The 5:2 Thread number 21! Soaking up the Sunshine

BetsyBell · 04/06/2013 09:04

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Well done miffy

betsy good luck with your fast today.

PPC I was thinking about your post. (clearly no life of my own Grin) It's easy for us to read things into your DP's comments that might not be there. It's entirely possible that he wants you to just be happy with what you've achieved isn't it? Or that he's bolstering your dd, helping her to see that she doesn't need to be very thin to look healthy and good. At your weight you'll be looking really nice and slim but as you said, you were also looking good a few months/ pounds ago.

So It's a NFD today for me. Trying to keep it healthy.
Fasting tomorrow. I really think that a total fast is in order Hmm

Dotty342kids · 12/06/2013 10:42

Betsy, yes, fantastic holiday thank you. Morocco is fab!
I just want to get back to some "normal" eating habits this week as am feeling all out of my usual routine if you know what I mean? So, fast today, normal nfd tomorrow and then a poss fast on Friday because the kids are away this weekend so will be out eating and drinking with DH on Sat Smile
Poor you having to bake at end of a fast day. Suggest take out of oven and go straight to bed to resist temptation to taste!

Goldenhandshake · 12/06/2013 11:07

Hi all, today is my 3rd fast day, I am feeling much ore positive about it after my loss last week Smile

EagleRiderDirk · 12/06/2013 11:20

Had a horrible nights sleep last night, not fast day related but B12 pins and needles/dead limbs related. Need to get through till 4pm without killing my kids in the meantime! Oddly feel worse today not fasting...

After reading all the breath smelling posts, I've been and brushed, flossed and mouthwashed!!!!

Daisybell1 · 12/06/2013 12:14

I may need your support.

After reading a friend's fb update about her fast day, a night's insomnia and waking up feeling icky from hayfever I've decided to have my first FD!

I've made it till now on 2 cups of black tea and water but now I'm hungry Sad I've budgeted for a ham and egg plain salad for lunch - is this ok?

monster54 · 12/06/2013 13:41

Well first FD of the week done yesterday. I was a little over in the end. I know this will be very trivial to a lot of people but we lost one of our pet chickens, so was v upset and consoled myself with an unscheduled 2 finger kit kat!!!!

NFD today and going well so far, another naughty kit kat issued at a training event and then a nice healthy soup for lunch.

Dinner is a bit of an unknown but still got about 1000 cals left for the day!!

I feel a little on edge now though, that if I don't loose this week then I will give up all hope and fall completely off the wagon. I'm tracking etc and keeping an eye on the cals.....I suppose just keep plodding on till Friday and see what that holds!

IDismyname · 12/06/2013 13:45

Hi Daisybell1

As long as you stick to your 500 cals max for today, you can eat what you like when you like!

However - a lot of us like to wait until late afternoon/ evening to eat our 500 cals in one go. Eating breakfast or lunch seems to kick start the appetite - but everyone is different.

See how you go - you'll get the hang of it after a few weeks and work out what suits you the best.

Happy fasting!

Dotty342kids · 12/06/2013 14:00

WElcome on board Daisy. Please be assured that fasting days do get easier! Your lunch sounds typically "diet food" to me Smile. What I mean by that is that this way of eating really tries to move us away from dieting foods / behaviours into something much more long term and sustainable. I know if I ate that on a fast day it'd just really depress me Grin
So, I just don't eat breakfast or lunch on fast days but plan a really tasty, nice dinner. Tonight for example I'm having a big bowl of vegetable chilli with brown rice and a dollop of natural yoghurt. Many of us find that strong flavours and tastes really help to liven up our fast day dinners.

Good luck and let us know how you're getting on

Twinmama32 · 12/06/2013 14:26

peplum yes you're right losing weight is extremely hard almost impossible if you try 'normal' diets and exercise alone alongside pcos.... It took me 9 months last time to lose 2 stone and that was with the aid of a diet pill and copious exercise, it wasn't easy or pretty and something I'd never repeat however I just couldn't get the weight off on my own. HOWEVER, 5:2 has proved, to me at least!, that you can lose weight with pcos and its not such an unreasonable struggle Smile and you absolutely don't have to take a diet pill.

