The 5:2 Thread number 21! Soaking up the Sunshine

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

I cracked Sad

Got home starving so scoffed an Asda sultana pancake. Then some spoons of rice whilst cooking DD's tea. Then my tea.

Oh dear.

Daisybell1 · 12/06/2013 22:03

Ooh, its not as bad as I feared, 600 cals all in for my first FD (I am worried that I cheated too much as I felt a bit full....)

Thanks for all the support earlier. I'm not sure when I'll do another FD as I'm in work again tomorrow but after that I'm at home with a toddler and a farmer to feed. So it may be NFDs now until next Tuesday and Thursday.

SoTiredAgain · 12/06/2013 22:07

Well done on your first fd daisybell. Smile

Twinmama32 · 12/06/2013 22:10

peplum I've stalled since beginning of may, bouncing from 12.8 to 12.6, yesterday I glimpsed 12.4.8 but I've had an upset stomach for two days so I suspect it's not a true loss. Like you although I've not lost any, everything feels, fits and looks looser, although this is great in itself I really want to see 12 stone because then I can begin to dream of being in the 11s, now it still feels a touch out of reach.

So odd isn't it? I think it's hard if you've had a steady loss previuosly and your method hasn't changed. The only thing I can think of is that I've lost 11% of my weight and perhaps my body is clinging on in fear that ill lose more, ha ha body in for a big shock if I get my way Grin

I suppose patience is the key here...

ceebeegeebies · 12/06/2013 22:22

peplum we are practically neighbours - I am in Lower Darwen Shock am wondering now if I know you??

Welcome to the newbies. Fasting definitely does get easier. I am still not at the stage where I wake up and think 'yey it is a fasting day' but they are not as traumatic as they used to be Smile

fluffypillow · 12/06/2013 22:27

Ok, so went out with DH last night to celebrate our Anniversary. We had a massive chinese (sooooooo yummy). I also topped it off with a huge banana fritter with syrup Blush My plan was to 'go easy', but that didn't happen Grin

It was the first real blow out I've had since I started this WOE 7 weeks ago, and I really enjoyed it, but this morning I felt rubbish Sad I gained 3lbs overnight. I deserve it, just hope it won't stick around for too long.

On a positive note, it hasn't made me fall off the wagon like I would have done when I was dieting. Today I have stuck to my TDEE, and actually feel really good now.

Fasting tomorrow, so that will hopefully undo some of the damage!

All that being said, I've had 3 NSVs ;

I was in a shop looking for a new, SMALLER belt (NSV no.1) to hold up my new SMALLER jeans (NSV no.2) and I turned the corner to come face to face with a full lengh mirror (don't have one at home. I got rid of the one in my bedroom when we redecorated years ago with no intention the intention of getting an new one, and never did) and I actually thought........... flppin' eck, I do look thinner Grin (NSV no.3)

That perked me up!

Good luck to all fellow fasters tomorrow Smile Have a good Thursday everyone.

Endofmyfeather · 12/06/2013 23:02

JB30 I know it's not funny, but I had to have a little laugh at your phrasing - "one good pig out deserves another". I know exactly where you're coming from Flowers

CrystalDeCanter · 13/06/2013 06:13

Hi all, fluffypillow congratulations on the smaller belt and jeans. Personally, I think a full length mirror is a good investment. I didn't have one for YEARS but we've recently moved into a house with one and I've found out that I looked a right state for oh, approx, the last 5 years!

I'm fasting today and ate very little yesterday (was a NFD - just not very hungry). I'm down 400gs on last week, which I'm pretty happy about. I've had soup for lunch - with added veg, but am now ravenous. I made some Triple Choc Muffins for the kids today and the smell is driving me mad.

Happy fasting to those that are doing it today.

spababe · 13/06/2013 08:28

hello to everyone fasting today

Crystal - put those Muffins in a tin and put the tin in a cupboard Smile

Dotty342kids · 13/06/2013 08:56

twinmama I've read in several places on here, and other sites, that once you lose 10% of your body weight it's normal to stick at that weight for a while before continuing to lose. I'm not sure of the reasons behind it but it's very common so don't lose heart Smile. Those 11s aren't far away!

monster54 · 13/06/2013 09:15

Urrghhh right I've decided this really is no longer working for me. What started out to 'not feel like a diet' feels utterly miserable every day as I am analysising everything I eat and then feeling utterly miserable.

My official weigh in isn't till tomorrow but I had a sneak peek and I am 3LBS UP!!!!

How bloody ridiculous! I have not eaten 3 pounds worth of calories....

I think I need to step away from this forum and the WOL for a little while as right now it feels fruitless and pointless. I count FD's count NFD's....its just not cracking up to how its sold....

EagleRiderDirk · 13/06/2013 09:28

oh monster - so sorry to hear that. it may just be that it doesn't work for you. have a nice break in the very least and hope you get happier

Emilythornesbff · 13/06/2013 09:28

Grin @ jb30.
Great rally of NSVs fluffy. I admit I liked my new slimmer reflection in the mirror in the mothercare lift.

crystal I'm right with you. Fasting today. Bloody muffins! spababe is right. Lock em away Grin

Yesterday's NFD was ridiculous. I ordered a coffee while I was out and was ^forced^ to buy an almond croissant (credit card payment issue). Then I didn't get to have supper with ds so I ate an embarrassing array of carbs over the course of the evening (including but not limited to fruit toast and strawberry ice cream).
Now I am fasting and I have to say I'm not happy about it.
Up since about 5 with ds (dd thankfully seems to be a good little sleeper)
I feel grumpy (poorly nourished and sugared up yesterday?) and have sipped a black coffee while cooking a bastard "full English" for dh and ds. (masochism?).

