The 5:2 Thread number 21! Soaking up the Sunshine

BetsyBell · 04/06/2013 09:04

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

jnq

I'm 5ft 4.5in. Started on 19th April at 14st 13lb. On Friday I weighed in at 12st 11lb

Wow, that made me feel like I was at an AA meeting!

Morning everyone else. Hope you are all losers this weekend

postmanpatscat · 16/06/2013 09:03

eagle you're doing great!

welcome jnq I've lost 10.5kg as of this morning, have just weighed myself! That's about 24lbs since Feb half term and my goal was to lose 18lbs, which I achieved about 11 weeks in to this WOE. Supposed to be maintaining now but I'm not making as good a job of it as I thought.

ELR · 16/06/2013 09:11

Morning all, good luck fasting today saf if you don't mind me asking what was your bra size before and what is it now?
I'm 5ft4 started on 18th Feb at 10st13.5 and now weigh 10st1.25 so I've lost 12.25lbs in 17 weeks.

swallowedAfly · 16/06/2013 09:33

hi jinq.

i'm 5'7 and started at just over 12st at start of february and am now 10.6ish. so 4.5months thereabouts and i'd say about 24lbs down. sometimes quickly losing sizeable amounts and sometimes sticking for quite a while. my next goal is to get under 10.

ELR i was squeezing into a 34F (turns out i'm 32 so would have been at least a G if i'd been wearing the right band size) and the little sports bras i bought at M&S yesterday were 32B but are cotton light things so i don't think a good size guide iyswim. think i will settle down at between 32B or C. so quite a big size change even though the surgeon didn't remove that much in weight - he said he took around 300g from each side that was weighed but then they also did a bit of lyposuction on them apparently to improve finishing shape so that would have been a bit more but not a great deal. he seemed a bit mystified as by the weight in theory i should have only gone to a DD or so. think it must have been very loose tissue/fat rather than dense stuff which would fit with the shape they had gotten into - don't know if that actually makes sense phisiologically but only explanation i can see of such a dramatic change of size from so little weight removed iyswim.

swallowedAfly · 16/06/2013 09:35

should add i wanted a full B but could handle a small C as i know they can't be that precise so i'll be very happy if they settle at 32B. my ideal was when fully healed etc i would be able to not wear a bra if my back pain came back or carried on. so far i have had no neck or shoulder or back pain since waking from surgery 9 days ago so fingers crossed.

swallowedAfly · 16/06/2013 09:40

my other 'ideal' is to be able to wear one of those bikini tops without straps! i am really excited about that pathetically Grin ooh and sleeveless dresses and halter tops and allsorts!

JB30 · 16/06/2013 09:48

Great question jnq1- it's really encouraging seeing those losses ladies, brilliant job.
I'm 5 foot 4.5 inches - started on the 21st May at 12.5.2, yesterday morning I was 11.13.8. So 5.4
Saf - I'm totally with you on the constipation. My first week my bowels worked great, all the mange tout I was having I reckon, and low & behold, 6.6 in less than a week - pity it all went back on/off over last 4 weeks. Hope your fast goes well today, fair play to you for getting back into it.
I'm doing my 16:8 today, just made dh a bacon sambo while I have black tea. It's not too bad - distracting myself on here. Getting up for a run in about 40 mins(slovenly lump i am still in bed while kids fend for themselves)
Going to have a nice lunch out with a glass or 2 of vino. I was thinking of skimping but decided that's not in keeping with the WOL so sod that! Have a lovely day all

SoTiredAgain · 16/06/2013 10:03

I feel rough this morning. 2 nights of hardly any sleep and alcohol last night. I only ever drink when we travel to see DP's sister because her DP makes a mean margarita. Grin.

DS decided that he was so excited Friday night when he got here (he normally sleeps in the car on the way up) that he did not fall asleep till 11.15 pm Shock and because he was so overtired he kept waking up through the night and a very early start on Saturday. Then last night I went to bed really late and I woke up early this morning because alcohol does that to me. I have a slight headache.

