Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 Thread number 21! Soaking up the Sunshine

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

word without the spaces jnq.

postmanpatscat · 17/06/2013 12:36

tortoise I had a weekend of chocolate, and pizza followed by pecan pie and cream on Friday night, ate SIX choc digestives yesterday and only went running on Mon, Thurs and Sun. The solution must be even MORE chocolate Grin

postmanpatscat · 17/06/2013 12:37

And well done goodtobetter - definitely getting better (and thinner!)

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 17/06/2013 12:41

Definitely, ppc. More chocolate for all! Or at least, for you!

Talking of which, can I just say that today I was offered:

fresh jam doughnuts
triple chocolate cookies
AND a deeply intense chocolate brownie

And I gracefully declined them all.

Off to polish my halo now!

Miffytastic · 17/06/2013 12:42

Hello everyone, FD today for me... my motivation now is to see 9 again on Wednesday morning, as it was only by a whisker last week
Have eaten a fair bit of crud this weekend- crisps...cake... chocolate brioche....also didn't have the oomph to exercise much lastweek so need to get back to it. The good thing about this WOE is that Monday comes around, I fast on Mondays, and instantly my "off the wagon" mentality is curtailed IYSWIM? Previously I would definitely be continuing with the comfort eating right now!

Hurricane welcome - glad you've delurked - we're the same height and shape though your starting weight was my target weight! I can't imagine being 8 something!! I also like running, need to up my distance from the paltry 3 I usually do

swallowedAfly · 17/06/2013 12:46

ooh miffy you've just reminded me of the AA 'just for today' card. to paraphrase it says something like, i can bear for 12 hrs things that i would find impossible if it were for the rest of my life. it's the 'one day at a time' mentality they bring to sobriety and that seems to work for so many and thinking of it is a parallel to this wol. nothing is forever - or as others frequently, 'i can't eat it tomorrow if i want to'.

ceebeegeebies · 17/06/2013 13:18

SAF - I think you are correct...it is the whole mentality of it being 1 day only makes this WOE totally doableSmile

Well I impressed myself today by choosing to walk to the hairdressers this morning Grin whilst I am a gym bunny and do quite a lot of exercise, I can be quite lazy in the rest of my life and will often take the car to pick DS1 up from school even though it is only a 10 minute walk Blush

I really need to make the effort to walk instead!!

Twinmama32 · 17/06/2013 13:34

Afternoon all! Fast day for, wretched scales STILL haven't moved. however NSV today someone said to me "omg you're a skinny Minnie there'll be nothing left!" I am absolutely delighted especially as its been 5 weeks since I last lost and since I last saw this person, therefore despite weight not decreasing I'm obv looking smaller! (Btw I'm not wasting away I'm 12stone 6!) Grin

Stats- 5'7" start weight 14.7 at 4 feb, current weight 12.6 so 2 stone in about 4.5 months.

swallowedAfly · 17/06/2013 13:55

the ten minute walk there and back 5 times a week is probably worth a whole gym session ceebee not to mention it will save you petrol, be more sociable and use up some of that after school and before bedtime valley of time. do it! in some ways it's probably more because i suspect that a genuine, using more energy through normal day to life 'stuff' kind of change makes more impact on the metabolism than the discrete bursts of gym time.

ceebeegeebies · 17/06/2013 15:01

SAF - unfortunately I can only do school drop offs once a week and pick ups twice a week because of work so it isn't that much exercise! but , otoh, it isn't that often so should really make myself do it!

JB30 · 17/06/2013 16:16

V pleased with myself, scales only showing a .4 of a pound difference between Friday and today. Every other week it's been nearly 5 pound Grin
1st FD of week well underway, can't wait for my dinner, yummy Thai stir fry left overs which I'm pretty sure taking into account amount left should fit my remaining cals. Bit headache'y but reck

JB30 · 17/06/2013 16:19

Stupid phone!
Reckon I can finish strong was what I wanted to say. Nfd tomorrow, the FD Wednesday, the 16:8 on Thursday. That's my plan anyway - run tomorrow & Thursday mornings. Aiming for a good loss after 4 weeks of faffing. Game on girls (or gents ;)

