The 5:2 Thread number 21! Soaking up the Sunshine

BetsyBell · 04/06/2013 09:04

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

i also think there's really simple things like buy a pint of milk at a time so you have to walk to the shop to get it rather than those huge containers or build in a routine of walking to the shop with the ds to get them a 10p ice pole after tea. oh i do have a tip! get a decent pedometer - sad but i find it really motivating.

BetsyBell · 16/06/2013 17:11

sotired I started my exercise 'regime' by moving more in everyday life - choosing to walk & cycle more rather than drive or bus, actively deciding on tasks each day that would require a longer walk/cycle. I combined this with eating more mindfully and healthily, kept a food diary and once I was feeling fitter and lighter added in other exercise (sporadically) - dvds, dancing, pilates, running, yoga.

Over the course of a year or so went from 13stone6 to 11stone2. Then I started 5:2 in January, with the good habits already in place and lost a further stone. I'm now maintaining around the low 10s and as a size 10 (thighs are size 12, tops often 8) which suits my 5'5" frame but am aiming to eventually lose a few more pounds and tone up the jiggle on the thighs and lower abdomen.

I'm happy to do this last bit really slowly as there's pregnancy stretch to deal with and I fear the thighs will look a bit saggy if I shift weight quickly. I do find that 5:2, with little restriction on the 5, allows me to maintain very easily and stops me putting weight back on, which I do very easily normally.

Hello! Been lurking for 2 months and jnq inspired me to speak up Smile
I can't remember how I heard about 52 but started 8 weeks ago and I've gone from 11.9 to to 10.2 - never thought that would happen! really happy about it - up until about a week ago i couldn't believe it had happened! reading threads gets me through a tough day :)

postmanpatscat · 16/06/2013 18:50

Just having a read...it's here Guardian article

Dotty342kids · 16/06/2013 18:54

wow tryinghard that's amazing! I started at a similar weight in mid Feb and have only just got to 10.8! Well done (and welcome) Smile

Cupcakexprincessx · 16/06/2013 19:25

Hi all,

Ive read a few comments on bowel movements! I know its not a great subject but is anyone else constipated?

I am doing 5/2 and 16/8 and never feel the need to go anymore.

Sorry haha any replies would be much appreciated... Starting to worry now. I have been eating fiber such as wholegrain cereal and bars and lots of water.

Thanks :)

EagleRiderDirk · 16/06/2013 19:34

cupcake well as we're all in a tmi mood... I am IBS-d and I've gone the other way! Its getting better though

Talkinpeace · 16/06/2013 19:40

When you start fasting, because you are taking in much less food, your bowels will have a first reaction of "absorb everything" - so little 'movement'
logically after fast days, not much is going to 'move'

but after a couple of months it should settle down - especially if you keep your fruit and veg up
a healthy person has one dump a day, maybe two
if less than every two days, there are medical problems
if more than twice a day, go veggie/vegan for a few days but with lots of yoghurt

akarucker · 16/06/2013 19:46

TIP I love to read your 'say it how it is' posts. Thanks

Talkinpeace · 16/06/2013 19:49

subtle, moi Grin

LikeaHurricaine · 16/06/2013 19:57

cupcake psylium husk from any decent health food shop will help you with the lack of movement. Two teaspoons in warm water every day followed by more water should do the trick. I have always suffered with a slow digestive tract tbh and it has sorted me out for sure

Hello everyone, delurking at last Grin. I've actually been with you since thread 6 and started 5 to 2 on 3rd December. I'm 5'6 and weighed 9 st 12 when I started. I now bounce between 8 st 12 and 9 stone and have lost 4 inches off my waist which is where I carry most of my fat. I'm small framed with no bum but I have a fat belly. I'm a work-in progress Wink

ceebeegeebies and peplum we are neighbours, I live on Oakdale Smile

Cupcakexprincessx · 16/06/2013 20:14

Thanks all for replies!

I have always been a slow mover haha, so this has slowed things down even more.