Just about to face breakfast. Ugh. Will come back later when I am not feeling sorry for myself. Smile

JB30 · 16/06/2013 10:03

Just enjoying your list of things to wear Saf! I dream about what I'll wear when I get to target - if I managed the way lots of you have I could make it there by Halloween!!!
When I get slim (I want 9 stone 11 - under 10 with wriggle room) I'm going to wear my clothes inside out so people can see the size Grin - only (kinda) joking.
Wish wear list consists of:
Clothes that are fitted with zips down the side - I know that sounds odd but I'm v gutty/lumpy between my boobs and belly - nearly like another set of boobs to be honest! I'm going to buy jeans in topshop, if they'll let an old woman like me in, and I'm going to buy a strapless frock - without my back fat it might be fetching! Going to get eye surgery as I think glasses are aging me, all round reinvention. Better start saving eh? Ahh skinny girl dreams, what do skinny girls dream of I wonder? When I getslim I'm going to have to find a new hobby!

postmanpatscat · 16/06/2013 10:14

saf I have an Avon crop top thing with no fastenings that is supremely comfortable, although a little high cut at the front so I can't wear it with some necklines. Might be worth a look?

JB you're doing great! I can't do strapless as don't have enough to hold it up, and planned to have laser eye surgery but wasn't a suitable candidate. Extended wear lenses are the next best thing though! This newly skinny girl is looking forward to a bikini on hols this summer - never thought I'd say that at 45!

ELR · 16/06/2013 13:04

jb30 skinny girls dream about cake, dressing on salads and pizza!
The best thing about 5:2 is you can be slim and eat cake it just takes a while to get there!

Talkinpeace · 16/06/2013 13:11

saf
THat was indeed TMI about the toilet
BUT
it made a really useful point
weight fluctuates not because of laying down fat but because of undigested food and fluid retention.

jnq
I saw the programme last summer and started fasting on the first day of autumn term when I weighed 10 stone. I am 5'5"
By the last day of term I was down to 8 st 12 lb
I have fluctuated around 9 stone plus or minus three pounds ever since.

BetsyBell · 16/06/2013 13:18

I've had a busy week filled with eating crap and drinking lovely booze so back on the wagon today. Had a 5.3km run this morning and am fasting - though having my 400cal meal in approximately 40 mins!

I'm a bit out of date with posts so hello to the new arrivals [waves]

Saf Lovely to be thinking of new wardrobe items to go with your new shape :)

OP posts:
swallowedAfly · 16/06/2013 13:20

that's why i shared TIP. it may be crass but it helps to know a poo really can explain a 2lb bounce Grin

betsy do you run and walk or can you actually keep running that far?

BetsyBell · 16/06/2013 13:32

Saf - I've worked my way up to it (did couch to 5K last year, couldn't do 2 mins before that) but yes, I can now run for all of that (small boobs really help...!)

OP posts:
Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 16/06/2013 14:19

SAF I'm 32GG when slim, H otherwise, the idea of not wearing a bra is like you're describing a different universe!

Off the wagon last week, only managed one fast due to crazy 14 hr day work commitments. Put on 1lb, which isn't surprising. It wasn't the fast days, but I totally reverted to old NFD eating (& wine) habits. So that's two weeks of stall and one week gain, I need to step it up again.

postmanpatscat · 16/06/2013 14:33

Just got back from the gym, ran 12.5km non-stop Shock and still haven't had anything to eat yet! Shower then a large amount of food, I think.

tortoise the idea of H cup is a like a different universe to me, even when breastfeeding I only managed the dizzy heights of a B cup! Funny how women vary so much...my sister is my height, but with enormous boobs and is a size 24/26.

JB30 · 16/06/2013 14:53

Did a 3.5 mile jog and and 1.75 mile walk - while fasting. I'm amazed how easy that part of it is. Had a yum lunch and now enjoying a glass of vino (and maybe some munchies)
Definitely feel more in control this week.
Yep, reckon you're right Elr, skinny girls probably do dream of pizza etc. I like the idea of not having to dream. My skinny girl dreams will be of showing off my toned midriff in a bikini - ahhh lovely

sausages51 · 16/06/2013 15:43

Hi JNQ I started on Jan 13 starting weight 16st 1lb. Last Wednesday and this morning am 14st 13lbs. I never dreamed I would ever get below 15 St anything, yet here I am! I am 5ft 7 and for the record 52 yrs old. I will continue on this WOL as the slow sure steady results are, for me, phenomenal.

swallowedAfly · 16/06/2013 15:54

is everyone just rubbing it in now about their running prowess? well done everyone. impressive stuff.

ouch tortoise! hope they've got better built in support than mine had - think that was half my trouble. i went from a c to gg in the first trimester of pregnancy - it was insane! obviously when they went down somewhat again a lot of damage had been done.

