The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

twin I love your stats they have given me big hope. :-)

skylerwhite · 17/06/2013 19:25

Evening all.

Bit downbeat, I have to say. After being at 9st on Sat am, I was at 9st3 on Sun eve. If I give my food/activity diary for the weekend will someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Sat:
B: Cup of tea
L: Toasted bacon & halloumi ciabatta, 1/2 rocky road, tea
D: homemade pizza - prob one small restaurant size one, various meat & veg toppings. Shared bottle of wine Blush
Exercise: walked about town for 2 hours, then did 35 min run in evening.

Sun:
B: Cup of tea
L: Shared tapas with DH. I had 1 single chicken wing, some crusty bread, 1/2 portion calamari, 1/2 portion halloumi and some feta & pepper tortilla. Sparkling elderflower drink
D: 1/2 small homemade pizza, 1/2 brownie
Exercise: 20 mile cycle (explains relative piggery at tapas lunch), plus 1 session of Ripped in 30 Level 2.

Have I been overeating? CAuse I don't understand how I could do that much frickin exercise and STILL gain weight Sad Sad

skylerwhite · 17/06/2013 19:31

I should have added, I have been fasting today - zero calories so far - and had thought of doing a 24 hour fast. But feeling now like I might crack and have some asparagus or something Sad

frenchfancy · 17/06/2013 19:32

Skyler for a start you really can't weigh yourself one morning and the next evening and then compare the two. Everyone puts on weight during the day. it isn't fat it is water, and un digested food. You really need to weigh once a week at the same time of day to get a real picture of weight loss.

For another thing, you need to wait more than 24 hours after drinking wine as it gives a false result due to water retention.

And lastly - exercise, especially new exercise tends to give a short term gain due to the muscles retaining water.

You haven't been over eating, that sound like a pretty good weekend to me. Stick with the 5:2 and set yourself a fixed day to weigh in - I do it on Friday, the day after a fast day and it gives me the longest to get rid of the weekend bloating.

skylerwhite · 17/06/2013 19:43

Thanks frenchfancy. I know that there is bound to be a bit of bouncing on this woe, but I was v peeved last night. I know you're right about weighing in once a week to get a proper sense of losing/gaining weight, but I got in the bad habit of weighing multiple times a day when I was in the throes of some disordered eating last year. I'll try to ease off on the weighing. I appreciate your reply.

postmanpatscat · 17/06/2013 20:24

skyler don't be disheartened...sounds to me like you're doing everything right and evening weigh ins are the devil's work! frenchfancy is talking a lot of sense!

BsshBossh · 17/06/2013 20:40

aka yes, a lesson learned. I rarely eat breakfast these days; now I know why! No breakfast for me tomorrow and will aim for a 20+ hour FD.

akarucker · 17/06/2013 20:40

Oh blimey skyler - don't weigh yourself in the morning one day and the evening the next! Everything Frenchfancy says is right. At the very least, if you must weigh every day, make sure it's consistent (eg morning after the loo!)

peplum41 · 17/06/2013 20:58

Hi postmanpcat oh you are very inspiring, just jel because you can eat what you like and still lose. You've turned into one of those people. I think the running helps. When did you start that? Yes, don't abandon us chubsters, we like to hear about how life will be in maintenance.

hurrricane I'm out and about all over Darwen, with my little ginger dog. To the casual observer, I may appear to have little else to do! I usually circuit the playing fields at blacksnape. Takes an hour, great views. What trail shoes do you like?

Talkinpeace · 17/06/2013 21:01

sklyer
you need to weigh yourself as rarely as you can.
I do once a week on a friday morning after my swim and before yoga always wearing the same clothes

I do not own a set of scales.
the belt on my jeans tells me all I need to know during the week

skylerwhite · 17/06/2013 21:01

Thanks postmanpat and aka - I am too impatient I know! Just want to see those scales moving downwards more quickly.

