The 5:2 Thread number 21! Soaking up the Sunshine

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Fast day number three today. The last two I ate breakfast and lunch then nothing. Found it awful. Today I am having nothing til dinner then 500 cals. Feels so much easier! I've always been afraid to go without breakfast but it is ok so far. Eaten three cherry toms but have seen they are only ten cals.
I wonder if counting your TDEEs is counter productive. They don't seem to mention it on the official website...
And if it's put monster off so much.

angelabbie · 13/06/2013 12:50

Hi monster, I am having the exact same problem, I have drastically cut down my calories on normal days as well as fast days and after two weeks I have not lost a thing. Prior to that I tried 18/8 for two weeks so in four weeks nada. I did lose a couple of pounds but it went straight back on again after the weekend. I am going to give it another two weeks and see what happens. Good luck monster.

Does anybody have a motivational success story?

Twinmama32 · 13/06/2013 13:11

Thanks Dotty I'm clinging onto that little nugget of wisdom! Although to be honest I think, even if I don't budge for months more, I may still carry on because, even though I'm desperate to lose weight and need to lose 1.5-2 stone still, I'm intrinsically much happier on this Woe, and I am eating better and waaaaay less than before so I'm clearly learning something!

Stalls are a b!£ch though Smile

virginposter · 13/06/2013 13:13

monster
I have been doing 5:2/4:3 since last August and together with a 7lb loss before then, have lost 30lbs.
Not once did I check or log on my NFD's - only on my fast days. I just ate healthily but also allowed treats when I needed them. Sometimes I didn't eat enough and my weight loss stalled so I upped my calories and lost again.
May I suggest that you take a week or so off and as suggested by others, eat healthily but with some treats, then come back and give it another go. This time only log your fast days and see if this time it works for you. I think that sometimes we over complicate things as the premise of 5:2 is to restrict on 2 days only. Imo it's more like a 'diet' if you keep checking every day so it's no wonder you are fed up.
It's nearly 11 months and I'm maintaining now by just being sensible and when I've had 'treats' the next day I eat 'sensibly' and I'm still enjoying it.
Hope this helps.

meandmyfour · 13/06/2013 13:17

Monster I feel just like you. Started this woe in mid April, lost a few pounds initially (three or four) and have bounced around ever since. Having had a fairly healthy relationship with food I now feel a bit obsessed and preoccupied by what I am or am not eating and the blinking number on the scales. hadn't owned scales for years and years until two months ago and the numbers really get me down when, after a day of not eating, there's barely any change. I haven't fasted this week...dont' want to give up but really don't want to spend every day obsessing about food. I find the nfd's harder than the fast days...

monster54 · 13/06/2013 14:22

Thanks spababe I have been doing this some almost 4 months now and the last 6 weeks have stuck the same.

I just the motivation now. I started this to lose weight yes yes yes I know all the long termers will go on about the health benefits etc etc but I'll be honest as appealing as they are I only starve myself 2 days a week to lose weight!!!

crystal I think it was you that suggested to look at the offical page and I did. It advises ADF for a couple of weeks to try and get things moving again.

I'm not 100% 'there' in my mind as I feel a little disappointed about the struggle the last few weeks.

So I think I plan to have a week off and then give ADF a try to see if that can start things again. I might regret that choice and end up putting on as soon as I go back to 5:2 but seriously not happy at this weight either.

emily i'm there....so sick of counting this and counting that...

So a week off and then back to ADF and I will not count on NFD just eat sensibly.

Good luck to all those that are stalling too and well done everyone who is losing. Hopefully we all get to our happy place!!!

vieenrose · 13/06/2013 16:57

lymegeris, meandmyfour, monster

My advice is to stay away from the scales as much as possible and count on your NSV for encouragement.
I started this WOE in Jan and have lost over 24 pounds. I don't know how much exactly because I only weigh myself every six weeks or so at the gym. But today, I went and bought myself a size 10 pair of jeans (I can hardly believe I'm writing this) and have now officially dropped 4 sizes.
I don't calorie count on NFD anymore but I generally eat within TDEE during the week and go way over board at the weekends. I'm 46 and have gone on numerous diets only to fail miserably after a while. For the first time since I had DC (my eldest is 9 years old) I feel good about myself. I hope this helps. Cheers everybody and good luck to fasters

Emilythornesbff · 13/06/2013 17:18

Making chips in the actifry for ds and dh.
Just that really.

Daisybell1 · 13/06/2013 18:23

Monster, I think a week off will do you a world of good. And may just be the boost your metabolism needs. I hope your week off is enjoyable!

spababe · 13/06/2013 18:26

vieenrose thank you!

ELR · 13/06/2013 18:34

Thanks for the update emily! Loved your comment this morning about the 'bastard' full English.
monster I have been about the same or the last 6 weeks bouncing up and down a few pounds. But I look at it this way if I wasn't doing 5:2 I may have gained weight in those 6 weeks instead of maintaining. Also I have enjoyed my nfd eating loads of yummy food, don't lose heart. I also had a weeks holiday where I didn't fast and I haven't gained so it may be a good idea to take a break but put it down on your calendar when you intend to start 5:2 again. Good luck.