With regards to maintaining or plateau-ing I have no idea! I'm well and truly stuck at this weight at the moment. I rechecked my mfp settings and realised that for the last 4 months I've had it set on losing a pound a week, oops! So when I changed it it adjusted all my previous cal deficits and some weeks I'm over 4000 cal in deficit so goodness knows why it's not budging. I'm certainly no angel on nfds that's for sure Blush

How about you peplum any wiser?

saf hope you're recovering we'll and resting as much as you can Flowers

Dotty342kids · 12/06/2013 14:50

twinmama, if your daily cal allowance was set too low then that might well explain why no weight has budged as there hasn't been the same level of "swing" between fasting and non fasting days.
Once you're eating up to your full TDEE and that difference in daily intakes is more marked, then hopefully the weight loss will kick back in Smile

Twinmama32 · 12/06/2013 14:56

Yes Dotty hopefully you're right, although my cal allowance is now 2070 and before it was 1800 so not a huge diff and I always eat up to or way over my tdee . Anyway here's hoping!

peplum41 · 12/06/2013 15:32

twinmama mmm think what you could do with that 4000 cal deficit, that's good maths btw. Ive been tracking, a tad half heartedly admittedly, but not over or under, usually about right. I haven't lost weight since late April, but some jeans I bought around the same time were just a bit too tight. I had to buy a belt for them the other day. People are starting to notice, and I keep track of measurements, which are dropping. Something is going on, I am shrinking, but the scales are bobbing up and down between 11:9 and 11:13. Hmm How long have you been stuck?

betsy, thanks for your tip, I think. Feel like a right old minger now, will add flossing to my oral hygiene routine.

Daisybell1 · 12/06/2013 15:54

Thank you for the welcome. Dotty I know what you mean but I was pleasantly surprised at the calories including the salad cream so I had that too Grin . Once the protein kicked in I've felt fine!

Dinner is roasted chicken breast with rattatoui (or however it's spelt) which will take me just over the 500 calories mark.

Dotty342kids · 12/06/2013 15:57

Yum, sounds nice Daisy!

EggInABap · 12/06/2013 16:00

Thanks all for your helpful suggestions! It's so nice that I don't feel the need to beat myself up about going over by a hundred calories. The same on any other diet would have brought on a full on binge!

Day 3 and I'm feeling good, feel like I've lost a bit already! Having a nice haloumi wrap tonight and a choccy bar. Is this really a diet? Grin

BetsyBell · 12/06/2013 16:03

Hi Daisybell your lunch sounds good - doesn't have to be plain though, I pep mine up with a small spoon plain yogurt, lemon juice & pepper and ideally some fresh herbs, plus green beans, cucumber or whatever I've got to hand. I almost always spilt my calories between 2 meals (lunch and early supper) so just find what works best for you.

peplum I may preach but I rarely practise! Put up the flossing tip to remind myself too. Blush

IMPORTANT NEWS FLASH

I am wearing a belt.

That is all.

Carry on as usual

Grin
Goldenhandshake · 12/06/2013 17:35

Hi all, today has gone very well, mainly beacuse I am ludicrously busy at work. Breakfast was an apple. Lunch lettuce, beetroot, 2 thin slices of turkey, cucumber, a tablespoon of cottage cheese and some stir fried peppers and baby corn, plus half a cup of sweet potato and lentil soup.

Plus a few teas throughout the day.

I have about 185 cals left according to MFP so am having some of my homemade spring veg soup and a small slice of bread for dinner when I get home.

Dotty342kids · 12/06/2013 18:10

I'm guessing you're pleased by that scenario EagleRiderDirk? In which case............... congratulations!

EagleRiderDirk · 12/06/2013 18:14

Haha. Yes dotty its been quite some time since I've required a belt so very happy

angelabbie · 12/06/2013 18:18

Hi everyone and hope your day is gong well. I am on my third fast day and its been the easiest by far. I have just eaten a tin of M&S chicken and noodle soup which was really yummy for 140 cals and a low fat shepards pie which was 360 cals and am feeling nice and full. Off for an hour of zumba later having just joined my local gym. I have also joined MFP but I do not know how to set the cals as TDEE which is 1700 cals for me any ideas??

angelabbie · 12/06/2013 18:39

oh oh I did it !!!

BetsyBell · 12/06/2013 18:47

Eaglerider As in your trousers fall down without? Grin

I've failed on my fast this evening (wine was necessary) so we're calling this a mini fast. I'll do a mini fast on Friday too and then that sort of equals one fast. Yeah I know it doesn't really work like that but better than nothing Grin

Meal-wise I've done ok, just the additional wine...

Oh apart from the bit where I had to lick the cake spoon and bowl during my baking session. Oh. Blush

Ah well, I'll do better next week.

Hello to all the fellow newbies.

Am feeling quite poorly. Seem to have acquired a tummy bug. Non fast day today but can't face dinner Sad. I may have a bowl of cereal later but can't even think about it right now.

JB30 · 12/06/2013 19:48

Well my Monday FD was an unmitigated disaster! Did great all day then decided toast (seriously toast) with a little butter for dinner would be ok - it fell within my 500 cals. Toast & butter, aka gateway drug to all manner of crap, chocolate & crisps. Raging. Anyway, had mega feast day yesterday as one good pig out deserves another. Got my sh1t together today, did a run, have done mini fast (about 850 cals) and tomorrow will be true 500 cal day.
Also seriously/scarily thinking of no wine this weekend - wine is my other gw drug. Am I strong enough, I just don't know and that scares me, feel like a bit of an alkie :/
