The 5:2 Thread number 21! Soaking up the Sunshine

BetsyBell · 04/06/2013 09:04

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

skyler it's a Chelsea bun (swirly, yeasted fruit bun) with icing and a cherry on top. Or maybe that's the other way round. Confused. Nice.

I agree about eating when you're hungry. I don't always manage to avoid comfort eating but I believe my eating is much more "mindful" than It has been.

Itsaboatjack · 14/06/2013 21:38

Evening everyone.

Well done Brambles, that's brilliant.

I'm on a FD today, was supposed to be yesterday but after an unscheduled few too many with a couple of friends on Wednesday night I was far too hungover. So instead I ate my own body weight in carbs. Today's FD has gone well though, and I'll just have to make sure I don't overdo it on the weekend.

So my new bedroom furniture got delivered today after about two months of waiting, and the bloody wardrobe was split so had to go back so god knows how long it will take for them to bring a replacement. But I definitely had a bit of a work out sorting out the room. While I was storing away all my clothes I counted I had 21 pairs of jeans!!!! How Ridiculous. And I've already charity shopped about 6 pairs that were too big now. Hopefully I'll be getting rid of a few more soon, about 3/4 of them fit but some still a bit tight, but plenty still far too small so they will give me a target to get into them.

So nice to see so many new people on here, I hope you all find lots of encouragement. It's such a supportive thread, it's helped me get through more than one sticky or miserable moment.

headintheclouds · 15/06/2013 00:30

Aaw dotty its nice to be missed!
ive kept a low profile on the thread this week because Id had such a big moan last week I felt quite guilty and didnt want to undermine everyone elses enthusiasm with my whinging!!

Anyway after putting on a lb last week I made a few changes! Exercised 3 times this week ,recalculated my TDEE down a bit .Pleased to say its worked because I have lost the said pound and another lb to go with it!
So Ive seen a new low for me.. Ill try not to get too excited though cos often it comes back to bite me on the bum the following week!Grin

It is good to see all the new posters/ delurkers .. Dont get put off by the --buggers people like me who have a moan now& then... This works!! It might be sloooooow for some ( me) but it truly works.
11.5 lbs lighter after starting this January 30 ish.

swallowedAfly · 15/06/2013 07:18

morning - haven't kept up i'm afraid but just checking in to say scales are saying 10.8.6 still which is unsurprising as my digestion is still not back on track to put it politely. considering a fast day. been a week yesterday since surgery and things went well at my wound check so i'm sure it would be ok if it feels right.

i know scales are unreliable but i am noticing that my fat % has dropped and my muscle % has gone up presumably from the surgery even though i'm not seeing a loss at a minute.

EagleRiderDirk · 15/06/2013 07:36

saf don't worry yet. It takes a few weeks for your body to stop randomly bloating and retaining water and other things after massive surgery like you've had. Also any good painkillers they've given you will add to that too, especially anti-inflammatories. Go easy on yourself. Glad to hear the wound is healing well.

Emilythornesbff · 15/06/2013 08:08

Well done headintheclouds. I think it's absolutely fine to have a moan. It doesn't
It ppl off I don't think. It's useful to help us all problem solve.
And usually makes a good read Grin.

saff don't worry. As eagle says, it's early days and you are still healing. All will be well.

I'm keen to hear about holiday fasting stories if anyone CBA to share. Smile

AnnaPrentice63 · 15/06/2013 08:37

Hi Posh, hang in there. You've lost a great amount of weight. Seems that you may have hit a plateau which may shift next week or take a few more weeks. As Brambles wisely advises either stick with it, change something or have a break. You will start losing again. Bet wishes.

AnnaPrentice63 · 15/06/2013 08:38

Best wishes even!

akarucker · 15/06/2013 08:44

So happy I fasted yesterday, after such a long break. It feels really good this morning. Going to dig out some ready brek for breakfast and enjoy the day.

swallowedAfly · 15/06/2013 09:02

head a moan is NOT offputting. i think it helps to show we all have frustration periods but keep going. if everyone on here was saying yay this is so wonderful ALL the time and i'm losing ten stone a week EVERY week etc i'd find it a lot more offputting and like hmm this obviously doesn't work for me and now i can't feel i can talk about my concerns ra da ra da. you know? a moan is reality. plateaus are reality. ups and downs are reality.

thanks for comments - yeah i know things won't be settled yet. 2 days of morphine and then 3 days of codeine have seriously messed up my bowels! i've been looking about 6 months pregnant with bloating which looks especially ridiculous under my now tiny breasts! Grin

hoping things do settle down and start dropping again soon though as we're off on holiday in less than three weeks.

JB30 · 15/06/2013 09:06

Lovely sunny morning here - nearly went for a run but since I did one yesterday and my hip is a bit achey, thought it might be counter productive. Had a very well behaved Friday - stayed within my allotted 1530 in mfp. Have the day mapped out and am considering trying a 16:8 configuration.
I think one of the things I like about this WOE is, theres quite a few options open to you - it's only the 500 that I find a challenge. Feeling good and optimistic that I can use the next 4 weeks to put on dint in my girth. Really have to dig out the measuring tape. According to the scales this morning, I'm down about 5.5 pounds in 4 weeks of fasting. Although to be completely honest I lost that (and another 1 pound) in the first week - just spent the last 4 weeks putting it on/taking it off - ultimate yo yo.
But there was no mystery as why - nfd piggery, sunshine wine time, and the curse of the cheap chocolate. Hope everyone else is looking forward to a lovely weekend. Time for yummy breakfast ;)

Southeastdweller · 15/06/2013 09:18

akarucker Yes, looks like a lifetime of 'disordered eating' cannot be undone in such a short time.