I really wish I could gain better control on NFDs. I think it's a planning issue. Hmm.

EagleRiderDirk · 13/06/2013 09:32

Had a weird moment yesterday. Looking for something on facebook (I get that dim at low B12 that sometimes I have to check facebook to see what I was doing Blush) and noticed I'd made a comment about my BMI back in December. I realised that I must have put on over 10kg in less than 5 months. I wasn't eating that badly. Long story short, it seems that the drugs I've been put on for my dodgy SI joints are well known for excessive weight gain Angry

I suppose it did me a favour, I may not have been spurred on to start this woe if it hadn't. Am hoping that when I can finally come off them (and I'm not sure its soon) I may have a nice weight drop too.

Dotty342kids · 13/06/2013 09:38

monster I'm sorry to hear that too but if it's making you miserable then you definitely need to have a break! Just try to focus on eating foods that are good and nourishing and give yourself a rest from obsessing about it all and hopefully you'll feel much more positive and relaxed soon Smile
We'll miss you though!

monster54 · 13/06/2013 09:43

Thanks dotty I just think its a lot of pain to starve yourself for 2 days and get nothing out of it.

I've got weight to lose so thats not an issue.

I just don't think the concept is as simple and effective as it likes to be 'sold'

CrystalDeCanter · 13/06/2013 09:55

Monster, sorry it's all making you feel miserable. But as your following all the rules AND not losing weight then no wonder you're hacked off with it all. I'd be bloody livid. Although the fasting is managable i'm not yet finding it pleasant. If it wasn't working for me I'd dump it.

Have you thought about posting on the 5:2 website forum thefastdiet.co.uk/forums/ to see if there is any other advice? I dunno - logically it makes sense that if you cut your calories intake by 2/7ths then one would loose weight but perhaps there is more to it?

Enjoy the break.

Bramblesinforrin · 13/06/2013 10:05

Monster, I have just got back from holiday and a break from 5:2 to find that I haven't put weight on. This is notable, because I was in France and on pastries and booze. I was expecting to come back heavier. However, what I also did was change what I was eating - lots more salads and fruit, lots more water and loads of walking. Somehow I think that that has helped. I had plateaued for weeks, but I think it will start to shift again soon (got to hope!). I hope you find something that helps.

lymeregis · 13/06/2013 10:23

Hello everyone, may I join?

I had a blow out yesterday way over TDEE, not the plan but there it is, and I am on my second fast today.

Feeling hungry and planning lentil soup for later this evening.

zombiebanana · 13/06/2013 10:39

Hello, I've been lurking but I thought I'd say hello...

Been thinking about doing 5:2 for a while. I have a DS of 10 months, still BFing but only two or three times a day (and that's variable, depending who's looking after him).

Today is my first fast day! So far (10.32am) I have had 1 cup of black decaf coffee and one cup of weak tea without milk, as well as a few glasses of water. I am winging it... didn't plan a menu... I am reluctant to start eating in case it triggers my stomach to get annoyed that it's empty (I've usually eaten breakfast twice by this point, first a bowl of cereal and then a bacon sarnie or similar, because DS rises around 5am). Surprisingly easy so far...

Experienced 5:2ers... do you find it is easier to spread out calories over the day, or save them and have them all in one meal at the end of the day? I am trying the second approach today, it seems better to avoid food altogether than to have a little taster.

skylerwhite · 13/06/2013 11:30

Hello everybody

Fasting today - and am going to try a zero calorie fast as my DH is away until tomorrow night. I've been hovering at 9st2 despite a FD on Tues, and despite exercising every day. Hoping that 24/36 hours without food will kickstart the losing again.

On another note, I went up to Jillian Michaels Ripped in 30 Level 2 yesterday - jeepers that is tough! I had to pause the video so many times just to figure out what she was actually doing. So many planks Sad
But I have to say, that after a week of Level 1, with a few 4 mile runs thrown in, that I am seeing results already. My arms are way more toned, my stomach is less wobbly, and my thighs are solid. Yay!

zombiebanana my experience is that it's easier to save all calories until the evening meal, but you should experiment and find what works best for you.

Good luck to everybody fasting today.

zombiebanana · 13/06/2013 11:40

11.40am - 2 x rice cakes.

spababe · 13/06/2013 12:15

monster if you are still reading this thread, I found the first couple of weeks tough and put on weight. I have started loosing now and I think it's because I'm doing 30-60 minute walk each say and I'm trying not to go too mad on NFDs. I do log calories on NFDs and I'm usually over by 100-200 but it gives me an idea of what I can eat on NFDs and I think once I have this in your head, I won't have to count the NFDs. I'm also more lax on weekend NFDs to weekday NFDs. Hope this helps you and you give it another go.

Emilythornesbff · 13/06/2013 12:40

Struggling today. monster I hear you.
Fasting days seem to come around too often and I'm a bit fed up with thinking about what to eat on NFDs. I think that's the trouble with losing weight though. I mean, if it was that easy everybody would be doing it Grin
I think part of the trouble forme is that I'm always having to feed other ppl. Meal planning for ds and a fussy dh as well as ebf. So, I'm happy to do all that but there's not much room left in my head for my food needs IYSWIM. Lots of the foods I like and would be "healthy" no one else wants and I cba to do yet another meal.
So. Aiming for total fast today (might allow milk in tea) just to escape that hunger monster.

Emilythornesbff · 13/06/2013 12:42

Hey zombie.
Good luck with your fast.
I usually eat nothing until soup for supper.
As soon as I start I want to keep eating and I find it all too easy to tip over 500.
