core strength too is bad, I have no balance at all. Can any of you recommend any exercises to help? I try and do planks but I'm not good at them at all, is it just a matter of perseverance?

Good luck today's fasters. I'm on an NFD but aiming to do a 16:8 so haven't broken my fast yet today.

kellyboo · 18/06/2013 11:16

Hi all
This is my first post on munsnet ever! Hello
Iv been reading up on this diet and am planning to start next week once I have a plan of action.Im a bit baffled by the 16:8 that has been mentioned.Could someone please explain it to me.
You all seem to be doing so well and are very supportive of each other and im looking forward to joining you all.

Itsaboatjack · 18/06/2013 11:47

Hi Kellyboo and welcome.

Basically 16:8 is just another way of fasting. You eat within an 8 hour window, and have a 16hr fast. So for instance today I will break my fast around noon so then my 8hr window will close at 8pm tonight so I will eat nothing after that.

Don't over think it too much just jump straight in with your first fast.

peplum41 · 18/06/2013 12:14

Hi kellyboo, don't worry too much about most of what we ramble on about, just aim to do the two days of 500 cals, keep reading and stuff starts to stick and soon you will be on here answering someone else's question, doing 16:8, worrying about TDEEs, fretting about scales, sharing bowel habits, and losing weight amongst other things.

I fasted yesterday, all was well until about 7 when a friend called a Bridget Jones style conference to discuss the vileness of her estranged hub, I knew wine would have to be imbibed, but I then had crisps, biscuits and a blueberry muffin. In the space of 3 hrs went from 0 cals to 2000! It's so easily done. Dragged same friend up to Darwen tower this morning, which is a good ramble. Trying again today.

angelabbie · 18/06/2013 12:56

Hi all. My bowels at this moment are fine :) Is there any reason not to do two fast days in a row?? I fasted yesterday and today I am just not feeling hungry. As its nearly 1 I thought I may as well get my second fast done and out of the way. It does feel very strange to not feel hungry and this is my fourth fast day since starting.

Itsaboatjack · 18/06/2013 13:11

It's fine to do 2 FDs in a row angelabbie. The only reason it's not recommended is so to make this woe easier to do. If you feel fine go for it. I've done a few and often found the second day easier.

BsshBossh · 18/06/2013 13:14

itsaboat there are some great core exercises on Google:
www.google.com/search?q=core+strength+exercises+women

My MIL swears by pilates to strengthen her core.

I've found doing free weights exercises has strengthened my core/upper body significantly and it's also improved my running by strengthening my lower body too. Upper body dumbell or barbell exercises are terrific (especially if you do them standing up) cause your core muscles are constantly engaged.

angelabbie · 18/06/2013 13:27

thanks Itsaboat will go for it then.

T

Itsaboatjack · 18/06/2013 13:27

Thanks BsshBossh. I'll have a go at some tonight. I've not really got enough free time away from dc to get to a class. Do you use heavy weights? I've got some small hand weights but the heaviest is only 1.5kg although thinking about it I've got a kettle bell gathering dust somewhere, maybe I shall dig that out too.

skylerwhite · 18/06/2013 13:40

Well after all my moaning last night, I had an NSV this morning - my Zara skinny jeans are slightly loose around the waist! Still fine and tight around the thighs. I have the exact pair a size down from when I was lovely and slim last year so it's my ultimate goal to fit into those. Last night I did a workout, ate the lovely ottolenghi cauliflower recipe I posted up thread (this is seriously tasty, and v v low cal, do check it out), and then, prompted by all the bowel movement talk on here, had 4 agen prunes with 2 squares v dark chocolate. Delicious treat, but my tummy has been making funny noises all morning and no evacuation yet.

itsaboat I am pathetically weak in my upper body, but 30 day shred has really helped and I am now able to do at least a couple of push-ups. It's all online so available for free!

BsshBossh · 18/06/2013 13:45

Itsaboat yes I use heavy (to me) weights - more than 7kg for upper body (and much much more for lower body) but I started off much lighter. How about water bottles? And I know this sounds crazy but my 5 year old loves getting a piggy back from me when I fancy doing some lunges or squats Grin - you don't need a gym with small DC. Look at this link:

jnq1 · 18/06/2013 14:31

Hello (waves)
has anyone found better weight loss from doing 4:3 rather than 5:2? I've lost 7lb in 4 weeks with 4:3 and wondered if I should move onto 5:2 now....mind in I've not found doing 4:3 any problem as I do it Mon, Wed
and Fri
Any suggestions?

Breadandwine · 18/06/2013 14:37

Thanks, Bssh! Can't wait to get stuck into those exercises when our new baby (grandchild! Grin) arrives (only 10 weeks to go) - they look like fun for both parties!

On the subject of fun - have a look at my kitchen swing. Very popular with my 3 grandchildren.

Breadandwine · 18/06/2013 14:43

Hi jnq

Have a look at these discussions on the 5:2 fast diet forum re the relative merits of both.

swallowedAfly · 18/06/2013 16:00

afternoon. fast is cancelled today. haven't eaten anything yet but have ordered a takeaway. went back to work for the first time today and was totally wiped out by it. fasting can wait till thursday or friday. really surprised by how exhausted i feel.

Talkinpeace · 18/06/2013 16:05

((( saf )))
look after yourself

postmanpatscat · 18/06/2013 16:44

Get plenty of rest saf - takeaway sounds like a good start.

peplum41 · 18/06/2013 16:51

hi all Smile

Swallowedafly, when I read that you were fasting again, and going back to work,^already*, I thought well I must be a right wuss because I couldn't do that. Please listen to your body and take it easy. Expect more like this.

peplum41 · 18/06/2013 17:07

Breadandwine Ive made the mistake of looking at your blog on a fast day before, the first thing you see is loads of delicious looking home made bread. Ive haven't eaten all day you know!!

That swing would be great for core toning, but the ceiling would come down if I went on it. I love the fact that the 11yr old still wants her turn on it. Grin

swallowedAfly · 18/06/2013 17:26

i am rather wishing i didn't go back to work so soon. about two hours in i was struggling not to lay down on the floor of my office and have a nap.