Amen. My issues have improved since doing this WOL but I know there's still some way to go. Great to have you back with us.

Just read through yesterdays and this mornings posts and feel like I'm back on track after feeling a bit annoyed with myself yesterday and Thursday. Had an active afternoon off work yesterday running errands and a solid gym session afterwards.

Well done ELR and skyler and anyone else I've missed. Very inspiring to read a loss during a holiday from brambles.

Anyone else fasting today? I'm doing a zero hour fast. Spent too much money on theatre tickets so I'm a bit short! Good job I like black coffee...

swallowedAfly · 15/06/2013 09:27

not me south - have pondered and i think i will do tomorrow as a fast. ds is going out for the day so there'll just be me to worry about. will aim for a zero fast and to eat a rare breakfast of scrambled eggs before going to work on monday. bit anxious about coping with work but don't want to take the mickey by taking more time off but a good breakfast might help somehow.

i take it you mean a zero cal fast not a zero hour one!? Grin zero hour fasts don't sound too productive.

Nettnett · 15/06/2013 09:43

emilyhornesbff

I accompany my husband on lots of business trips (he works, I sightsee), and I have found it best to skip breakfast, coffee only, and wait until 1 or 2 pm ( giving at least a 16-18 hour fast from night before) before having a light lunch (soup or salad) then a 'normal' dinner, salad entree, protein based main with veggies, wine (of course!), occasional dessert.

I have done this for the last 6 months or so, 6 or 8 trips, lasting 4-7 days each and I haven't gained at all. I have even lost weight a couple of times.

Hope you find this useful.

Emilythornesbff · 15/06/2013 11:12

Oh thanks nettnett I like the sound of that.
It's so easy to graze all day when travelling. That should prevent it if I can stick to it Smile

skylerwhite · 15/06/2013 11:44

Well I've bounced back up to 9st - to be expected after that scone with clotted cream! Also think I didn't drink enough water yesterday. That will be rectified today! Also going for 16 mile cycle, albeit to a farmers' market and back, so will get some good cardio in.

Best of luck to everyone fasting today - must be tough doing it on a weekend!

ceebeegeebies · 15/06/2013 21:21

where is everyone??

ELR · 15/06/2013 21:34

ceebee hi I'm here! I clicked on thread about 30 mins ago and couldn't believe there wasn't a post since this morning! I've been working all day and eating cake all evening so that's my excuse.....

ceebeegeebies · 15/06/2013 21:56

Me neither Shock Shock this thread is usually so fast moving!!

EagleRiderDirk · 15/06/2013 22:15

I'm here too! Clicked about an hour ago and thought mumsnet was broken. Have eaten a very yummy dinner but can't have dessert again as I'm too full on what was a tiny portion before. I think my raspberries are going to go off.

angelabbie · 15/06/2013 22:48

Just came back from the cinema where we saw the Liberace film, it was ace, really enjoyed it. We then bought a dozen dunkin donuts to bribe the babysitter (my mum) and i never ate a bite!! Actually I cannot stand them so that was easy.

swallowedAfly · 16/06/2013 07:17

morning you quiet lot.

down to 10.7.2 this morning as a result of my bowels beginning to function again Grin i reckon there's at least half a stone in there. i am indeed gross.

am going to try for my first fast since surgery today. bit nervous as to whether i can do it but really want to see this belly gone before i go away on the 4th.

think this change is going to be quite motivating as i really need to rethink clothes now. i got used to dressing around my breasts itms and i'm going to have to look again at what shapes and stuff i need to wear and i think it's going to need to be quite fitted so the tummy def needs to go and stay gone. i had big boobs and slim legs so could wear something that fell from the breasts and have slim legs sticking out underneath and hey presto there was no tummy! now there's slim legs and a small chest and a tummy sticking out in the middle - luuuuurvly! Grin

also a lot of my clothes don't seem to fit now as they flap about and fall too low or look like sacks as i was having to wear bigger sizes to accommodate my breasts so they were already baggy at the back itms but now are just daft. but at the same time i don't want to go buying more fitted stuff whilst i've still got this belly going on so i just popped and bought a couple of cheap tops from H&M yesterday for work and am digging through the drawers of old stuff that was too small looking for 'getting by' options.

sorry long boring post. i have talked more about my breasts in the last few weeks than in a lifetime fgs.

swallowedAfly · 16/06/2013 07:25

sorry WAY tmi but managed to go to the loo again and couldn't resist weighing myself again and am now down to 10.6.6 - just proving how much weight can be in constipation.

postmanpatscat · 16/06/2013 07:57

morning all :)

saf glad you're recovering and well done on getting under 10 7 even if it was achieved by sitting on the toilet!

I haven't been online much, time taken up by making the most of DP (went to Oz and HK yesterday for two weeks) and writing school reports. I'm looking forward to a chilled out weekend next time when all the work is behind me.

jnq1 · 16/06/2013 08:07

Morning all - Happy Fathers Day!
I've been lurking round for a while but thought today I'd finally post -well more of a request really.........
Can some of you put your starting weight and your current weight and your height just so I can see how everyone is doing for some motivation when I have a bounce week and don't lose any - you're all massive inspiration to me! You've all done so well!
I've lost 6lb in 3 weeks and desparate to get to the half stone mark this week......
Thanks all and keep up the great work
