The 5:2 Thread number 21! Soaking up the Sunshine

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads: most recent one before that another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the links and tips that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing, btw. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful. Sorry if I haven't given credit where it's due, but it was just enough of a job getting all the links re-copied and back into one post.

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Now I know in my head I haven't really put on 8lbs in 2 days so why the buggery do my scales say I have!!!!! I am getting to the sharp end of the 30 day squat challenge now and did 220 yesterday so I know I am retaing some water, but it can't be that much. Dh managed to dump a heavy box on my scales yesterday and left it there all day, so I'm kinda hoping he's broken them (I know that is wishful thinking though as the box wasn't heavier than me).

Squat challenge finishes on Friday so I am going to try and not weigh until the following Wednesday, which is my official WI day, so my muscles have a few days to recover and let go of some of the water.

I had wine and lots of carbs yesterday going over my TDEE but the rest of the week was good. So frustrating.

Definite FD for me today.

Glad it all went well saf.

aka really hope you're feeling better soon.

Goldenhandshake · 10/06/2013 12:53

Hi all, after my first week of 5:2 I have lost 1.8 lbs so am quite pleased as I was very sceptical and ate well the other 5 days. Tomorrow will be my 3rd fast day Smile

BreakOutTheKaraoke · 10/06/2013 13:29

That's interesting Eagle. Do you know, I've just realised I've never been told the actual reason for my B12 deficiency. Don't think it's pernicious anemia, as I've never had actual anemia, except when the diagnosis was very first made. Never heard of the sublinguals either, do they help?

My crashes do tend to creep on, I don't realise how bad I'm getting for a couple of weeks, until I'm literally exhausted come 2 o clock. The only other symptoms I get are the pins and needles and palpatations, I'm lucky that I don't get many of the more extreme symptoms. The exhaustion is more than bad enough though!

Dotty342kids · 10/06/2013 13:41

itsaboatjack you can't possibly have put on 8lbs in 2 days - don't panic! I'm definitely going with the "DH broke the scales" theory Grin

EagleRiderDirk · 10/06/2013 13:47

break I'm very similar - I've not been officially diagnosed because my old gp messed up so badly but the new gp thinks its highly likely given my family history etc. The problem is they'd have to keep me off the b12 for a while to run the proper tests and he's seen how bad I've crashed so say's we'll treat as PA. I'm unofficially an official sufferer!

The sublinguals usually get me to the 12 week mark without me crying on my gp's office floor begging for my hit Grin.
www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B001LR5ONY
these are the one's I use btw.

The exhaustion and the fuzziness is really enough for me. I tried shaving the other day and nothing was coming off. Still had the cap on the razor. I'd done an entire leg before I realised Confused

Please let me know if you find this helps you too, it'd be great if this can go down as another health benefit

EagleRiderDirk · 10/06/2013 13:48

itsa your DH definitely broke the scales Grin

BreakOutTheKaraoke · 10/06/2013 15:21

So you take those as you get nearer the end of your b12? Interesting, might be worth trying them.

My doctor said no to every 8 weeks, stick to 12, my nurse said yes. As she's the one who sees me come crawling in with no energy to stand up, I'll stick with her opinion! Might be worth speaking to your nurse if you feel you can benefit from them more frequently?

I had blood tests to diagnose me, this is something that runs in my family- 2 sisters and my mum have it too. Mum and younger sister both have coeliacs too, I'm clear at the minute but it can be related so half expecting to be diagnosed later in life.

BreakOutTheKaraoke · 10/06/2013 15:23

Oh, and dragged myself out and managed a run! Completed it this time, week 1 day 1 of C25K done, along with a load of leg and bum toning exercises! Feel a bit sick now though, and more than a little wobbly, dinnertime may be a little sooner than planned. Not really done exercise on a fast day before!

frenchfancy · 10/06/2013 15:27

Well done breakout I think wk1 run1 is the worst of the lot, it gets easier from now.

EagleRiderDirk · 10/06/2013 15:32

Yes - I start these for the second half of my cycle. This is my family curse too - one of my aunts was diagnosed but they put it down to her practically being vegan but then my gran finally went to a gp about her back and this showed up in her tests. We all got the instruction to get out levels checked at least and nearly all the adult women have recurrent B12 deficiencies and we have a few positive tests for PA by those who's gps were on the ball.