ELR · 13/06/2013 18:36

Feeling almost full after a veg stir fry, half a nest of noodles and a baked salmon fillet.

MelanieCheeks · 13/06/2013 18:55

Mmmm, steamed sea bass with ginger and mushrooms!

Emilythornesbff · 13/06/2013 19:36

vieenrose great nsv with those jeans and an inspirational post.

ELR your supper sounds good. I'm guessing this is a fast day.

I have successfully dodged all food (apart from some milk in 2 coffees and one tea) today. It's been tough because of the presence of food everywhere but I actually found it easier than eating a 500 cal meal. I ^always^ want something sweet after any meal so it's hard to stop once I start eating.

So my theory behind nothing to eat rather than a 500 cal meal is that on a NFD I think I tend to eat crap. I look forward to things like toast, which someone else nealy described as a "gateway" carb. True.
Now I'm hoping that the absence of food today is making me look forward to something healthy as I didn't have tht today IYSWIM.
Well, we'll see. Grin

Yogurt and fruit for breakfast is probably a good start.
We'll see.Grin

Endofmyfeather · 13/06/2013 19:48

monster I've read your struggles over the past weeks and really understand your frustration - just wanna throw this out there - have you thought about getting checked out at the doctors (sorry if you have and I've missed it). It sounds like you've been really sticking to it 100% for 6 weeks now (and you aren't on a 'plateau' as such from longer term weight loss), so maybe there's an underlying medical reason that might be worth checking out.

Not trying to scaremonger at all - and hope you don't mind me suggesting it - but sometimes there are reasons why our body seems to be working against us, and occasionally that's a medical reason.

Hope you feel better about it all, whatever you decide to do.

horseylady · 13/06/2013 20:01

I've just finished my first fast day!! Well nearly finished lol!!

Had 472 calories according to mfp.

Can I ask a dumb question, to lose weight I want the lower daily calorie number? As well as the fast days or the higher number?

Emilythornesbff · 13/06/2013 20:07

Well done horselady
If you eat fewer calories you will lose weight.
The problem with restricting cals is that it's so difficult to stick to. Wall falloff the wagon at some point.
Which is why "diets don't work" and seems to be one of the reasons that 5:2 tends to work.

JB30 · 13/06/2013 20:36

Did an ok day yesterday - mini fast of 840 (I don't know if that constitutes a mini fast but hey ho) And today did a proper day of what I thought was 520 but I forgot a skinny white coffee so if I'm honest..eh...probably 580? Friday wine bought and winking at me from the kitchen but I shall not give in! I shall be strong for another 22 hours ;)
Feel like making up my own serenity prayer..oh lord pls give me the strength to not eat my body weight in chocolate/crisps and confuse hydration with wine'dration over the next 2 days, lest I undo all the good I did during my weekly starvation, I mean fasts! Theres a weekend every week, why oh why do I seem determined to treat is as my own 2 day last supper
Love reading all the posts ladies, so much encouragement here

lymeregis · 13/06/2013 21:46

vieenrose, and all thanks for the advice, very helpful

Got through the fast day today. Lentil soup and a piece of banana bread.

going to try and do another tomorrow as planning a mini blow out at the weekend.

horseylady · 13/06/2013 22:07

emily I understand that. I don't Plan on sticking rigidly to calories every day, hence fasting, I was just wondering what was what?! There a 600 cal difference?!

fluffypillow · 13/06/2013 22:13

Hi all Smile

Fasted today. Went really well, quite an easy one.

After my blow out chinese on Tuesday night which lead to a 3lb gain yesterday Blush , stepped on the scales this morning and it had gone again............back to where I was on Tuesday morning. So happy about that and want to eat another chinese

Emily are you doing a zero fast today? sorry haven't read much on here today. I don't think I could do that just yet. I really look forward to my dinner on a fast day, although must admit, I'm not as 'desperate' for food on fast days as I used to be, so maybe I will give it a go at some point if the losses stop. Let us know how it goes.

monster you sound so fed up with the whole thing. Maybe a little break will do you good, and may even kick start your loss again. Hope you are ok Thanks

horseylady congrats on your first fast. The first one is always the hardest. Well done Smile

Good luck to all the Friday fasters Thanks Have a good day tomorrow everyone Smile

Emilythornesbff · 13/06/2013 22:13

H sorry. I think I've misunderstood your question.

EagleRiderDirk · 13/06/2013 22:20

Accidentally did 16:8 today 16:10 at mo. Suddenly became 11:30 so decided to wait till lunch to eat. Decided that meant I could have a yummy dessert tonight. Well my raspberries are still in the fridge and ice cream still in the freezer. Got stuffed on a normal portion of dinner, so appetite waning again. Yay! Well yay except for the missed dessert.

Well done all fasters, especially first timers today.

MelanieCheeks · 13/06/2013 22:29

Horseylady what are the 2 calorie values you refer to?
