The 5:2 Thread number 21! Soaking up the Sunshine

BetsyBell · 04/06/2013 09:04

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

peachy it really helps at first to be busy as possible on fast days. And if you're thinking of any certain food, remember these words: I can have it tomorrow!

newbiefrugalgal · 10/06/2013 21:16

Fast day over. Soup and very small pasta for dinner.
Gym class this morning.
Feeling great but I know my body will be sore tomorrow from the class.
Yeah to me!

postmanpatscat · 10/06/2013 22:06

fluffy well done on your achievements so far and karaoke on your run too.

sklyer 8st 7 sounds perfectly achieveable, I made it there from 10st although I was always under 9st (and even under 8st) pre DC. They are 15 and 13 now so can't call it baby weight! I went back to about 8.7 after DC1 and have been under 9st many times since but the difference is that this time I know I can stay there!

Fast day for me today, which I managed even though I was leading a school trip for 60 5-6 year olds today! Mind you, didn't have time to eat properly, that helped... Even went out for a run when I got home

saf welcome back and get well soon Flowers

Emilythornesbff · 10/06/2013 22:17

Well done newbie

saf Thanks

ppc impressive.

fluffypillow · 10/06/2013 23:00

peachypips Like others have said, it does get easier. Give it a few weeks and your confidence will grow. I try to think of it as skipping breakfast and lunch, rather than fasting. Your body will adjust to this woe very quickly, and that will help.

Remember, just be strong today, and you can eat tomorrow. Trust me, you will feel great in the morning after a successful fast day.

Hang in there Smile

fluffypillow · 10/06/2013 23:03

Thank you postmanpatscat and thank you to all the others who have sent 'well dones!' It means alot Smile and spurs me on.

TIP I have PCOS and have been doing 5:2 since beg feb, I've lost 22Ibs, the most I've ever lost since being diagnosed 7 yrs ago. I'd say the majority of my symptoms have lessened, I do however still get the odd ovary pain but it somehow feels more manageable and not quite so crippling than before, prob because my hormones are more levelled out now. I used to take metformin for pcos which was excellent for controlling hormones, although it is a diabetes drug and I am not diabetic pcos sufferers can take it because it works (although they are not 100% sure why). Also I was recommended to do a low gi diet which is also meant to help. Personally I've found this more effective however everyone's different.
Weight loss definitely improves on the symptoms of pcos in the same way that weight gain exacerbates it. Best of luck to your friend Smile

Breadandwine · 11/06/2013 00:02

breadandwine & peplum - is the fact that you are a Rovers supporter (poor you ) a clue to where you live/lived?? As I 'may' live in that area myself

CBGbies I was born and brought up in the streets described here. My mum and dad were both weavers when they met, but ended up with a baker's shop - right on the corner of one of the streets described in the book. It's a great read for anybody - but especially for someone who knows the area.

As for yourself - I'm guessing Sunny Bower? Great Harwood? Oswaldthwistle? Grin

Breadandwine · 11/06/2013 00:09

That should read, of course, Oswaldtwistle! Blush

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 11/06/2013 05:56

Emily, what are you doing setting MFP to weight loss? That won't work, don't pay any attention to that 1200 cals calculator. Go back and set it to maintainance and I bet it comes out better.

(That was my faux bossy tone, not my obnoxious expert one. I hope)

Glad to hear you're on the mend, SAF.

CrystalDeCanter · 11/06/2013 07:16

Hello everyone, I'm fasting today and y'know what it's not too bad. I think this is my 5th fast and it does seem to get easier. It's almost 4pm here and I've had only liquids, actually it's a bit of a relief from all the eating I've done over the Aussie long weekend.

I'm not sure I've lost any weight tho. I think I might need to take myself in hand on my nfd's. mind you I am wearing a tight pencil skirt today and it looks ok!

swallowedAfly · 11/06/2013 07:23

morning all. got on the scales out of curiosity this morning and they still say 10.8. not sure what they should say. i effectively had a 36hr fast due to anaesthetic and obviously i've had some weight 'removed' in surgery but then again i've been pumped full of gas and drugs and my digestion is not exactly back on board yet.

see where i am in a week i guess. currently sporting a great big bloated tummy.

good luck to all fasters today.

ceebeegeebies · 11/06/2013 07:32

breadandwine I am much nearer Ewood Park than any of those areas you have mentioned...within walking distance Wink neither me or DH are originally from the area but moved here when we got married 16 years ago and have settled now Smile although with DH being a Burnley supporter he has banned the DC from becoming Rovers fans like their school friends Wink

EagleRiderDirk · 11/06/2013 07:33

So the time has come for me to weigh once a week. Bounced up again whilst waist measure dropped and I can see the improvement in my self. Last time this happened I dropped the bounce and more come Friday so will desperately try to weigh once a week.

saf don't torture yourself like that, right now you have swelling and post surgical bloat. Try your best to eat healthy and weigh again in a few weeks x

Itsaboatjack · 11/06/2013 08:07

Well the 8lbs that I managed to put on over the weekend has all gone this morning. Very odd, I think it must have been my scales just playing silly buggers.

saf hope you are feeling well. I must admit I would be on the scales too, just to see. Did they say how much they removed? I would imagine (have no actual knowledge you understand), that post surgery swelling would be retaining a lot of water too.