Unfortunately our nurses wont go above 12 weeks without gp permission, and none of our gps will go against the nice guidelines. It was hell when I was pregnant as I crashed 4 weeks after a jab, so add that to hormones and I really was a state in his office! Thankfully a midwife I'd seen had a family member with B12 problems and she suggested the sublinguals. They stopped me collapsing every time I climbed the stairs!

EagleRiderDirk · 10/06/2013 15:32

Well done on the run too break

Moominlandmidwinter · 10/06/2013 16:10

aka, hope that you feel better soon. Remember, it's just a blip.

saf, glad that the surgery went well.

Well done to the losers.

Self-indulgent pity-party post coming up...

Have had a face like this Sad since yesterday morning, as, stupidly I weighed myself, and I'd put on 2lb since Friday. I know that this could partly be due to one of the unpleasant side effects I'm suffering-constipation. Seriously- I've been bunged up for 6 days now! Shock Blush After my good result on Friday, plus the nice weather, I was spurred on to do well eating-wise, and took DD for a 5 mile walk in the pushchair. I came in under TDEE on both Friday and Saturday, so was so disappointed to see my weight yesterday. I then fell off the wagon a bit with snacking, and ate half of DD3's giant hotdog at the fair, then had a cornetto and a kit-kat. I also had some wine in the evening. Have found the fast tough-going today, whilst I haven't caved, I'm soooo hungry, and am counting down the hours til my dinner time.

I was so, so cold on Saturday. BIL and SIL had taken their caravan to a country park nearby for the weekend, so we went to join them for the afternoon. I was wearing knee-length shorts, t-shirt and cardigan, as it was sunny, but sitting around all afternoon, I got chilled. I ended up wearing SIL's body-warmer, long padded coat, and a blanket. I was still shivering. I'm not ill though, and it wasn't a fast day. Weird.

Have got some senna to take tonight, hope it does the trick!

spababe · 10/06/2013 16:25

feel strong today and have not had anything to eat yet - salad planned for tonight which I found on the tinned tomatoes blog - don't know if I am allowed to post the link but she has some nice ideas

Talkinpeace · 10/06/2013 16:34

spa
if you've found links to useful recipes, post away ....
some of us even post links to threads on other forums ...
because this one www.52fastdiet.co.uk/search.php?search_id=active_topics&sid=79cc81d6665249aa37294e09299528ff in particular is so useful!

peachypips · 10/06/2013 16:39

Hey all. I hope you don't mind but I need some encouragement. I came here for the first time last week. Only did one fast last week as my whole family were ill. Today is my first this week and I feel rubbish.
I feel depressed and like crying. It's because I usually medicate with food when I'm low and I can't today! Also am pre-m.
Will the fasting get easier? I'm struggling and worried I'm going to fold. Please spur me on!

BetsyBell · 10/06/2013 17:24

peachypips You're doing really well and it does get easier. Sorry to hear you're surrounded by illness but think how great you'll feel tomorrow when you realise you haven't eaten all that self-medicating junk.

Put the kettle on instead :)

You are so right. I will feel good tmrw!! The great thing about this woe is that it is breaking down my lifelong habit of depending on food for my happiness and stopping it from controlling my life. I'm not massively overweight at 11 stone but I def have a v bad relationship with food!
Am drinking coffee but am so hungry!!

Talkinpeace · 10/06/2013 17:33

The fasting gets much easier
but you need to give yourself time.
The thing with this WOE is that it does not stop when you "get to target" - its for life so you can tweak it to suit yourself over the coming months.

I stopped losing weight last year but am fasting today, looking forward to a big bowl of soup for my supper.

If in doubt, have a cup of tea or coffee.

Emilythornesbff · 10/06/2013 17:48

Ok, sorry for "ignoring" earlier posts but thread is moving too fast for my iPad.
moomin good luck with the senna. You will be so much lighter after that takes effect Grin

[peachypips] ime the fasting gets much easier. I actually look forward to some fasting days as I like the control Hmm
A nice cup of tea is required I think.

BetsyBell · 10/06/2013 18:06

While the food manufacturers are mourning their losses thanks to mass conversion to 5:2 the beverage industries will be soaring! [puts kettle on again]

Fast over for today, all my calories consumed by red Thai curry and rice. I did have chocolate though. Lots of drinks tonight.

Is it me or does chocolate taste absolutely divine when you have been fasting all day?

spababe · 10/06/2013 19:06

ok link is here - all veggie recipes. I had the 'fridge salad' tonight and added a small chopped apple. It took me ages to eat which I think is good.