BsshBossh · 17/06/2013 16:34

peplum fast day fail. I blame the breakfast. Tomorrow will try again :-)

peplum41 · 17/06/2013 16:36

twinmama NSVs are much better than those silly little boxes we perch on, our whole well being for the day ahead suddenly hanging on what number comes up. Despite not losing myself since late April, I am shrinking. Baffling. Yay you, skinny minny, you've lost loads.Grin

EnvyAny body else have Postmanpat's cat envy? Envy

jb30, I think I feel a bit reck. must be catching

peplum41 · 17/06/2013 16:43

ooh, x posted Bssh, I don't think that's entirely surprising. Hope you feel up to it tomorrow. Now you're at target and fasting for health benefits, do you still need to stick to 500 cals? I guess you are mini fasting, with the no food gap being the point of it? Ive not thought of that before.

Itsaboatjack · 17/06/2013 17:00

I was not very good over the weekend, started off with such good intentions but then baking with dc on Sat kick started the carb monster. Then lunch out on Sunday, which would have been fine except I couldn't stop picking in the evening.

I don't know what damage I may have done as I'm staying away from the scales but I did have an NSV today as I am wearing a pair of jeans that I haven't been able to fit into for a long time.

So FD today and all going well so far. I've had a couple of coffees with almond milk and now waiting for my dinner.

Peplum I can definitely notice a difference from doing the squat challenge so I'll keep them up, I just won't be getting anywhere near 250 in one day!! This morning I did a short HIIT workout which was basically 4 sets of: 30 secs run really fast on spot, 10 squats, then a different strength/weights exercise. Tomorrow I'll force myself to go for a run after I drop kids at school/nursery, hopefully should manage about 4 miles. I try and do 2x HIITs and 2x runs a week.

Oh and well done saf, great result.

LikeaHurricaine · 17/06/2013 17:34

miffy thanks for the welcomeSmile I am really small framed,
my fingers cross when I wrap them round my wrist.
peplum yes I use trail shoes, tend to run Sunnyhurst woods, Darwen Tower and Tockholes, although after another nasty fall last week, second in three months, I am seriously considering going back to road running and just run/ walking the fells. Trouble is I'm not that fond of road running...
Fast going well today, water and black tea so far. Will have a chicken breast with Harissa paste, big salad and a hard boiled egg followed by a tangerine about 7ish Grin

LikeaHurricaine · 17/06/2013 17:37

Saf I love your posts, they make me chuckle but also suffering with slow moving issues myself, I find them really helpful.
Great weight loss too btw

LikeaHurricaine · 17/06/2013 17:38

peplum, ceebeegeebies, do you get out walking/running round our way?

postmanpatscat · 17/06/2013 17:43

sorry peplum I'm trying to be inspiring! I like you lot so much that I'm a rare visitor to the maintainers thread. Always happy to congratulate you all on your losses and successful fasts and keep cheering you on!

ceebeegeebies · 17/06/2013 17:51

Hurricane pre-DC, me and DH used to go walking a lot up to Darwen Tower and round the reservoirs at Edgworth but haven't been for a few years as my 2 are not big walkers - I can't wait for them to get to the age that they can make it up to Darwen Tower Smile

As for running, I would love to be able to run but I seem to have a psychological block about it Hmm No idea why (think it might be trackable back to awful cross country runs at school) but I start off running and then feel as if I am going to die after about 2 minutes so I stop. I consider myself to be quite a fit person and the classes I do at the gym are very high-energy ones so I don't think it is a fitness thing - definitely psychological!!

Breadandwine · 17/06/2013 18:07

Ah, Sunnyhurst woods! That takes me right back to when I was 7, 68 years ago, and broke my wrist climbing a tree!

(Well, it was the falling out of said tree that did the damage! Grin)

PearlyGrey · 17/06/2013 18:10

frenchfancy - I've been doing it for about 5 weeks, I'm fine with things like pilates, lbt and 'gentler' classes but I really struggle with spin, especially as the ones I've booked into this week are the more difficult/longer classes. I've actually found that doing pilates makes the fast days a lot easier but fasting and spin don't work for me at all!

BsshBossh · 17/06/2013 18:26

peplum yep, not bothered too much about the 500 cals but since I only eat dinner on fast days they tend to be around 500 cals anyway. It's crazy how just 2 weeks off full fasting and I've already lost the habit.

akarucker · 17/06/2013 18:34

bssh I've never managed a fast if I've had breakfast. No way!