As a matter of interest, do people generally weigh themselves weekly/daily/every few days?

alwaysanauntie · 17/06/2013 21:02

skyler i totally agree with the others, today is my official weigh in day, so i did the usual of first thing, after a wee in the nude and was 68.9kg, an hour later i weighed again out of interest TMI alert! after a cup of tea, 1 weetabix 50g of country crisp, about 150ml of milk and (ahem) a bowel movement and clocked in at 69.4kg! FFS over a pound difference, so am defo moving back to once a week weighing to save the stress :D

skylerwhite · 17/06/2013 21:02

Crossposts TIP - So you weight at the gym/swimming pool then?

Talkinpeace · 17/06/2013 21:03

skyler
there are scales in the gym - I use them. they are calibrated regularly by the gym staff.

Dotty342kids · 17/06/2013 21:24

Evening all! saf that is amazing - wow! You must be chuffed to bits. Well done!

SoTiredAgain · 17/06/2013 21:38

postmanpatcat, you're a teacher? So am I. How do you cope with the demands of the job whilst on a fast day? I only tend to do a fast day if I am working half days and it seems to be working out ok. I want to add an extra day of fasting but it would be a full day of work and I am a bit worried that I will be dragon teacher. As it is, even working half a day and fasting, I get very muddled, fuzzy and distracted - children all laugh because I keep doing daft things. I have even forgotten children's names and I've been teaching them since September!

SoTiredAgain · 17/06/2013 21:41

skylerwhite I do weigh myself every morning but I only take Friday's weigh-in as an official weight. My weight fluctuates on a daily basis but it's no biggy. I think I only weigh myself every day because it's just sat there within easy reach.

Witco · 17/06/2013 21:45

Marking my place. I began 5:2 just over 2 weeks ago and am feeling the better for it. I even look forward to fast days (Monday and Thursday) and especially how soundly I sleep afterwards. It's great to get moral support and ideas

postmanpatscat · 17/06/2013 21:46

peplum I joined a gym at end of Feb, having been a lapsed runner for quite a long time (first started about 10 years ago). I started with jogging 3-4k in intervals and have built it up from there. Yesterday's 12.5k was the longest since about 2007 when a friend ran the London Marathon and we ran together during his training not that I ever ran that far or anything close to it

Southeastdweller · 17/06/2013 21:56

TMI alert!

I've been constipated for a week and a half now which may have had something to do with my gain last week. It's very unlike me to be so blocked up and my diet hasn't changed so I'm a bit worried. Not even my usual bucket of coffee on Sunday morning did the trick. Had a sneaky weigh-in today and I'm the same weight even though I did a 35 hour fast just a couple of days before. I don't think I'll cope well with seeing another gain on official W.I day.

I took the advice from saf (very well done on your new low Smile ) and have just had some sweetcorn, together with raw broccoli and raw mushrooms for dinner, also had two apples after lunch...surely all that must help?

By the way, does anyone know if it's true that you burn calories whilst standing up? I had to stand at the National Theatre the other night for three hours .

SoTiredAgain · 17/06/2013 22:03

southeastdweller yes, standing up burns more calories than sitting down. Between 12-30 cal more per hour than sitting down and sitting down, you could burn anything between 66 and 126 calories per hour, depending on how much you weigh.

EagleRiderDirk · 17/06/2013 22:19

Skyler just out of curiosity I weighed myself tonight. I was 179lb on Friday morning, now after a fast day and 3 good eating days I'm 182lb. But I've now both clothes on, only ate a couple of hours ago, have drunk loaded of water and tmi I havent pooped for well over 24hrs, which is rare for me. The scales will be better tomorrow am (I've been weighing on fast day mornings but only friday is official now.

postmanpatscat · 17/06/2013 22:34

sotired I don't recall noticing anything amiss when combining fasting and teaching...I was fasting Mon and Weds, both of which are full days in class for me. I might get a gurgly tummy, or a bit of a headache, and early on I had real issues with diarrhoea Blush but it mostly settled down. I exercise on fast days too, though I might scale it back a bit.

EagleRiderDirk · 18/06/2013 06:50

Just to continue the tmi theme, all that extra weight last night has gone, plus a little more whilst I still haven't fully evacuated (sorry all - just trying to give another working example)