Dotty342kids · 16/06/2013 15:56

Hello everyone. Just catching up on posts as DH and I took advantage of the children being away on Cub camp and skipped off to a hotel for the night. Cue lots of alcohol, lots of food yesterday and a hotel breakfast this morning. Followed by eating out for Fathers Day lunch. God I feel stuffed!

That's it, will eat a normal light lunch tomorrow as in London at meetings all day and then fast days on Tuesday and Thursday.
Nice to see you back headintheclouds, itsaboatjack, saf and Betsy and hello to all newbies too! Sorry for not greeting by name but like some of you too I guess, I tend to "follow" (if that doesn't sound too stalkerish), a select few who either started same time as me or who had similar starting weights / weight loss "journeys". Oh good grief, that sounds so X Factor Grin

Anyway, JNQ, I started mid Feb at 11st 8lbs. Am just under 5"4. I lost the first 5-6 pounds fairly easily, stalled for what seemed like forever, and am now 10st 8lbs. Well, probably more like 10st 10 after the last couple of days Smile.
I feel happy where I currently am and all my clothes are fitting nicely. Bit of a dilemma really as I know I'm technically still overweight and over the healthy BMI range but if lose much more my clothes will be too big and I really like a lot of my clothes!
Determind to properly get back to 2 days fasting a week as since holiday a couple of weeks ago, then illness, I've been all out of my normal routine and it's going ot catch me up and bite me on the wotsit soon!

Wow, that was a bit of an epic post, sorry!

Ooh, saf, great to hear you're recovering nicely. Soon be on track for that skimpy bikini Grin

jnq1 · 16/06/2013 16:18

Thanks everyone - that's really helpful as I was reading that some of you were under 9st etc and I was thinking I've never been that light since I was a child.........I'd be happy to get to 10 stone and then see how I feel and look for my height, body shape etc.........
Well done to you all - you're really inspiring me.....I'm finding the diet pretty easy and am hoping because of this I'll stick to it long term.
A few years ago I tried Lighter Life and lost 2 stone but the day I came off of it I started piling the weight back on plus some extra........and the worst thing was that it mucked up by metabolism so bad I've struggled ever since.....
Anyway enough from me for now x

swallowedAfly · 16/06/2013 16:26

lighterlife is evil imho.

dotty good to hear you're feeling happy with your body as it is Smile bikini won't be skimpy - it will cover everything with nothing spilling out or making me feel indecent i'm hoping. will be nice to feel less conspicuous.

i had thought about a zero fast but thinking on it i think i'll actually take the opportunity to help my bowels along. am going to have a whole tin of sweetcorn with a nob of butter at teatime and if i really get munchy later i'll have half a can of beans. worked out that's only about 390 so may squeeze a glass of wine in if i really fancy it.

SoTiredAgain · 16/06/2013 16:46

Wow at all the runners. Very impressive. I really need to get going on exercise - it's the one thing I find I have trouble sticking to. Any advice?

jnq. I might be under 9 stones but I am only 4 ft 10. I am quite overweight for my height. Very flabby too (see above about lack of exercise).

Did anyone read yesterday's Guardian (I think) about applying 5:2 principles to the rest of your life eg relationships (two days a week of being positive to your partner), money (2 days a week of limiting spending), watching TV, cutting out device time for two days, and exercising to the limit for 2 days only. Some were more successful than others.

swallowedAfly · 16/06/2013 16:50

sotired i'm the wrong person to answer probably but for me it's about 'life' rather than gyms or pockets of condensed activity. walk everywhere, get a dog, always take stairs, get up and walk laps round work, go the long way to make get your cup of coffee etc. that stuff is truly maintenable and what animals (re: us before we lived and rode around in boxes and bought our food off shelves) do - they exercise because it's their mode of transport and their way of getting food.

alternatively i hear couch to 5k is great and lots of people with little time to spare swear by exercise dvds Grin