Have a good day everyone. Not fasting today, but am still sticking to no snacking.

fluffypillow · 11/06/2013 08:59

Hello saf nice to see you back.

eagle those bounces really mess with your head Confused I would love to be able to weigh just once a week, but the scales call me every morning noon and night

itsa boat I didn't think that 8lbs would stick! Must have been a relief to see them drop again this morning, that's great. I try not to snack either, and find it really helps. I like to 'wake my hunger monster' 3 times a day, and then let him go soundly back to sleep! If I graze and snack all day that bad boy won't leave me alone Grin

Dotty342kids · 11/06/2013 09:35

saf can't imagine any weigh in will be truly representative whilst you're all swollen and recovering from surgery but can't blame you for wanting a peek just in case!!

istaboat thank goodness for that Grin

Emilythornesbff · 11/06/2013 09:43

tortoise Grin I know!
It looked so mean. And then after I'd logged my NFD food (no snacking and no lunch) I'd already gone over. Gin
Just shows how easy it is to gain weight.
NFD today but I'm planning on skipping lunch for efficiency and a boost.

Crunchymunchyhoneycakes · 11/06/2013 09:47

Hello all, just introducing myself, I did my second fast yesterday after a rough start where I gave myself food poisoning the day of my first fast!!! Glad to say yesterday was fine, I felt great actually, really sharp and alert. Had couscous, roasted veg and chicken for my tea and then saved my last 50 calories for an apple just before bed. Woke up this morning and didn't even feel particularly hungry although have to say I was quite wakeful during the night. Know I should really only weigh weekly but had a sneaky look this morning and have lost just under 2 lb already!

Was wondering, do most people count calories on non fast days or not? I use MFP on and off anyway so will use it for fast days but just wondered whether to bother or not. Sometimes I feel if I monitor my intake to closely it makes me a bit food obsessed and actually more likely to overeat crap.

EagleRiderDirk · 11/06/2013 09:59

crunch welcome. Food poisoning sucks, I did it to myself a few weeks ago! I use mfp all the time, but it suits me and I'm still not great (but getting better) at judging the calories in things. If you've been using it before you may already have that instinct anyway, and if it makes you twitchy its prob best to avoid unless you need to analyse your intake.

BetsyBell · 11/06/2013 10:03

Hello Crunchy I just saw your other thread so I'm glad food poisoning hasn't scared you off!

I counted calories on non fast days to begin with to get an idea of calories in my usual food types, now I don't bother (though I probably should as I'm over doing it more often than not these days - been on this WOE for 6 months!). I agree with you about it making you feel food/diet obsessed but it's worth doing it for a bit just to get an idea of what your TDEE allowance looks like.

I just wanted to update as I popped back to say I was pg and input on continuing with 5-2 as been on it since August as got to 8st12. I've now put on to just over 9 but bmi 22 so that's great. I've spoken with, GP, obstetric consultant (as I've have prev gest diabetes so automatically under him), diabetic nurses for pregnant women, and midwife. All support me continuing 5-2 and I've upped fast day to 600 cal as I'm also still bfing dd. I'm making sure I drink enough. Testing bloods 4x a day and all good so far. Will keep you updated as I know there limited research on the affects etc in pregnancy

Dotty342kids · 11/06/2013 10:20

Weighed in this morning. All been a bit chaotic as came back from hols last Tuesday night, did a fast day on Thursday and then have been ill from Friday onwards with some sort of tummy thing. Still not fully over that so have been eating very little anyway - inadvertent fasting I suppose Smile
Anyway, back to pre holiday weight of 10st 8lbs which is exactly one stone lost since I started mid Feb. Happy with that. Going to carry on and see what happens but no particular goal in mind at the moment.

monster54 · 11/06/2013 10:29

Morning ladies...

Glad all went well saf hope you have a speedy recovery.

Was meant to be a FD yesterday but got called off as a friend surprised me for lunch. So back on the wagon today.

Really rough night with DC so feeling super tired at work today.....

The morning will be powered by COFFEE lol and lots of it.

I am seriously ready to get rid of another few pounds now. I was back to my low on Friday so I'm ready to start losing again....hopefully this is my week to get off my stall!!!

Breadandwine · 11/06/2013 11:04

BuntCadger that's so good to hear! Hope everything continues to go well. My daughter is pg (I was going to add, ATM - but that's a bit superfluous! Grin) and has stopped 5:2ing. I'll certainly relay your experience.

But pg and bf! That's a first for these threads. Respect!

I'm just coming to the end of a 36-hour v/low-cal fast - just 300 cals last night. Actually 40+, ATM, but I'm not in the slightest bit hungry so I'm just wondering whether to wait for lunch to break my fast.

I'm hesitating because I know, the moment I have a nibble, the hunger switch will be thrown and I'll be elbow deep in the biscuit barrel before you can say Michael Mosley! Shock