Likeahurricaine I actually have some of those! Forgot I bought them. When do they start to work?

ceebeegeebies · 16/06/2013 20:16

Hurricane - Shock how much of a coincidence is it that 3 of us on this thread all live SO close to each other Shock Shock

Love reading the inspiring stories on here Smile my weight loss is going slow but it is definitely going and I haven't once felt like quitting this WOE which is a first. My clothes are definitely getting looser but still have at least 2 stone to lose so I reckon Christmas is a good target Grin

LikeaHurricaine · 16/06/2013 20:32

cupcake give it a few days and it will kick in. peplum I know, funny isn't it? My loss is slow too, I average half a pound a week but I think that is because I don't really count cals on nfd's and I get a bit pissed on the red every weekend which usually leads to eating shite but I'm happy with that and have no intention of changing my lifestyle because I enjoy myself. I think that is why this woe is sustainable.
I do exercise a lot. I go running and use Jilian Michaels dvd's.
I'm also a keen walker. I'm very happy with my lot tbh Smile

LikeaHurricaine · 16/06/2013 20:43

Sorry, meant ceebeegeebies! Got all over excited in a typical northern lass way Blush
Also just one more thing, my adult acne (I'm 46) has cleared up it would appear. I came of meds for it in Feb as I thought it was worth a try and so far so good!

ceebeegeebies · 16/06/2013 20:44

Totally agree. I think I have been doing this for about 9 weeks (have lost count!) and if I think how much I have eaten over that time on NFDs (3 course meals, copious wine, ben and jerrys, bbqs etc) yet I am shrinking - love love love it Smile yes the weight loss would be quicker if I didn't eat all this stuff but I am enjoying myself aswell as losing weight.

postmanpatscat · 16/06/2013 20:49

I used to have dreadful skin on my chin before starting 5:2, now only get the very occasional spot. However, I also completely changed my skincare routine - no point in anti-ageing stuff while covered in spots, I'd rather be spot free with a few wrinkles!

JB30 · 16/06/2013 20:52

A c25k advocate here & also love Davina dvd's - although I have been neglecting the lovely D (total girl crush - love her!) for the jogging as its so self contained, quick warm up, jog/run, cool down walk done. I went onto 10k training but tbh 5km/3miles x 3 times a week will do me grand. Add in general active'ness, I'm happy with that. Just ended my 16:8 - oh yeah TDEE to the extreme. FD tomorrow, omelette made for lunch, all geared up for a good week.

ceebeegeebies · 16/06/2013 20:53

I am still suffering from adult acne Sad this WOE doesn't seem to have had any impact on that Sad Sad

swallowedAfly · 16/06/2013 21:06

random i know but anyone who thinks they are suffering with adult acne just try a few weeks taking a good 10mg a day antihistamine (i'd go for loratidine). i went through a while of it and tried all sorts then happened to try taking antihistamines and hey presto gone. turned out to be an allergy to something or at least an allergic like reaction despite docs not picking up on it.

obviously might just be me but worth a try.

have managed on a can of sweetcorn which i really, really enjoyed so thinking my body really did want them. going to try to go to sleep as i'm getting head hungry.

postmanpatscat · 16/06/2013 21:07

Mine was clear for ages last year after spending two weeks in Dubai - more fun than lotions and potions or antihistamines! If sun is the answer, that would explain why we're still spotty!

LikeaHurricaine · 16/06/2013 21:08

JB30 I love Davina too! Totally get the girl crush, ha ha! Have you got Davina Intense? It's brilliant, can highly reccomend.
I have been a runner for a number of years now. 9 years ago I was diagnosed with Graves' disease which involves an over active thyroid. I was very slim as a result. Subsequently following the removal of my thyroid via radio iodine I went from a small size 8 to a size 14 in about 6 months as I carried on eating whatever I wanted as I had done previously. So I trained for and completed 5 half marathons and then completed two full marathonsSmile. I lost weight but nothing like the results of 5 to 2. Nothing has ever tackled my belly fat the way this woe appears to be doing.I don't run as long distances these days, tend to stick to 8 miles ish but usually fell run.

ceebeegeebies · 16/06/2013 21:17

The only things that have worked for me was antibiotics but can't stay on them indefinitely and as soon as I stop taking them, the spots return or benzoyl peroxide which I used for 18 months with superb results but the brand I used was discontinued and I have not found another type that really works so the spots are back Sad

tryinghard2 · 16/06/2013 21:32

dotty342kids thankyou :) i should have said i am doing 43 though, hope to gradually move down to 52! and im 5'4, forgot to put that too!

it is really nice to hear how everyone is doing, keeps you going :)

SoTiredAgain · 16/06/2013 21:38

I've really struggled with eating the last few days, since Friday's fast day. Well it's either that or since I had my, ahem, tummy bug.

I have found that I don't get as hungry as quickly and I get fuller quickly too. I put the same amount of food on a plate as I always have, and I suddenly realise I am full, eat a few more mouthfuls because that can't be right and then realise that, yes, if I eat another spoon/forkful, I really am going to be sick. I have been leaving about a quarter of my plate.

I take it this is normal?
